The bright beans clasp hands with the slices of sun that peek through the Bridger Bowlscape. A truck pulling a trailer arrives, the basket and balloon are unloaded, stretching across the landscape before you. The flight is on. As the balloon slowly fills, the crew become ants in a choreographed ballet of ropes, lofting balloon and uprighting basket. The pilot is the first in the basket, the participants loaded thereafter, one by one. Small talk and jocularity distract you from the fact the crew members have now become ants again, in size, as lift-off has been so seamless, so smooth, you never even realized you left the ground. Roofs come into view as the landscape reverts to a moving typography of breathtaking awe. The sun slices lift from the mountains sillouhette, the flag attached to the balloon flies straight and unwavering, perfectly framed against the mountains and sun. You realize you are part of the wind current itself, suspended in peace and tranquility. Another dimension, another world, where time almost does not exist. All too soon tree tops are passing, eagles flying out from them as you lower past to a landing gentler than the elevator in your hotel! Man, what a way to spend a few hours on a Sunday morning! Just to let you know.... He was going to propose while we were in the air, but our flight got canceled due to weather, and he could not wait the one week until we actually had our flight, oh, how romantic it would have been, it was just beautiful and serene up there. .....BUT it was even more romantic and sincere that he could not wait but a few hours before he had to ask!

And the puzzle's were a combination of riddles, mechanical things that work when put together, and cracking unique combination locks. We escaped one that had a 57% success rate and almost escaped the hardest one with a 18% success rate. We went once for a birthday party with friends and the second time for our wedding anniversary. I would highly recommend it for any event especially for a date night. You really get to know a person when your trapped for a hour in a locked room.

At the summit the views are of the valley back into Livingston. Very well marked trail as well as a nice parking lot. The creek that runs at the start of the trail is beautiful and dogs are allowed off leash here so I may need to see about trying that out next time as well. This trail is very close to town so easy to get to if you're in need of a quick hike. There is a decent elevation gain as well so I really got a good workout in!!

Aside from the historical aspect of this site in the Lewis and Clark expedition, there are other reasons to stop and visit: campsites, foot-trails, and rafting, and picnicking. Plus, during the summer there are speakers available from the park service and the nearby University of Montana. Headwaters is a busy park, there's always something going on, but if you have the time, it's a beautiful park to explore, see wildlife, birdwatch, hike and maybe even kayak or raft down the rivers.

Demands it, in fact…read more Near cliffs carved by the Madison River, this site was used by early Native Americans who used to drive the buffalo off the cliff. Waiting at the base of the cliff were the women and children ready to skin, clean, and prepare the buffalo meat and begin preparing the hides for clothing and blankets. It's difficult to imagine in today's era. It looks like any other tall hill and cliff until you read about its history. The park has a nice walking path amongst the remains of what has been identified as a Native American village and there are plenty of bones and other artifacts buried beneath the grasses. You aren't allowed to remove what you find, though. The unnerving part of the hike that follows the path of the runners and the buffalo herds is not the history, but the snakes. There are huge signs advising to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes. So much for the imagination needed to see, in your mind's eye, the thundering herds of buffalo when you have to keep one eye grounded in the reality of the here and now. It's a primitive park, not well traveled, but that makes it easier to picture the past. Just be mindful of the snakes. There's a minimal entry fee of a few dollars paid on the honor system.
