I stayed here during my wedding weekend with my bridal party, though the guest ranch is often used by hunters and vacationers looking for the Montana experience, it also worked so well for our purposes! The rooms were clean and inviting and had multiple living spaces which was great for a large group! The dining area let in beautiful morning light and was spacious (pictured below) making it easy for us all to dine together. During our two hour ride with Jody and Keith, our running joke was to say things like, "Views too majestic: one star," or "Guide likes to make jokes: one star." This was a really fantastic experience that I think may become a tradition with my family. Jody, Keith, and all the horses (even Spike, who was kind of a pill) were a real pleasure to interact with during our visit. The ride itself was a delight. Sure, I was sore afterward, but that's to be expected. Consider going to any of Montana's hot springs to recover afterward. If you're visiting in the summer, I do suggest scheduling a ride in the morning, as it's never too hot at 9AM. read more

My friends and I (group of 7) were looking for a place to go horseback riding in Montana and stumbled upon Iron Wheel Guest Ranch, and we're extremely glad we did! Scott and Jody led us on a 2 hour horseback ride. Very reasonable prices ($70 for 2 hrs) and a guided tour through breathtaking Montana scenery. If you are pushing 30 like a certain "friend" of this yelper - your butt and knees may not be able to handle more than a 2 hour trail ride (they also offer 4 hour and all day rides). But this place is awesome. First of all they let you pay after your ride. I guess they know your sore ass isn't running far or fast after two hours on Commanche. The guide was nice, and informative, but not so talkative as to detract from the beautiful scenery. The horses were in good shape, and they seem to take care in retiring their horses once they aren't fit for trail rides anymore, unlike some other places (ahem, place in San Francisco, whose name I can't remember). The only part of the lodge that I saw was what was on the way to the bathroom, but it looked cozy and cute. There were rabbits hopping around the lawn, a barn cat wandering about, and taxidermy shop next door. Now really, what more do you want? read more

Fantastic horseback ride. Took the family out for a two hour ride and it was the best part of our trip out to Montana. The owners could not have been more helpful. They had my 7 and 8 year old (it was their first time) set up perfectly and made them super comfortable. Our guide Brock was an extremely friendly and knowledgable young man who entertained my kids and made sure we all had a good time. The horses could not have had better temperaments; they were suited perfectly for beginner and advanced riders. Next time in butte we will be back. read more

The Iron Wheel Guest Ranch is a perfect place to stay & trail ride. John & Sherry were warm & welcoming. We enjoyed ice tea and good conversation with them on the porch. John took us to meet the horses. He had been telling us why he preferred riding mules to horses, having grown up riding horses I was not entirely convinced. Their horses are all gentle & well mannered, as we stood petting them, Gus, the red mule started head butting me wanting my attention, omen? We picnicked on the porch, a very restful sleep in a lovely room, & enjoyed Sherry's delicious scrambled eggs for breakfast. I walked down to the corral for my 4 hour ride and there was Gus saddled & waiting, omen 2? Scott & Christy led us on a magnificent ride, beautiful scenery, deer, & a stop for lunch by a beautiful stream where we enjoyed a delicious lunch before our return trip. Amazing! I could write pages about the experience provided to us by the entire Cargill Family. My buddy and I recently went on the fishing trip,...What A Blast! Our guide, Scott, what an awesome guy! From the beginning he was straight with us and asked us what was more important to our trip... alot of fish or big fish. We went with big fish... and was it worth it! We caught over 50 fish in two days! Multiple 15 to 19 inch fish which put up a fight that makes your whole trip. He kept us well fed, hydrated and most important entertained. He consistently had us on fish and coached us what areas to hit with the lures. Outside of fishing the bed and breakfast was amazing! Clean rooms and bathrooms which makes all the difference. You will be very well fed! The common room is comfortable with tv, cards, games , etc. Let me stress this, Sherry will take very good care of you! John Cargill! What can I say about John. My buddy and I had a great time trading and listing to stories about past hunting and fishing trips. A true advocate of the wildlife and hunting experience. This guy is the real deal and knows his stuff!!! I've been dreaming of a guided bull elk hunt and Iron Wheel Guest Ranch is where I will be taking my money. We took a 2 hour trail ride and it was one of the most incredible experiences of our lives so far. the views were outstanding and our cowboy guide was very informative - fun to hear about his life breaking horses and bull riding. everyone was super helpful, kind and friendly. My dad and I love the outdoors and when on vacation, we often go fishing, hiking, horseback riding, etc. We have been on several guided horseback rides, but this was BY FAR the best. We did the 4 hour ride with lunch and it was everything we could've hoped for. The lunch was great, the views were stunning, and Scott, our guide, was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Just got back from a fly fishing trip with my Dad at Iron Wheel! First time fishing in Montana and couldn't had a better time! Beautiful ranch, in the picturesque Montana mountains and horses roaming around the pastures. Hard-working family run operation with excellent customer service! Sherry and John were so hospitable and welcomed us into their home, and made it feel like our own! Home cooked meals, adjusted to our schedule, and even able to work with some dietary restrictions (dairy and gluten free). Now, as for the fishing! First time float fishing and what a great experience it was. We went for two days with Scott and couldn't be happier! Flexible to our wants/needs/schedule and found us the fish! My first time catching four species of freshwater fish in a day (brook trout, rainbow, grayling, and white fish). Easy-going guy who knows the river, and how to catch the fish. I'm more of a beginner fly-fisher so he even was able to give tips and help as needed. The views were priceless on the Big Hole and already trying to plan a trip back to the area! My husband and I took our two grand kids for a 4 hour trail ride on 8/9/2017. We had an absolute blast! The kids had never ridden on their own before and were so excited - particularly our 9 year old grand daughter. She fell in love with her mount, Handsome, immediately. Our 14 year old grandson gets to go home and tell his friends that he went to Montana and rode a Mustang. All of the horses were so well-behaved; the staff was relaxed, helpful and fun to be with. Our creek-side lunch was perfect. Gorgeous scenery and just a fantastic day all around. The kids definitely want to go again on their next visit, and we will very happily oblige.
