I love this place and I think it's great to have it around. I enjoy coming to see new, cool exhibits here. Unfortunately, last Sunday (they opened a new show a night before), I walked over to check the new exhibit out. I found a note on the door "back in 10". Well, they were not back in 10, we waited for at least 15 - 20 minutes outside and no one showed up. They have the place opened just for 4 hours on Sundays. Shouldn't you stay in there during these 4 hours? At least I walked, so the inconvenience wasn't huge, but what if I've have driven there? Considering that parking is difficult on Lankershim. This isn't the 1st time it's happening, I want to support this place and love what they do, but please stay open during your business hours! read more

Don't fret my fellow-Yelpers, I was just getting to that! 800 Gallery is one of the many art galleries located in the NoHo Arts District. What makes this gallery stand out amongst its peers? Instead of just being an art gallery which features art shows and exhibits by artists based on a theme or contest; Gallery 800 has a catch: all of the artist exhibitors are members of the Art Directors Guild IATSE 800 (get it? Gallery 800? The union number of 800?). It is a wonderful way for members of the film and TV industry whom work behind the cameras to showcase their artistic flair and aptitude. Gallery 800 not only hosts exhibitions and receptions; but it works in conjunction with the Local 800 to convert Tuesday nights into an artistic and stress relief by offering drawing workshops at the nearby Local 800 building on Ventura Blvd in Studio City. For $10/night, entertainment industry professionals (or not. You DON'T have to be the member of any union. You can be Joe Schmo off the street); can spend a couple hours fine-tuning their drawing/illustrating skills while also sharing and networking with others. As for the receptions at 800 Gallery, they don't have the usual stuck-up and pretentious quality to them. I attend many art events and this was one of the first times that it felt like everyone was actually flowing with creativity versus just a supposed supporter of art AKA rich snob. Gallery 800 is retaining art at its best. Plus, with yummy refreshments (chips & salsa, veggie platters, cookies, donation-only wine/beer/soda bar), your tummy will be pleased too. If you see the gallery curator Denis Olsen, feel free to ask him questions. He is very knowledgeable. Whether you are in the entertainment industry or not, Gallery 800 stands out amongst the art gallery crowd. Extremely friendly environment and the exhibits are welcoming, with music and food... it's almost like a gathering of good friends appreciating art. We came to see a friend's exhibit. The theme was clowns and she had some really good work. I also enjoyed seeing the other artists. I'll be honest I've been a "frustrated" art person. I'm worse than a 5 year old, and that would be insulting to a 5 year old, I can't even draw a straight line. But i've been doodling with art programs on my iPad just to relax. However these people they have a great gift and to see them in person and to see the art, this was the first time I've ever been to an event like this and it was fun, better than an evening at a bar, and the people aren't stuck up snobs. We had to go after a few hours but I honestly could have spent the whole evening there. They had a jazz band playing that was very good too. The whole evening was perfect and if you're an artist, you should get in with Gallery, they do a great job of promoting, and meet other artists as well! read more

My new favorite Art Gallery! I love to bring a girlfriend and my takeout lunch and enjoy all the eclectic professional artwork. Featuring artists from the movie industry. Not necessarily movie art, but yes sometimes it is shown. But fine art done by artists that are professionals like the great masters that make art every day of their lives. I also love love love my new friend Abra the curator of this wonderful gallery. I love spending time with her talking about art, artist showing each other pictures on our iPads. She is wonderfully educated and so full of energy, it's really a gift to spend time with her. With all this said I'd like to quote a couple paragraphs from a Herbert Ryman essay. He explains the kind of artist the movie industry artists are and have been. Herbert Ryman: " Motion picture artist have traditionally been studied separately from what some people care to determine "fine arts artists" but in the early years of film, the separation which may be Felt today was not so marked." He goes on to say "Many artists bounced back-and-forth between motion picture studio work and private careers. Carl Oscar Borg made a name of himself in the art community as a painter of western scenes and in in the motion picture industry as an art director for such films as the Black Pirate (united artist, 1926) in the 1930s such watercolorist as Phil Dyke born 1906, Lee Blair born 1911, George Gibson born 1904, and Emil Kosa Jr. consider themselves fortunate to have steady well-paying employment with the studios that enable them to pursue private careers unaffected by financial pressure. Gallery 800 is a wonderful jewel of a gallery in North Hollywood featuring fine arts created by union Guild members. I had the pleasure of visiting Gallery 800 twice this spring for the Little Bonfires (In Boundaried Spaces) exhibition and I was treated to a feast for the eyes with this well-curated show of mixed media works. In a time when funding and support for fine arts is decreasing, it is especially important to patronize galleries such as Gallery 800 that support local artisan Guild members and feature their work prominently in a bright, light and open setting with warm and welcoming Gallery staff. The Gallery really blew me away. The unique pieces are incredible. This is a must see. There is a huge variety of pieces including work from various mediums, including watercolors, oils, acrylics, textiles, mixed media and photography. During the day, these artists are leading design professionals in the entertainment industry. Mike Denering, who is a featured scenic artist, is currently working on a 600 foot backdrop for Universal's NYC backlot which was damaged in the fires of 2009. The work is for sale and there are great smaller gifts such as post cards, calendars and t-shirts. read more

I have greatly enjoyed Gallery 800's exhibits, particularly their salute to longtime Universal painter Jaroslav Gebr. Their shows often highlight the works of unsung cinematic artists whose work is all-too-frequently overlooked. Their staff-- especially the curator, Abra-- is unfailingly pleasant and helpful. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the gallery itself is spacious, yet intimate. I recommend their openings or just casually dropping by. read more
