The owner is friendly and inviting, kindly explained where the art is from and the artists who've made them. Mostly local Terlingua artists and some Mexican artwork. Some of the jewelry is the owners own work! There's paintings, photographs, drawings, handmade mugs, shot glasses, plates, jewelry etc. I got a beautiful tumbled stone necklace (made by the owner) and two shot glasses made in Mexico. There was a mistake when checking out and he quickly explained what happened, apologized and refunded me my money and even gave me another necklace for the inconvenience. He was very kind and apologetic about the mistake. I will definitely be coming back here next time I'm in town.

Terlingua is absolutely one of my favorite desert destinations. I mean who doesn't love an old…read moreghost town? An old mining town with buildings dating back to its inception. You'll see ruins, graves, and more. With that said, this ghost town has operating shops, bars, and restaurants. It's still off-the-beaten-path even with tourists (meaning you'll never be bombarded with tourists). In other words, the folks that are there is because it's intentional. BTW, the town's population is less than 180 people.

And it was everything I hoped it would be. By day, it has a vacant, ghostly feel, but centered around beauty built from long ago. Terlingua was once an old mining town at the turn of the century. That is until the 1940s when the mines dried up and most of the people left this small but quaint town. Now, it's a place people visit for the history, and the yearly BBQ event that brought the town to back to life. It's a quick visit, this little ghost town, but it's worth your time to stop and take in the history and quaint beauty it still holds to this day.

There is a small museum speaking to the history of the mining community, but when you walk in the entire store could be history of Terlingua and the surrounding area. This trade store has gifts for everyone. If you're looking to dress up your Xmas tree they have that. Looking for a hat (sombrero, trucker, cowboy), they got it. If you're looking for wine or hot sauce, they have it. They have a small book store. so the selection is huge and varied. I truly believe you can find any kind of gift in here for all your folks. When we went there it was later, after dinner at the Starlight Theater next door - so, there wasn't a lot of help at this store. I wouldn't say that the prices are entirely bargain, but they are not surprising. Liz picked up some cute earrings and some stickers. Texted Ceil Sunday night and she got back with us Monday morning. She works in both Alpine and Terlingua but she was going to be in her Terlingua office on the day we wanted to schedule. Fine with us because we were going to make that drive while we were in the area anyway. Beautiful drive, definitely a superior massage. We'll be coming back this way again I'm sure, and we'll make sure we include a visit Ceil when we come back. Side note: she even offered to dog sit our chihuahua if we wanted to do some hiking while we were in Terlingua.

We showed up early for our ride with Terlingua Stables, while we had some time to burn, we dropped by to grab some coffee. It looked like it opened slightly earlier the day prior, and the day we got there it was as if they were still getting ready at 8:20am. I was glad to have this place open during the Terlingua "slow" season. They had three types of drip available, and I tried one of their muffins. I think for the most part the other patrons in the shop/cafe. The menu has sandwiches, toasts, breakfast snacks. So, if you had time, at breakfast or lunch, food is an option. The staff were nice. The cafe and shop were clean. The shop had a variety of things for sale - cool gear, cool snacks, cool coffee, cool art. They have art for sale, and big art, small art... shirts with art on them. Liz picked up a light long sleeve shirt to cover her arms during our times outside. There's a cool painting of John Wayne outside the bathroom for about $1,200. There is a bigger but similar style mural of Willie Neslon in the main shop area. It looks real cool. They have African statues and masks from all over. In the cafe portion, you can find plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Liz enjoyed her coffee in the unusually cool and breezy July morning outside. Solid 3.5 and great place for coffee and art.

I love living relatively closer to Marfa, Texas. Previously, Marfa was a flight away; now, it's a…read moredrive away. The peak of Maria's hipster frothiness seems to have passed. It appears to have settled into a more predictable groove. Of course, the reason for this town's fame is Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation. I do my infrequent pilgrimage to Chinati for one reason: to see his '100 untitled works in mill aluminum.' I like choosing the open viewing versus the guided tour option because it gives me time to walk among the aluminum blocks undisturbed in relative silence with no time limit. The sun's angle hit different pieces producing different angles of contrast and shimmer. Being in these two buildings is like standing in a mash up of a cathedral and an after-hours machine shop. So many get frustrated with Donald Judd's work. They place demands on what it all means and they walk out dismissively when enlightenment doesn't happen. I toss out my brain and my thoughts. I don't come here to figure anything out. I walk the aisles and just breathe it all in. It's soothing and gratifying; part of the spiritual reset that Chinati and Marfa can do. P.S. Chinati still doesn't allow photography inside their buildings or galleries. I visited once when a rare exception was made. Almost every other art institution in North America allows non-flash photography. It's time for Chinati to allow for the same.

She liked a couple of items when we visited ultimately sending me back over from Alpine the next day to buy what she wanted. A natural cut amethyst (HUGE) set in a black and white ceramic base. She wore it to dinner that very evening at the Century Bar and Grill grinning from ear to ear. Staff was friendly on both visits; will return next visit to find another bauble to keep the wife happy.

We did a early morning ride with Evo (gotta consider heat and horses) and his knowledge of plant life, history, suggestions for a scenic drive to Marfa, etc. made our excursion completely delightful. Evo also took a few moments to snap LOTS of pics of us (worthy of a picture frame). Evo was polite and respectful of our time and made the trip a nice way to end our vacation. The icing on the cake was Miss Dottie, the cattle dog who was a great addition for our ride.
