Highly recommended for anyone wanting a genuine Dark Sky stargazing experience! Our family of 4 visited Big Bend National Park as part of a cross-country trip and wanted to experience stargazing for the first time. We found Astro Mucho through a google search and called for more details. Immediately it was easy to sense Devo's enthusiasm and friendliness even over the phone, and we booked a tour. He was very communicative prior to the event, checking in about weather conditions and special considerations for our handicapped son to ensure he would be comfortable and be able to participate fully. We arrived to the site (only 10 minutes north of Terlingua) where we found an intimate set up with comfortable chairs and groovy mood music that set the tone for our celestial experience. We lucked out and were the only 4 guests that evening (think it usually may be up to 10 guests per event). We found the laser pointer helpful during the guided tour of the sky. Everyone got a pair of binoculars to use and a red light flashlight as a gift. Good mix of telescope time, real time astrophotography (on a tablet), background astrology info, and guided tour of the sky/ constellations. Devo was patient with our questions and was knowledgeable. I want to start by saying that every person we interacted with here was incredibly friendly and helpful. Bill handled our reservations and made everything work for us despite their packed schedule. We originally missed our morning tour due to our phones not updating for daylight savings time. (Quick note: Because this area is so close to Mexico, which doesn't observe daylight savings, your phone may not switch over correctly--so double-check! I also think it would be helpful if the reservation team asked guests what time their phone shows, since they're likely aware of this issue.) That said, when we arrived late, the woman at the desk (I wish I remembered her name) was so kind. Instead of just saying "too bad," she worked with us to reschedule for another day that fit our plans. We really appreciated that level of service. Canoe Half-Day Excursion: We did this during spring break, and unfortunately, this was the one disappointing part of our experience. We knew the water levels were low, but we didn't fully understand how that would impact the tour. Of course, water levels are beyond the company's control, but in this case, the excursion just wasn't worth it. First, we had to drive an hour to the drop-in location. After paddling downriver for a bit and stopping for water, we had to paddle back upriver--which took us by surprise. Normally, river trips involve being dropped off at one point and picked up at another. I assume the low water levels made that impossible. The scenery was also underwhelming--just dead grass along the riverbanks, with no views. Again, not Far Flung's fault, but I wish we had been given a clearer picture of what to expect. Had we known, we would have skipped it and used that time for something else. The guides were great--it definitely wasn't their fault. If you're considering this tour, I'd recommend only booking it when water levels are higher, which would likely allow for better routes and scenery. 360 Jeep Tour Excursion: This tour, on the other hand, was absolutely worth it. Even my 10- and 11-year-olds enjoyed it! Our driver, Richard, was fantastic--knowledgeable, engaging, and fun. He called the experience "edutainment," and that's exactly what it was. The tour covered the area's geography, flora, and fauna in a way that was both educational and entertaining. The next day, we actually ran into Richard while visiting Santa Elena Canyon. Had I known that was a tour option, I might have picked that instead--but either way, our tour was a great experience. Ours was a private tour, which I'd recommend over a group setting if possible. Overall Thoughts Far Flung is a great company with excellent service. Just be mindful of weather conditions when planning your visit--this area is currently in a three-year drought, which significantly impacts water-based activities. We didn't realize that beforehand, and it made a difference in our experience. If you're visiting, I highly recommend checking water levels before booking any river excursions. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with their land-based tours! read more

The service from Bill at the front desk was so kind and personable, we so appreciate him! ...not to mention the comfortable beds, and the cabin was awesome! We enjoyed soaking in the hot tub nightly while we watched the sunset. the highlight of our trip was the River Canoe ride with Liz and Molly. They were friendly, knowledgeable, fun and great guides as we canoed for two hours they taught us about Big Bend, geology and conservation. They were great with my son as well. We wanted to be driven around to see things in our tour so we could come back and explore more. So, we took a 4 hour Jeep tour. My wife and I have taken tours like this here in the US and other countries. This is one of the best we've had. We went with another couple and were all in the back of the Jeep. What didn't work: We're had a windy day and being in the open air jeep was chilly! What did work: Booking seemed easy. Our friend booked it so I'm guessing it was pretty straight forward Nice, friendly people in the office Great little coffee shop Easy parking. We have a dually, so need space to park! What a great time! Our tour guide Cole shared so much on the drive to port it. History, geography, geology, dining, ecology, you name it. And the canoeing was spectacular. We had rain two nights in a row and the river was perfect. Strongly recommend. I called a couple tour companies but Far Flung was the only one doing half day trips. We booked this casita last minute for our family of four, and it turned out to be such a wholesome and peaceful experience. The place is secluded and quiet and exactly what we needed to unwind. If you're looking to stay just outside of Big Bend National Park - look no further than Far Flung. Seriously. These little cabins are awesome! They have a spacious bedroom with two queen beds, spacious kitchenette with seating and the bathroom is big too. However, I do think that they could have used the space more wisely and made the showers bigger because there was plenty of room to do that with the size of the bathroom. The beds were super comfortable and I meant to ask them what brand of sheets they used. SO SOFT!!! The service there was excellent. The gentleman working the customer service desk was so nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. He always smiled and his service was genuine! You could tell that he was a good guy and he genuinely wanted you to be happy and he loves what he does. Is it expensive? Yes. But is it worth the money? YES! read more

What a great adventure with John,our guide. We were recommended to canoe with this company and we are so happy we did. John was so fun, informative and made the best of our day. It was a bit windy going through parts of the canyon but we made it and highly recommended the 5 mile adventure. We stopped and had a picnic, sat in the hot spring, and went for a very easy hike. The day started at 8am with a drive to Big Bend National Park and we stopped at the village for souvenirs and coffee. Then on to the river we went. My wife and I did the Around the Bend tour and it was great. We had driven part of the route the day before on our own, but having Jennifer, our guide explaining flora and fauna as we went along was much more educational. She managed to answer almost all our questions, as well. Jennifer would stop the Jeep whenever someone wanted to take a photo, and was very good at stopping and backing up to let people chase their hats that blew away. (Wear your chinstraps, people!) Near the end of the tour, we spotted a bear and she was as excited as we were. Lunch was included and tasty - sandwiches and chips with homemade salsa. Bring water containers! There is water on the Jeep but it's really to refill your containers. I thought it seemed pricey when we signed up, but it was worth it in the end. It is a long tour, and there is a lot of driving, but there are frequent stops to stretch your legs. (If you see a bathroom, use it. However, the one at Castelon is air-conditioned. Might want to hold out for that one.) Part of the trip is over four-wheel drive only roads and part is on the park roads. It's not really off-roading but it gave us a perspective on the park we could not get in our own vehicle. Highly recommended. read more

Last week we went on our third overnight river trip with Far Flung - a 3-day, 2-night Rio Grande canoe trip on through Temple Canyon. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Making the reservation was easy - the front desk folks were clear and helpful, and we could book by phone. All the trip logistics information was emailed to us soon after, and everything was well explained. The trip itself was fantastic - the canyon was beautiful, we lucked out with the most amazing weather (warm days and cool nights), the gourmet meals were delicious, and the guides - Nick and Ziggy - were exceptional - kind, safety-oriented, funny, and just all-around enjoyable trip leaders. The Temple Canyon section is especially nice because the water levels are more constant due to spring fed waters, plus the water quality was much better than we expected as well. Our family is already talking about trying to find time for another Rio Grande trip with Far Flung later this year if possible. read more

I really want to praise the office staff as well: we had two different snafus that affected our ability to participate as originally booked, and they bent over backwards to accommodate us and make sure we were still able to do the float. Clean, well appointed casitas with the nicest staff. Pool was refreshing and lots of outdoor games were provided. Beautiful plantings with signs educated one on the native plants. We took the last kayak float of the summer season. Morgan and Casi literally did the heavy lifting with setting us in and out of the Rio Grande. Wish we had more time at our stop. Was difficult to use the restrooms, examine the spa ruins, check the petroglyphs and try the hot springs in 25 minutes. The mud at the end of the trip was a killer. Provided an unwanted mud treatment. The 6 hour Jeep trip with Jennifer was informative and fun! She gave excellent lessons on the history, zoology and botany of the park. She gave us a delicious lunch that included homemade salsa. Was a great adventure. read more
