Gallo Pinto is becoming one of my favorite local restaurants as the carne asada has a great flavor. Having eaten comida Nica in Miami and other places, this carne asada is as flavorful as most that I've eaten . Being able to eat some gallo pinto, which is hard to find, adds to the authenticity and deliciousness of the meal . Lastly the queso frito is well fried and has great flavor . If you love or are passing through Liberal you will not go wrong eating at this restaurant! They have other Nicaraguan plates as well as Mexican. read more

Stopped into this little gem to grab a late lunch. Everything tasted great! I had the Pollo Asado and it was packed with flavor.

Y'all. The camarones a la diabla (spicy) is like a religious experience. That red sauce is to die for. The rice is amazing too. Even the chips and salsa were delicious! My friend had the chicken enchiladas with green Chile sauce and it was the perfect level of low heat for her. And also delicious! Just stop here. I look forward to coming back! read more

WOW!! We stopped in for breakfast the burritos are great I got 1 ham and 1 chorizo both were great. The wife got some sort soup (I know she's weird). She is loving the soup though. We were aware that there is a substantial immigrant community in Liberal, so we were cautiously optimistic that we could find something other than the same old American chains here. We were pleasantly surprised to find several types of Mexican food from Sinaloa, the DF, and Jalisco here, but THRILLED to find authentic Central American food! We decided to try Gallo Pinto, a Nicaraguan restaurant, since we have never had Nicaraguan food before. Boy! Are we glad we did! Gallo Pinto has earned every accolade we read on Yelp - the restaurant is in a humble 1950s former cafe building that probably served the motel next door. It's simple and humble outside, but the food and service inside is excellent. It's also busy at 11am - late breakfasters meet early lunchers! :) It was clear when we sat down in the immaculate dining room and were served chips and a homemade fiery green salsa that EVERYTHING here is made by hand and made to order. We had hoped to try the Nicaraguan tamales, but those take an hour to prepare :(. If you want to try them, the waitresses recommend you call ahead so they can get them started. Our waitress recommended we try the queso and plaintains for the lighter appetited. They were a brilliant choice! Super thin shaved plantains fried up crispy and served with grilled salty cheese made a delicious and exotic bite that was just enough for an early lunch. I had skipped breakfast so I was much hungrier. For me, she recommended the Nicaraguan enchiladas, and I am so glad I agreed! The menu description does not do it justice - Nicaraguan enchiladas are DELICIOUS and UNIQUE. They are not your typical tortillas rolled around fillings and topped with sauce. They look more like empanadas, but with a pillowy-soft corn breading that's fried to crispy perfection, enfolding a perfectly seasoned delicious meat-vegetable-onion-and rice filling. The enchiladas come three to an order, with a side of Gallo Pinto (mixed white rice and whole beans) and a tangy cabbage slaw. Food was bland, dry and cool. Service was mediocre and slow. Place was somewhat clean, but could use some deep cleaning.

As to the Nicaraguan & Mexican "sabor" let us say that the population of Liberal, KS LOVES it! As a Left Coast Woman looking for sabor - pero menos sal y con poquito grasa the really kind & friendly counter folk helped figure out a delicious dinner last evening: chicken soft taco y ensalada con tomate y aguacate! OMG! For breakfast a side of papas con poquito queso y salsa verde, y guavue de nectar - the perfect taste & amount for hitting the road in temps in the 90's! I'll definitely be back on my return trip! PS: in the morning the west side of bldg is in the shade, in case you have dogs. read more

BE WARNED: LONG WAIT. They've only got like 2 people working, so that's expected. We ate at like 12:30 or so for reference. Food wasn't really to our liking, and maybe that's just us but that was the case nonetheless. Red sauce was out of a can, really chemically tasting. Beans were flavored a little off, not bad just off tasting. The Carne plate was extremely sweet tasting. The green sauce on the Chile's plate wasn't bad, had some heat to it. Salsa was really cilantro tasting, not terrible but no heat. No real heat for any of the meals. read more

So most of area just minutes ago went dark...no electricity! Traffic lights also. Away from the main downtown area, all seems normal. This was first available and looks good. Mex breakfast being prepared now. And all is good. read more

If you are ever in Liberal, KS at breakfast time you have to try this place! The Eggs Ranchero are fabulous! I mean really, really good. I could eat these every morning! The service was friendly and fast. Has to be the best Mexican breakfast I've ever had... Yum! read more

Are you kidding me with these reviews? Not only was both me and my companion's orders wrong, they were absolutely terrible and way overpriced. I ordered a breakfast burrito and ended up with, well, I don't know what the heck it was but it cost $10. My friend got the wrong item completely. We would have complained but our waitress seems to have some difficulties and we didn't actually see her again, even when we paid. You get a frozen reheated hash brown think like McDonalds only not as good. The coffee was so bad we drank a couple sips. Never saw our waitress again anyway so it wouldn't have mattered if we wanted more. Will never go back to this place. Like I said I have no idea why these glowing reviews are here....makes one wonder. read more

SUPER great! Highly recommend. Four of us had a great lunch. Chimichanga, tacos, quesadillas were all enjoyed, but I recommend ordering from the Nicaraguan menu. SO GOOD. And the owners are great people. Will be back next time we are in Liberal! read more

If you are in Liberal and haven't had the food here you have seriously done a disservice to yourself! I can't express how amazing a find like this place was. If I could take any restaurant with me back home this would be my pick 100%! The food is amazing! I haven't had better Caribbean food anywhere except in the Caribbean and even in that region of the world it is hit or miss... this place would contend with the best I've ever had! Honestly I am a very critical foodie and it's rare that I give a five star, but Gallo Pinto has earned it! I brought a few guys I work with here and they were as surprised as I was with how delicious the food was! Solid restaurant!! My wife and I had their enchiladas and they were really good. I think they even gave us an extra one. We got two green ones and one red one. They were both really good. I loved the green one a lott! The salsa verde was perfect and was one of the best ones I've ever had! The slaw/lettuce on the side was so good because it was not just plain veggies but also had some nice lemon sauce. The service was great and I loved how they let us sample their different selection of drinks: mango, chia, and one more. We ended up getting their chia one and it was super tasty. We loved the place and it was really cosy! My wife and I are from California and Arizona and we thought this Mexican food was great! Will definitely come back! Thank you again for the food. A group of us went for lunch. Super friendly and very accommodating. Good selection of items but not overwhelming. Staff very patient in explaining each item. Chips and salsa. Chips were freshly made flour chips with a green salsa that had some heat but not overpowering. Fajitas, enchiladas ( Mexican and Honduran on the menu) and I had a dish of a vinegary slaw, pork rinds called yuca. and a potato like chunks that aren't potatoes but do not recall the exact name. Just happened to notice this Nicaraguan restaurant today. Stopped in for an enchilada and pinto (black beans and rice). It was different, but good, so, I took my husband out for supper. We both had Nicaraguan Carne Asada, I had the plantains, husband had tortillas. Everything was tasty, even the Cacao ( a drink like cold hot chocolate-if that makes sense.) Chips and salsa, again different, but good. We finished off with a luscious piece of flan! Can't wait to take a friend to this clean and cheerful little spot. read more
