Look, don't judge me! Just because I'm a grown adult and I can't walk past a game shop in a strange town without going inside and wanting to drop three figures, doesn't mean that I'm not...I forget where I was going with this story. Anyway, my point is, I just happened to be in the neighborhood when I dropped in, and I'm glad I did. Gamescape is a huge, well-appointed space with tons of everything for all games enthusiasts, from tabletop RPGs to CCGs to miniatures to board games (foreign and domestic) to classic stuff like chess and cribbage. The staff is almost too enthusiastic, and while the prices aren't low, it's worth it for the huge selection, and they occasionally have some good discounted stuff as well. read more

Went here for a magic the gathering prerelease. It was conducted well and the quality of play was very high. The store is comfortable and there are a lot of cool posters. My only concern is that if I come here too much, I will get into miniatures... they have a lot of really cool miniatures but that's just too nerdy. But they're really cool.... tempted! read more

After shopping at Gamescape for almost 10 years, I can say with authority that we are blessed to have them as our local gaming store. It is hard to find a store that is so well balanced across the full gaming spectrum of roleplaying, boardgames, miniature wargames, card games, darts, puzzles, miniature painting, and more! Gamescape was one of the first places I was told to check out when I moved to Marin, and it did not disappoint. With everything from Puzzles to Miniatures to Board Games to Tabletop RPGs this place has the absolute widest selection of games I have seen offline. We like non-traditional board games as a family, and I buy tons of RPG books there as well. All the guys who work there are great and really knowledgeable. They are clearly just as into the games they sell as anyone who walks in to shop. The prices seem like they are more than what you would find online, but once you count in shipping (board games are HEAVY) it actually comes out to be the same, so we shop here frequently. They have a great loyalty program that gets you rewards fast. Gamescape is by far one of our favorite places to go. (As for parking, there is actually a San Rafael public parking garage behind where Gamescape is located. It's very easy to find and inexpensive, I never spend more than a dollar or so.) read more

I've been going to Gamescape for years and now that I have a brace of 5-year old boys, they go there too. It's been a fantastic place for us. Not only are the store staff personable and welcoming, the store clientele is too. My boys will watch games in progres and ask questions and everyone is very nice to them. The playing area is located in the rear of the store and is well lit with ample room for multiple tables. A number of different types of games are run throughout the week, including board games, collectable card games (CCG), and tabletop miniatures. The Thursday board game nights are a great way to come down, meet some of the regulars, and enjoy an evening of playing some new games. Adult gamers will find a wide range of products and lines. There is lots of RPG, CCG, and miniatures for most of the major systems. The store staff is knowledgable in most of the games and if they can't answer a question, store customers will often chime in and help. The store has been particularly good for the kids. We have found a number of games, puzzles, and activities for our kids and often shop there for birthday presents. We can usually find something for just about everyone, except for toy ponies, that falls within the typical price range for birthday gifts. read more

It's important that Friendly Local Game Stores continue to stay open in this age of copious internet shopping options. However, Gamescape Norh is doing a few things that fail to differentiate the shopping experience from simply going online. The biggest problem has to do with the fact that they shrink wrap all of their books. One can't walk in an browse the stock in an effort to find something new. You either trust the blurb on the back of the cover or you don't make a purchase. Sure, you could ask the store clerks but they don't have encyclopedic knowledge of their stock. You could instead look up the RPG book on Amazon, Ebay, or the publisher's own site, see reviews from people who bought and played the product, then buy it for less. The shrink wrapping is also a nice waste of plastic and card stock (placed in paperback books.) I really don't understand the logic for the shrink wrapping. It's either a hyper-sensitive concern about keeping the product in perfect Mint condition or it's a cranky "Hey! This isn't a library!" attitude. Or maybe they can sell back to the distributor whatever doesn't sell, but only in perfect condition... There also seems to be a low turnover or a lack of bringing in new stock in their RPG and board game sections. I've stopped by the store during 3-4 intervals and seen the same exact products on the shelves. This either means they can't sell these products (because they're in plastic wrap and potential buyers can't check them out for themselves) or the staff isn't knowledgeable enough or good enough sales people. This lack of stock turnover has been so bad that it made me wonder if the place was going to sell/go out of business. What this probably boils down to is that they make their money off of the right side of the store (when you walk in) which is Warhammer and Magic the Gathering. I guess you have to cater to what keeps you in business.It's extremely rare to find game promo events on their calendar that aren't Warhammer/MtG/FFG minis games/D&D. Anything non-vanilla almost never gets promoted. If you're looking for a quality buying experience for RPG or Board game titles, you're better off doing research online and buying the product at a discount, or finding another store. It's too bad because I've lived in several cities with FLGS and there was nothing better than going in and killing time, and, more often than not, purchasing something you perused. read more

God, how I love this store. Any kind of game you could possible imagine, from Call of Cthulu-style role-playing games to Cranium to those Host Your Own Murder Mysteries that go so well with fancy dress and a dry martini, is here. And I have bought the sexiest dice and cards and poker accessories here for card nights. The store is a pleasure to visit; I go all the way to San Rafael to get my game stuff rather than shopping closer and less inspiredly to home--and I don't even drive a car. It is easy to navigate, soundtracked by really fantastic music whenever I have been there, and populated by an abundance of some of the coolest and most clever people I have encountered at any one retail spot lately, that's for certain. Now if you know me, you know I like to get my dork on. But the thing is that- like Isotope comic lounge, its sexy (unrelated) cousin to the south- Gamescape doesn't smack of dorkdom even a little. I have been shopping at this store for over 2 years now. I absolutely love this store. The workers are super friendly and funny. Their events are all really fun. They are very nice and loyal to their regulars as well as their new customers. They have a good range of products and if something is out of stock or not carried, they are more then happy to special order it. Also if there is a game you are interested in, they are more then happy to teach you how to play it and/or give you any information about it that they have. I highly recommend shopping at the store. If you like a fun atmosphere, super cool music and a bumpin music, this is the shop for you. They will fullfill your ever gaming need. I seriously cannot get enough of this store and it's employees, it is a joy to shop and spend time there. My family and I went into Gamescape for the first time last weekend and had a great experience. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and asked if we needed help finding anything. We needed a puzzle, a gift for a young boy, and some travel games. I wish I knew the name of the guy that helped us so I could mention him directly for doing such a great job. He showed me where the puzzles were, suggested a gift for the boy, and had some other good ideas for travel games as well. Though the store was crowded, they took the time to show me games that I never knew existed and explain why these games would appeal to the person that I described. They know their inventory, have games in every price range, are happy to help and aren't pushy. Love this store and I highly recommend it for unique gifts. This place is the best. A mind-boggling collection of role-playing games, walls and racks and columns of miniatures, a full panoply of Magic: The Gathering and Legend of The Five Rings cards, as well as lesser-known games, board games, even cards and chess sets, and the store has plenty of space to use them. The staff is friendly and helpful, able and cheerfully willing to give recommendations, provide advice and guidance, or kibbitz with you about your favorite game, and the store holds plenty of events to suit any kind of gamer, with tournaments, casual get-togethers, long-running RPG campaigns, and more casual pick-up nights happening regularly. I travel for work and enjoy supporting local game shops. This place doesn't need my help, they turned me and my wallet away claiming their event was "Max capacity" yet there were people behind me that called in and reserved a spot. Also a small group of younger players were turned away. Next time that should be stated in the information tab of their calendar. Well supplied (if your game is offered by Gamescape distributors), but not pleased with customer service. I purchased a game as a gift and tried to return it the following week as the gift recipient does not like games. The salesperson said there are NO cash refunds. I then tried to swap the game for Cranium (a very common game), but their distributors do not carry it. As we live overseas holding onto a Gamescape voucher made no sense. Another customer who observed this whole transaction offered to take my voucher and give me cash. The Gamescape sales person stated that this was unacceptable and attempted to keep us from coming to this amicable solution that worked for all of us. In the end I was able to trade my voucher for cash with the other customer but not without difficulty on the part of Gamescape. Conclusion: Bear in mind that your purchase at Gamescape will NOT be refundable and the old adage "the customer is always right" does not apply at this place of business. read more
