Many of the booths are oriented to "services" like spiritual & religious organizations. Many mainstream companies like roofing, home improvements, etc. Also boutique like stalls selling soaps, jewelry, rainbow hats, etc. The festival music is blessedly quieter reflecting the more low key, sophisticated small town feel. However, there are still hallmarks of "infinite diversity expressed in multitudinous fashion" which is a sign of a heathy society. A society that suppresses is destined to decline from the weight of its own oppression. Originality, initiative, innovative ideas, thinking out of the box needed for a flourishing culture goes out the window. A few food truck options. The one that interested me was Nouvelle Pilipino which didn't use Baboy/pork, the most esteemed land meat of the Phillipines. Unfortunately, we were due to go to beach view Bella Vista Restaurant at the Four Seasons Biltmore so will have to check out the Pilipino food truck at the next year's festival. From The Independent we learned of the SB Dance Center's $7 dance lesson and practice party afterward and decided to give it a shot. The Center is spacious with a nice-sized lobby for chit-chat, and two generous ballrooms with good fans and nice art. Class was surprisingly well-attended for a rainy Saturday night and we were treated to a Charleston/Lindy Hop lesson. I've been Lindy Hopping since '98 (damn I'm old!) but I appreciated the refresher. Our fellow dancers were from a variety of backgrounds and ages, and all were kind and friendly, exactly the wholesome type you encounter at a swing dance. The instructors did a nice job incorporating the basics for all the beginners and even tossed in a couple of more advanced moves for those of us long-time lindy hoppers. We stayed after for the practice dance, and although it was initially weird getting asked to dance (and asking guys to dance again!) it was super fun and I know Chun P. wouldn't mind. Every Saturday night the Center offers a different type of dance lesson, and I'm looking forward to dropping by for a dance and seeing my new friends on my next trip!

Recently, I witnessed her father…read morebringing recording equipment to rehearsals and filming full performances of other dancers from behind. I documented this and reported it to the studio. Their response? It was "just a parent" filming, and they saw no need to take further action--even refusing to ask parents to only record their own children. In today's world, where recordings of young girls can end up misused online, I expected more awareness and safeguards from the management. A simple policy or announcement would go a long way, but instead, they offered a vague, dismissive response. I find this lack of action concerning and irresponsible. If your priority is your child's safety, I recommend finding a studio that takes it seriously and sets clear boundaries around filming.

I have had the sincere privilege to volunteer at Transition House, off and on, for about 10 years…read morenow. And the reason I keep coming back is because Transition House truly does make a difference in people's lives. When I'm serving plates of warm food to young, rambunctious, bright and articulate kids, I can see what a service that Transition House provides to the Santa Barbara community. This is not a place where families are forgotten about. I love seeing the parents working on homework with their kids, to then go on to take more classes themselves, on site, to take advantage of every opportunity to better themselves and their situations. These are truly loving families on their way up and I'm so glad that Transition House is there to provide that space!!

I performed here with a quintet called Max and the Makeups almost exactly 10 years ago, July 2nd 2010. I understand why some patrons might have been a bit intimidated by this place-- before the music started, there was an uneasy, restless vibe; I had the distinct impression that the house was steeped in some really unusual mix of counterculture mythology I couldn't identify or understand. The audience and the other bands were a bit dubious when we arrived, probably due to our advanced years-- the term "hobby rockers" was muttered by some of the other artists-- but everything changed when the set started, and we delivered about an hour of some of the most savage punk rock I've played since I turned 50. The crowd was absolutely rabid; I hadn't felt that kind of energy in a long time, and I've only felt it a few times since. When we got offstage-- or the living room, or wherever it was-- my impression of the place shifted dramatically. I felt like I'd known everyone for decades, and it was like all of us were swamped by a wave of positive energy. I remember coming outside for a break while another band was playing-- I think it was RF7, but don't quote me on that-- and the walls were literally pulsing to the beat of the music. I remember being astonished that all the windows did not break and the doors blow off their hinges and into the yard. If the planet ever becomes more hospitable to human life again, I hope this place, or something like it, is resurrected.
