The cocktail in the lounge area.
    Angela A.

We had the 3 course dinner at Gantleys back in February and then due to nothing else being nearby - went again on our recent trip. It's just terribly old fashioned and expensive. My cocktail took about 30 minutes to arrive and was $25. It was good but not amazing. The food was pretty good but again not amazing. There was only one other couple dining and they appeared to be breaking up which was interesting to try and ignore. This time after being told to sit in the lounge area and read the menu, we had flashbacks to last time and decided to leave. Probably a good place to dine if you want a romantic, old fashioned experience that's expensive.

Caribe caught my attention due to its colorful Latin-inspired decor and tables/seating. I initially asked to order the prawn & cheese empanada, but the cashier told me they did not have prawns. Instead, I ordered the mushroom & cheese empanada, which did not dissapoint! The outer layer was crispy, flaky, golden goodness. The mushroom and cheese combo was not something I've had before. It didn't scream "Latin" to me, but that didn't stop it from being delicious. I also got an order of the vegetarian arepas, which was my least favorite of the two. I wish the veggies that came with it were more hearty; it appeared that they used something similar to a frozen mix of peas, corn, and diced carrots. Again, it was still yummy, but I think it could be elevated with beans! The arepa breading itself was fresh and crispy.

We ordered a passionfruit and regular frozen margarita and both were great! The place itself is colorful, cozy and vibrant which is exactly what you would expect from a Latin restaurant. The food came out pretty fast which is another bonus. The beef empanadas were some of the best I've ever had seriously. The arepa was another great choice and so were the quesadillas. Stop by if you're ever in Queenstown you won't regret this little gem.

Restaurant looked very inviting and the service people seemed very nice. We only wanted quick 'starters' at Captains, my wife had her Seafood Chowder (a bit too salty) and I had NZ Mussels - she diluted her chowder soup with some of the sauce from my Mussels and it tasted very good then. Next day, my niece and her husband flew in from Wellington to see us for about 8 hours before returning. After a cruise, we went to Captains again for a late lunch. My wife and I ordered the same thing as previous night - so good to get FRESH NZ mussels instead of the frozen ones that we normally eat back in the States! Seafood Chowder was still a bit salty for our taste, so once again, it was 'diluted'. My niece and her husband had Fried calamari with fries and salad, and Lamb Ribs. We all shared a little of our food with each other, and all the food was very tasty. Since it wasn't overly busy at that hour, we stayed and chatted a bit, though we did tell the staff that, and they didn't have a problem with that. All in all, the food was very good and the staff was super-nice and friendly. Restaurant centrally located.
