I had already scooped up what I was after at a nearby store, but what can few dozen sniffs hurt? Everything offered is geared towards self-care of some variety. They have tables and shelves full of handmade items including soaps, candles, salts, shower steam tablets, bath bombs and more. I absolutely love the colors and scents of the soaps, and they also had a few local color variations to celebrate the Vols, Preds and Titans. Was really cool to see! Pricing is not terrible, and is in line with what I would expect from a local spot. Service was wildly friendly and helpful. Was welcomed upon entry, helped on the floor and wished a good day. She was the fourth stranger to ask me that, and I did read it. I took that as a sign from the Universe. So I went to the place and it reminded me so much of St. Augustine, Florida. It is a mystical hippie dippie trippy world hidden in this small town. If you want an otherworldly perspective of the Clarksville, TN and Fort Campbell, KY area, wander into Valhalla's Gate (209 Dover Road in Clarksville, TN 37042). It is the area's only Norse based Pagan and metaphysical store with tea leaf, tarot reading, and unique events. They carry local artisan products and the funniest wicked candles in the world. It may not be the first place that comes to mind when holiday shopping but I had the idea of gifting a series of flowers that align with birth months, anniversaries and special memories as gifts. Think of it as 'art' that lives in your yard. But that's about all I had figured out. Luckily, the folks at Bates took care of the rest. First things first, the place is large. It's not overwhelmingly so (so, not Opryland) but it's big enough that if you don't know what you're doing or what you're looking for, you're going to be the Sims character who just spins. Not being shy about my lack of clues, I walked up to the desk and said what I was trying to do/buy and I didn't know what else to do after that. After being complimented about my thoughtfulness, I was tag-teamed: I was given directions to find a specific person to talk to about flowers and another about shrubbery. Given that you will actually be walking through distinct areas/zones, I was given landmarks to note. I appreciated all of this. I was a fish out of water and every instruction was a sign of kindness. I found my first contact (who had been given a heads up by walkie talkie) and she was awesome. She was so awesome that I just went all in with flowers and forgot the shrubs. She explained zones, planting times, soil, perennials vs annuals, etc. I took notes (seriously). And then she started walking me through the selection. Bates.Has.Everything. They do. Don't ask. Just trust. And a side effect of having everything is fair pricing. They have everything and they have a lot of it so you aren't on the hook to spend a lot due to scarcity. I left the nursery with a bit of an education, plants that mean something to the recipients and continue to adorn yards, money in my pocket for other gifts, and a good feeling from shopping local and supporting a business that's been around for almost 100 years. There are so many cool businesses to discover on Yelp outside of food and drink. Dig in, explore and patronize what makes your metro unique.

They have a decent selection. Granted, they can't compete with Home Depot or Lowe's in size of inventory, but they offer what you need at a fair price point. All in all, this is a great local mom-and-pop business that is staying viable in this day of global hardware stores.

There wasn't too many additions to Franklin Street since I was last here but Mildred and Mable was unfamiliar so I walked in. I've been in shops like this before and I figured I would just browse and be done with it. I wandered around and I did end up finding some things to buy and then meandered my way to the counter. While I was being rung up I asked what time the store closes and was told 6. I checked my watch and it was 6:15. I walked in at closing time, wasn't told they were closing and was still allowed to browse. I immediately apologized for coming in when it was closed and just as quickly was told it was fine; stuff like that goes a long way with me.
