Despite our efforts to protect our neighborhood--fighting to install stop signs, speed humps, and lowering the speed limit to 15 mph--they still drive through our narrow street as if it were the 805 during a car chase. I know the principal works hard to remind families to slow down and respect the community in which this school resides. Unfortunately, too many ignore those reminders. Their disregard makes it clear they simply do not care about the safety of the residents who live here.

We have experienced different teachers year, and each one has been more than exceptional. They have been absolutely lovely, caring, thoughtful, smart, and have the best interest of our kids, their classmates, and even their community in mind. They have been taught not only the basic academics, but also how to be a good human in this crazy world, and how to lean on community and their peers to grow and become educated. I have felt like the teachers have always kept the individual student in mind, and advocated it on their behalf for all of their needs. The school, the teachers, the staff, down to the janitors....Absolutely lovely. The community that is involved at Mckinley Elementry school is the absolute best. There is a constant fundraising happening by the parents and community to support Mckinley's vast programs. The jog-a-thon, Sono Fest, the Gala, etc. Programs like music, theater dance for, art, and Spanish, our kids have been getting a very well rounded experiences in elementary school.

At this duty station, things were especially tough; we had to go through three different schools in our first year here. That all changed when my husband found this diamond in the rough. Before CCPAA, our kids attended a private school that felt cold, cliquish, and unwelcoming. Finding CCPAA was like finding a second family. From day one, we were welcomed warmly, and it has made all the difference. My children have been at CCPAA for a year and a half now, and they've loved every single moment. The teachers are passionate and truly engaged with the students, and the administration is always on top of everything. They create an environment that is not only academically enriching but also incredibly nurturing. What really stands out to us is the vibrant creative offerings--dance, music, jazz band, art, drama, and more. For our family, creativity is just as important as academics, and CCPAA allows our children to explore both. They're thriving, not just as students, but as artists, thinkers, and young individuals with diverse passions. The school's inclusive, diverse environment and sense of community have given our family stability, warmth, and a place to belong in the midst of the frequent changes that come with military life. The stress put on us, the constant pressure, assignments and no boys all led me to therapy. This school does not prepare you for real life. It prepares you to work and function like a robot. All of my peers got diagnosed with anxiety/depression while being here and I would also argue that most of them were medicated. Your teenage years are such an important part of development and this school does not allow for the proper teenage experience. They put on the biggest facade, attempting to make the school look pretty and fun when in reality I knew so many student suffering in silence as they tried to make their way through graduation. These 4 years were the worst of my life and it's unfortunate the wasted money spent at this prison. I am so glad to be out and thriving. This is a warning to parents and potentially future students. The teachers are excellent. The administration does a great job in difficult circumstances (funding has dropped every year). The range of options that are available is greater than any other school in San Diego unified (lots of electives). The partnership with the community college allows students to take college-level classes for free, in person, on the San Diego high school campus. Also, personally, I think the diversity of the student body is a positive. Our son now knows kids from many different countries and cultures, and with different life experiences.

My experiences with this office have been good. The women I've met who work here are nice and quick. When I came here when the line was long, they churned people out. Visitor parking is limited and since the livescan office is packed in the mornings you might have to park on the streets but so you know, Birney elementary is next door so depending on the time you'll come across school traffic.

During my search, I stumbled across the Museum School, and it looked a little too good to be true. I also noted that they historically had a waitlist, so I was pretty sure it was going to be a no-go. I called anyway, and as it turns out, they had an opening in my child's grade level. I made an appointment for a tour. Every staff member I met, from the director to the office admin to each instructor, was friendly and welcoming. The kids looked and sounded happy. It was reassuring that my bright, school-loving child would be having fun, engaging in activities like fitness and art and music, but also be appropriately challenged with a good curriculum. This is not a self-led program, it isn't play-only--it's actual instruction with plenty of room to enjoy learning and discovery. To me, having come from a family of educators at the grade and high school levels, this marries the best of both worlds. It is both academic and hands-on, and my young child even has homework, but it isn't excessive. The kids actually get outside in the fresh air to play, and I have been welcoming the dirt on my little one's socks as a sign of a day well spent. I took time to actually read through the parent handbook, which I have done for each school we've been part of. Nowhere have I seen as thorough a section on what constitutes appropriate behavior between staff and students, and how both should feel empowered to address situations that feel inappropriate--I was absolutely floored, and my inner teen had a moment of healing and validation reading through the text. It brought an additional sense of peace around the decision we made to enroll here. This is a diverse staff and campus, with a diverse representation of humans who trust them with their children. I look forward to seeing how this school will positively impact mine.
