I got called slurs on a daily bases multiple times a day by many different kids. I was bullied so relentlessly that i couldn't even make it past November Break my 10th grade year and that was after wanting to leave the school 2 weeks into my 9th grade year. I had one friend who watched someone come up to me and say that i should go to bible study group so that they can "fix my problem" referring to the fact that I'm gay and then that friend brought me to that bible study group where they tried and failed to convert me. After this I only had two or three friends out of the whole school who didn't betray me the rest of my time there There were many other worse things that happened at this school that I will get into during therapy but not a yelp review I HIGHLY suggest that if your child is not a football playing asshole then DO NOT send them here ESPECIALLY if they are queer or different in anyway cause they will picked on until they can't take it anymore! Leaving this school was the best decision I've ever made for myself, my mental health, and all over well being as a person. We have experienced different teachers year, and each one has been more than exceptional. They have been absolutely lovely, caring, thoughtful, smart, and have the best interest of our kids, their classmates, and even their community in mind. They have been taught not only the basic academics, but also how to be a good human in this crazy world, and how to lean on community and their peers to grow and become educated. I have felt like the teachers have always kept the individual student in mind, and advocated it on their behalf for all of their needs. The school, the teachers, the staff, down to the janitors....Absolutely lovely. The community that is involved at Mckinley Elementry school is the absolute best. There is a constant fundraising happening by the parents and community to support Mckinley's vast programs. The jog-a-thon, Sono Fest, the Gala, etc. Programs like music, theater dance for, art, and Spanish, our kids have been getting a very well rounded experiences in elementary school.

From day one, we were welcomed warmly, and it has made all the difference. My children have been at CCPAA for a year and a half now, and they've loved every single moment. The teachers are passionate and truly engaged with the students, and the administration is always on top of everything. They create an environment that is not only academically enriching but also incredibly nurturing. What really stands out to us is the vibrant creative offerings--dance, music, jazz band, art, drama, and more. For our family, creativity is just as important as academics, and CCPAA allows our children to explore both. These 4 years were the worst of my life and it's unfortunate the wasted money spent at this prison. I am so glad to be out and thriving. This is a warning to parents and potentially future students. Our oldest is now a senior in high school and is earning the IB diploma at San Diego High (feeder school). He really learned a lot at Roosevelt, and I credit his Roosevelt teachers for laying the foundation he needed to achieve so much in High School. The family community at Roosevelt is wonderful. The parents are all very welcoming and helpful. They have fun, laid-back special events where everyone can have a good time. The campus is really nice (it was recently renovated), centrally located, and my kids love being right next door to the zoo. We just attended open house, and as always, I was blown away by the teachers. They all seem to really love being at Roosevelt and take special care of each student individually. They make learning fun, which can be hard in middle school. The academic rigor can be challenging, but the kids are supported while they learn. My kids have a special appreciation for a lot of their Roosevelt teachers, and the older one even keeps in touch with a few after all these years. The new principal, McGee (she started in 2025/26), is a great leader for this school and makes parents feel like they are a part of their students' education, keeps us informed, and seems to have great campus management. We feel that the campus is safe and the kids are cared for by all of the staff. Overall, I would highly recommend Roosevelt. One of our kids attended a charter school many years ago that didn't work out well, and it ended up highlighting the benefit of attending neighborhood public schools - they are special places.

The teachers are excellent. The administration does a great job in difficult circumstances (funding has dropped every year). The range of options that are available is greater than any other school in San Diego unified (lots of electives). The partnership with the community college allows students to take college-level classes for free, in person, on the San Diego high school campus. Also, personally, I think the diversity of the student body is a positive. Our son now knows kids from many different countries and cultures, and with different life experiences.

It's in a bungalow so it's kind of ironic having taken a class in a bungalow for K-12 and then going to a bungalow for non-teaching purposes at a school district. My experiences with this office have been good. The women I've met who work here are nice and quick. When I came here when the line was long, they churned people out. Visitor parking is limited and since the livescan office is packed in the mornings you might have to park on the streets but so you know, Birney elementary is next door so depending on the time you'll come across school traffic.

Our experience with Miller Elementary and Foster Elementary was extremely concerning and…read moredisappointing. While attending these schools, my child came home on multiple occasions with unexplained bruises or marks, and I was never given a clear explanation of how they happened. Because my child has autism and may not always be able to communicate what happens during the school day, this was especially alarming to me as a parent. At Miller Elementary, when my child was still in diapers, he came home several times with red bumps around his bottom. Around the same period, he suddenly began putting his finger inside his bottom, which was completely out of character for him. After I removed him from the school, this behavior stopped completely. I repeatedly asked the school what could have happened, but no one ever gave me an explanation. I was repeatedly told that they did not know and essentially felt that everyone was simply washing their hands of the situation. I also have serious concerns about the adults the district chooses to place in positions of direct care and supervision of children with special needs. I personally questioned why older male staff members were being placed in these positions, and I did not feel comfortable with it. This is my personal opinion and concern as a parent. When children are vulnerable and may have limited ability to communicate or report what happens to them, I believe the district should exercise an extremely high level of caution in screening, selecting, training, supervising, and monitoring every adult who has direct access to them. I also contacted the person responsible for IEP matters at the district because I needed help addressing my concerns, and I felt completely ignored. Despite repeatedly bringing these concerns forward, I did not feel that they were taken seriously or properly investigated. The most frustrating part of this experience was feeling that, whenever I asked questions about concerning incidents involving my child, no one seemed willing to take responsibility or provide answers. Parents should not have to fight this hard to have legitimate concerns about the safety and well-being of a child with disabilities taken seriously. I hope the district improves accountability, communication, staff screening, supervision, and oversight so that other families do not experience what we experienced.

While some teachers and staff were nice or at least professional, some completely disregarded the students feelings. At the time I was going through a rough time and would often have issues with getting into trouble for 'skipping class' when I was crying in the bathrooms. When someone came into the bathrooms to get me, the office workers would tell I couldn't leave class or just not go, regardless of what was happening, unless it was some sort of 'real' emergency like medical. This part I'm not proud of. I got suspended multiple times for coming to school high, and there were a few times I had to leave because of hurting myself and getting caught with a blade to do so. Eventually of course I was told to leave, and while I know I could've prevented this, I also know I turned to these bad coping mechanisms because nobody was listening and trying to help me. When I was kicked out from the school the principal, Mr. Taylor, yelled at me and cussed, saying I was 'past the point of helping' and that I was hopeless. While I did do some things that I shouldn't have, students should be talked to properly and not yelled at for things they can't help like mental health issues. Many of my other friends experienced similar issues.
