If you have taste buds do your self a favor and don't come to this place. The food was dry with no flavor. The guacamole was disgusting, the cilantro was not cilantro. The quesadillas were horrible and a disgrace, the huarache wasn't a real authentic huarache, their horchata was just milk with sugar and had no flavor. The bistec tasted like it was in the fridge for days before being served. The tamale was so small and dry. I definitely do not recommend, I spent $80 for me and 3 other friends and we all were disgusted by the food. read more

Maybe I'm going crazy, maybe the people eating here have no food standards or maybe it just was not my day for this place but idk how this place has the reviews it has. I dined in with my family based on the reviews to be left with nothing but disappointment. My sister ordered a "steak" burrito and my mother and I "steak" tacos; only for us to be given food with not one drop of steak but the processed bootleg meat that's used to make "cheese steaks" called Steak-ums. Like wtf. The food was flavorless to add insult to injury. We asked for water and she proceeded to give us bottled; we asked for tap and she (owner, server, chef) didn't give us tap because she wanted us to pay for bottled. Quite authentic - the food was really tasty - mainly the tacos (all of them) and the posole was absolutely delicious. I had the seafood soup - wasn't great: too much of it and the freshness left to be desired. The young man serving us was very helpful and patiently provided advice to allow us to make culinary discoveries. Living in Scranton there are many options for excellent authentic Mexican food. Garibaldi is by far THE BEST. This isn't your average mall type tex-mex style place. As is said in other reviews Isabella and her family run the restaurant so well you feel like you're in her kitchen at her house. All of the staff is courteous and the menu is simple and delightful. Great place for a medium sized group or cozy up to the diner style seating in front and enjoy. This place is BYOB so bring your choice of tequila and have them make you a margarita! I also ordered tacos. These were the best tacos I've had since I was in San Antonio, TX. The roasted pork and pineapple were my favorite. Not sure about the other reviews calling it a dive, it wasn't. Very clean, very friendly. Counter top service. It was like a Mexican diner. From just this one visit they made a very loyal, soon to be repeat, customer. Very budget friendly. $1.50 per tamale (when you know the work that goes into tamales, that's insanely cheap) and just $1 per taco. read more

Went to this particular Mexican restaurant due to their YELP reviews. I am not sure we are all talking about the same place. My food was terrible!! My husband's food wasn't very good either. The place was not very clean and apparently the owner's children just hang around in there. My husband wouldn't tell me that he saw the cook swipe her nose with the back of her hand as she was handling food. I certainly would have left immediately if I had known this. The most authentic, delicious Mexican food I have ever consumed north of the border. Hands down. We were in Scranton for the Steamtown Marathon and were looking for a nearby Mexican place to gorge on some calories the day before the race. Garibaldi had the best reviews, so we gave it a shot. I am so glad we did. The fresh passion fruit juice was delicious, and all the tacos we ordered were perfect. The asada tacos were filled with the most crispy, flavorful steak I ever had in a taco. We also ordered a bunch of sides -- all quality. And the prices cannot be beat. The service was great. A really nice, young guy took care of us. Garibaldi is amazing. $1.00 tacos that are so good. I love the pastor and the chorizo. The service is friendly. You must try the horchata, YUM! The neighborhood is sketchy but oh my goodness is the food worth it. My husband likes their burritos but I always get tacos. I also love the dip they give you for the chips in the beginning. This is your quintessential hole in the wall. While passing through town, we came on the basis of yelp reviews. We almost got back in the car and drove off based on first impressions. But we stuck with it ... and are very happy we did. Excellent service. Even better food. The plate of guac they brought out somehow tasted fresher and had more pop than the tableside-prepared guacamole that is now an almost ubiquitous ritual at other (fancier) places. My wife and I were boring and had fajitas (we are very low-carb these days, which is limiting at a Mexican place) but LOVED them. Kids loved their selections as well. Don't let the run-down diner decor turn you away. It is worth a visit. If we lived here, we would be regulars. Bummer about the BYO-Tequila though.... read more

Great little place for street food style Mexican dishes. We started with the BEST tamales I have had in a long time (and I usually get mine from New Mexico). We ordered the pork in red chile. They were moist enough that they didn't need addiitonal sauce. My husband had the spicy pork enchis in red sauce. I think the salsa was a version of roasted tomato and jalapeno. It was far brighter in color and taste than the northern Mexico style sauces made with dried chiles. The frijoles charros were tasty but were only luke warm. I ordered the sopes and watched the cook make the sopes before setting them on the grill! They came topped with pork, chicken and the famous guacamole. The guacamole is good, although with a bit too much cilantro for my taste. My only quibble was that lime wedges and a little dish of salsa did not accompany my sopes. Portions were ample and a good value. The service was able and efficient. read more

Great food, simple décor and modest surroundings, excellent value. A family run place with very informal, warm and friendly service. Parking is available in the small lot to the left of the in-obtrusive storefront on South Main St. in West Scranton's 'dining district'. Really no atmosphere other than feeling like you are eating in the hosts home. You can even watch the TV on the wall...but the food is cheap and very good for the price. We have enjoyed both the chicken and pork burritos. I preferred the spicy Salsa Verde but red sauce is OK too. Guacamole was good and we have reordered. Drink selection is modest but authentic, with Mexican (and other) soda as well as a selection of juices in the bottle. BYO is welcome and they mix up a decent Margarita for cheap if you bring the tequila. Empanadas currently are a dollar each (note: 2014 prices are up. These are now $1.50 but still good). Since they're deep fried they are greasy but tasty. The chicken are terrific with the house chip dipping salsa. Three or four of these with chips might be all one needs for a meal. If you go with modest expectations re the ambiance, you won't be disappointed. read more

I recently decided to try it again, this time just got the guacamole and homemade chips, the guacamole was full of onions. Basically half of an avocado and a whole chopped onion. And it was like $7. This little hole in wall of awesomeness pleasantly surprised me when we moved to the Scranton area...I wasn't expecting the variety of electric food in the area and Garibaldi's reminded me of my favorite Mexican joint back in NY. The homemade empanadas that you can see being whipped up from scratch are BOMB. The chorizo and al pastor tacos are absolutely delicious as well as the plantains. Oh also, thank you for the garlic sauce that was perfection. Fresh, quant and family owned. wow, this place is great. yelp comes through again. my wife and came here about 4:50 and we were the only people there and were till we left. i know it was a little early for dinner but this place should always be packed because it was great. the building is nothing to look at from the out side, and It is in a slightly "shady" part of town. inside was clean but not nice. it looks like a mexican diner. it is great. we were waited on by a young man and I do believe his mother was the cook. we ordered the guacamole, and Taco's. i think my wife got something else but I was way too focused on the awesomeness of the Taco's to care two hoots about what she had. i think we were supposed to share then but that didn't work out so well for her. the tortillas for fresh pressed and thrown onto the Grill. the cook reached over and grabbed an avocado and started making guacamole. my only complaint would be there was way too much onion in the guacamole. we enjoyed our time and will be back. read more
