Came here when we stopped in Wilkes Barre enroute to our home in upstate New York. The decor is great. You feel as though you are walking into a party. The Staff was warm and welcoming. I ordered a Mango Mohito - it was delicious. We also ordered a Guacamole for the table. A woman came out with the avocado's and all the ingredients and made fresh Guac to order for us. That was outstanding. The ubiquitous chips and soupy salsa on the table was just OK - though we did snack on it endlessly. Still, it didn't have texture, tang nor taste really. Just a somewhat soupy sauce. I ordered the taco salad with chicken and my husband had dual burritos with refried beans and rice. They were good entrees. They filled us up. The portions were generous. Were they the best Mexican food we've ever had? Not really, but it was good food and we enjoyed our meals. We'd go back to El Rey Azteca again if we found ourselves in Wilkes Barre. Maybe this should be 2.5, because the ambiance was very fun, the service was very good, and the menu was very large. But the food was very so-so. We asked that the apps be half veggie, half meat, but instead each item was half&half, making them inedible for the vegetarian. The Horchata was not as good as others, and the leftovers did not seem good enough to bother taking on to our next destination. Our stomachs admittedly had been set for Thai, but that restaurant had closed early. One may want to return just for the decor, though. read more

Fantástico! We were headed home from Maine - stopped in Wilkes Barre for the night. This was our dinner choice and we were pleasantly surprised. Starting with the clever decoration out and in, immediate greeting and seating, fast and efficient waitstaff and delicious food! The night was great! We sampled a marguerita, pina colada and a Mexican Coke. Queso and chips - dinner was off to a good start. Our party chose, steak tacos, fajita quesadillas and chicken fajitas. Went to El Rey Azteca tonight for dinner with my mother and it was AMAZING! The decor was very artsy and authentic Mexico. The music was a little loud, but good and not so loud that you couldn't carry on a conversation. Daniella was our server and she was very sweet and attentive. The chips and salsa they bring out first were excellent. I had the fish chimichangas and side chile relleno. Food was AMAZING! I am surprised that there weren't more people in this place though! The prices are very reasonable and food is AMAZING! I highly advise giving this place a try! You won't be disappointed! read more

From the curbside, you will have no expectations but as soon as you open the door, you will be swept up in the spirit of this place! The decor is spirited and playful - be sure to walk around and admire it all. For our first visit, we tried a lot of options - taco salad, burrito and enchiladas supreme... plus three flights of margaritas. Salsa and chips were brought to our table upon arrival. It took a bit of time for our flights (because making 12 margaritas takes a minute!) but our giant lunch and drinks were worth the wait. Our dishes were not super spicy but favors were great. Food was very quick, hot, and fresh. The salsa was very good and the chips (a slighter thicker tortilla chip) tasted as if they had just been cooked (although they were not very good the next day). The side of guacamole was okay, needed more flavor. For our meals we ordered the steak tacos (steak was great, but the tacos themselves needed more flavor), the Chile relleno (a lot of sauce, could use more cheese, and was very large), the Azteca burrito (which was HUGE and had a lot going on, lots of flavors), and some regular beef hard tacos. I did really enjoy the spiced cucumbers and other sauces that came with the tacos, this helped to add different flavors. We would probably try this place out again as the staff was nice and the price was reasonable...though some things lacked flavor, the freshness was great! read more

The music is insanely loud. It feels like they are trying to be club. The salsa was just ok. Queso was also just ok. The margarita was not good. Super sweet and almost zero tequila. The Azteca burrito is just ok. Carnitas and verde salsa was the best part. Chorizo was not good and the red sausage was not great either. The part that makes this place the worst is the birthday celebrations. REALLY loud annoying song that plays way too long. Literally heard it twice during my dinner. While out of town for work I stumbled across this restaurant for dinner. When I arrived I parked in the plaza parking lot. I walked in and found the bar in the back and sat there. Kevin was the bartender and he was great. I started with the patron margarita and it was very good. I wanted to try the regular margarita which was pre-made and I didn't like it so I ended with the merlot. For my entrée I got the shrimp fajitas and it looked great. I dug in and I enjoyed it. So the place is authentic which is nice. The food was however mediocre. I got the chicken chimichanga which was slightly dry. The spinach and cheese enchiladas were also lacking much pizazz. Our friends shared the enchilada sampler but didn't finish their entree, which left me thinking that they didn't enjoy their food either. The rice and beans accompanying the plate was not very good either. The best part was the table side guacamole and very spicy hot sauce which we asked for. Also the sangria was huge and a great deal for the price! The Margaritas were strong. Most upsetting was that we were not even offered dessert option since I guess the kitchen had closed. I really enjoyed my dinner at El Rey. I was a little concerned when I saw that the restaurant was located inside of a strip mall anchored by a discount retailer. However the service was excellent. The waitress checked in with me multiple times throughout the visit. The ambience in the restaurant is the same as most Mexican restaurants, however I am noting it was very clean, and well maintained. The burrito I had was enormous, and very tasty. The chips and salsa were good. The only reason I am giving a four star rating is they forgot the cheese sauce I ordered in the beginning. We have been here before a few times and I feel I have to update my review. First, I feel important to say that we visited at what May be an off time of the day about 4:00pm. We both ordered the same drink, a straightforward margarita. Tequila, lime juice, and agave. Both tasted different and neither one was good. Surprising. My wife ordered the street tacos (chicken). She absolutely loved the street tacos that past few times we were there. Did I say, she loved them?! Really loved them. However, this time they smelled like fish (not good when you order chicken) and she couldn't eat them. We were polite and didn't complain but I must say it will be a long time before we go back. It's in a shopping plaza which might give the uninitiated pause but wow... this place is GREAT! We felt this might have been the best Mexican food we ever had!
