I went in as I always do when traveling back to Lunenburg where I grew up. I have always loved this spot as a local and it usually saves me a trip for buying local goods before I fly back to where I'm located now. I usually purchase their overprice maple syrup or a unique blueberry wine when I'm in a pinch and two other spots were closed that day, Hollis hills and Roots. However after waiting for the young cashier for legit 15 minutes going back to get her manager THREE times to find this overpriced maple syrup in their system. I was very pleasant in a good mood saying I wasn't in a rush because I had 30 minutes and it was the last thing I was doing before flying out. Then I payed for the syrup and their system crashed. They had to spend another 5 minutes getting it running again, when they went to run my card a second time it was denied. I said that's strange it hasn't EVER happened. So they said your going to have to figure it out, so I went to my car signed into my chase app and discovered I was already charged, so I went back inside and tried to show them that purchase along with others that had gone through that week. It clearly said 35$ from Lanni Orchards. At this point the young cashier went to get her manager for the 4th time, this time she refused to even come look or talk to me and told her employee to say there was nothing they could do?! I will not be wasting anymore time or resources at this location. I didn't get the syrup I was charged for an then had to waste even more time fighting that charge?! I wasn't even a grumpy person though I felt infuriated after this transaction. Also wasted all my time and I didn't even have a enough time to stop at the Hanford's down the street.

Sugaring off is a quintessentially New England activity. Normally I wouldn't offer this as something to do in mid-February. Maple sugar weekend is usually in mid March. But, I read an article in The Union Leader written by Allegra Boverman. She titled her piece, " The sap is running at Babel's Sugar Shack". This is how I discovered Jeff and Paula Babel's Sugar Shack! This is a small, wood fired maple sugar producer located at 323 Hurricane Hill Rd in Mason NH. The Babels (pronounced Bay-bell) are both wonderfully friendly, knowledgeable, and interesting to converse with! Jeff is passionate about maple syrup and is happy to share his wealth of knowledge. We viewed the entire maple barn, equipment, and enjoyed all Paula and Jeff shared with us about their maple syrup production. They have a shop behind the sugar shack where maple syrup, candies, and other delights are for sale. The sugar shack is very new and clean. The equipment is gleaming stainless steel. The shop is super welcoming with tables and chairs for customers to sit and enjoy treats. Babel's is an award winning maple syrup producer! Most recently they won second place in the NH Maple Producers Association Carlisle Award competition! They were competing against the best of the best and won second place! If you go to their Facebook page you can see the other awards they've won, including Best Sugarhouse in 2021 from WMUR! Babel's Sugar Shack LLC has earned the New Hampshire Seal of Quality from the NH Dept of Agriculture! They have an adorable, young golden retriever, Winnie; she is happy to greet you and loves to chase snowballs! We purchased two containers of dark amber syrup because we love super maple-y maple syrup! The Babel's are readying the sugar shack for Maple Weekend this year, March 16 and 17! I called ahead to make sure they were really open. Even though they weren't making syrup today it was still a wonderful outing! I highly recommend visiting Babel's Sugar Shack, if not for award winning syrup, then go for the lovely ambiance and great conversation!

Staff always call out and the managers solution is to make other staff work 6 days a week. The staff seem miserable, nobody knows where anything is when you ask for help, they act offended like you don't at them. It's not very clean, products are often not stocked properly so you have to ask to check the back. The people running the front where the registers are act extremely unprofessional, there have been times they've been throwing things back and forth while customers were around. All the decent staff seem to have left, now all that's left are people who can't communicate properly or do a poor job at what they're supposed to be doing. More times than I can count, my bags have ripped because the baggers don't pay attention to what they're doing and I've lost stuff from breaking when the bags rip open. The produce is hit or miss, often going bad or covered in mold, like the strawberries. One time I went through six containers trying to find one that wasn't covered in white fuzzy mold, and eventually gave up. The company slogan used to be ", focusing on friendly" when you looked at the name tags, but it feels very very far from that nowadays. If I wanted miserable workers and a sub-par experience, I could just drive down the street to the dollar store. Overall, negative 3 stars out of 10. Not sure who runs it, but it's a far cry from functional.
