Boiled pork knuckle, grilled sausages and salad

Cozy little restaurant attached to a hotel. We stopped by here on our last day in Berlin as our hotel was in Ku'damm and we wanted to get some local German food nearby. We ordered the sausage platter (3 different grilled sausages) as well as the boiled pork knuckle and a salad. Drinks we did the rhubarb soda as well as a Lager. The sausage platter was a little underwhelming as it was fairly salty and some bits were burnt. Would skip this in favor of some of the more interesting dishes on the menu (deer goulash I think was one of the other options). The boiled pork knuckle was great! Although boiled, it had clearly been marinated expertly before hand as it was packed full of flavor through the entire knuckle. Paired with sauerkraut, it was a stunning combination. Awesome to have both the boiled version from this place as well as the grilled/fried version from Zur Letzten Instanz the day before! The salad was overall tasty but had some sand in it which was unpleasant. Quite harsh on the teeth and we had to skip eating some bits of it. Rhubarb soda is a personal favorite of mine so nothing much to be said there. The Lager was a bit strong on the alcohol, Pilsners are generally smoother. Obviously this bit is no fault of the restaurant but just something to be aware of for folks looking to try German beer. Service was generally fine, the waitress spoke English, but not sure what happened at the end. We finished our food and made eye contact with the waitress numerous times but somehow she just never came by with the check until we had to explicitly flag her down. A bit of an awkward end to an otherwise great meal.

The location isn't bad really at all! It's off the busy part of the street which makes it better than the other. It wasn't crowded so it was easy to find a spot. The food was just fine. However nothing to really go on about. If you want to get off the Main Street then this is the place. But don't stop for just the food. You can find other places that are better.

Looking for real German food in Berlin, look no further, this is it!! Seriously, everything exceeded my expectations. The food, the ambiance, and the service were spectacular! Drees and Ela were the people who were taking care of me, , and they were just delightful! Very kind and appreciative that we chose to visit their restaurant. Huge menu with lots of choices, and you can't go wrong with any of them! This place was a fantastic find, and I very much look forward to returning!

I notice many local people visit this restaurant. The seating distance are pre-covid structure. But, not too worry, they have large window that always opened up (visited in early June) Ordered the seasonal Asparagus soup, Bradwurst platter Well balance and seasoned meal! Cannot have enough of their sauerkraut, potato dumpling. Good customer services.

Had a great meal here last night overseas. When in Berlin I thought why not have schnitzel and so off to Yelp I go. And it's about a block from my hotel... so I go into this very authentic German spot that is filled with energy and people. Once again, Yelp has me covered. I go basket of bread ( on the House ) and I hide red wine. Both were good. Great menu with all the German classics and I go schnitzel. Comes with simply the best potato dish ever. Sliced potatoes grilled with onions that were seriously additive. And a BOWL of red cabbage. The schnitzel was perfectly cooked and tender and when paired with the other two sides... a great meal. Service was great, friendly and local. It's off the main road but easy to find. Loved it and it would be my first stop next trip!

I wanted German for dinner and so sought out on YELP where to dine on my most recent trip to Berlin. It was definitely a meat and potato's kind of night. 1) Berlin style potato and sausage soup: I loved how simple yet flavorful it was. Delicious soup! 2) Spaetzle with pork, and creamy mushroom sauce: egg like pasta with tender pork and mushroom cream sauce was perfect and I really enjoyed it. Simple ingredients prepared with love and care. Would definitely come back when I visit Berlin in the future.

This is a great local restaurant if you want tasty German food. We walked over a mile just to try this place and it did not disappoint. The menu thankfully had English descriptions so you know what you're ordering. They have an extensive menu so you have an option to order a variety of items. The food was delicious! And the one item they had that I was impressed with was their Heinz Pommes frites sauce. No joke, it was really good with my fries. I ordered the schnitzel and it was a big portion. Food was great, atmosphere was friendly, and overall it's a good choice to try local German food.

I'm in Gasthaus Krombach, beside a fellow artist. My nemesis, Robert. Of all places to celebrate a bachelor party, he chooses Berlin, a city war- torn by fascists and communists alike. Back in NY, Robert is svelte, always dressed in black. At Gashaus Krombach, he's in a red, lumberjack flannel--much of it unbuttoned---and I can see his man breasts, the V-spread exposing his chest hair and tattoos. He even has a nipple ring, and at an angle, there it is gleaming. And even in my depressed state and Robert's belligerence, we stumbled on a good experience. I almost feel unworthy of this lovely bar. The owner is towered above us; there must be a platform of which he's standing on behind the taps. He asks us where we're from. I look at Robert and think, boy he's making us Americans look bad. Funny thing is, Robert's a Brit. Doesn't always pronounce his t's. I tell the owner, "New York." I'm wearing a burgundy flat cap and houndstooth blazer like a true gentleman, not like Robert, who's like an honorary Sex Pistol. The owner is nonetheless well-spoken and friendly, recommending which beer shall sustain our buzz, which we've been swimming in since leaving New York. I tell him, "I'd love the liver and onions," and whichever beer he recommends. Nothing sour. My mood is already that, after-all. Robert doesn't eat. Only wants to drink. He's only concerned with drinking and drinking, and letting his few whips of chest hair into the room from his splayed flannel. With sleeves rolled, he's whispering in my ear to ask this gentle owner where we can find some women. I tell him to go have another smoke. When my liver and onions arrive, Robert is outside. I take a bite, eyes closed, savoring the quiet, thinking I better find him some women. It's my duty as his best man, and perhaps he chose Berlin because of it's night women. Whereas I am a shy type, delighting in Berlin for it's cute restaurants of yellow light, liver and onions with fried apples.

Absolutely awesome German food. Friendly service, welcoming ambience... it's really a fab place for a good hearty German meal. I highly recommend getting something other than schnitzel, although I'm sure it's great here. The Klopse (meatballs in a creamy sauce) were fantastic. So was the stuffed cabbage. Servers / bartender speak English, a bonus for some travelers. Frank is an awesome waiter, too, sehr freundlich & nett. If they have chocolate cake... try it. It's different, but really, really good. :)

I went here on recommendation from Yelp and local colleagues. I'd never visited Berlin previously and went for work. I loved the Currywurst, the atmosphere, and the fast friendly service. I ended up going several times during my short Berlin work trip.

Legit Schnitzel. Great service. Giant sized-portions, easily shared. The "two meatballs" dinner sounds small but the meatballs are baseball sized and so good. Wiener Schnitzel and red cabbage were awesome. The Roast Pork could be cut with a fork! Very cool place! Warning: no AC but that seems to be a Europe thing

Anytime I travel, I eat local, no chains. This place did not disappoint. When in Germany....plus I love German food anyway. My dinner was the Berliner Sausage plate. Coming with 3 different types of sausages, one a Curry sausage. All 3 were grilled to perfection, all three great flavor, topped with mustard, laying on a bed of flavorful sauerkraut, not too bitter, a good standard kraut. A side of mashed potatoes, very flavorful. Eating local is always best.

O Mein Gott! This was essential German food. My husband and I were determined to have spaetzle (Swabian noodles) which did not disappoint! His pork was delicious and my Viennese Schnitzel was delicious. I did order a side of "gravy" to have with the spaetzle. Everything was delicious. For dessert we ordered the Appel Strudel mit vanilla ice cream. The best we have had! He wants to come back tomorrow night! Love this Gasthaus! read more

Wow I was so amazed by their food. I have been to three different countries is less then 3 weeks and this place amazed me. If my friends come visit Germany, I will for sure tell them this is the spot is the spot. The service was also amazing. read more

We grabbed the Krombach at late notice when our plans changed due to being let down by another restaurant. Possibly the best thing that could have happened! This place is a little gem. Just off the Ku'damm by the Hard Rock Café you might expect good food, and fairly high prices. Well, you wouldn't be disappointed by the food - the steaks were wonderful - but the prices would certainly take you by surprise - in a good way. The greeting was warm and friendly, and we were given plenty of time to study the menu without being ignored or forgotten. In fact the waitress was very attentive and helpful. It was a pity we only discovered the Gasthaus on our last evening in the city as I'm sure we would have returned. read more

We ate here twice in 3 days it was so good. Great owner, staff was always hustling and the menu had lots of good stuff to choose from. It was busy both nights, but they do take reservations if you have a large group. read more

Great ambience, great service, great German food (English menus available), delicious beer. We were staying near the Giraffe Cafe in an AirBNB. We found this restaurant online and walked over to it. Took about 10 - 12 minutes walking through the park, by the train station, and through some commercial areas. The restaurant has a quiet ambience for a romantic meal. We showed up starving since we missed lunch while doing a walking tour of Berlin. We hit the jackpot with this place. Authentic, quiet, delicious and filling. Just what we had hoped for. Highly recommend. My husband recommends the pork knuckle and I recommend the chocolate cake. It was the best desert we had throughout our journey through Austria and Germany. read more

Stopped here on recommendation from the hotel and we were not disappointed! The food was really, really good! I recommend the potato soup and the meatballs. The place itself is excellent and memorable. Definitely make sure you have a reservation if you plan to come during a busy hour like Friday night. read more

Loved it! We ordered Berlin style potato soup with sausage (delish!) and the rump steak meal (steak was perfection...medium rare and soft enough to cut with a butter knife...melt in your mouth!) My son ordered the curry wurst (great flavor...fresh and kind of light lemony flavor, not overwhelming with the curry). Also banana juice which we loved!! Very delicious. Service was ok...the blonde older waitress mentioned in other reviews is ok... She smiled at us several times. It was very busy and it seems like she might be the one in charge...but our food came out fast enough and she checked on us several times. Very nice ambience, cozy pub-like feel with big doors opened to the patio but maybe just a bit fancier than a pub. Good price for the portions and quality! Took a long time to get our check though. My only complaint. read more

The best meal I had in Berlin. Extremely tasty food. I ordered the roast pork with potato dumplings and red cabbage. Covered in gravy. Delicious, delicious gravy. Service was efficient. Warning, the portions are HUGE! Even compared to the large American sizes I'm used to at home. I couldn't finish my dinner, despite being ravenous before. A real shame, because I wanted to try some desserts. I saw some at other tables and the apple strudel looked incredible. Share your meal and then get dessert! ;) read more

After we had a really nice meal we wanted to go there again as we have been curious about some other dishes on the menu. This time the restaurant was a bit more busy. As we asked for a table the waiter ignored us first (the same waiter that has been unfriendly already on our first visit). When we asked again he only said to us "sit over there and we will see what we can do" pointing at a small table at the bar. The wired thing was that there clearly have been some tables that didn't have the reserved sign. Anyway, after waiting some time we went across the street to an italian restaurant and had an amazing meal. This waiter should have chosen another job, he clearly isn't good in this one... One of the worst waiters I have experienced. Downgraded one star for the waiter, was even thinking about downgrading 2 stars as I have never experienced a worse waiter to date... read more

A very nice "gasthaus" as the German call it. No friendly dog at the time when I was there (mentioned by others). But there was friendly staff. I enjoyed my typical German Currywurst. Not the cheapest in town, but for the money you get two of them with french fries. The place is very nice and everything I expected from a German gasthaus. Typical German furniture and the walls have historical pictures of Berlin on it. The menu is also available in English. I've had a great time here! read more

I went there for dinner on a Wednesday night at 7:30 and it was packed. Great atmosphere with the obligatory German memorabilia (classic & WWII). The food selection was great. I had the Berliner Eisbein (boiled pork knuckle, smashed peas, and a boiled potato) and a Krombacher Pils... and they were the perfect way to start my month in Deutschland. read more

It was very okay, I thought. Good locale off of Kurfürstendamm, nice little old world feeling inside. Carpeted which is weird here, but nice place. I ordered the grill special, which had little cuts of turkey, pork, a steak, and a sausage. The meats where a bit watery, especially the steak, which makes me think it was frozen. They were seasoned okay, cooked well. My wife had the pork schnitzel, it was not that good. My brother-in-law had the Eisbein, which he liked. All-in-all it was very average food, and for spending €20 each to get it (with two beers and a bottle of water), it's just not worth it for the price. In Berin I kind of expect better than average for that money. So, I wouldn't necessarily not go back, but I'd probably try some other German food places before going back here. read more

This place is outstanding for authentic German food. My husband and I came here for dinner and ordered the meatball appetizer it came with pickles, one medium size meatball, bread, and salad on the side. The meatball was delicious it was juicy n had a great flavor. I ordered the lamb stew and it was incredible it came with smashed potatoes. The lamb was tender, juicy, and easy to eat the sauce was amazing. The smashed potatoes were good. Customer service was great and ambiance was nice. read more

A very nice dinner of authentic German food. Service was prompt. They asked if we had a reservation but it was not a problem we did not. Terrific seat right next to the window. I had the Schweinebraten and it was a little fatty although delicious: the dumplings and the red cabbage were excellent. One of the boys had the Weinerschnitzel and enjoyed it. Another had the Steak and said it was very flavorful. My wife had the Vegetarian dish and cleaned her plate. Portions were decent and I would come back here again. read more

If you have a chance to visit the Gasthaus, do so!!! Even if you have to wait. The food is delicious and the servers work so hard. We visited on two different nights and tried four different dishes - loved all of them. Beer was great as well. read more

Was in Berlin on vacation and wanted original German food. Stumbled upon this restaurant and was extremely impressed. Staff was very friendly, and spoke English, and had English menus. All typical German/Austrian food is available, and the prices were very fair. I enjoyed the bratwurst which came with a large portion of sauerkraut and potatoes. I would return here easily for delicious German food. Highly reccommend. read more

My family and I went here for our first dinner in Berlin (and Germany for that matter). We completed a 3-1/2 hour walking tour through sprinkling rain in the cool spring temperatures and had the appetite to prove it when we walked in. I was having a hard time deciding which sausage I wanted. Fortunately, they offer a 3 sausage platter! It was served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Totally hit the spot. My wife had the Wiener schnitzel and my son the currywurst (his first of several ). The beer was perfect, a nice pils to accompany it. Ambience -5 stars, superb Gastropub / supper club feel Service -5 stars (thanks for tolerating my attempts at German and allowing me to switch to English). Our server was as welcoming and warm as an afternoon fireplace. Food-authentic, plentiful and tasty I hope you have a great experience at the Krombach ! read more

I stopped by for lunch this week. The place was not crowded but very welcoming. I ordered a standard menu item -- Königsberger Klopse -- and they were THE BEST I have ever eaten. Lovingly prepared, everything super fresh. A great place to escape the heat and while away some afternoon hours. read more

This was my first dinner in Germany. The restaurant is easy to fInd, has great ambiance, the staff is friendly, the beer was amazing, and the find was excellent. If you're looking for authentic German food, you're in for a treat here. Make sure you have Google Translate on your phone with German language loaded. They don't have English menus, as you'd expect in Germany at a German restaurant read more

Liked this place so much I went twice. Very traditional German (or at least central German) food at a reasonable price for the amount you get. I highly recommend anything with the green cabbage and meatball. It's sensational. And the servers are wonderful people. This will always be a stop when I go to Berlin. read more

What a fitting final meal in Berlin. Wish I had found this place sooner. Not the largest restaurant, but maybe the best original german food I've had so far. I had the sausage platter and the wife had the bratwurst platter. Both came with delicious sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, reminded me of my mother's cooking, who was born and raised here. If I ever get back to Berlin, I will definitely return to this place. I highly recommend this place If you are looking for original german cooking. Almost forgot, service was also great and so were the beirs! read more

Found this quiet lovely restaurant on Yelp. It was close to our hotel. We were not very hungry so a friend and I shared the meatball dinner. Meatballs, boiled potatoes, and red cabbage were all so tasty. I had a beer and friend enjoyed the Reisling. Split wonderful apple strudel dessert. If I lived in area I suspect I'd make this restaurant my go to place. Service was friendly and efficient. Server spoke English which was helpful. Menu was German/English also. Loved the warm decor and low light ambiance. Definitely try it. It might just be a 5 star place! read more

Located in the heart of the city, this restaurant offers delicious German dishes with reasons price. We were there at 9pm but there were still a lot of customers. My main dish was Sülze (pork chop with gelatin) which was surprisingly fresh and not with tons of fat, and the combination with the side dishes was also a great plus. read more

Just finished running the Berlin marathon and we wanted a traditional German celebratory dinner to reward ourselves. THE best choice we could've made! My husband had the Berliner teller (3-meat meal) with red cabbage. I had the smoked salmon with baked potato. Delicious, generous portions, and hit the spot for some empty stomachs. I'm not a beer drinker (even in Germany), but the variety was wide and mostly local. The staff are friendly and attentive even though they were visibly busy. Would recommend this place any day, and the neighbourhood it is in is lovely for a stroll and shopping after a meal. read more

I've visited this place several times. Nice menu and great service. I've had sauerbraten, red cabbage and salads and it was all delicious. I like sitting at the window table that overlooks the street. It's a homey place and has a welcoming attitude especially for this non German speaker from New York! read more

My wife and I wanted traditional German food while in Berlin and this restaurant was close to our hotel. What a lovely find, it was almost like dining in someone's lavish home. We ordered the potato soup and it was delicious. I ordered the requisite Wiener Schnitzel because, hey I'm in Germany for a couple of days. The salad was delicious, the French fries were great and the Wiener schnitzel, well, it's Wiener schnitzel! My wife ordered the pork with mushrooms and it was truly delicious. Our waitress was extremely friendly. If you are in the area, please stop by, it is great. read more

Excellent German food. I had the Wienerschnitzel and my wife had the cabbage rolls. Both were excellent. The roasted potatoes were perfectly prepared and mushrooms were a tasty addition in the mild white sauce. The Berlin potato and sausage soup was a great starter. The service was perfect. If you're looking for typical German food, this is the place to go. We had beer and curry wurst (being turists and all) and it tasted good, good value and our waitress was kind. Nothing spectacular but I recommend it if it's simple, manly food you're after. read more

Came here after a night at the Staatsoper which is nearby. Had to wait a bit to get some seats but the staff was always very friendly and professional. The menu was pretty traditional German food that you will find in most Gasthäuser although it did include some extra Berlin specialties. I ordered a really nice pepper steak (maybe a little too much pepper but that's nitpicking) and my wife loved her Zwiebelrostbraten. The meal came with a nice salad which sadly you don't see too often here. The restaurant is very nicely decorated with classic paintings and images of Berlin. Will definitely go back! read more

As an visitor from the U.S., I was craving authentic German cuisine on our first night in Berlin…read more Since our hotel was in the shopping district of Berlin, we had less than a 15-minute walk to get to Berlinchen. Upon arrival, we were asked where we wanted to sit, though we were advised that sitting outside was cooler than sitting inside. So we did just that. As they receive many tourists, they had the ingredients in English under each dish. Our server was friendly and showed us all the photos of the dishes on his iPad, which was helpful as we were not familiar with many of the dishes. He also let us know what items were not included on the menu and showed us the photos. We all ordered still water (in bottles), the Berliner Weisse, and beers. For myself, I ordered the Beef Gulasch with egg noodles (Rinder-Gulasch mit Pilzen & Spatzle). My husband ordered the giant currywurst with french fries (Berliner Currywurst XL mit Pommes frites). My parents ordered a salad and one of the non-menu special dishes that had pork loin, gulasch, bean sprouts, and mashed potatoes. The Rinder-Gulasch mit Pilzen & Spatzle had an enormous portion of egg noodles compared to the amount of the beef gulasch. However, since the gulasch was on the saltier side, eating the gulasch along with heaping amounts of the egg noodles helped balance out the taste. The beef was also tender and paired well with the texture of the egg noodle. The Berliner Currywurst XL mit Pommes frites was... interesting. I was expecting the currywurst to have a meaty texture, but when I bit into it, I found the texture spongey like tofu. If I was told the currywurst was vegan, I would have believed it. I think they should have included more of the sauce (ketchup) that came with it, but again, this is Germany, and you have to request and pay for anything extra here. My husband, who typically eats heavy, could not finish this plate as we were all sampling each other's food and he really liked my Rinder-Gulasch. When we come back to Berlin, we would love to try the other items on their menu. I highly recommend this place!

I understand that life happens, emergencies can pop up, workers can call in sick, etc. But as a responsible business owner you need to at least let your customers know that something happened. The food was excellent in taste and quality, and the portions were huge. My son also wanted Kaiserschmarrn -- a dish that is for two... at least -- but no one else had room to share. So he ate it (and loved it) and we took the rest home with us, which he ate the next day. Our service was also excellent! And the place was really cozy and unassuming. As we were leaving, it was starting to fill up, so although we didn't need reservations, definitely get them if you're coming for dinner. And although it's a bit of a trek from my side of town, I wouldn't think twice about coming back again.

The bartender greeted us with menus and took our drink order. The Chef came out and said "I am here to take your order since I am cooking it!" She was very pleasant and ready to please. I wanted french frys but the Chef encouraged me to try her homemade fried potatoes with the promise that I wouldn't be disappointed. I wasn't! When the food came out the Chef told my wife that she had brought two pieces of toast in addition to the small salad because one can not exist on salad alone and by the way, she had placed extra large portions of Schnitzel and potatoes on my plate because she was confident that my wife would want some of mine. In Berlin "der Laden " wenn man nicht nur Lust hat auf deutsche Küche, sondern auch auf die der Stadt. Die Portionen riesig groß , frisch und äußerst schmackhaft!
