Everything I needed for my first night in Europe to beat the jetlag. I ordered the octopus (in a can) with some bread as I had filled myself on snacks in the Air France lounge at CDG a few hours earlier and enjoyed a glass of Rose. The waitress was lovely and spoke English to help me along. I sat outside and watched the sunset. This is important to know: they take AMEX! Most places in Europe do not and I was so happy to have my corporate AMEX accepted. I highly recommend for a small bite after taking in the sight of Basel.

The food is fairly French traditional, but has touches of innovation, uses local (Alsatian) produce and as a result is very fresh and of high quality. Easily among the best French restaurants in the Basel Metropolitan area, it appears to be a fairly well kept secret; in our opinion unjustifiably so. We will visit again soon and enjoy their seasonal cooking. Be aware that the restaurant is not open for business over the weekend, perhaps one of the reasons for its relative unknown status.

You walk into a tiny dining room - maybe 4-5 long communal tables that seat ~20 people total. If you squeeze your way through the dining room and out the back door, there is a nice, fairly spacious patio with tables and chairs. Again, communal seating. The drink options are a selection of wines at various levels of fermentation and sparking wine (very good!). I think there might be beer as well. In any case, the menu is pretty simple: trout (fried or smoked) or schnitzel. Sides can be ordered separately. Think potatoes, cabbage, etc. I ordered the whole fried trout. It came with a side of horseradish cream sauce. So simple, so delicious! After dinner, we moved to an in-door table. With communal seating, you either focus on avoiding eye contact, or you make friends. The nice folks seated next to us ended up ordering a round of grappa for the entire table. It was lovely and a nice end to the evening. If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path "locals" spot, this is certainly it.
