This is a quaint outdoor canal side cafe. I could have stayed all day and enjoyed a lot of food and drinks. I happened to just stumble upon this place without any research. The food looked good being brought out, and the people looked happy, pretty crowded together. We took a table near the street and it was not a problem because it is a bike and pedestrian street only, and we also had a view of the canal which was very busy traffic. We asked for a menu in English and noticed it was on the back of the regular menu. Service was friendly as we ordered a bourbon and a beer at a very reasonable price. We then ordered a starter. Arugula and Cheese Croquettes with Sourdough bread. The 4 little fried croquettes were cheesy. It came with 2 slices of Sourdough bread and a little lettuce and tomato salad. That is more of a meal than a starter. For lunch, we ordered a Toastie Ham and Cheese and a Toastie Italiano. The ham and cheese was basic but the Italiano had a nice seasoning inside and a few thick slices of tomato on the slice of salami and cheese. Both sandwiches pressed perfectly, and both were very good. Sitting outside was lovely, and we enjoyed our meal, especially because the service was so good. I would definitely come back. read more

Food and drinks are absolutely delicious and the portions are huge! I had the veggie burger and it could've easily served two people. They serve mocktails, which is great for those who want to experience the ambiance of a gastropub without drinking alcohol. I had the "nojito" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. read more

This is a great little bar that has a very English pub feel about it. Its dark and cozy and is kind and comforting on a wet and rainy afternoon when you have a hangover to nurse. The bar staff are young and friendly, and we were even entertained with a beautiful Justin Beiber dance!! They have an extensive beer menu as well as a full bar. The food menu looked good and well priced in this usually expensive city. However, we went straight for the apple tart with slagroom (the rather amusing Dutch word for whipped cream!) and it was absolutely delicious. I'm feeling now that I should have eaten rather more of this fabulous traditional dish during my stay here, it's simply divine. They also get a bonus point for having a friendly local puss cat that sleeps on the back bar. Unfortunately, they don't have WiFi here. read more

This was basically one of those random places that I stopped off at simply to grab a meal with my brother. While it was pretty crowded there was a very good reason for that, and that was because there happened to be a huge party on in Amsterdam. Fortunately we were able to get a seat, though it did take a little time for our meals to arrive. I ended up having the steak with was actually pretty good, and my brother settled for the burger. One of the cool things about this cafe was the dumb waiter that connected the restaurant with the kitchen below, and sitting across from it was pretty cool. There are actually quite a few nooks and crannies around there, and the outside area next to the canal is also pretty cool, if you can get a seat there that is. read more

Almost didn't try this as it looked abandoned when I walked up. By the time I left, all of the patio tables were full. Two swans joined me outside in the canal during my lunch. Ordered the Caesar with brie --very good! Throw in a side of frites to fill up. Sangria special was worth trying. 4.5 € for a half liter relaxed me for the rest the day! I loved that the waiter brought 2 visiting dogs bowls of water while he took the tables order. Everything very slow paced. No rush for me to leave the table. read more

We chose a pub called Gasthuy's from Rick Steves' Amsterdam, Bruges, and Brussels. Housed in a really old building, you definitely get an old-world vibe here. You might call this pub food, but it's more varied and probably better than most of what you find at bars in the U.S. We had a Caesar salad with Brie instead of chicken and salmon with pasta, plus a side of frites (French fries). The food was excellent, but I could not finish the large chunks of brie that came on the salad. Of course, we washed it down with beer. Students run... for students. Very good prices... average good food. Good portions. The terrace across the street is really nice, facing one of the small canals around the Amsterdam University. Service was really nice. I took a cheese burger served with a nice salad and fries. Very good bargain. They have all kind of beers. The inside is nice and "gezellig" :) read more

We stopped here for lunch. We chose to sit inside as opposed to the tables set up right along the canal. It was quieter inside and the less popular place to sit. Sitting by the canal is beautiful it was just a bit busier. The lunch time menu is very small and simple. It could use a few more choices. We had the chicken club sandwich and it was a great choice. We also had the Mexican coffee which was excellent. The staff was okay. They weren't really helpful and friendly, but weren't incredibly rude either. Take it or leave it type vibe. read more

Cafe 't Gasthuys is one of Amsterdam's absolute marvels. In such a wonderful and diverse city Gasthuys is a beacon. Massive generalisation perhaps, but in years living here I've found Dutch meat to be of very varying quality, that's where Gasthuys comes in. Quality steaks, prepared excellently and served with brilliant Belgian chips and sauce you want to shower in. The interior is great and the staff are super friendly. An affordable gem in a sea of overpriced tourist traps! EVERY time I visit Amsterdam I come here, for the following reasons... - The steak is always cooked to perfection and the chips and garlic butter sauce that goes with it are delicious - The drinks are so well priced for Amsterdam whether you want la chouffe on tap, prosecco or (if you're an expat) a strongbow, they have it at a good price. Good selection of beers. - The staff are always friendly and happy to chat or recommend something. They don't ever hurry you even if the place is really busy - The atmosphere is great and they usually play great music, also it thankfully isn't too well known by tourists - The decor is cosy, perfect place to escape a rainy day for a few hours. I can't believe this place is 30 years old and not on Yelp! I was in the touristy part of town and desperately looking for something not touristy. I stumbled across this restaurant/bar and it was perfect! Ended up eating at the bar because the restaurant part was hopping! A historic location with a ton of ambiance- could be romantic for a couple and even handle larger groups (site says partied up to 16 will fit in there). Thursday night crowd looks to be mostly locals, bartenders were great and I had a huge ribeye dinner, a cocktail and a beer, all for under 15 euro. The menu is pretty varied and I'd imagine everyone can find something. There was even bar type food like tacos and small plates. I will definitely return if I'm fortunate enough to return to Amsterdam. read more

't Gasthuys is a really nice café to have a drink and to eat for very little money. It's located next to one of the University of Amsterdam's biggest locations so there are usually a lot of students (who also get 10% discount on their meals). The pub-style dishes all taste good and come in generous portions. I like their burgers and sate. Their are also really nice. This place has a great terrace outside. It is not very big but its located next to the water and the spot is just very nice. During nice weather it is often very crowded. Inside 't Gasthuys is very gezellig. The staff is also friendly. This is a great place to have a cheap and tasty dinner at a great spot in the centre of Amsterdam. read more

I thought this place was great, the service was good, the food was reasonably priced, they had free WIFI and most importantly the position was great. Sat right by a canal in a quiet(ish) little haven right in the middle of the hustle bustle of Amsterdam. I had the satay chicken and my wife had the caprese salad. read more

I came because I'd heard the Broodje Merguez was amazing. Unfortunately that was lunch menu only. Oh well, that's my fault I guess, nevertheless the dinner wasn't all that notable. Beer selection was a bit limited considering how much good craft beer is made in amsterdam. On the upside it's reasonably priced for its location. I'll probably drop by for that broodje at some point, but not for dinner again. read more
