The food was tasty enough, but the eggplant and pasta were both just solid versions of dishes readily available throughout the city. The eggplant was touted as a signature dish, but was merely an echo of others throughout the area. Aside from the hint of tahini it would be indistinguishable. Similarly, the tagliatelle pasta with salmon did little to make itself memorable. I believe that these dishes reflect the Kosher dining experience, but our high hopes were nonetheless dashed by their mediocrity. Gam Gam is not a breath of fresh air, although maybe we would have been happier had we thought of it as just another restaurant. After all, tomato sauce makes almost anything delicious.

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon Coop while we were walking around at night on Cannaregio island. We stopped to get water and I also needed to Kefer for a boost of probiotics. They were more affordable than other grocery chains but it was super busy and chaotic. We were in the self check-out area when the machines started breaking down and the folks in front of us were stuck waiting for staff assistance. We had to go to the cashiers. The lines were all long, but to their credit staff was productive. Overall good value if you're patient and don't mind a little chaos.

They are pre-made but are still fresh. Tell them which one you want. Have your Euros ready. Since there is a plethora of shops, they aren't very expensive. They will take your sandwich and put it in a toaster to make the bread crisp and the sandwich hot. They are very large. We split one. It was filling but I wasn't over stuffed. It was good. Keep in mind I'm comparing to other Italian sandwiches. If you're from the US and comparing it to Subway, quit. These are much better. Tip: You can get ticketed for sitting on the curb on the narrow streets to eat. They do post warning signs. If you want to sit, do it in a designated area. We were close to the hotel so we ate there. Each day the staff prepare a variety of vegetarian dishes from whole, organic food. We went there twice during our stay and had potato salad, seaweed risotto, a stewed kabocha dish, a cooked veggie medley with figs, and many other tasty dishes. We also bought some house-made pasta to take away, which was delicious when we cooked it a few days later. If you eat in, you can get a mixed plate of items of your choice (you pay by weight) served on a plastic plate. Or you can take out in plastic containers. The food is not cheap, but I feel it was a good value for the taste, ingredients, and variety (and I was also sick of mediocre Italian food and wanted some PROPER VEGETABLES!!). The proprietor was friendly and spoke English. Le Spighe is located on 1341 Via Guiseppe Giarabaldi near Arsenale east of St. Mark's square. I came in for lunch on a cold, rainy day and PER was the perfect spot to help warm me up and fill my belly with delicious food. The local cheese selection is impressive if you're looking to take some cheese home with you and much of it is made right there! I opted to start with their local meats and cheese board that was a great value for the price and then a local dish called frico that was hot and gooey and exactly what the doctor ordered. Imagine a mixture of potato and cheese combined together and baked into a crispy masterpiece with a gooey center served over a bed of shredded radish. It may sound a bit weird and look a bit odd when it comes out but trust me it was one of the best things I've ever had in my mouth :) You simply can't go wrong with potatoes and cheese. All of it was of course washed down with a glass of local Prosecco (at only 3 euros a glass). I realized as I was on the way out that you can actually tour PER's cheese factory and even have a special cheese tasting lunch afterwards. If I'd know I would have definitely taken them up on it.
