Well, it was interesting to discover a well regarded Glatt Kosher restaurant right in Canneragio, right over the Ponte delle Guglie near the Ghetto Ebraico (where the term Ghetto originated in the early 1500's.). It was a bit too cool once the sun went down, so we moved inside. Everything was excellent, Matzo Ball soup, lamb chops, hummus with mushrooms. Nice service. We were there on the early side but by the time we left the place was filled. If you have hopes to dine, especially during season, make a reservation for sure. read more

Gam Gam was so well reviewed and had such a unique premise that we were very excited to give it a go. While the food wasn't bad, it didn't make good on the promise of a different kind of cuisine in Venice. The food was tasty enough, but the eggplant and pasta were both just solid versions of dishes readily available throughout the city. The eggplant was touted as a signature dish, but was merely an echo of others throughout the area. Aside from the hint of tahini it would be indistinguishable. Similarly, the tagliatelle pasta with salmon did little to make itself memorable. I believe that these dishes reflect the Kosher dining experience, but our high hopes were nonetheless dashed by their mediocrity. Gam Gam is not a breath of fresh air, although maybe we would have been happier had we thought of it as just another restaurant. After all, tomato sauce makes almost anything delicious. read more

Enjoyed a delicious lunch here - there is something for everyone and nice to get an A/C break from the heat and humidity. The whole family enjoyed their meal and it was perhaps the only place in Venice without ripoff prices. Just make sure you visit the restaurant and not the bakery up the road. This was our best meal in Italy. Get a reservation! We walked in and the man said we take reservations only (dinner time). As we started to walk out he said come back in 15 minutes, and I'm glad we did. We started with latkes and applesauce, it was delicious. The applesauce is made from scratch and the latkes are crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. I only wish there were more than two in an order. For dinner we got schnitzel and tagliatelle with meat sauce. Amazing! Amazing that a kosher restaurant had the best pasta we've had in Italy. Gam Gam is a solid Jewish restaurant in Venice. the menu is vast so you have many things to pick from. service could certainly improve, it was hectic and confusing at times. the appetizer sample comes with a lot of small dishes to give yourself a taste of what's available. it was interesting. the hummus and baba ganoush were prepared in a way i haven't tasted them before. I can't say i prefer gam gam's version but, they weren't bad. eggplant ghetto style - it was just ok. pieces of eggplant cut up in different styles - it's actually a cold dish. the sea bass (17€) is a must try if you love fish. it was so damn good. it was cooked perfectly and the flavor of the actual fish stood out well. highly recommended. Fallafels were really really good, taste so fresh as well. overall, Gam Gam has good food and is worth checking out. read more

First, the lady who was serving us was so rude and was upset that we don't understand what is she trying to say as we don't speak Italian. After having breakfast which was awful, we tried to pay and she said they only take cash. I told the lady there is nothing mentioned about just taking cash. She said there is a nearby ATM. You know what you need after a long day of walking around in Venice? Latkes and wine. Just in case you dont know in order to make a latke all you need is some TLC, 2 times the amount of ingridients for a normal potato pancake and deep fry that stuff with lots of oil and you have a hearty meal. My meal at Gam gam was one of the most memorable meals of my time in Italy. The service my friends and I received was impeccable, truly one of the nicest I've received anywhere. This was some of the best Israeli food i've ever had! The server recommended that we try every appetizer, so we just followed his lead...and boy am I glad we did! We had hummus, pita bread, fried artichokes, babagounsh, cous cous, marinated vegetables, and latkaes with apple sauce, and everything was amazing! I know it may seem like an odd choice to go for Kosher when you're in Venice, but this is no ordinary Kosher food. All their dishes are influenced by the rich Jewish history of living among Italians for hundreds of years. You definitely won't find this kind of food anywhere else, not even in New York. Every dish blew my mind (except the gefilte fish, which is just not my thing and I'm yet to try one that I like). Ordered the Assaggi Israeliani, a mixed appetizer consisting of many tiny dishes of various marinated veggies, hummus, homemade hot sauce, and stuff like that. Also got the beef & eggplant moussaka and the beef kebab.The meat on the kebab was slightly on the drier side, but the seasonings more than made up for it. What a great stop after learning a bit if the history of the Jewish diaspora at the Museo Ebraico in Venice's Jewish Ghetto. An international, friendly staff is welcoming and informative. It is conveniently located on the Cannareggio Canal. The Israeli appetizers are sweet (carrots, raisins), tart (tomatoes), savory (ethereal falafel), and nuclear (harissa). As a person who makes matzoh ball soup, it's not like my home made, but good for the tourists. The pumpkin soup, however, is righteous: toothsome, sweet and savory at the same time. We were wandering the streets and wanted to find a local spot to eat. I did a quick search and saw that this place got some good reviews. The only problem was that my google maps showed the wrong location. Luckily we asked a local and he kinda pointed us in the right direction. It is located on the banks of one of the canals, but the entrance is on a side ally. IT is a very small restaurant but was packed. Fortunately, they had 1 table for 6 people around 1pm. ambiance: Nicely decorated hole in the wall type of place. Great for small groups (I would recommend a reservation). Tables are fairly close together. I didn't see outdoor seating. Restrooms are clean. They were rebuilding them so you have to wash hands in the bar area. Service: Very good overall. They all spoke fair amount of english and was able to explain all of the dishes. Bread was constantly being refilled. Food came out in typical fashion. Appetizers coming out fast, and main dishes a while longer. Food: For a party of 6, we ordered 2 antipastas, 1 soup, 2 pastas, and 2 main and it was plenty. We started off with the Gam Gam appetizers which included 9 different antipastos and falafel. All were different and good. We also had hummus with minced beef. One of my favorite. i had never had meat with hummus before. It was really good and went well with this spicy green sauce they gave us. The matza ball soup was very nice and clean tasting. i had the Spaghetti salmon pasta which was unique. Salmon was cooked nicely and went well with the pasta. We also tried their version of the fried artichoke. Very much different than in Rome. They cut it into pieces and battered. The sauce was good though. We also got the branzino. Very nicely cooked. My son wolfed it down in an minute. We also had the chicken schwarma. This was probably my least favorite dish. Value: Price was excellent for the quality that we got. We were in the jewish ghetto and asked a local for a good jewish deli. He said to come to Gam Gam. Please note!!!! There are 2 locations, one that is the deli and the other that is for dairy/egg dishes. I did not know there were two locations so when I asked what deli options they had, it really offended the owner. Walk two doors down and you will find the restaurant. My husband ordered the sardines which was sooooo good. Simple ingredients but very well done. I ordered the appetizer dish which was so-so. Great Jewish restaurant near the Jewish getting in Venice. We ate right on the canal and was even serenaded by a local with some traditional Italian songs. I love how they served many of our dishes like the humus and carrots in great little leaf-shaped bowls. Dress code: Dressy is misleading. My wife and I ate here on our stop to Venice and the food and atmosphere was great. But we wanted to clarify that most people were wearing jeans and tennis shoes, even the servers.
