It's early to make this kind of prediction, but this might be a top dining experience of 2023. There is a patio for a more casual meal with friends, then there is the intimate interior, with high back chairs, a sofa, and various 2 and 4 tops. The lighting is subdued, and I'm sending a big thank you for the unobtrusive table light that allowed me to see the menu and my meal. They got the light balance just right. Let's just get to it, because the food was wonderful. We started with the Moroccan roasted carrots served with hummus (zanahoria rostizadas). Prepared with pomegranate molasses and pine nuts, pita with zatar. We ordered it to share, then had a little fight over it, to be honest. I would have won, but I was distracted by the ensalada mixta, also ordered to share. Butternut squash, cranberry, goat cheese, pepitas, apple cider vinaigrette. The greens were fresh and crisp and exactly what I needed after too much vacation food. Then the pesca del dia - halibut. Served on a chickpea puree sautéed with fennel and leak, several spears of perfectly steamed asparagus resting beneath it, and a bit of artichoke on top. Every bite was blissful. We also had the pesto linguini with fresh vegetables. Crisp, nothing soggy here. The pesto was bright with that wonderful aroma only fresh basil has. We were entirely too sated for desert, but there were some tempting choices. Full bar, mocktails (I had a great mock mule with muddled blueberries), and bottles of local and imported wines. Service was top notch, dishes were timed to arrive at thier peak, and we were never rushed like you sometimes are in nice restaurants that need to turn over the table. Prices were a bargain for what we enjoyed. If you're in the area make a reservation on their friendly website and treat yourself to a great night out. read more

Visited this lovely restaurant for the fourth time this past Wednesday. Had the ribeye. Absolutely one of the top five best steaks I've ever had, and I've had plenty. Finished dinner off with an amazing espresso martini dusted with Parmesan cheese. Fantastic. read more

Fabulous meal! I was quite surprised when reading Mario's Bio to find that he'd worked at my favorite restaurant, Gary Danko's in San Francisco. This obviously set a high bar, and I questioned whether he'd be up to the task, especially in the middle of Baja where it is dramatically difficult to find the variety and quality needed for a high end restaurant experience. So... I approached the restaurant with some hesitation. But, after ordering ALL the tapas, for the group of us, some fun drinks, and fabulous deserts, every one of us LOVED them ALL. I had the most incredible dinner here on Wednesday night. My husband, cousin, and a friend had gone out on a fishing boat and returned with several yellow tail. Part of these were delivered to the restaurant in the afternoon and they told us that Chef Mario would decide what meal we would share @ our 7pm dinner. After we were very promptly seated, Chef came to our table and described how he would be preparing our food. We had appetizers of cerviche and beer battered fish and chips. The entree fish was served with risotto and zucchini and everything was cooked to perfection. It was an amazing meal and experience. read more

This restaurant would be considered "outstanding" whether it was located in Los Angeles or Santa Fe or Seattle or anywhere else. In other words, it isn't just "good" for Loreto; it is "good" period. There is a lovely sense of intimacy at each table due to the way the tables are placed around the restaurant. It was never too noisy even when very busy. Though it is not strictly mexican, I would not call it "american" either. To me, the various dishes are an imaginative fusion of several styles -- mexican, french, asian, italian, and so forth. The chef is clearly very talented and creative. The dishes are "visual" in the way that he "styles" them on the plate. He and his wife are the Owners and every night we were there during our week long stay in Loreto Bay so were they. It is fine dining at its best and yet elegantly casual. Highly recommend. read more

Truly outstanding fine dining in Loreto. My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here and were so impressed. My husband had the ragu and I had the fish of the day. Both were phenomenal. The service was also excellent, and we got the chance to talk to the chef. He and his wife (who is a server and clearly very knowledgable about wine and wine/food pairing) are lovely. The rest of the staff was very attentive, as well. The decor is definitely the nicest we've seen anywhere in Loreto, which makes the setting as amazing as the food. If you are looking for a "taco and burrito" Mexican restaurant, this isn't it. This is cosmopolitan cuisine that is hard to find in most parts of Mexico. Credit the chef/owner's experience at a variety of quality restaurants before he and his wife opened their own in the Nopolo area of Loreto. The decor is a blend of modern and rustic yet it stays simple and inviting. All of the materials are high quality and comfortable. The glassware and dishware are all hand selected to showcase the food and drink. No detail was overlooked. The most impressive thing is the modern kitchen on display as soon as you walk in. It is somewhat of a rarity in Mexico but the ability to observe and interact with the chef is a huge bonus. We had the pleasure to learn from both the chef and his wife how passionate and dedicated they are to their product. On to the best part, the food! The menu is seasonal so it will change. We tried several dishes at two different visits and were extremely happy with everything that passed our lips! One of the most delightful was a simple strawberry meringue cookie with fresh strawberry and basil dessert. Not only was it unique, it was a perfectly refreshing finish to our wonderful meal. The starters and mains were all just as great; lamb meatballs with house made pita and yogurt, crispy pork belly, orange carrot soup, garlic sautéed mushrooms, fresh catch over house made spinach pasta and a minimally seasoned (as it should be) ribeye. Every dish was perfectly assembled and seasoned. The combination of ingredients were not by accident. The chef's attention to detail shows in every dish as he not only hand selects the right amount of garnish and accompaniments to the main item, he places it with exacting care. The man is a perfectionist and very proud of his work! The most encouraging part about this experience was finding out that the chef is dedicated to working with local growers and ranchers to improve the quality of their products. This is a win-win for everyone. We are looking forward to our next visit to this part of the world and Gastroteca AZUL. read more

Gastroteca AZUL hosted our pre-wedding celebration here for 25 of our guests. They went above and beyond for our party, from printing out custom pictures of us as the bride and groom, to accommodating food allergies, and providing craft cocktails that were special to our guests. Their service, thoughtfulness and attentiveness to us and our guests made us feel like royalty! As most of us are from So-Cal and LA, we are used to great service which is not something consistently found in Loreto- Gastroteca AZUL stood apart from the rest. We are also foodies and eat at some of the best restaurants in LA- Gastroteca AZUL stood out as one of the best meals we have had, and could compete with any of the top restaurants in LA. The best part- there was not such a stuffy, snobby vibe that comes with the territory at the best restaurants in CA. Juliann and Mario, as well as their staff, were incredibly welcoming, friendly and engaged with their guests, making it feel like you were eating your favorite meal at one of your closest friend's house. Not to mention how beautiful their restaurant is, the outdoor patio is just stunning, clean and such an enjoyable space to have spent with our friends and family. Their food is beyond what we expected- feeding such a large party various dishes with each guests selecting their entree, they did an amazing job! All of the dishes, because I did try them all, were to die for. The steak was perfectly cooked, the fish came with unique pasta that was light and filling at the same time, and the chicken was seasoned perfectly! They also created a mediterranean style taco with lamb that was a delicious appetizer! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. Their desserts were difficult to choose between- they had a strawberry like funnel cake, chocolate cake and a pecan pie- all delicious and a great way to end the night. Along with the craft cocktails they had an excellent choice of wines that paired well with the dishes. Overall, we were most taken back by how wonderful Juliann and Mario were from beginning to end. They worked with helping us figure out transportation to/from the airport and the resort to their restaurant, were responsive to their emails in coordinating the meals, and provided as many options for our dinner to make it as unique and special as they both are. They are truly the gems of Loreto, and I would recommend them and their food to any traveler or passerby. We will definitely be returning to Loreto in the near future, if not just to visit Juliann and Mario. We can't thank them enough for what they did and how great the experience at their restaurant was! read more
