This organization needs a 10 star review! It's absolutely wonderful! Once lost, abandoned and scared, these sweet, timid stray animals are able to find homes in the caring arms of of the multiple people who work at, volunteer with and/or visit the Gateway Pet Guardians. With gentle care and significant patience, these volunteers nurse these furry friends back to health, offering so much love. The Gateway Pet Guardians is more than just an animal shelter. It's an animal advocate center. It's a pet food store. It's a community vet and clinic. It was so enriching to visit yesterday! Our hearts are so full! read more

I could go on forever about how much this organization helps the community. I volunteered for the first time yesterday at GPG and it was so amazing and uplifting to see so many amazing things happening for animals that are homeless. We toured the facility which is an old school building. 54,000 square feet houses veterinarian offices and a clinic, comfy rooms for pups and cats, meeting rooms, storage rooms, and play areas... tons and tons of accommodations to make their mission possible. The organization offers everything from a massive large save rate, medical treatment, spay/ neuter services, microchipping, vaccinations, grooming, litter/food distribution, pet ID tag distribution, fostering, and trap-neuter-return services. As a volunteer, there were so many options for me to choose from to help out! Naturally, I choose dog walking. We walked a sweet and VERY strong pup named Checo. Check the pics for his big smiles :) A part of the group I was with helped out by filling and making Kongs, worked with the cats, and did laundry. This organization really values volunteers, they ultimately saved $335,500 last year with volunteer service. This was made possible from nearly 12,500 volunteers. It is such a valuable place to the community and I am looking forward to going back to see some more furry pals! :) read more

I understand the owner's vision and mission when they decided to establish this place, however, the huge downside are the people they hired and put in place to lead and direct this rescue. Smh. It could be such a better place if there were people "in charge" that were humble, down to earth and kind to ALL staff members, volunteers, etc., but sadly that's not the case here. If you aren't witnessing "clique" behaviors from higher ups, you're either witnessing staff lie on you or simply talk rudely to you with little to no respect or you're witnessing "leaders" cover up other's no good actions. So many good things to focus on here, but sadly it's difficult when you have certain people in charge that don't care at all about certain behaviors or treating everyone fairly. It's definitely not "what you know, but who you know" in this place, LOL. The owners could really benefit a lot more if they hired people with respectful attitudes who were fair and treated EVERYONE with decency. Hope the owners consider re-evaluating who they appoint in certain leadership, director and staff choices here because it is much needed! The fur babies here are wonderful, and I hope every single one of them sees a new life outside those walls. read more

Yes, as long as you have time to sit in a 4 hour line in the middle of summer. That is a car line by the way. MY cat vacated in the car in its cage but the smell was horrendous. So I put his cage outside the car away from direct sun and gave him plenty of water. They chastised me for doing this. The cage by the way had plenty of holes for air flow. And I was right there. If I thought he was distressed I would have put him back in the car regardless!!! I was 10 feet away watching him so he did not get to overheated. As we moved down the line of cars I would get out and move his cage. That was about every 5-10 minutes. Made me feel awful . Even though I had saved him in O'Fallon Illinois walking in and out of traffic five years prior at less than 1 lb. If I had opened the cage to clean the mess he may (would) have gotten away, we were right by Interstate 64. Took visitor now (Buddy) to Humane Society 2 year old that showed up at my door healthy and just wanting attention in october 24 . HE did not really want in the house. Although we offered repeatedly. Much better experience through the Humane society and I was worried because it is getting cold and he did not really want to come in just to be petted. The humane society had the perfect solution. We live in the country now so it is not as important for things to look perfect! Anyway they gave me a homemade house built out of ice chests and held together by yeah duct tape, and covered with plastic. And then I went and bought straw as suggested by them. He used it but after a little while decided he liked it better indoors. 12/20/2024 yeah now he is a indoor/outside cat and very healthy. read more

It isn't easy seeing injured, abused, abandoned dogs and cats , they are so defenceless and have had such hard lives. The wonderful staff and drs and volunteers and foster parents at this adoption clinic dedicate their time and attention to healing these animals , nursing them through their injuries and ailments so that they can be fostered and adopted. My sweet wire Fox terrier was found with 7 puppies under a bush, she had ring worm, heartworm ( which killed her sister at the time of admission) and an eye seeping with green puss, fly strike wounds have scarred her ears, and she had been forced to live outside and fend for herself and her puppies. Rehabbing dogs and cats is a slow process , it takes medical knowledge, kindness, patience . Animals need time to heal and time to learn to trust humans again. I am so happy I have Tallulah (Moonlight) , she is still undergoing her medical recovery process but she has the biggest heart to forgive the neglect she's endured and accept the love and care I give her. Without the Gateway Guardians she and her puppies would most probably have died under a bush without anyone around to help... thank you for all you do They say a dog is a man's best friend , she is mine!!! read more

You might recognize me as the "2017 PetCo Foundation Grants" winner that brought GPG $20,000 last year. So why the "1 star" rating? Well.. GPG has some really amazing volunteers and very very deserving dogs, unfortunately no organization can flourish if toxic catty behavior is encouraged from the top down on their volunteers, for example; I learned months prior to my departure, "leadership" had said I was "too white privileged to ever fit in at GPG" and mocked the car I drive. (note: when I say "leadership", I mean a small, small clicky group that enjoys creating drama and talking behind volunteers backs.) After months of trying to convince myself that it would get better, "leadership" called me and "terminated my volunteering because they felt I resented GPG too much after Cora's death" and encouraged me to find a rescue that I would be happier with. I never blamed GPG for the untimely passing of Cora, but their decision to name a dog Kora less than a month after her passing was extremely insensitive. Also when given the opportunity from PetCo to discuss the grant on the local news, they "didn't have time" to mention her. I hope this helps provide transparency to future potential volunteers and donors. I really wish for the sake of the dogs that this organization can salvaged. The dogs deserve an organization that their leaders aren't driving off volunteers. read more

I adopted my first dog from GPG and they were so thorough in checking out my family and home before approving the adoption, which I really appreciate. The fosters really care about the animals and it really is a community. The events are also amazing, so if you get a chance you must attend one! I am very disappointed in my experience with Gateway Pet Guardians. After having such a wonderful adoption process with my own dog from Austin Pets Alive where I live in Austin, TX, I decided I would surprise my dad with a dog for Christmas. Because my parents live in Illinois, I sought out suitable dogs in the area. I found what I thought would be a great match that was being fostered by Gateway Pet Guardians. When I came back to Illinois for the holidays, my husband and I drove the 70 miles from my town to the foster parent's house in St. Louis. We specifically asked if there were any health issues and were told the dog had a clean bill of health. When we asked what the next steps would be, we were told to fill out an application and then a house visit, etc. There was no mention of any other people interested in the dog. Three days later, my dad filled out the application and sent it in, and he and I again traveled the 70 miles for him to meet the dog. The foster parent again, did not mention any other applicants and told us she would check his references and then come out for a house visit. That evening, my dad received an email thanking him for his application. After a week went by with no response, he emailed the organization again to inquire about the progression of the application process. This time he was told they had never received the application. He reminded them of the confirmation email. They then said it was up to the foster parent to contact him. Two days went by again with no word and when he emailed again, the respondent seemed shocked the foster parent hadn't contacted him yet. By this time it was obvious there is a serious communication deficiency within this organization. My dad then called the foster parent and left a message. A day later, she finally called back and said that she had never received his application, there were 5 people in front of him wanting the same dog, and the dog was deathly ill anyway and in the hospital and not going anywhere for a while. I will now mention that this foster parent also runs the organization. She can also not be reached by any type of electronic correspondence as she does not have access to it. To have the audacity to think you can run an organization in 2013 without internet access is simply idiotic and out of touch. The professionalism and organization of Gateway Pet Guardians is elementary at best. It pains me to think that the same people my dad and I dealt with this past month hold the future of these sweet animals. Unfortunately, simply enjoying dogs does not give you qualifications to run an organization. My suggestion is to enlist the help of someone with even a morsel of business knowledge. I do hope that anyone looking to adopt a pet in the St. Louis area will read this and think twice about going through Gateway Pet Guardian. read more

We need help we got a doggie from Stray Dog rescue 6 years ago. As of today we are DISPLACED and don't know how we are going to care for him while we look for a new place to stay! I have tried to contact them prior to the eviction they never called me back! We don't want to have to put him in the shelter for dogs but if we have to we will BUT we want to be able to come and get him back like by June 1-pay whatever fees if necessary .
