Got my sweet girl from here about a month ago. She has changed my life completely, I didn't know I could feel happiness like this before. Thank you Five Acres for taking such good care of her. The cats here are very well taken care of, happy and healthy. You can tell the employees here truly do care and love for the animals like they're their own. We came in "just to look" and walked away with our baby within 45 minutes. The adoption process is very smooth, and I love how you're able to interact with all of the cats to meet them before making your decision. Such a wonderful place. read more

Since moving here, I've been hoping to find an organization to volunteer with. I decided to come here and check it out. I was impressed by the cleanliness and overall health of the animals. The cat house is amazing, and I loved how many cats were able to free roam around the offices and large room. So, I decided to start volunteering. In the couple of weeks I've been volunteering, I've been impressed with the staff. They work so hard and are so helpful to anyone who comes in. They genuinely care about the work they do and every single fur ball they meet. The place is so clean without having that whole medicinal and cold vibe you see in some shelters. The cats are generally happy and have all sorts of enrichment opportunities at their disposal. Five Acres also does a ton of services for the community. There's an entire area and staff dedicated solely to helping pet owners in need. That's awesome for anyone struggling to get back on their feet. read more

I've tried to bite my tongue because I know at the end of the day these people are trying to do a good deed, but I've had two completely awful costumer service issues and I just can't wrap my head around them. We were interested in meeting a dog. Set up a time and arrived at the facility. His trainer immediately looked at me and said that the dog wouldn't like me because I have blonde hair (which I don't, I'm brunette so I don't really know where that came from). I was already turned off because of this and felt as if I shouldn't even meet him. When we get out to the yard, the handler refuses to let the dog off his leash because he's "too much". This obviously raised concerns and we started asking about behavioral issues and they told us that he was fine but "the environment is not". We just got bad vibes that they were wanting him gone (they mentioned about 10 times how no one wanted to adopt him), so they were telling us anything we needed to hear. We ultimately decided that he wasn't for us and continued our search. We found another dog that we were interested so I headed up there after work to see if I could meet her. The worker immediately huffed and said "well she has a lot of interest and I currently have someone driving over 2 hours to meet her". I asked if this meant she's unavailable and she said "well you can meet her because we can't technically hold dogs but she has a lot of applications ". I asked her to just be straight forward because I didn't want to meet the dog and fall in love and then not be able to take her home, and she interrupted me and said "well no one is taking her home because she has to be sprayed. After that we'll pick the best home". Again, just making me feel like my interest doesn't matter because someone drove more miles than I did. This is now twice where I've felt like I'm not wanted at the facility. I understand if I am not a good fit for the dog, I don't want the dog to be put in that situation either, but to make me feel like I'm doing everything wrong and that I'm such a burden for trying to save an animal and give it a home makes me feel terrible. I don't know what else to do. read more

Five Acres sold me a cat that bites and when I put in a surrender application because of the biting the director left me a voice mail after two weeks saying they cannot take back a cat that bites because then they can't adopt them out. Where do they think I got him from?? And they told me that they didn't get him from the streets like his bio said, but they got him from a different shelter. And then recently when I brought it up to them they told me to fill out a new application and just don't put that he bites on it. I'm not lying just so Five Acres can adopt a biting cat out to another family without telling them he bites. read more

My son and I recently adopted a kitten from this shelter. Their kitten room is amazing. The room has a viewing deck (enclosed) for them that is light and airy. The kitten room, as well as the rest of the free roaming feline facility is spotless, and smells fresh. There were plenty of stimulants for the kitties; i.e, toys, crackly paper, cardboard boxes. They were loving it. The also have a cat patio for the felines! Staff & Volunteers: Everyone was very nice. They let us interact with the felines without hovering. But were helpful and friendly with any questions we had. We applied for a kitten and when the adoption day arrived they helped us with our new kitty send home. Even providing some send home food for her. Overall - 5 Stars.....onlu because I can't give their establishment more. Kudos! read more

As noted by others this is a very nice facility. Cleanest I've seen. The animals all seem very well looked after and healthy. Service is a totally different thing though. To start, they don't answer the phone. Ever. During this golden age of wireless communication nobody there can be bothered to carry a phone with them? When we told our in-laws we had gone to Five-Acres my father-in-law immediately told us he's never gone because he can't get anyone to pick up the phone. We adopted a cat from them but there were unusual things about how they handled it. I've never adopted a cat who wasn't already fixed before and had questions and concerns. They told us they would not hold him for us until his surgery came through even though we saw a couple of adopted cats with signs stating that they were waiting to go home with someone. So they were clearly holding some cats for somebody, but would not for us. They assured us that this cat was unlikely to spray or mark since he hadn't in the shelter - he should be fine until he could get in for surgery. Here's an idea I've seen used many other places: don't offer cats for adoption until after they're fixed. Regardless, we liked the cat and he was very friendly and easy in the shelter so we adopted him. Once we got our new guy home several problems arose. He immediately sprayed marking several spots - not the end of the world, but not great, and counter to what they told us about this cat. Secondly he is an unpredictable biter. I've had cats all my life and I know the difference between a playful warning, an over-stimulated nip, and an outright break-the-skin bite. This cat has been showing escalating aggression toward me and seems generally nervous anytime I move my hands. He also shows no trigger signs. He has all his claws (as he should) but what will happen when we need to trim them? Cat bites can come with serious health hazards. It's entirely possible this guy is just a bad fit. But this takes us back to point number one: they won't answer their phone to talk us through what our options are. We finally got a call back after leaving a message and they told us to come in to talk to Nicky and she would talk us through some things we might try. We felt like maybe we were getting somewhere. They told my wife to meet them at 11:00 am. We showed up and spoke to two different people about our pre-arranged meeting with Nicky. Some volunteers arrived while we were waiting and got immediately seen while we continued to wait. Nicky finally spoke to my wife after we had stood there waiting for 25 minutes. The information shared was not more insightful than a quick google search returned. We're not people who quit on our animals although I'm reaching my limits and this experience has me thinking I will go elsewhere in the future. The nice facilities aside I've had way better experiences with Petsmart than this. Save yourself the hassle. Find somewhere where they care equally for the adopters as they do for the adoptees. Bottom line: they care about the animals maybe not so much about you. read more

Five Acres was the only local place willing to take in a stray cat that I had been caring for. After taking her in and keeping her separated from my other cats, I found out she was FELV+ and I could not keep her anymore because of the risk of infecting my other cats. Five Acres has a whole floor dedicated to these Leukemia positive cats where they get to have the freedom of healthy cats and roam around together. Hats off to Five Acres for taking these cancer kitties and giving them the best time they have left! read more

This place is a big no. It certainly is a nice environment on the outside and customer area and, to be fair, maybe other people think the way they conduct themselves is beneficial. But for someone who has adopted from shelters in the past, again a big no. Here's what you need to know - you cannot see the animals unless you want to meet each one individually under their supervision. This is ridiculous. As you can read from some of the other reviews, you cannot see how a dog acts with other dogs around it, or even if the dog looks like what they present online. Also, half the dogs are in foster care but they do not present that information anywhere on their website. So make sure you call in advance before stopping by. They are not the only ones to do this but it is a deceptive practice. So I stop by after work b/c we are looking for a shelter dog and, even though living in OH, drive back and forth and would bring a dog home no problem. I am shown a 5th graders' binder with pictures. As the woman pets the pages, she explains the front pages (half or more) are in foster care and not available. And then explains that the only way to see a dog is pick one and sit in with third party. That is crap. Last week, I stopped by another shelter b/c there were dogs of interest and one of them went ballistic when someone else walked in front of its cage. It was fine with me but that scared the crap out of me. Dollars to donuts that pup would have been fine in the room. Also, what a waste of time. You know if you bond with an animal fairly quickly. So you send the volunteer back and back and back. I am sure this works for a lot of people b/c they are still there and seemingly proud of this nonsense. But just be aware of what you will be getting if you walk in. read more

Nice facility. One of the nicer ones we've seen. Seemed friendly enough but not helpful finding us a cat. They seemed more interested in talking to each other and couldn't give us any advice on a good match. My biggest issue with them is they way they want to adopt out cats. Kittens must be in pairs. If you own an older cat, you can't adopt 1 kitten. (They say because an older cat would find a young one annoying---that's not true in all cases but whatever). Most of their older cats are bonded (supposedly) and must be adopted together. So, you see the pattern here... Only cats in twos. We've owned cats all our lives and understand them. Age of an animal doesn't dictate a good match, it's the personality. I understand bonded pairs and only saw 2 sets of truly bonded pairs. The rest were not. I'm not saying they don't do good work but they need to stop this strange practice. read more

I rescued my dog from here. They are great and really try to find homes for as many pups as possible! I will always rescue from here on out. There are so many... and I wish I could rescue more :) I also bought a whole bunch of useful things for my dog from their little store. And purchased a used crate for $25. Very cheap! My daughter picked out a cat and we filled out an application and were told everything looked fine. They just needed to call the vet about our current pets. A couple days later, we got a call back and were denied because we already have an indoor/outdoor cat. She had asked if the new cat would go outside and I answered honestly that I would prefer she only stays inside but would be fine if she went out. She said they do not allow adoptions for cats who might go outside. I understand that. What I don't understand is why it did not come up when we were there. My daughter was looking forward to getting the cat for the last couple of days. I feel this disappointment could have been avoided if they had been upfront with us. I don't fault the people we met with because I am not really sure if 'inside cat only' is part of the shelter's official policy or if it's someone's personal stance. The administrator that denied us was not there when we visited. I usually don't leave reviews but wanted to share our experience. I like that this is a no kill shelter and most of the people were nice, but I recommend asking to speak to the actual person who will approve or deny your application during your visit. If she is not there, do not pick out a cat and fill out the application. Do not get your hopes up for nothing. Hopefully this review will help save some other child from crying with disappointment like mine did. read more

Do NOT even bother with this place! Horrible! Applied for a dog, they told me I was the first person to put an application and meet her. Was trying to set up a meet and greet with my other dog and they said I needed to wait for my application to be processed and approved. (Let alone they have already contacted my references and the vet check was up to date. Also a lady that was adopting a sister of the dog put in an application the same time I did and she was taking the dog home the first day). I called daily to check on the dog and they kept telling me my application was still processing but dog was still there. Called after my applications was over a week old and asked again for status of the application, they said still processing because July 4th holiday call back after. I asked if dog was even still there and she came back and let me know the dog left the first day she was there. (Same day I met the dog) Waste of time! read more

Totally sad and disappointed over my attempt to adopt from 5 Acres. Put in an application for an adorable beagle and was approved. They were excited because I currently have a beagle-mix and felt I was a good candidate. Scheduled a Meet & Greet with my dog. Received a call the morning of to confirm and the time was wrong. Re-established the time and showed up. Wasn't able to meet the dog because he had kennel cough and the conscientious worker on duty wasn't going to expose my dog. Disappointing but being careful and putting the health and safety of all animals first seems like the right thing to do. Received a call (actually like 4-5 calls) two days later to schedule the Meet & Greet and "Take Home". Well, 5 days on antibiotics isn't long enough to prevent contagion and I'm not going to agree to being the dog home until I've had a chance to meet him. Asked to schedule a meet and greet after at least 7-10 days of antibiotics. I'm aware that you are lucky if you are able to adopt a dog from a shelter that didn't contract kennel cough. But why give it to my dog and he is miserable and sick when I attempt to bring a sibling into the family? Was told that they couldn't hold the dog for this reason because of so many other applicants. I hope he goes to a good home. I'm saddened that 5 acres didn't exercise better communication and caution. I was really looking forward to adding to my fur-family. read more

First off I love the fact that this is a no kill shelter. I've perused the pups on several occasions, donated supplies and I do like the fact that the staff knows the dogs personalities very well. I'm currently looking for a furry friend so on my recent visit inquired about a few. The young man who helped us was very nice. My only complaint is that some alone time with the dogs would help a potential owner and the dog see if they are a good match. The young man came in the room, sat on the floor and played with the dog. That's great but give us a chance to see if the dog would interact with us (which they didn't) because the guy who feeds, pets, plays and takes him outside every day is his buddy. Oh well. I didn't find my dog and I wouldn't poo poo this place but maybe request some alone time next time. read more

I was looking for a kitten to adopt. As the veterinarian assistant I am, I was looking for a kitten that I could get spayed at my work. When I went in to meet the kitten I put an adoption in for, I was told by the worker that I could do that. When I went to pick her up and pay for her, they had me run my card and pay for her before they went over any of the adoption things with her. Nicki, the feline manager, strictly told me I couldn't spay her at my work even though getting her vaccines at my work was okay. I was told this after I already paid the adoption fee that is non-refundable. The day after I picked up my sunshine I took her to my vet, and she had one of the worst ear infections. They ignored my calls and I had to pay for her medication and they dont reimburse you for any medication you buy even though I was told Five Acres was still financially responsible for her. I tried to contact Nicki over and over again about rescheduling her spay because I had to work that day, and she never called back until after I missed the appointment to explain that she would be charging me $50 for missing it and $50 each week she doesn't hear back from me. Due to my busy scheduling spaying her at my work would be the most convenient for everyone. When I asked Nicki about why I couldn't spay her at my work, she said that she doesnt want to keep track of all the cats getting spayed at different locations. She said that was too much for her to do. Instead she would rather wait an extra month to get her spayed instead of me being able to do it the next day I work. She even went as far as telling me to request off from work to drop her off. I am literally working in a veterinarian clinic and work as a nurse for pets getting spayed. My job is not something you can just request off. As a person working with animals, you would think nicki would understand that. I will never adopt a cat from this place again and if you are looking to do so please go somewhere else. This isn't worth all the rude remarks and condescending attitude you will get from the manager. As well as all the lying she tells you. She explained she called my work to get ahold of me but not once did we recieve a call from her and i tried contacting her for a month and she never responded to my calls until I called the reception desk and they forced her to call me. She also explained to me that I signed a foster to adopt form but I never did any such thing. When I told her I didn't, she said it was what I signed on my phone. However, the thing I signed on my phone was the receipt not the foster to adopt form. When I said that I signed the recipient, she got quiet and changed the subject. So they gave me their pet without me signing any forms for anything. For a place that is supposed to care about their animals why would they just give you their pet without having you sign a contract saying you will bring them back for their spay? Or a contract saying you wont neglect them while they are in your care? I would never relinquish a pet to them. Even if they state to be a no-kill shelter, I still would never trust any of my cats to their care. I have had no experiences on the dog side of things. Ive heard very good things about the dog side of the shelter. It is just unfortunate that the cat side of things is completely unprofessional and rude towards veterinarian assistants. They dont care about the people they send their pets home with and they dont care about the pets they have there either. read more

If you decide to adopt from this shelter I would highly suggest reviewing all records they have on file. I love my dog but it would have been nice to know ahead of time that she is allergic to grass and has anxiety. When we contacted the shelter regarding this and a couple other issues all they were concerned about was if we were going to bring her back, then they had their "lawyer" call and harrass us. Not cool and very uncalled for. Its sad that they say anything to get these animals out and dont really care about the actual animal. read more

The facility itself is good and clean, the real issues is with the people in charge and the digital footprint they leave. Though I have never entered the building where they keep the dog (because you need an appointment and with the cats you can just walk in.) They keep their cats well taken care of so I can understand why they would want to check with your vet before you are given the green light to adopt a cat. What I don't understand is why other house household have to have nurtured or spayed animals. With my situation, they said we couldn't adopt because one of our dogs weren't spayed, and just so we're clear the cat we were trying to adopt was also female. I would also like to add that our female dog was spayed anyway and the facts weren't straight. Another reason they declined our adoption attempt was being one of our dogs "wasn't up to date" on his shots. This dog in question has been deceased long before our application was put it. Because of these mistakes the cat we wanted to adopt was taken but someone else. This is not my main issue though, I can understand the confusing and have moved on. My real frustration lies on the fact that the adult in charge of shifting through the application never answers the phone. I can't tell you how many times i've called, but I can tell you it's well over 20 over the span of two weeks. I would also like to add that I never just call at one time. I call at a variation of times and didn't days, still no answer. I would be great if they could improve their communication between customers and the cat adoption staff. read more

While there was some paper work issues between our new pup and her sister that were resolved, I could not rate this place less than 5 because they gave us the opportunity to adopt an amazing pup into our family. Listen, I really wanted to give them a good review. However, I can't. I went there this past weekend looking for a cat. I found one that I fell in love with and I put an application in on him. Found out that because I was considering getting him declawed that the lady who was in charge of cat adoptions felt it would be in my best interest if I didn't get him. She was also a bit rude and condescending when I even suggested declawing, making me feel like a bad pet owner. I have had cats my whole life, and I know I could've given this boy a good home. I'm glad that the cats have a nice facility to live in, but I also feel that you cannot be that overprotective and that picky when trying to find forever homes. read more

I was very impressed with the care of the available animals for adoption, this was the first place I've seen locally that allowed the newly available kittens to actually roam free and play, their not locked in a tiny cage and only allowed to be viewed in a small room one at a time. For me this is not only very meaningful but shows a lot about how they cared for and respected for the other animals. The kittens are introduced to not only people, children, but other cats as well. they are given shots, neutered, spayed, their so much I could say over all I was very, very impressed and will be recommending them for anyone looking for a family addition. read more

We just had a horrible experience with this shelter and we would never recommend it to anyone. The charming name and outward appearance of the building may convince you to overlook the bottom line. We were utterly deceived from the first moment we entered the building. After spending a full hour in the cat room on the second floor, we approached staff on the first floor, who instead of answering our questions, told us to go to their website. Although I had scoured the website, you can imagine my surprise to hear from Nikki, who declined our application because we would declaw. That information had never been stated on the website, and if it had, we would never have visited. Secondly, the cats we liked were advertised as brothers. When questioned by Nikki, we were told they were both strays, and had not been surrendered together. I am a fundraiser by profession and had thought I might volunteer my services if I was impressed by the service. That will never happen. I look upon this experience as a real eye opener. Trick and Treat, the cats we loved, just lost the opportunity for a wonderful forever home. As loving cat owners throughout our 45 years of marriage, Nikki insulted me and the vet who has cared for my fur babies. I strongly urge you to look elsewhere for your pets. No stars, but I must give one for this to be posted. That doesn't change my rating from ZERO. read more

Living in west county, I was not familiar with this no-kill shelter in St. Charles until someone told me about it. It's a little off the beaten path but, really, very easy to get to once you know it's there. Walking in, you immediately notice how clean it is and how friendly the staff and volunteers are. They walk you through the shelter where you can see how well their animals are cared for. The dogs have plenty of room to play, inside and out, and lots of toys to keep them busy. The cats also have room to roam and windows to look out. The staff knows a lot about each one and speak of them like family members even though they stay just a short time (hopefully!). When I'm ready to adopt again, I'll head to Five Acres! read more

I applaud no kill shelters. Having said that, they shouldn't guild the lily when adopting out dogs. I was told the dog was "chill" and four years old. Meet and greet went went fine. Got the papers on adoption day and the dog is really barely 1 year old. He also leaps our four foot fence like a gazelle and now I either have to spend thousands of dollars replacing the fence or always put him on a lead. He is always digging in the trash so we had to buy all new waste cans with locking lids after he dragged trash all over the house. We have been working on training but when he's loose he still won't come when called. My point is people will not recommend you if you LIE about the animals you are adopting out. read more

I fell in love with an 8 mth old puppy last weekend. When I was seeing the dog the young girl that worked there told me that I could Foster the pet for a week to see how it got along with my other pets and then adopt the dog from there. On the application for the dog, I wrote that I was interested in fostering to see how the dogs would do and then adopting this dog. The young girl that was helping me there said that she would turn my application into her boss and I would get a call by mid week, which did not happen. I went on their website today to see if the dog was still there since I had not received a call, and the dog had been adopted. I talk to the manager Ariel who made up multiple excuses as to why she was unable to call me and said that she had not really looked at my application send she put it in a folder after seeing the word foster on it. Ariel blamed the reason why she didn't call me on the fact that they have a lot of business going on there and they can't keep up. Ariel kept trying to tell me about possible options for fostering a dog and I had to tell her multiple times that I was NOT wanting to foster and was wanting to give a dog a permanent home. Ariel said another person became interested in the dog and wanted to give it a permanent home so that's why she let them adopt it after I clearly wrote I wanted to ADOPT. It's a good thing I didn't have kids with me or else they would be heart broken over this. Ariel, did not care about what they had done, did not try to fix it in any way just made more excuses. I will NEVER adopt another pet from them or give them any ounce of money EVER again because of this! I will make sure to tell others of this heart breaking and aggravating experience. read more
