Best Haunted House on LI- yep you heard it from the Ghoul herself. A full 30-35 minute labyrinth full of twists and turns that take you away from time and space. Each room is full curated with an immense amount of fantastic scare actors and amazing mechanical props. Some of the lighting I can't even explain, the, "swamp" room was a total first for me and completely amazing. You'll know it when you see it. As you wander in and out you'll be confused at where you are and what comes next. All of your senses, even smell, will be inundated as you are transported to a horror frenzy. There's a scare at every turn! The make up dazzles and the actors are fully committed. In the market area you'll meet the ringmaster whose hilarious schtick will leave you in stitches. Food is well priced and there's a bar. Also a coffin ride not for the faint of heart. There's so much that id suggest going another night to really see it all. Fantastic time, about 35 minutes to walk through. Huge animatronics everywhere, which is a big plus, and scare actors galore. While an animatronic is jumping out at you, an actor gets you from the other side! The disgusting smell ( in a few rooms), done intentionally, made me gag. Very pungent! Lol The body bags were quite heavy, hard to get through, had to go sideways. Quite scary! I have loved this haunted house for years. Being that it is put on by performers and a theater company makes it so much better! The sets are so craftfully designed and the visuals and animatronics are incredible. The actors are also so spooky! No one touches you and they make sure you have the best experience by trying to keep different groups from being on top of each other inside. I also had to tie my shoe in a dark room and one of them helped me with a flashlight. Thank you! The queue is virtual which is amazing because they have games outside you can play and food, drink, and alcoholic beverages to buy while you wait. And plenty of tables and chairs. I don't recommend this attraction for people with mobility issues as there are LOTS stairs and moving floors which can be dangerous. Can't wait to return next year! read more

We came the first day it was opened in October 2022. If you buy online, it's a few dollars cheaper than buying at the box office. Parking: Plenty of parking spots when we went. Though from what I heard, the parking gets packed the closer it gets to Halloween so you might r have to wait for a spot to open. Midway: The area between the box office and the theater. That is where you can get beverages (hot apple cider is a must) and chicken wings from the food cart. You can get souvenirs here. Get your picture taken on stage or talk to the clown at the information booth. Haunting: Watch the number on the digital display for your number before you enter. It's indoor and outdoor so wear proper footware since you need to go up steps, slanted floor, squeeze through some area. Don't want to give up too much and ruin the fun. Keep your hands to yourself. We went last night and had an amazing time. This is worth the money and the wait. They are very organized and the decorations and the artwork of this haunted house is absolutely spectacular. So much detail and the actors are dedicated and amazingly horrifying. Sooo many jump scares around every corner. Definitely not made for the weak heart. This review is for the Forgotten Road drive thru haunted ride at Southaven Park. So disappointed! Our experience of Gateway has always been top notch. This experience is beyond sub standard for a Gateway product. $60 for drive thru where the scenery was super basic and not scary at all, and barely any actors. So much of it had no people. You drive thru sections that are supposed to be different scenes with corresponding background tracks of music and narrating. But much of it where you could see was set up for actors to be, had none. The scare was not there. Our daughter and 3 friends we apologized to, that it was lame. Very disappointing and not what I've experienced with Gateway productions. For the price, this is not worth it. Perhaps Haunted Playhouse is better. I understand In Covid conditions it's difficult to hire enough people, but this wasn't even nearly half of the people for the scenes on a Saturday evening. read more

I want to preface this review by saying that I have been coming to Gateway's Haunted Playhouse for five years now. I've always thought it was the best haunted house experience in the area, and worth the 40 minute drive in each direction. However, tonight's experience has ended my favorite Halloween tradition. After checking in, my party made its way to the snack bar in the haunted village to wait for our number to be called. Upon arriving, we saw a scare actress leaned against the bar looking bored and like she wanted to be anywhere else on the entire planet. She was very tall, and was wearing a bonnet and had a face mask on. There were two other groups sitting at tables that she didn't even attempt to interact with, but we made the mistake of sitting at the table next to her. She immediately came to us, and blew her air horn directly into my friends ear. My friend responded by saying "ow, that really hurt, can you please not do that again." The actress immediately fired off the air horn right back into the same ear. My friend reiterated that the horn was too close to her ear, and she was hurting her. My friend asked her two more times to please not do that again. No one in our group was scared, no one was screaming or egging her on. We weren't engaged with this actress in the slightest, and gave her no reason to keep shooting her air horn directly into my friends ear. She could have walked away and engaged any other group of people sitting there. Instead, the actress chose to put her horn against my friends ear for the third time, so my friend gently pushed the air horn away from her ear. The scare actress immediately got inches away from my friends face and yelled "don't fucking touch me. You do that in the house, you go home." My friend immediately put her hands up and apologized, despite the fact that the scare actress was the aggressor in this situation. The actress immediately ran to security and told them her version of what had happened. For the next 20 minutes two security guards stood five feet from our group staring at us like we were a problem. After being made to feel unwelcome, we asked the security guards if there was an issue. They told us that the actress told them that we had full on pushed her, and reiterated that if we touched any actors we would be escorted from the premises. They told my 5'2" friend that she looked "aggressive," and that they'd be watching us on the cameras the whole time. When we tried to explain our side of what had happened, the security guard named Gary kept interrupting us, had no interest in hearing what we had to say, and kept telling us that that's what we should expect at a haunted house, and that "if we can't handle it, we should just get a refund." He was yelling at us, and trying to belittle us. When I asked him why he was talking to us like that, his response was "I'm just telling you how it is." As I've said earlier in this review, I've been a loyal customer for the past 5 years. I've been frequenting haunted house experiences for the past 20 years. Never not once has an actor ever tried to fire an air horn directly into my ear three times in a row, and I've absolutely never been cursed at. That's not "how it is", and no matter how loudly Gary raised his voice, he was still wrong. Your actor crossed a line, and your security team was trying to make us feel like we were the issue here. The second security guard seemed to be understanding of where we were coming from, and said that he'd talk to both Gary and the scare actress in question, and admitted they were both in the wrong. It was too late though, and the experience was ruined for our party. We got a refund, and left immediately. With how much money the experience costs, we weren't paying to be disrespected by an actor and security guard on a power trip. I hate to give up a tradition, but we won't be back. read more

Gateway's Haunted Playhouse is epic! If you're going to go to any Halloween event on Long Island make this THE one. I've been coming to this haunted event for the past 3 years and I have to say that it just keeps getting better and better each year. This is a top notch production with tons of live interactive scares going on. Don't worry the actors can't touch you physically, but the know how to scare the Hell out of you! This is not your typical community "firehouse" doubling as a haunted house. This is an elaborately constructed journey that takes you upstairs, downstairs, outside, in elevators, and other dimensions - seriously there is a vortex room that sincerely screws with your head. The entire experience takes about a half an hour to get through providing you don't get held up along the way. After you pay or check in (you can purchase tickets on-line), there is a short to moderate waiting period until your number is up! (approx 20-30 minutes). No worries though there is a ghostly bar serving up pumpkin ale and a variety of wines, soft drinks, and light snacks while you're waiting. There are plenty of ghouls and goblins patrolling the area to offer up some jolting entertainment as well. Plenty of photo ops. This year they've added some new attractions like the coffin ride (you actually get in a closed coffin which jumps all over the place), and the Haunted Shooting Gallery. All this along with a few flame swallowers, fortune tellers, and stilt walkers makes for a really fun night out around Halloween time. There is a less "haunted" version for kids during the day. I'm not sure if I qualify as a haunted house aficionado, but I've been to many over the years and some of the best ones in the Northeast! The Gateway Haunted Playhouse was fantastic!! Firstly, it is local so you don't have to travel far. The carnival vibe is pretty cool! The staff are amazing, the actors are convincingly terrorizing & the whole set up is quite involved! It's awesome that you can come out & make a night of it, with the food truck and snack bar! We definitely got our steps in, as you have to traverse several staircases, etc. Definitely not for the faint hearted, but we loved it!! Absolutely worth the trip!! read more

I have been to gateways haunted playhouse I think at least 6 times!! I keep returning every year because I consistently have a great time. I am always amazed by how elaborate the haunt is... you go through at least 20 different themed rooms/areas. You will walk out of there with your cheeks hurting from screaming/laughing/ smiling so much. They also do a really good job of spacing the groups out so that you remain with your party and don't see too much of the group before you or after you. For me it is the perfect mix of terrifying/cool/fun that keeps me coming back every year! Also stop reading now for a slight spoiler but I want to give a shoutout to the school bus kids... walking through that portion is always terrible hahah so I guess they are doing a great job! Used to be a tradition to come every year but this year will unfortunately be the first year we do not come. Save your money and check out Schmidt's Farm, such a better option and cheaper! I usually make this my go to house, makes my adrenaline pumping and im sweating...but this year was extremely disappointing! I went tonight (fri 10/18). The whole first half is little kids just standing around grunting in your face. No scares, no attempts. It did get better the second half and a few scares got me, but was it worth $30 this year? Weekends have a lot of people, try one of their conveniently open weeknights. This is actually a big Theater converted into a labyrinth of horror and fun. Bring the family. Also days they have the Not So Scary Haunt for the little ones. While there say Hello to Captain Blood in the Arcade's Midway Area! He's hysterical. Peek-a-boo!!! I promise you won't hear that unless it's coming from the undead and followed by a scream. This was the first haunted house I've ever visited; it was my best experience so far. It might be as big as Bayville, but I guarantee that it makes up for it with frights! It has all the bells and whistles of the usual haunted house, topped off by amazing actors that will get in your face and lock eyes till you're the first to blink. The scenes are well decorated, there's blood and body parts everywhere! Many "haunted house" elements are amplified here, expect the unexpected. The location is very organized. There are two large parking lots, one on the side of the "Haunted Playhouse" and one behind it. I suggest parking in the one in the back, it adds a bit of fright walking through the dark dirt road toward the entrance. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door, sometimes there's a promo discount when buying your ticket online. When entering the actual attraction, let the security know how many people are in your group. They will call your number and you can head right in. While you wait, have a little fun. Check out the haunted items laid around, read some spooky articles or head over to the bar for a deadly drink. Just watch out...there are undead and masked men strolling the yards before you even enter. "It's close to midnight, and something evil's lurking in the dark. Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart." Ahh! read more

Not everyone likes to be scared (my girlfriend is one of these people). For me, my favorite time of the year is around Halloween so I eat up any opportunity to go to a haunted house attraction. This past Sunday marked my first experience at Gateway's Haunted Playhouse, and after arriving and surviving to tell about it (scare attempt), I will surely return. Read on to hear more, if you dare... *cue the spooky music* Located in Bellport, Gateway Playhouse immerses you in the art of theater, except when ghosts come out and it gets a little...haunted. Having never been here, I didn't know what to expect from the set up. I did my research and bought my group tickets in advance ($25 online instead of $30 at the door). Parking was decent with staff directing traffic. Initially, you walk in to a front building to have your ticket scanned and a card attached to it. This card has a number on it that corresponds to when you'll be called to enter the haunted playhouse. The question is, what happens in the meantime? Well, this is where things get pretty darn awesome. Unlike most (or all) haunted attractions in which you wait on a crazy long line to get up to your turn to enter the attraction, Gateway uses this number calling system (or "Next Victims" as the screen says) to give you the opportunity to hang out in the midway. This is the area between that initial building and the haunted playhouse in which there's a few mini attractions (such as a zombie shooting gallery and a lovely ghoul at "guest services"), a food truck serving fried favorites, and a nice snack bar with hot chocolate and cider as well as wine and beer. Plenty of seating including a 21+ section just in case you need some time away from those teenage horror dans. So, even though it took about an hour for our number to be called, I was totally impressed that we were able to hang out, snack on some nachos and fried Oreos, have a drink (Blue Point Pumpkin Ale!), and take in the fall night. From there, I don't want to give away too much inside the playhouse, but I will say it's relentless with it's spooks. Plenty of actors ready to pounce and often in spots you're just not expecting. Creativity in setup is also great with an outdoor maze, stairs that take you every which way, and a couple of other clever spots you'll end up in. Moving floors, tight spaces, funky smells, loud noises, and complete darkness make for a terrifyingly exciting 25-30 minutes of wonderful scares. Overall, I only went to Gateway a few nights ago, and yet I already want to go back to experience this ghastly good time again. The set up was casual and relaxing making for a great night with friends (and one spooked girlfriend!). So if you like to be scared and want a night of frightening fun, I highly recommend this house of haunts. read more

Not the best haunted house I've been to but definitely not the worst. I thought it was a bit pricey for only having one attraction but all in all I had a good time. It took my group about 40 minutes or so to walk through the Playhouse and we were walking pretty fast. We had been broken up into two groups but it didn't take the second group long to catch up to us. I purchased 10 tickets, all with speed passes and I opted to pick up my tickets at the Playhouse and still had to wait on a long line for over 30 minutes. Our tickets were from 9pm/9:30pm and when we finished the walk through there wasn't much going on outside. The website states that they have live music and different entertainment but I saw nothing of the sort besides the coffin ride and some zombie shooting game. Oh, and a food truck that was selling chicken strips, fries and fried oreos (which were actually delicious). Staff/actors were respectful and friendly. I wouldn't return but I don't regret going. I really wanted to give this attraction a three and a half stars but since that wasn't an option I had to give them a solid three stars. read more

NOT SO SCARY VERSION So I've got two little kids who've been looking for some Halloween fun without the screams and scares. Yesterday we went to the daytime not so scary version of the Gateway haunted Playhouse. It was a half-hour wait to get into the haunted house itself however we did not spend the time standing on line. Instead, they told us it would be approximately 30 minutes and they would come and call our name. So the wait was spent by my children getting their faces painted by a talented young lady, who was smart enough to have a tablet available, so that when the children came up and asked for random or not so common items she was able to look up pictures and give them what they wanted. They also enjoyed time in the bouncy house and having balloon animals there were other things to do as well but due to a sudden downpour we were unable to partake in some of those events. Can't blame Gateway for the weather LOL. Happily, there was no extra charge for these items other than a dollar tip jar which was completely appropriate so I did not feel like we were in a money trap. Of course the food and snack bar were cash Good to their word, about a half hour later we were called in for the not so scary version of the haunted house, we were led through by a quirky tour guide, the evil ghosts became our friends, and the truly scary or inappropriate items, that obviously are used in the night-time version, were covered up and made to look like common everyday ghosts. The lights were on, the screams were non-existent, and a few ghosts friends we met gave out tokens for candy and Dracula told our kids how to dance to the Monster Mash. My kids were ear to ear the whole time and for $10 a person the price was completely appropriate and worth the money. I would definitely recommend this to any parent looking for something to do with their children and I would like to add that even though the event was not so scary, every room where there was something unique about a hallway or room, such as a squishy floor, ect, we were warned about and given the opportunity to step out if needed. Probably might be a little now for those looking for a good haunt attraction this year but man definitely hope they keep up the great work next year. At first I was a bit skeptical at Gateway's Haunted Playhouse's production value compared to the other bigger and more well known attractions in the tri-state area. However for the $25 admission per person I definitely think it's well worth the visit. Being further out in Suffolk County, it wasn't crowded at all when we visited Saturday night few weeks back. They have a clear and straightforward numbering system and definitely helps to have the big screens with the current numbers to help you reduce the wait time. The attraction themselves are about 40-45 minutes at a good pace but I think you can stretch it out to an hour if you really take your time to go through each room. I have to give the actors a lot of props for being so professional and take their job quite seriously. There were a few rooms that had light strobes that I find more of an annoyance than scary but that's a personal preference and some of the rooms could use more of a mix up in variety. But the actors will do their best to give you the scare you are paying for :) As with other Haunted House attractions they usually begin the season at around mid-late September and it seems they have a preview weekend that is reduced in admission. If you plan to attend I would definitely recommend buying tickets in advance online to save some considerable wait, plenty of posted signs with instructions for directions once you arrive. The parking staff work really hard on directing traffic too they're very well organized. Definitely recommended as one of the better haunted attractions in the tri-state area. Recently came here to see Cats with my mother and sister. I was pleasantly surprised. For what appears to be a barn, this place is nicer and more spacious than many of the theaters that I have been to on Broadway. Located right near the old Bellport Outlets, this theater is pretty far east...but definitely an easier and more pleasant trek than heading into the city (if you have a car). Once we arrived, we were quickly able to find our seats. You'll be happy and comforted to know that the chairs are a lot bigger than the ones on Broadway as well. However the bathroom line moves just as slow... Definitely seems to cater towards an older crowd, but they put on a wide array of shows, so I am sure everyone can find something to enjoy. This theater is truly a hidden treasure of Long Island! The concessions were also pretty affordable and they serve soda in glass bottles, which I thought was a cute touch. The parking situation is a bit hectic, so I would park on the street next to the theater...This will make it easier for you to beat parking lot traffic on the way out. read more

Another year in the books, we had a wonderful time going through their haunted house. We started our time in a midway area with drinks, coffin ride, gift shop, heckler and shooting gallery. It made the short wait go by even quicker. We then entered a quick line where we were given rules then entered a room where the experience truly began. We waited for only a few minutes in the room while each group was let in. Then entered the haunt, throughout the experience we encountered many actors, props, scenes, things popping out at us, strobes, low lights, fog, inside areas and outside, different textures to walk on as well as scents. If I could give this ZERO STARS. I would. AWFUL. TERRIBLE! NOT SCARY! SECURITY FOLLOWS YOU AROUND! NOT #1 BY ANY MEANS!! . The only highlight of my night was the people who worked in the food truck because they were so nice. (We are 3 young women 37, 33, 28) So our night started when we got in line and there was a guy who just had spit drooling out of his mouth, specifically his bottom lip. The spit landed on our clothes because he was THAT close to us. We walked away and he still pursued us! So we put a hand up for him to back off and that just didn't happen. I took my ticket out of my pocket, and caught the spit that was about to drip on me again in mid air and put it back in his pocket without touching the man. Come on that's just gross! Spit is a bodily fluid and we had no interest in coming in contact with him. That's a health violation. Security disliked that and said they were worried that us WOMEN would harm the scarers. We had no intention of hurting anyone or bringing harm to anyone. We literally were there to have a good time. Apparently this is what happens to women in America. We're just allowed to be drooled on. Treating us like a guys play thing. Despicable !! Security continued to literally follow us throughout the playhouse. Basically they felt the need to hold our hand. I wouldn't be surprised if they would try to. GARY the head of security, was the one who tailed us the whole time. Oh and I said shit a few times because I got scared and I got in trouble for that too. Mind you, that there is no signage saying no profanity or anything like that. It just says beware if you have a heart condition etc. like people are going to curse and if your child working isn't prepped for that, why work there?!?! So we asked Gary if we could go through again without "training wheels" so to speak and he said no and that he's worried we would cause harm to the actors!! It surprised me that he didn't see that his actor (the one touching us with bodily fluids) was the issue which is not okay. It was an awful experience! I really would love my money back.DO NOT GO!!! Gateway's Haunted Playhouse is a fun and creative attraction geared toward kids. When I got to Gateway there were a ton of kids online probably ages 10 and older. I preordered my ticket online through their website, which offered a slight discount, $5 dollars off I believe. A soon as we parked our car (there's a parking lot) we hoped online and after 5 minutes walked inside, we went through security and then checked in. Once you check in you get a receipt which has a number on it, then you walk outside to the back outdoor area filled with food, beverages, games, a stage, and the haunted house. Above the entrance is a screen displaying numbers- when yours is displayed on the screen can go in and begin the tour! There were tons of rooms, narrow halls, smelly props, adults actors, children actors, inside and outside attractions, clowns, pitch black rooms, massive amounts of strobe lights, and of course people jumping out at you! The house takes about 30-40 minutes if you do it at a moderate pace, if you run through it, 15 minutes. I wasn't scared, but I did jump a couple of times, I liked the rooms and the props there was a lot of detail and thought that clearly went into the haunted house. For the price, $35 you can't go wrong it's a great place to start to ease your self into the haunted house scene. If you don't want to go inside you can chill outside in their refreshment area which has tables and chairs and the obviously refreshments. read more

My husband and I have gone to several haunted houses and this place got me good. The actors and the hydraulic props were timed well. We had the fast pass so we did not have to wait. The haunt was approximately 1 hour. The only complaint I have is that our group caught up to the group in front of us so we had to wait until that group moved so that the scares would not be ruined. The actors inside should try to control the groups by encouraging the slower groups to move faster (scare/walk them out of the room) or slowing down the groups (blocking exit/chitchatting). Other haunted houses do this. There aren't many food options and other than the coffin ride there isn't anything else to do. I wanted to try the coffin ride, but there is a live video feed shown to the crowd. I don't need my mug on youtube. There was a good, but short performance by a fire breather. The souvenir shop was small and did not have a good variety of items, however, I did buy a cute/ugly female zombie plush. read more

I have enjoyed the Gateway Haunted Playhouse for many years. This year I was almost bored by it. I'm not one to be easily startled, but I can still recognize a decent effort. The word lackluster best describes my experience. Maybe it was because I went on the first night and they were still working the kinks out. To me it seemed as though they were just making weird grumbling sounds. One actor came right into my face and breathed hot air at me....but (no offense) he had some bad breath. Scariest haunted house i've ever been in. This is scarier than Universal Studios Halloween horror nights. Blown away five stars.

Definitely worth every penny. I did the fast pass. Had a drink at the bar and went right in. The even had a food truck. Very spooky and lived up to its name. It was about a 30 min haunted house. The detail was amazing and appreciated. The actor were phenomenal and had awesome costumes and makeup. This was hands down my favorite haunted house on the island. Would go again!!!! read more

I strongly recommend not going to this place. It's gone severely down hill. I've gone here every year for the past 5 years and originally decided not to go this year due the outrages new prices, which in my research makes this the most expensive haunted house on LI. But went anyway after some persuasion. After I spent $200 on a 30 minute walk through a haunted house my brother was thrown out in the first 5 min and told to wait off the property for putting his hand on a prop. Not a person. A prop. Trust me, there's no fun to be had here. Security's swarming the place trying to force everyone through as fast as possible. They expect you to act like you're being checked into a prison. Not worth it. I expect manager Paul will respond to my review something to the extent of "follow the rules". I tell Paul in advance to get a grip. If you don't like all your bad reviews then stop crying to the reviewers and do something constructive with the criticism. You earned them. read more

Love this place, I went here October 2014 and have not written a proper review that they so well deserved. I really like going to haunted houses and the ones in Long Island to be quite frank are way better than the once in the city. The tour was long and lasted more than 15 minutes, they had everything I can think of in terms of horror themes from a crazy asylum, scary barns, dead children in a bus, chainsaw killer, crazy possessed women, demented clowns etc. I had so much fun in here! I have attended this haunted house for many years. Think it's been 6 or 7 straight years. The production value and time is well worth the money but I feel like this year and even alittle of last year it hasn't been as good. For being a theater and plays going on through out the year I expect a lot. This haunt always has a different theme each year. From carnival to fairytales to this year time travel but from what i remember last year to this year the theme is in the first few rooms, than once outside it kinda just a haunt and than last room they end it with the theme. I miss the fairytale year when each room continues the theme or the crazy carnival atmosphere. There's def scares and costumes are top notch. But just don't expect a story in my mind. read more
