Absolutely terrible train service, customer service and app. I purchased a ticket on the Gatwick Express app going from Gatwick Airport to London Victoria station. When I tried to scan it at the barriers it wouldn't let me through so I asked a ticket barrier staff member to let me through and showed him the ticket. He mistakenly told me "the ticket is valid from 17th October" however although I had thoroughly checked when purchasing the ticket that it was valid on the day I was confused and believed him as he worked there so I thought surely he must know. This led me to purchase another exact same ticket due to this confusion and being misled by him. I noticed the two tickets were both exactly the same and both were valid from 16th October to 17th October. I spoke to numerous train staff but they said since I had purchased the ticket on the Gatwick Express app I would have to get a refund through the app. The app is terrible it sends you round and round in circles and this is defeating which might lead to so many people not even bothering to get their refund after giving up. I finally found a form to fill out after so many dead end links on the app. Someone finally emailed me and said they can see I was misled into buying two tickets and they will forward my email to the refund team. However that was 5 days ago and still I haven't received any refund. The train itself is called "Gatwick Express" but like so many other have stated that another train goes to Gatwick airport which stops at two other stops on the way and maybe is 5-10 minutes slower with almost half the cost at certain times. It is even misleading to call a train "express" when it doesn't stop at any stops on the way and is at most 5-10 minutes quicker. The staff are not at all helpful and customer service and refunds is very very awful. The app makes it very difficult to get a refund and the staff at the barriers how can they not know a Gatwick Express ticket is valid for the next day but starts the day for which it has been purchased. This sort of train scam should be illegal. read more

There are other ways to get to and from Gatwick, but the Gatwick Express is convenient. I had trouble finding it at Gatwick Airport due to poor signage, but it's there. One thing: There are definitely NOT enough places for luggage. Unless you only have a carry- on size bag, you will find very little space. Most of the luggage has to go into small overhead racks. That can be a real problem when the cars are crowded. Even in First Class, there is ONE space for a regular-size suitcase. Just so you know. A tip: People tend to squeeze into the first few cars, but it's a long train and there are probably seats in the Cars further down the track. Also, when you get to the station in London, be careful. The area is known for people who like other people's possessions. read more

I've traveled on the Gatwick Express twice: once was a total disaster and the other time it was fantastic so I'm rating it in the middle. Each time I was taking the train from Victoria Station to Gatwick Airport early in the morning. Tickets for the GE are expensive, but they (supposedly) run every 15 minutes and they are nonstop trains that whisk you away to the airport. In theory this is great, but the local Southern Railway trains are less expensive and while they do stop, they only take 5 to 10 more minutes or so. One visit I had pre-booked the GE tickets online to save some money but I will NEVER do this again. Turns out the GE trains the morning I had to get to the airport weren't running because of a track problem, so the conductors directed us to the regular commuter trains. We did not get a refund for the extra amount of money we paid for the Express train, which really upset me. The next visit everything ran smoothly but I don't think the GE trains are really worth the extra expense. You aren't really paying for speed, you're paying for less crowded train cars and more space for your luggage. So if you're traveling with a ton of huge bags, the GE is probably the way to go. read more

The Gatwick Express does what it says on the tin, and is useful for those - especially visitors to these shores - who are not familiar with the myriad of train companies and their services which now characterise Britain's train services. It shuttles between Victoria and Gatwick, with no confusing intermediate stops, and you can buy your ticket on board, so there is no need to queue at either end. And the journey only takes 30 minutes, with four trains an hour, and it runs all night (but with a reduced frequency). The trains are purpose built for the service ie they have lots of luggage space. As the other reviews have said, though, you pay a high price for this convenience: £16.60 single and £28.80 return. There are various deals around (eg Easyjet will sell you discounted tickets on in-bound flights) if you plan ahead. But there are alternatives: Southern also operates a train every 15 minutes from Victoria, and takes between 2 and 5 minutes longer - ie hardly any difference. These trains also stop at Clapham Junction and East Croydon, which is better for onward connections to south and south-west London. And it's a lot cheaper - £10.90 single, £21.80 return. The only downside is that the frequency falls away late at night (ie after 21h) but if you are travelling that late it's worth planning ahead anyway. I must confess that I always use Southern. Another alternative if you live in north London or are heading for the City is First Capital Connect (the former Thameslink), which goes via London Bridge, Blackfriars and King's Cross/St Pancras. Again there are 4 trains an hour, although two are slow (1 hour) and two fast (43 minutes to Blackfriars). They are cheaper still - £8.90 single and £17 return. They also do a £55 return option for four adults or children (any combination) travelling together from any destination on First Capital's routes to Gatwick or Luton. And, although it is slower, for many destinations it removes the need for changing onto the underground - a key advantage if you have screaming kids in tow, infeasible quantities of luggage, or (heaven help you) both. However, all this will change when Southern takes over the Gatwick Express franchise in December 2008. They have promised to retain the same branding and frequency to and from Gatwick, and the extra luggage storage. However, six Gatwick Express trains in the morning peak will start at Brighton, calling at Haywards Heath, Gatwick and London Victoria, and the same service will operate southbound in the evening peak. These trains will (it is promised) be longer - a minimum of 10 carriages - compared with the current 7-coach Gatwick Express trains. What is not clear is what will happen to the fares. Our destination was actually a bit further than where this line ended, but again we made a mistake. The ticket man made us pay a separate price as didn't have tickets for this place, and I kinda wish he would have let it slide, but he didn't. It is quite pricey per trip, but effective for getting from downtown London to the Gatwick airport in about 30 minutes. Free wifi in the train which is nice. The Gatwick Express is a non-stop service. This being said, the train does stop and slow down intermittently, but it doesn't stop and open doors to let more riders in, it just delays on the tracks somewhat-possibly due to transportation reasons. The other, less costly train, is the one that makes stops for people to get in and out. It was okay, but felt like it was over priced. You can get a nice view of the suburbs from the train and it's low stress to ride. The ride to and from the Gatwick Airport was about 30-35 minutes. If you know you need a round trip ticket, buy that instead of a one-way since the round trip is less expensive. read more

I enjoyed my ride on the Gatwick Express (to simplify I'll refer to it as GE from now on). It may be expensive, but 1. everything in London is expensive, and 2. you can't beat convenience. Personally, I had a britrail pass so my ticket on the GE was taken care of. However, besides the price, I still enjoyed the ride. I don't know if I'm used to the roughness of a NYC Subway express train flying down uneven tracks, or the BART in SF squealing its head off even on straightaways, but the GE was a very smooth ride. Maybe that's how all trains are in the UK and I've forgotten, but nevertheless the train flies down the tracks at full speed and the ride is as smooth as the most luxurious car you can buy (assuming it's the smoothest ride you can get, of course). I believe the fare was around 22.50... in my opinion that's pretty expensive, but then again the last time I was in London I did pay the full fare for the Heathrow Express. Like I said, convenience. Train cars are clean, and the staff is friendly. They go through with a food cart as well. Unlike Heathrow where you can take the tube, there aren't very many other options out of Gatwick so the GE is your best bet if you're a tourist. read more

The train ride is uneventful. My issue is paying for the ride. I used the Oyster Card throughout my entire stay in London, starting with the Gatwick Express from Gatwick to Victoria Station. The first trip was 10-12 pounds. On my return trip to the airport several days later, I wanted to ensure that I had enough on my Oyster Card, I asked the worker (by gate 12 pay station on 24/05/2017 at ~1914 hours) what the pricing was to get back to the airport. I had ~14 pounds at that time, which I thought was enough. He said 19 pounds. I asked why there was a difference. He retorted that it was Northbound vs Southbound and proceeded to ignore me. Dear marketing genius behind Gatwick Express' promotional campaign: When your slogan, your catch phrase, your product identification, the tag line that you use on *all* of your marketing promotions boasts: "Gatwick Express: 30 minutes non-stop every 15 minutes" Then you'd want your customers to expect, (just taking a wild stab here,) a 30-minute non-stop train journey that runs every 15 minutes. Apparently I was completely mistaken. My bad. You may be surprised to hear that my expectations were not correctly managed as I causally watched the 7am train pull out, only then to frantically learn that next train would not leave for another 30 minutes. Cue Laura's inner monologue panic voice: "Wait... 15 minutes non-stop every 30 minutes? NO! I'm quite sure it's the other way around..." and it was. Just not in reality... only on the billboards. My next train was in 30 minutes, not 15. It took 45 minutes, not 30. And we stopped in the middle of nowhere, for 10 minutes. The best part? It cost me the same as the glory speed trip that is the Heathrow Express... £15 each way. That's just not right. My feelings towards the Gatwick Express partly stem from my own disorganisation as I was running late, so they aren't solely to blame. But this was no where near as "express" as I expected, and ended up nearly missing my flight. You can buy tickets online before you travel. DO THIS. Otherwise you will have to wait in line at Victoria Station for a good 5-10 minutes to buy a ticket, either from a ticket office or the machine. This was the start of my frustrations as I was in a hurry. The ticket was over £20 as well, around the same price as getting to other airports but still extortionate. I'd read the Express leaves every 15 minutes, and takes 30 minutes to Gatwick. Having finally purchased my ticket, I walked on to the platforms (13 & 14) to find no Express train waiting. It was 3.40. The next Express train was at 4pm. Gah! There was a train on platform 14 that was going somewhere else - I found this confusing as all the signage suggested the trains from these two platforms went to Gatwick. When I was finally on the train, I checked the National Rail app and saw there was another train leaving before 4pm on another platform, not an "express" one but still arriving in 30 minutes. I just checked and the price is also cheaper - around £15. More frustration. Finally, the train departs and some 30 minutes later we arrive in Gatwick. Unfortunately if you are then flying with BA it will take around 10 minutes to get to the North Terminal. If you're anything like me, you'll be a burning hot ball of rage by this time. I saw another review (Heather E) comment on the staff being unhelpful and I totally agree. The staff on the platforms went out of their way to avoid talking to customers and telling them which train to get on. I understand they'd come across a lot of tourists here, so it might get annoying for them - but help people out! Booked the tickets in advance and got a good rate and compared to travel from Heathrow etc I would say no different. The transit time from terminal to train is quick and the service is frequent. A word of advice to the newly arrived at Gatwick seeking to get to London: don't bother with the Gatwick Express. No, I'm serious. And here's why. The regular old Southern service from Gatwick to Victoria (stopping at Clapham Junction and East Croydon only) has generally gotten me to Victoria FASTER than the supposed "Express." Sure, there are a couple stops, and the trains are perhaps not quite as well-equipped to handle luggage, but there is plenty... plenty of space. Only first class is ever on offer at the self service kiosks. trains seldom depart on time and pass through so many stations at pedestrian pace that it isn't worthy of the title express. Hmmm, how to review. Wish I had checked Yelp before arranging. Plus point: got seat both legs of journey. Was non-stop to Victoria and pretty seamless and well signposted through airport to get to train. Negatives: shit customer service from ordering tickets online. Failure to deal with website issue, responding to email saying sorry but my journey had passed (it hadn't as still had a week till I travelled) so thats that. Had to pay for website screw up at other end and staff not very helpful. So, friends (and Yelpers) have noted this is a licence to charge poor suckers mucho dosh when trains take 10mins more for a lot less. If you travel at peak times, you'll pay the Gatwick Express premium to still be packed in sardine can style. Plus not all trains are non-stop so be very careful of this. Affordable, fast and comfy. It's an excellent option for transportation from London to Gatwick Airport. If you're travelling with a group of three or four, you only have to pay for the price for two! The top speed is 160 kph and I find it quieter than the EuroStar train. The seats are wide and very comfortable. Also, there is no need to leave your seat if you want drinks or snacks, as there are staff with food/drink carts. read more

This is the fastest and most consistent way to get to Gatwick Airport from Central London. If you live in Central London and fly out of Gatwick Airport, I am sure you are familiar with this service. You can buy tickets on the train (super convenient), but its cheaper online, and its also cheaper if you buy a round trip. What pains me is shelling out around £25 for travel to and from Gatwick. I don't care about the free wifi or drink cart. I'm already grumpy enough about going to the airport without a drink cart hitting my knee as it goes by. Flying from Heathrow gives me a £4 round trip on the tube. I will fly from Heathrow every single time. Every. Single. Time. That being said, if I have to fly from Gatwick, I probably will be using Gatwick Express. read more

Found this service really quick and easy. It takes you direct with no stops from Gatwick airport to Victoria station. It's only about half an hour of a journey which is excellent. The only thing that puts me off is the price. It's £19.00 for a one way journey, or £34 month return. The train itself and how quickly and easy it is to get between London and Gatwick should get five stars. I've gone a few times and the times where there hasn't been a massive problem on the train lines, the service runs smoothly. Sure the cars aren't nearly as new and fancy shmancy as the Heathrow Express, but you're only on there for a short time and it gets the job done. So why only three stars? I find the staff largely unhelpful. I know when someone throws themselves on the tracks, they can't really speculate as to when all services from Gatwick to Central London will resume, but they should have more staff on hand to answer other questions... like can I get a refund for the ticket I just bought on the plane for the Gatwick Express. Or are there any local bus services that can get me to the nearest tube station... I believe the answer to my questions and everyone else's questions were, "I don't know" or "Please queue up to speak to ticket agents". What agents? There was only one and the queue was obnoxiously long. Hints: I emailed the airline that operated the flight I bought the ticket on and they refunded it, but when I emailed Gatwick Express (I emailed at the same time) they were still no help, in fact it seemed like they had no clue that there are airlines selling Gatwick Express tickets. If you cannot get to the National Express quickly before the line reaches insane lengths and you don't want to spend 50 quid and wait half an hour for a 45-50 minute taxi trip to the nearest tube station, try the EasyBus. Seriously a life saver and at 8 quid for a trip to Earl's Court, it will get you to Central London if all train lines south of Croydon are suspended because of a dead body. read more

Express. Is that a joke? Seriously the only express thing is the way they charge you their super high fee for a rubbish, (insert expletive here that I would normally say instead of rubbish ), service. They do the charging in a "I want your money in an express fashion" type of way. The express train dawdles it's way through London to get you to Victoria. Pretty much trying to make sure your are late for your next stop. Getting on and off the train is like trying to go for a wizz at 1/2 time at the football. It is rammed with folk pushing and shoving, except it's actually worse as all these people are sure they are the most important person in the world. You need more? The train is rammed full, they charge a fortune and seem to sell more tickets than seats. If you can, go to Heathrow or London city so you can avoid having the Gatwick express experience. Although I think the taxis in London are charming, to and from the airports are ridiculous fares. So, the Gatwick Express is a very convenient alternative, faster to destination and much cheaper. There are comments it is much more expensive than the regular train and only a little faster. That could be, but for a visitor to the country, everything is expensive in London, so I thought this was on par with that. Otherwise, this is a comfortable ride. I think I prefer the heathrow express a little more by comparison. read more

I try to always travel out to Heathrow airport whenever possible. No joke - the journey has been made from my front room to the Heathrow check-in desk in a 45 minutes before. So why bother going anywhere else? However, I had the occasion last week where I had to travel out of Gatwick. Fundamentally, I actually really like Gatwick airport. The smaller nature of the place always makes me feel slightly less apprehensive before a long journey. And I have had many great journeys out of there in the past. So for me, the first question is how does one actually get to Gatwick? Cabs are always a good option, however there is something about traveling through rush-hour Central London in a cab all the way out to Gatwick (although they call it "London Gatwick", it is nowhere near the place) that makes me fearful of being late if I get caught in traffic. Really, that's not to say that trains will be any more reliable. I just feel that there is often a limit to how long the delay will be. So eventually, I decided upon getting the Gatwick Express from Victoria station. My return fare was £34.90. As a regular user of the Heathrow express I have to say that the Gatwick express falls short. The trains are no better than your regular knackered-slightly-tatty commuter train and it seems that there are very few staff to ask for information. I feel that in comparison to the 15 minutes journey time with the Heathrow Express, the Gatwick Express (30 minutes journey) does not provide that much of an advantage. To take a normal train from Paddington to Heathrow takes a fair amount of time, whereas the difference is only fairly marginal between Victoria and Gatwick whether you take the express route or not. Do remember to check whether you are flying out of the Gatwick North or South terminal as you will need to board a further tram from the south to the north terminal. Overall, a decent enough system, but I do feel that it rides too closely on the Heathrow Express's excellent coattails, without the many advantages. read more

This was a super convenient transportation choice! 1. I had a 9am flight out of Gatwick 2. My rental flat could spit and hit Victoria Station 1+2 =no-brainer. I bought tickets the night before at the station counter. Since every moment of sleep is precious in the morning, I figured a little advance planning might help the cause. The agent at the ticket counter stated that I could take any train tomorrow and that my tickets would be good. As I recall, I paid £18 each for tickets. The convenience of getting on a train, having it leave the station and make one stop was excellent and worth every pound. This is a far superior, though more expensive, commuting option as compared to trucking it out to LHR on the Tube (relatively speaking). I am a huge advocate of this service, and will use it again when travels bring me to London (and I can fly into/out of Gatwick). read more
