I like flying to and from Gatwick. The experience has always been less hectic than traveling to Heathrow. Perhaps because it's smaller. We used this airport quite a bit when we were stationed in the UK. Not that it was closer. It was just more convenient back then since there was a bus that would transport us back to the base. Our most recent experience was just as nice. We were dropped off at the terminal via a NCL chartered transfer from the Southampton cruise terminal. Checking in through British Airways was a breeze. We had no issues going through security. In fact, the security officers were actually quite pleasant. There was a big duty free store that we had to walk through before getting to the south terminal. The BA lounges were all easy to find after that. We had a delay before boarding, but BA kept us informed the entire time. I'm writing this review now because it may be the last time we fly out of Gatwick again. British Airways will be flying a new route from Tampa to London Heathrow later this year. Hopefully it will be just as convenient after the change. read more

We took a direct Norse flight from Los Angeles Airport (LAX) into London Gatwick Airport (LGW). They are a secondary hub for British Airways and one of the largest operating bases for budget flights. My experience with this airline is only as an arrival, as I travelled through other parts of Europe by train and by air. The arrival was quite smooth as far as international travel is concerned. We were able to get through customs quickly. However sadly no stamp on the passport for the international travel. Restrooms had abundant stalls but there were really busy. The handwashing stations were individually in each stall. I had a decent experience in the women's stalls where I was comfortable enough to brush my teeth and wash my face. However my boyfriend mentioned that the men's side was really gross, not clean enough to clean up and reset after the long flight. My favorite thing about this airport is that it is connected to a train system that will take you into central London or whichever surrounding area you need to get to. Navigating was pretty simple. A quick and convenient arrival. I would consider flying back into this airport in the future. read more

I had to take a bus ride from the London Gotwick International Airport to Heathrow International Airport for a connecting British Airways flight in one of my trips. The smaller Gotwick Airport have clean facilities, less busier than the Heathrow Airport, but still busy nonetheless. It is accessible and convenient, easy to navigate around the area. It have an ample choices for coffee shop, deli, convenience and souvenir stores, restaurants and bars, and duty free shops. This airport never fails to amaze me, as this is my nearest airport I go here quite frequently, you will always find seats no matter what time of year as both terminals are massive. The walk to the gates isn't that long compared to Stansted, the passport control queues are mostly good but in summer they can be pain, getting out of the airport is so easy, you can take the local bus (MetroBus) towards Crawley, or you can take the National Express bus towards London or the train, The only bad things are the amount of delays they are, and the £10 drop-off charge, otherwise staff are so nice and friendly. read more

We left London with enough time for the train ride to Gatwick Airport or better known as the "Gatwick Express. The ride lasted about an hour in a very comfortable seat with plenty of space for luggage. It was nice that Victoria Station was across the street from our hotel. "This was a great airport to travel home from. It's also big, really big. I found it easy to maneuver and there is plenty of space to sit and plenty of restaurants to eat. Getting to the gate and through security was easy. The airports are really starting to move the passenger through the process painlessly. After security, we sat in the common area for a while next to the Harrods of London Store and of course I bought great souvenir for my neighbor there. You have to wait in this common area utill they call you to your gate. When they called our flight we got up and walked to our boarding area... It seemed like we walked for days. I really liked Gatwick airport. It was well organized and had a lot of dining and shopping options. Their duty free shopping section is HUGE. It's the size of a mall and they have all the designer brands and tons and tons of alcohol for some reason. We ate at a brewery there and it was pretty good. The restrooms were clean and large. There was plenty of seating and places to charge your devices. They had a large glass ceiling that let in lots of natural light. Getting through security was smooth and the officers were very nice. Not a bad airport! It is huuuuuuuuuuuge though! Easy to get lost and confused. But- lots of food options (quick bites and restaurants to pick from). Plenty of places to sit and wait for your flight! There's even places to do some shopping to kill time if you are stuck there on a layover. I had a 5 hour layover at Gatwick Airport. Charged £48 for 1 cm: I Won't Be Flying easyJet Again I recently flew with easyJet and, based on this experience, I will no longer be booking flights with them--and neither will the people I regularly travel with. EasyJet, that's multiple future bookings you have now lost. Just before boarding at Gatwick, my small suitcase was found to be roughly 1 cm too tall, despite all other dimensions being within limits. I was charged £48 to upgrade my bag. The case has flown with easyJet and other airlines many times without any issue and it fits perfectly under the seat, where I have placed it on previous flights. On my return flight, the bag wasn't checked at all--highlighting how inconsistent and arbitrary these checks can be. With so many similar negative reviews on TrustPilot and TravelAdvisor for example, it's clear this kind of treatment is their standard practice. It's disappointing to see an airline handle their customers this way, especially when I'm due to travel soon to one of their destinations--but will now be choosing another carrier. Plenty of choice there. I hope this review helps other passengers: EasyJet's bag checks are extremely strict, inconsistent, and leave no margin whatsoever. Hands down one of the Best Airports I have ever traveled through anywhere in the world!!!! While staying in France, we decided to spend 36 hours in London, so we flew from Charles De Gaul into Gatwick... Our flight had us landing at 7:30 and we need to connect with the train into London by 8:00 so no margine for error... We land on time taxing to our gate, and then we make our way to up the Jetway and through the doors as we work our way to customs moving like the wind. Once we got to the customs area, all we had to do was take a picture, and all our info popped up on their screen, and off we went!!! From customs to the main train connection, we went up the stairs and to the platform with 15 minutes to spare. Well, we made it to London and are now back heading home. From the train platform to checking in, it was a cool breeze!!! As we make it through customs and security, you walk through the biggest souvenir store ever, and let me tell you, we bought tons before making it out like two large bags full of gifts!!! We finally made it out of the store and into the common area of the airport that was just as cool, with lots of restaurants and even more stores to shop from... While you wait for your gate to pop up, usually 30 minutes prior to departure, they have plenty of tables and seating with charging stations galore. It was probably the first time I never had to worry about my phone being charged!! Again, the best airport ever traveled through!!! read more

My car was damaged while in the care of the Gatwick Airport North Terminal valet service. This is being disputed by NCP but so far Customer Care have failed to provide hi res images to back up their claim the damage was present on arrival. Having followed the process, and provided various pictures of the damage, I am disgusted at the lack of ownership Gatwick is taking to resolve this issue. Way finding signage is pretty bad in the airport. Thankfully there are nice people working here who are happy to answer my questions. But I shouldn't need to ask something as straight-forward as " where are the connecting busses? ". Similarly, the lifts going up to check in and bag drop off state " level 1 check in and bag drop off " and " level 2 check in and bag drop off ". Why is there no indication which destinations or airlines are on each level? Why should I have to walk through most of level 1, find someone to ask a question of before learning that my airline is on level 2? A simple sign could have saved me a lot of time and walking. I don't personally mind walking, but traveling with a 4 year-old is a different story. read more

Personally I thought this airport was top of the line as far as airports were concerned. First and foremost, it took me like 5 minutes to get through security and the system was incredibly efficient. After security, I sat in the common area for a bit (which, in all fairness, could use a few more outlets) before moving to a Wetherspoons pubs where I had a couple cheap glasses of wine and an appetiser before boarding my flight. Boarding was easy and I was able to find my gate with no problem. Overall an easy to navigate airport with enough decent options for food and drink. Pretty solid. read more

It's quite popular for puddle jumpers to other European cities. Located in West Sussex about 30 miles south of Central London. I caught the Gatwick express train from Central London to the airport one early morning. My flight to Rome next on my adventure. Upon arriving I enter the security check point - very efficient and professional. Once I cleared the check point I enter the maze of designer shops and kiosks. It's tempting to stop and be sprayed on by Burberry cologne, but hey, like many European metrosexuals I'm literally running through the maze. "Don't you forget about me I'll be alone, dancing you know it, baby Going to take you apart I'll put us back together at heart, baby..." The waiting area is spacious enough with fun shops like Harry Potter to the airport version of Harrods. Cafes and eateries are plenty. For me, I chose Warrens Bakery mainly because it was local and so Brit. And before you know it I was boarding my puddle jumper to Roma... "Don't you, forget about me Don't, don't, don't, don't Don't you, forget about me..." Ahhh don't you just love 1980's British bands? Anyways... In the end, I recommend Gatwick Airport to all. For overseas long distance flights I've always flown into London Heathrow, but Gatwick did everything right for my European connections. Hopped here from Greece and then departed here to Montreal, I have to say I was a fan of the Gatwick airport for transiting through London. Although I've never landed Heathrow, this one just seems to be smaller and more manageable, while still having plenty of international flights whether to get to Europe or fly to Canada. First of all if you land here and you're trying to get to London, following the signs for the train are pretty simple. Just follow the signs. Instead of trying to fumble around to buy a metrocard, just tap your credit card at the station entrance and then tap out when you leave. Super fast and efficient! The pub outside of security has decent breakfast food (not sure about lunch). Once you're in past security, there's a Shack Shack and some other familiar looking spots. All in all; I've had no issues transiting through Gatwick. Although it lacks the lounges (as far as I can tell) and amenities of some of the larger airports, it's a solid, practical transit point. read more

It's on par with other regional airports and I forgot how frustrating it is to wait for gate announcement here - they don't release gate info until half an hour from your flight, then you have to hurry to your gate, which also include border passport control! Fit in extra time and head there once you see your gate info has been announced! read more

WOW are they strict here. Almost a little bit more strict than LAX! Of the London airports, Gatwick is a few and far between kind of airport that services just a couple airlines, namely the low cost ones. My boyfriend and I were traveling to Barcelona so this is where Easyjet was departing. To get there, the easiest and fastest method is to just take the tube. We departed from the city center but it wasn't terribly difficult to navigate here since it was a direct train to the airport itself. It's a small airport but TSA is incredibly strict. This is the only airport that I know of in contineEurope that actually requires their visitors to remove their shoes when being searched. This of course was only back in 2017 when I traveled so it very well could have changed between then and now but it was quite an interesting experience to have. One thing I love about Gatwick is that there's quite a bit of duty-free shopping available for you to pass the time. This is nice even for a small airport so they get a good rating for this. There's not much else to say and to be honest, very few people will probably ever come to this airport but since I didn't have a bad experience here I have to give it a fairly good rating! The Gatwick Airport is a decent international airport that offers a wide variety of airlines and destinations. The customs/immigration process was easy and straightforward and the checkin process upon departure was also easy. They offer charging stations around the area to charge your devices/electronics but you will need a UK adapter if you don't already have one. When I fly to and from London, I prefer Gatwick to Heathrow. Yes, Gatwick is growing in size, but it's still a smaller, more intimate, and less stressful airport than the city's more bustling sibling. I usually fly British Airways or Virgin Atlantic across the pond, and I'm normally jetting in and out of Gatwick when I'm on VA. The airport is a pain to get to from the city, as you have to take a city train that's a long ride to get to the main tourist areas. You can buy tickets on the Gatwick Express (a roughly 30 minute non-stop train service from LGW to Victoria Station), which I think is worth it if you have a very early or very late flight, but the tickets are expensive and half the time the service breaks down and you end up on the multi-stop cheaper Thameslink or Southern train anyway. No Tube station runs all the way out to Gatwick, so be aware. Taxis are insanely expensive, and bus service is cheap but takes a couple of hours for the journey. No matter your choice, make sure you allow PLENTY of time because it's a time-consuming journey. The airport has a small selection of shops and restaurants, and new renovations have spruced up the place. The airport has free wi-fi and a decent amount of seating in the common areas. Flights to and from LGW are often cheaper than those to and from LHR. I also like the landscape as you takeoff and land from Gatwick (lots of beautiful green below instead of high rises and city views). Those arriving should consider paying for Gatwick's premium passport control line, as the customs lines are usually massive. read more

Airports are open and we used Gatwick North for our Turkish Airlines flight. Security was fast and efficient. Naturally, all masked. Once through security all was fantastic. Not as busy as we have seen in the past which was quite pleasant. Plenty of time to get to the boarding gate. Return was a little harrowing as the queues at boarder control spiralled around the hall. Checks were needed for vaccination status and Passenger location. I know it's difficult, at times, to get a printed out form but, make sure you know where it is on your phone. So much time is wasted on people standing at the desk fiddling with their phone. I won't even mention those where the phone was flat!!!! I left that to the blonde female Border Agent who managed, in a loud voice, to let everyone know. read more

I love Airports. I'm a very patient person so I don't mind queues. I also really like passing security and blabla because I'm in my happy to be on a trip bubble. But let me tell you, this place.... I had a hard time liking it. It's the kind of airport almost everyone stops at for a layover and this place isn't really crowd friendly. Sure there is lots of seating, but no plugs. Yeah, some restaurants, but very meh ones. Sure there are lots of stores, but with stuff that doesn't really look good or is too expensive to bother buying. Customs also took a lot longer than usual, they only had two agents working that day and it was taking forever! Once it got to my turn the lady spent at least 15 minutes grilling me about all different sorts of aspects of my trip. They also announced my gate number 20 minutes before my scheduled flight! Like how am I supposed to prepare for that? I basically waited to see my gate number and then sprinted (I did get there first though which was neat). I had about 5 hours to kill, spent 1 hour looking for a seat with a plug, spent the next 4 sleeping in said seat while charging my phone. read more

This is the lesser of the two major London airports. We only arrived, so I can't speak to the departure process. Like Heathrow it is a long walk from the gates to the baggage claim area. The baggage claim area is a bit claustrophobic with low ceilings and felt a bit like a bus terminal. Most major US carriers use Heathrow, but some British Airways flights arrive here like our nonstop from Vegas. Baggage delivery was reasonably fast, and clearing customs and immigration was a non-issue thanks to their automated immigration gates. Free WiFi is available and fairly easy to connect to. Gatwick Express train is available to get you into London. We opted for a car service, though, rather than deal with luggage on the train and then having to haul it through the connecting subway stations. The train takes about 30 minutes I believe. The car ride took more like 60-75 minutes to get to our London hotel. It was worth for door to door service, though. Gatwick is further from the city than Heathrow. Overall this was a fair airport but Heathrow is a nicer choice and offers many more flight options and a more pleasant travel experience. read more

9/13/17 This airport is approximately 29 miles from London. It was built in 1930. It wasn't until 1934 that it provided flights to other countries on a regular basis. It is a single use runway airport and until 2016 was the busiest single use runway in the world. This airport is a little dated. It is clean and usually very busy. There are lots of duty free shops as well as a small pharmacy. The airport has a large police presence. The railway is located in the same building which makes it nice for getting around London. read more

Gatwick is a pretty strict with their fluids observation and scanning systems. On both directions of our international flights we had our liquids in the clear bag, pulled out, and laid in a bin. Both times our bags got chosen to be searched. No other liquids were found in our bags and we were sent on our way, but this was definitely an annoyance! Gatwick has a few food options (maybe ~5-6) and a lot of other construction going on to add a few more options. I wish they had more breakfast options, but we did find a place that had a few fresh, hot, breakfast sandwiches to choose from! read more

ARRIVAL EXPERIENCE: This place is huge but there's nothing in it. We passed few shops or dining options but customs was quick and public transportation is easily accessible, with helpful staff and 90 minutes free wifi available. The south terminals are being remodeled but security was quick (5 minutes!), there are healthy dining options, a huge duty free area, and plenty of spots to charge your device. Even as a connector flight, it's by far the worst airport, worst design that will have turned backwards, and the staff are literally the worst, the rudest people you will ever come across. The police here need to be slapped upside there head and wait never mind there not public servants here and don't care about any of your problems let alone helping you if you have any issues. There's one place I'll never find myself in again and thats this place. Your better off risking your life and paying whatever ransom they want by boat with a bunch of Somali pirates than trying to actually catch your flight out of here without being robbed blind by all the hidden fees and non sense you have to go through just to catch a connecting flight. read more

For what seemed like an unusually busy weekend, I'm glad my husband and I didn't fly through Heathrow airport for our honeymoon. We had a few hours wait until our connecting flight, and the process of getting through the airport was smooth. I don't recall any issues. There was plenty of eateries and seating centralized upstairs. Restaurants were hit-or-miss in my opinion, but those will each have a separate review. It's nice that there's a kids area... all travelers seemed pretty happy despite the wait. The only downside is that because it was a small, busy airport, the VIP lounge was super busy. I could have paid five euros for a reservation but didn't realize I'd be waiting so long. There are monitors updating with gate numbers, so the key is to sit next to one of them. We were in a bit of a panic because of how late the gate information is released before the flight. We realized this is normal in Europe, though my husband was still worried. Fortunately it was a short walk to the gate, and we made it on-time. Success! read more

I was surprised by how busy this airport was. I guess I just always thought that Heathrow got all the mid-week travelers and that Gatwick would be a smaller, easier to navigate version of LHR. We rode the Gatwick Express in from London, which is such a nice convenience that I would love to have in my own home city. We arrived at Gatwick super early, because neither of us knew what to expect from the airport, check-in, security or lines, and we'd much rather be early than late and chance missing our flight. We had time to walk by all the restaurants and shops, and more than enough time for a sit-down lunch. The airport never really felt as crowded as it looked, which was nice. We were able to navigate the different floors and areas with relative ease, though it did seem as though we walked several miles throughout the airport without really getting anywhere. The entrance to our gate was fine - the queue was longer than expected, but they managed it well. What they didn't manage well was the boarding announcement, which was made by one small man without a microphone, and without the drive to project his voice. Small airport - easily accessible via Thameslink (11 pounds) from London Bridge Terminal) which drops you off at South Terminal. Also utilized their VAT refund and there was no wait, which I was a bit concerned about since I was taking an international flight and Norwegian waits were terrible. Security checkpoint was fast. It appears that the actual boarding gates is primarily responsible for checking ID so checkpoint is quite efficient. One complaint- need free scales Ridiculous to charge 1 pound for this service; it was free at the Venice airport (Marco Polo). Isn't it better to reduce the wait time of checking in if the common issue is overweight luggages? Norwegian has a strict weight policy. read more

It's the smaller alternative to Heathrow that all the budget airlines use. Other reviews haven't mentioned how to get to Gatwick from the city, so I'll just mention that part, because it can save you so much money, and it's rubbish that more people don't know. What you do is you take the Circle or District line to Blackfriars Station (£3 max?), and then transfer to the Thameslink and ride that a few stops to Gatwick (£8.30). It shouldn't take more than an hour. Also, there are staff members all throughout both stations for guidance. Do I recommend it? Absobloodylutely! Ubers into town are about £60-80, and you have to be a nutter to go that route. Aces! read more
