There's a terrible dearth of dance clubs in suburban Boston and Marquee is trying to fill the gap. Fridays are Latin nights and Saturdays are what they call "Old School R&B, Hip Hop & Reggae". I'll describe Saturdays below as I've not been to any Latin nights. The club consists of three areas. First, there's a lower room where older (70s/80s/90s) dance music is played. The DJ is good and the room is nicely laid out with some cushy seating, stand-up tables, and a rather long bar. There's plenty of room for dancing. The crowd trends towards older (which includes me!). It wasn't a large crowd tonight; I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Second, there's the main club, which is much larger and much more crowded. There, we have an excellent DJ mixing newer music, e.g. 2000s and on with a few older songs. It's louder and he produces a nice steady R&B dance groove most of the night, omitting the slow dreary hip-hop that has emerged the past decade or so. There are two bars and the place is well-decorated and looks fairly modern. Clearly, a lot of thought was put into how to transform it from whatever it used to look like. The crowd consists of a nice mix of ethnic groups (black, white, & Hispanic), with everyone feeling comfortable and enjoying themselves. The third is what they refer to as the Lounge, which is the section you pass through before you go to either of the clubs I described above. It has a bar, some dancing, and places to sit. It's a good place to go if either of the main rooms are too crowded. They serve some food (pizza, wings, warm doughnuts) there also before the other rooms open at 9:00. The crowd was well-behaved with no one overdoing the drinking and the Creepy Guy count was quite low so women should be happy. There's plenty of parking and there's also a police presence but they had nothing to do and just strolled around. The staff is very nice--a number of them used to work at the old Vincent's down the street. Overall, Marquee is an excellent place for people to dance & socialize without having to go into the city. It may need a little polishing here and there but that will probably be taken care of later. I think it's time for people to get out from behind their computers & tablets and try to actually meet and mingle a bit. Marquee would be a good place to start.

JP Jitterbugs is an open-air dance venue on the shore of Jamaica Pond (at the Jamaica Pond Boat…read moreHouse). The dances occur on some Saturdays and typically start at 4 or 5PM with an hour and a half beginner lesson, followed by a party, typically to live music. The boat house is a small two-storey structure (upper level is an open terrace with a roof) at the end of the lake corner of the Pond street, there is typically a pretty large crowd around it. You need to register for event (at the top of the stairs), vaccination is required, mask is optional. You will be fitted with a color-coded bracelet (there is an elaborate signaling ritual, starting with green "I am OK to dance with anyone, masked or not", all the way to the red "I cannot dance with strangers"). On the day I visited, the dance was technically free, with $5-$15 donation suggested. The venue: The band plays on the terrace. There are two dance surfaces: a small dance floor upstairs for a chosen few and a large asphalt surface downstairs for the unwashed masses like me. The latter has one of the most atrocious surfaces to be used for dancing, comparable only to the Lindy in the Park in San Francisco. Leave your good dance shoes at home and avoid any pivots or spins unless you are very sure of what you (and your partner) are capable of. Multiple park benches are available nearby, so sitting down is not an issue. Limited amount of shade is available. The crowd: more than 100 people of very mixed abilities, from absolute beginners to very advanced. Percentage of beginners is pretty high. On the day I visited there were noticeably, but not catastrophically, more followers than leads. Overall: a very high level of fun for an outdoor venue, in my (limited) experience comparable only to Lindy in the Park in the SF Golden Gate park (JP runs less frequently and has fewer onlookers, but it features live music and a pond to marvel at). Highly recommended. If you are a follower and do not know the community, bringing your own lead might be wise. A water bottle will also come handy.

The dances are usually held at the West Cambridge Youth Center on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Saturdays of each month. While there's street parking, the golf course across the street has a lot that you can sneak into. The dance hall is pretty sizable and it's clean. The floors aren't crappy and there aren't any loose boards. The facilities are fine and shouldn't have to resort to carrying a bottle purell. The music is old school, undoubtedly. Hey, if you were looking for something more updated, you'd be heading to the club, yeah? There's a live band and when they take breaks, there's recorded music to keep things going. It's a good workout and can be a lot of fun. People there are generally friendly and some will dance with you if you're alone. I didn't spot any creepers. Checking-in on Yelp will yield you a free drink. They have sodas, water, and juices. There are workshops and swing dance lessons before open dance period, if you're in need to not embarrass yourself in front of your date.

Half way through the night, guys were in the bathroom changing into clean dry shirts -- then back on the dance floor! It was just so fun! I came back the next week and took the free lessons again and got better. I had a blast! The next week, I brought a first date promising her a fun night of dancing. We had so much fun at the lessons together and then dancing to the amazing band, Eight To The Bar! About 2 years later, that sweet girl and I were married. I am so glad the memory of our first date will always be Swing City! Just go. You'll laugh, you'll smile, and you'll dance. Everyone does at Swing City.

I'm very impressed by Courtney and all the other instructors and performers who have built such a welcoming community. The Rozzie Square Theater hosts so many fun shows such as the signature ComedySportz which was my gateway into the space. I've also attended the monthly Queer Comedy, annual AAPI festival, free drop in, student showcases and more. Courtney makes trying improv extremely accessible so I've had the pleasure of bringing several friends to try it themselves. So far I've also taken the Improv for Anxiety and 1A/B, and 2A class series (8 weeks for each) so far each with different instructors. If you are even slightly curious about improv and/or comedy this is a great place to try!

Rozzie Square Theater is so small that you may pass it while blinking…read more I did for a few years. But then I found out about it through an invitation, and I went. Using Google Maps...I passed it again. Small is intimate. And that was just the setting we needed for this fun afternoon of three 20 minute plays. We were all engaged, and there were no bad seats. In fact, I met and networked with Larry Pizza (yes, that's right) in the back row (of two rows in all.) His play, "Elvis/Dean," was an hilarious encounter at LAX of a theater teacher and his girlfriend meeting his former student. She's rude; he's evasive; the girlfriend is protective. It's all the tension you need for good comedy (Larry does improv.) But then it takes a turn. I won't say more. Emily Cherin, Sean Gauthier, and Albamarina Nahar play both sides of the fence. The Harold that Goes Wrong, by writer Zach Reisch, directed by Sean Gauthier, is all about improv. Larry didn't write, but he makes an unexpected acting appearance. It's about a theater person's greatest fear: the actors forget their lines. Here, uh, that doesn't exactly happen. If you can use one word to describe this play, it's dissonance. Charlie Haycook, Greg Hovanesian, and Annie Coyne were loud, abrasive, and hilarious - just what the play needed.izza Moontown We were lost for a while as to whether Jun-Ang Ni's and Sean Gauthier's characters' songs about the moon were literal or metaphoric, but then we see they are kind of both. This is a dreamy dirge about life on - really Earth - with songs about the moon. Sean's line, to paraphase, "I'm not going to make you only reflect my light," (or something like that) was poetic. Let's see more from Rozzie Square Theater.
