Buyer beware. Among other items, I purchased four upholstered chairs ($595 each) 2 years ago for a dining table rarely used. The seats began to sag approximately 5". After flipping them over I saw the straps used underneath were elastic, stretched and sagging. I contacted GDC and they stated that the chairs were from Universal and out of warranty. I asked what the warranty was and the very annoyed employee (Kristen or Christine) said she would find out if that's what I wanted her to do (never heard from again) and that the store would give me their wholesale price on another purchase. She said that would be 30% off retail. After years working in retail I seriously doubt GDC only marks up 30%. And why oh why would I spend more money and not expect the same poor quality? They never offered to have them repaired by an upholsterer. Having no real options, I spent my Sunday with my trusty staple gun repairing all four chairs hoping to get another year or two out of them. Note to customer, when spending $595/chair at GDC realize it only has a one year warranty (found that out on the internet) and the quality is subpar at best. Oh, and before I addressed the sagging issue, one chair's caster spilled ball bearing onto my wood floor leaving scratches where they caught under the wheels. GDC DID send me 4 new casters. The point being the quality might just be rivaled by a big box store with little responsibility falling on GDC. Needless to say I will not be back and will share my experience with others. read more

Mt. Pleasant is very fortunate to have this beautiful stylish home store. No furniture and decor hunt would be complete without a stop at GDC. I have always had great experiences with the helpful courteous staff. GDC's selection is excellent. There are so many special items to choose from that rarely leave empty handed. I love their bedding. My only suggestion is they would benefit from having some more affordable decorative pillows to choose from. read more

Tried the Mount Pleasant GDC store after repeat poor experience at the Kiawah store. Same. Walked in and the two employees at the desk (they were not with customers and they were not on the phone) never bothered to acknowledge me in any form. I walked the entire store and was never greeted or asked if I needed any help. I lingered near the entrance/exit before I left just to see if someone may finally have a welcoming word...nothing. This was not the shopping experience I was expecting. With all the recent media advertising, I was expecting to stock up on hostess gifts and Christmas gifts; however, there was very little merchandise priced at 50% off ... and, what was available was picked over or odds and ends. Did I find my new living room chair? Not today! The advertised 15% off was only a 'drop in the bucket' relative to the original cost of the high end merchandise on display. Perhaps, I might have scoured the room settings a little longer ... and, maybe, I might have found a gem ... but no one approached me ... so after 20 minutes, I walked out. read more

Went in to purchase a desk suitable for a desktop computer and a floor lamp. Outrageous pricing. Nevertheless, I purchased a simple desk and a kind of cheap looking floor lamp ( for $287.00!). They were delivered today. The desk has scratches all over it and is covered in dust and grime. Perhaps that was hidden from me by lighting in the store but I am not sure. I think it is possible that I was shipped a return or something that they found in their warehouse. Okay, they marked it down by 25% on my invoice ( without explanation). Here is my problem: my rep should have called me and reported that when they pulled the desk out of stock that it was a nightmare. I would have said, "Cancel the entire order. " But they did not call and give that option. BBB anyone? And as I mentioned earlier the desk arrived dusty and dirty and scratched. Some of the dirt is hard to remove. I can't believe that no one had the courtesy or common sense to take a Can of Pledge and wipe it down. Why wouldn't you do that? The lamp is nice but they shrink wrapped the cord to the pole so tightly that I scratched the lamp while removing the tape and cut my finger on it. Once unbundled, the the lampshade is tilted due to the cheap base below the socket. That is the same reason why I wanted to replace the first one. Overall, I feel like I have been had and will never return to any of their locations. What a disappointment and disaster! read more

The rudest staff! I went in shopping for a couch and a dining room table, no one ever asked if I need help. Instead, 2 sales people stood around complaining about having to wear a mask while one of them coughed loudly. For us, GDC is the only place to go if you want high quality, forever furnishings for your home. Everything I've ever purchased over the years continues to be of the finest quality. Most recently, we purchased a new sofa. The workmanship and high quality of the leather is outstanding. Our daughter was so excited about it, because she knows one day it'll be hers and will still be just as beautiful as the day I brought it home. We've tried to buy furnishings elsewhere. They just don't last. The fabric fades, stitching comes out, the frames break down. Not so with GDC's products. They are everlasting. After my most recent experience, I will never shop elsewhere. This is investment furniture. Workmanship defined. Employees are knowledgeable about the products and always SO VERY helpful. Not a good decorator? They all can help. Choosing and blending fabrics? After reading the reviews I was hesitant going to this store. To be honest it was not at all like other reviewers said. We were greeted by several employees when we entered. After looking around 5 minutes or so we were approached by Heather who was wonderful. She was very patient and helpful. Even took me to see merchandise that hadn't even been put on the floor yet. She was extremely helpful and ended up buying quite a few pieces that were unique. Will definitely be returning! read more

I went in to buy fabric. I walked around for AN HOUR WITH NOT ONE PERSON ASKING IF I NEEDED HELP. They were too buy gossiping about dogs, weekend activities and heating up their lunches. I did notice however, that they did ask people for help that might've looked more well heeled than me (highlights, plastic surgery, louis vuitton bags). I was in work out clothes -- but that shouldn't matter. I did come back and buy $60/yard fabric b/c I found one I really liked and I was tight on time so at the end of the day I spent some cash there. But next time I will shop elsewhere because the attitude of the people that work there stinks and they are super snotty. And I'm not the only one who thinks so -- all my other Mt. After not being able to locate what I needed and being offered no help, I left and went to Joanne's where I was treated respectfully and was offered help. I visited GDC Home last time I was in the Charleston area, and even though I was just "window shopping," the staff was very friendly. And I can't say enough about the aesthetics and quality of the furnishings! I was in Mount Pleasant from out of town this past weekend (specifically looking for "beachy" type furniture for my sunroom. I saw some fabulous chairs from the road and decided to give this shop a try, I would have bought them on the spot. NEVER AGAIN!! Walked in, not a word was spoken, not a greeting mentioned, not an offer for help for the entire time I was browsing. Guess I should have worn my Sunday best to deem myself worthy of assistance in their fine establishment! So I proceeded to tell them about on my way out , jumped in my mercedes, never to step foot in a GDC again! THE ABSOLUTE WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE (OR ACTUALLY NON-EXISTENT). I made a special trip to GDC, Freshfields...for which I had a pre conceived high regard based on Advertising in publications such as Charleston Magazine and the longevity of the store. I wanted to see it, partly due to curiosity, and Actually looking for some things. After being in the Store a few minutes, I noticed I was not acknowledged, or welcomed. Granted, one person was wrapping and one on a call. (I'd like to suggest ways to handle that: person Wrapping could look up and give a "welcome".... At minimal. Or, "welcome!... I'll be available soon, Should you need assistance." Person on phone to the person on line..."please hold one second. Then: "hello... we will be with you in a minute should you need anything." Not only anything like that.... here is how it continued: BOTH ladies available... talked among themselves.. two waking past a friend with me who was standing looking at an item...and he literally Had to step back as one came into the space....Not Saying: excuse me, hello, did you need assistance,etc. (he was interested in an expensive item.) instead, she was intrusive and obtrusive! In the meantime, I found three items of interest for purchase ... still no acknowledgment... while the Two ladies went to the computer to look at something and have discussion. Meanwhile, I'm standing there flabbergasted! Then, a lady and gentleman walked in with fabric, I think... so assume there had been prior connection between them and both ladies were welcoming to them! So, I walked up and stood in front of the one lady not involved with the couple... she ignored me... Until I said "oh, you know, it's ok that I did not receive any acknowledgement or help with what I wanted." She glanced at me and barely indicated she heard me... looking down and going about her business!! ALL TRUE STORY! Therefore, I went empty handed to my destination without a gift I was to take and told my story! My local friends made note of it! When looking at Yelp, afterward, ahow interesting To see others have mentioned their experience of the "I'm better than you attitude!" By the way: we just came from The Sanctuary, Wearing Vineyard Vines and Peter Millar. Not that it should matter, but looked presentable and still didn't make a difference. I'm shocked that in this area this is acceptable. Southern Hospitality at its worst. No wonder the Store has to advertise, to attempt to overshadow Bad experiences and poor word of mouth. read more

As I'm furniture shopping I was told to come to a local store, GDC. My price range was between 1-3k. As I walked around I said hi to the group of girls working the register and got nothing. Then as me and my partner walked around the store we were not helped once. I felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. To all that I say good bye GDC and hello Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn. If this treatment was due to my coming in on gym cloths that is still not an excuse for such behavior to anyone you want to sell to. read more

Went all over town to find a large buffalo check and found only incompetent, unknowledgeable people who had no inkling of what I was looking for. Then I went to GDC and after only a couple of minutes in the fabric section, Sarah Aljabri, fabric consultant, approached me to offer assistance. Not only did she know what I was looking for, she knew some designers that offered the fabric and was able to narrow down my search in minutes. We found exactly what I was looking for. Yes, it was more expensive than what I had originally planned but I will now have top quality linen fabric to recover my beloved chairs than some crap I will have to replace in a couple of years. She gave me space to walk around the store and also showed me a few other pieces that may interest me. If I wanted to listen to a blond going on about her mom buying her a shopping spree in Charlotte, I would have called a friend. So unprofessional keeping on about upcoming holiday and buying store merchandise for oneself but when asked 1) couldn't be bothered to find a measuring tape, 2) apparently not familiar w store policy regarding delivery and returns (and made that clear in a condescending way, as if I was the idiot) and 3) at no point appeared to have any interest in any of the customers. Of all (and I have been to a LOT) of furniture stores in mount pleasant, this blonde was the "icing of the cake". I admit, a middle aged clerk did ask if she could help. Of course she never looked at me, or up from what she was doing so I guess I can't be certain she was talking to me. I will NEVER come back. And I'll spend my money (and I am about to spend a lot for my new house), in a store where the clerks don't have the misconception that they are doing me any favors by showing up to work. I went in today to gather some information about purchasing a sofa. I really had trouble communicating with the salesperson, Dawn. We just were not on the same page. I am an informed consumer. I think my questions were concise and pertinent. I just could not get a straight answer. As I was browsing near the break area I heard an employee using foul language. I went to Stuckey & Sons. They seem to have decent furniture at reasonable prices. The salesperson there was certainly more informed and helpful. read more

I am a designer by trade and do mostly upholstery work. I love the selection from this store...I mean lov(ED). the selection of fabric has gone downhill and there are barely any samples that are cut to take to the projects. So much is now "to order" and I can't take samples to my clients for approval. Clients love hands on and cannot visualize without material in hand. The service just sucks here. I needed a sample to be cut because even on the rolls that should be cut, they aren't stocked, but I had to wait while the clerk BS about kids and high school and columbia with a client WHILE working on something for a different lady and I sat waiting...FOR A SAMPLE...only to be told they don't have one and can't cut one, but i could purchase 1/4 yard of fabric...NOW if I did that for all my clients projects I would be broke. Needless to say, love to shop local and have hands on, but once again, I will have to turn my back on this business due to lack of professionalism, lack of stock and not ONE sales person looked up to help ANY of the customers in that store...not even the girl at the desk looked up at clients walking in to greet them. read more

I need to buy furniture for my entire house so I went to GDC on the recommendation of a friend. None of the employees spoke to me or acknowledged me in any way. Some reviewers mentioned they were in workout attire. I was dressed nicely, with jewelry and makeup. I was there on a weekday and they weren't even busy. I've had my eye on a particular fabric for a while. In August, I went to GDC with the intention of purchasing 30 yards for re-upholstery. When the sales person finally stopped chatting with her friend and took time to help me, she advised me that GDC would offer a 20% off sale in September. Sounded good; I could wait. When I returned today to purchase the fabric, I was told that the regular price has increased by 20%. Therefore. the sale price is now what I would have paid to begin with in August. What a rip-off! Raise the price and then declare a sale! I will definitely take my business elsewhere. read more

I am quite surprised at these negative reviews. I have visited a friend in Beaufort the past two winters and going to GDC has been the highlight of our charleston shopping experience....the selections are great and the service was quite good. But my most recent encounter is what prompted me to write. We are building a new home in New England and I have been shopping for fabric and home decor wherever I travel. In February I purchased fabric to recover some outdoor cushions. Found some great Sunbrella at the Mount Pleasant store, but of course, I didn't buy enough. Talked to Amanda and she not only found the fabric quickly, she honored the price I had originally paid, and it was shipped that afternoon and my upholsterer will have it this week. Amanda was so delightful to work with that I went ahead and ordered 35 pillow inserts from GDC that I could have gotten locally. I love this store and its great selections....it should not be missed. read more
