I recently experienced some sharp pain of unknown origin in my left foot while walking. it would come and go intermittently, especially when I was walking on the indoor track at the gym I belong to. I decided to see a Podiatrist, hoping I might learn the cause of this pain. Unfortunately, the doctor's examination couldn't positively identify the cause. He suggested that I try different walking shoes and/or some support shoe inserts. He gave me a list of some sport shoe retailers in the Twin Cities. I spent some time online checking out the list. One of the retailers listed was Gear Running Store. I was impressed with their website and decided to give them a call. I spoke to Maggie (a co-owner) and told her my story. She offered some suggestions and also invited me to visit her at the store. I took her up on her invitation and stopped by the next day. She was very generous with her time and gave me her undivided attention. She had me try out several different types of shoe inserts and also several different brands and types of shoes, all in an effort to find a possible solution to my mysterious foot pain problem. We were able to narrow the field down to a pair of Altra running/walking shoes that I tried out in the store. She then suggested that I also try them out for a few days on the track at my gym for a few days. Then, if they don't work out for any reason, I can return them for a refund. So, I tried them out at the track three times (I was careful to only wear the shoes while on the track). After the trial, I found that theses shoes were comfortable in some respects but they really didn't have any more impact on reducing the foot "pain" than my regular shoes did. So, I brought them back to the store (along with the original box and packing material) and turned them in to Paul (store owner). He was very pleasant and accommodating and promptly refunded my purchase. So, in the end, while these folks didn't make a sale in this case, they did gain a very appreciative customer who values great service from true professionals. I know where to find them when I'm in need of new shoes in the future. I will also be happy to recommend them to my family and friends. Thank you Maggie and Paul! David R. This store has always been great! Great staff and selection. Then there was this time that they saved my race! It was about 2 weeks before the TC 10 mile and I was getting those pains in my body that signal that you need new shoes...I went and got a pair of shoes from another store but changed models (bad call) and got a 2 mile run in to discover that was a BAD idea. SO its a week and a half before the race I had trained for what felt like forever and the original store didn't have the shoes I needed in stock and shipping was going to push me to way too close to the race. So its 7:45 and I'm calling the store asking if they have the shoe they say yes. I tell them I am on my way and they stay on the phone with me talking about the color options of the shoe and assure me they will stay open for me (thankfully I was only a mile away in a car). I get to the store and they had the shoes ready for me to pick the color and try on...tried them on and they fit, we were good! They were so nice as well! Not that attitude that I might have delayed their close...genuinely awesome people! Hands down I would recommend this store to any runner in the cities! read more

This is a fantastic store. They are so helpful in picking the right running shoe no matter what skill level you are. I am what you call a pansy. I started running a year ago and I hit an unimpressive 3 miles and started getting awful shin splints. Then I threw in the towel after not being able to walk for a week. Whenever something hurts, I quit. Just like softball. I was playing in little league and saw another girl, not even myself, get hit in the face and I threw in the towel. I decided to start running again and was struggling at 1 mile. A coworker who is a serial marathon runner sang praises for this store. I am so glad I went!!! I realized what a scrub I was about running - I ran in the wrong shoes and had them for too long. Who knew shoes had mileage on them too? The guy (didn't catch his name) that worked there was super helpful. He examined the shape of my foot, my knee bend, and weight distribution. After that, he brought out 5 pairs of shoes and had me try them on. They encourage you to take a test drive and run outside in them to get a feel. When I ran around the block a bit, I found out that I apparently run completely wrong. After selecting the right shoe, the guy even humored me with my color preferences for shoes. While I was agonizing over what color shoe I wanted until my snobby friend reminded me of my "first world problems". The shoes that look like strawberry lemonade please! Off I go armed with his helpful tips and shoe recommendations determined to run. The prices are at retail value so you can expect to pay more than your regular corporate chain but the knowledge is well worth it... not to mention supporting a local business! I took a run in my new shoes and doubled my miles to a whopping 2 miles with no struggle. If only they can make running less boring.... read more

This store is THE best. The BEST. I was a mediocre but happy high school athlete, and then I ran periodically in college and into my grownzup life. But after running more regularly this summer and fall, my knees started to bum me out. I experimented with different stride styles, and after deciding to try out a midfoot stride, I went to Gear Running to get suited up with some sweet new shoes. (They specialize in midfoot/forefoot/barefoot running, so if you're interested in that, Gear is your spot.) I was incredibly impressed with how knowledgeable and patient everyone in the store was. They listened to all of my thoughts and issues, and recommended a few great pairs of shoes to me, including the pricey but awesome Newtons. They let you jog around outside in the shoes, which totally rocked--you just can't get the feeling of a shoe from jogging 3 steps in a store aisle. Once I settled on the Newtons, the owner, Paul, answered all my questions about exercises to do and things to look out for in these shoes, AND he took me outside to give me a mini-clinic in how to run in them and watch my stride to make sure I was doing it right. (I totally nailed it for a newbie. #humblebrag) But it gets even better! Their return policy is fabulous (not sure if it's just for the Newtons, or for all shoes), so I can now, post-purchase, try out my investment kicks for a while at home to make sure that I like them. Knowing that I can really give these shoes a run for their money (har har) before I have to make the final big-bucks commitment is a huge mental relief. I haven't had such a solid retail experience in a very long time--amazing service and total integrity. I only kinda feel good about spending that much money overall... I definitely feel good about spending that much money at Gear. read more

I usually feel a little apprehensive walking into running stores, since I'm fairly new to running...but I felt completely comfortable at Gear, entirely due to the wonderful staff. No matter what level of running knowledge/experience you have, they're happy to share their expertise and help you find the best shoe & fit for YOU...no upselling or pressure at all. We went in looking for a specific shoe but walked out with a different brand that actually had a better fit and was on sale! Side note -- Not only do these guys know a ton about running shoes, but they were even happy to recommend casual & dress shoes that offered proper foot support. (Back story: My boyfriend is an avid Brooks wearer and always complains that non-running shoes are so uncomfortable. I'll be the first to tell you - I don't know anything about running shoes. Wait, I do. I wear them on my feet. I went into Gear on a Saturday morning to buy some new shoes for running and Orange Theory. I walked in with no expectations. I was immediately greeted by an associate who asked what I needed (shoes) and the experience started there. He walked me over to the shoes and started asking questions about things I didn't think about - how do you run, are you a heel or toe runner, etc, etc - I am sure I'm butchering the verbiage. Long story short, he fit me into some awesome shoes. The experience at this store is pressure free. The shoes I purchased have helped immensely. The former me purchased shoes off the rack and I had shin splints. I was immediately splint free. Sarah forgot socks last weekend when we were going running at Harriet - we ran over to Gear. They also know a lot about running socks. If you are in the market for running shoes and know what you want, go here. If you are in the market for running shoes and have no idea what you are looking for, then you should definitely go to Gear. After reading mediocre reviews of the running room, I decided to check out Gear Running store for my footwear needs. I had been running without proper footwear for a while, and it was starting to cause pain in my knees. The helpful guy at Gear Running store took a look at the position of my feet while I walked and suggested the type of shoe I would need for sufficient support. I decided on a pair and left very happy. I wish I remembered the guy's name there, but he was informative on the type of shoes and seemed to have genuine concern for his customer's needs. I've bounced between here and Marathon Sports for my running needs. The past year I've come to Gear due to switching over to Newton shoes. The staff here are super helpful and very friendly. You can tell they're honest and love to share their knowledge. My partner both run in Newton's now, but we never felt pressured to make the switch and investment. We go try the shoes around the block, compare them to other brands with similar models. We recently returned here for our needed 2nd pair and again were informed of updates and were offered to try other brands or last year's models still in stock. The staff even remembered us from our previous visit when I bought some shoes for an upcoming trip. In general, most runners will tell you this a stand up place to come. If you're a new runner and/or taking your running to the next level ( or decide you'd like some helpful info beyond the Running Room or a random person at Dick's), this is a good stop for you to figure your needs. Members in various running clubs receive a discount. Street parking is easy around here. It's a small door b/t Brueggers and a barber shop so keep your eyes alert to find the door. read more

I've not really considered myself a 'runner' until the last several months. I finally decided to register for a half marathon, and realized I was in desperate need of a new pair of running shoes. I've had a number of issues with my feet, knees and hips, and wanted to make sure I bought the right kind of shoes to avoid injury, but I had no idea what that really meant, as I'd previously bought athletic shoes based mostly on price and style. The thought of going to a running-focused store intimidated me a little ... but Gear Running Store seemed very welcoming to a novice runner, and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The woman who helped me offered fantastic customer service. She examined how I stood on my feet and watched my stride, brought a bunch of shoes for me to try out, and gave great advice on fit, lacing, etc. She also helped me find a pair of running tights appropriate for colder weather, because I was totally clueless how to choose. It's not a big store, but they have a good selection and were willing to order items if they weren't in stock. I will definitely re-visit this store when I'm back in the Twin Cities. I just bought my first pair of running shoes ever, and I couldn't be happier. After watching my stride and hearing about my goals, David Loken selected several shoes of various brands for me to try on. I eventually found a very comfortable shoe at a reasonable price. But as much as I like the shoe, I liked the overall experience just as much. David is more than patient. He is passionate and knowledgeable about running. He didn't try to pressure me in any way, and didn't come across as a sales person who needed to hit a certain quota. I would definitely go back to this store. read more

As I train for my first marathon, I needed a new pair of shoes and was looking for some insight. As I entered the store I was quickly greeted by three staff members working. They were incredible, all of them assisted me in this process (I was the only person in the store)! Not only did they help me find the shoes they also shared their own stories. We also discussed training plans, diet and the marathon course. This group definitely knows what they are talking about when it comes to shoes AND running. I ended up buying two pairs of shoes and a pair of socks, but there was no pressure to even but one pair. I've had limited experience with Gear, but the few times I've gone in, I've been very impressed with them. This is a small store, so I was very doubtful they would be able to accommodate my large (usually size 12 women) feet on my whim. The shoe model I've been wearing for the last 7 years has changed enough that I needed input on a new shoe, so I decided to give Gear a shot at the last minute. The sales guy knew my shoe (it's very popular, so I'd be pretty skeptical if he didn't, actually) and suggested other shoes for my stability needs. He was able to bring out 3 shoes in a women's size 11 or 12 that he thought my foot structure needed. I have NEVER been to a running store that has such a good supply of women's large shoes. Although I didn't buy anything yesterday, I was really happy with the guy's knowledge of shoes, attention to what I needed and was saying, and the store's selection. Also, they really care about their customers' endeavors. The first time I came to Gear was the day before I had to do my 20-mile run for the 2009 TC Marathon. I was in desperate need of a short that didn't chafe me or ride up, and the woman who helped me pointed me toward triathlon shorts. Who'd have thought? The rubbery grip on the leg helped keep them in place and they were tight around the leg so there was no possibility in chafing. She said it was a new short to their store and she asked me to tell her how my run went. I stopped by a week or so later since I was in the neighborhood and she was very sincerely thrilled about the shorts and my wonderful run. This attitude alone is why I've returned whenever I've needed anything specialized or specific in the last several years. read more

There was no pressure shopping and a clear sense that they wanted to find the shoe that was perfect for your needs. In order to celebrate my upcoming birthday with my twin, I agreed to partake in the San Francisco marathon. As a result, I was in dire need of some new running shoes... At first, I was lazy and sprung for a pair of shoes via Amazon.com. However, I was sorely disappointed when they arrived and decided it was time to partake in a local shop. After searching for a nearby Brooks dealer online, Gear Running Store came up as a top match. I then dropped the staff a quick phone call to inquire about the availability of a specific shoe. The associate was kind, helpful, and quick to provide me answers. I ended up reserving a couple of items and arrived 20 minutes later to complete my purchase. After 30 years since the last time I did any real running, I started running again almost by accident. After a week of ad hoc running, I decided I need a serious pair of shoes and expert advice on form and footwear so as to head off any injuries due to improper form and equipment. I went to Gear Running based on the great reviews they got and am happy to confirm here that they do offer excellent service. The staff were indeed friendly and very helpful. I explained my situation to Joe and he looked at my feet and the wear pattern on my old sneakers and pulled out about eight pairs for me to try out. The store lets you try out running with the shoes on the sidewalk and Joe gladly observed my gait when I asked him to check my form for any bad habits. The shoe that worked best for me turned out to be the cheapest pair I tried out. Last year's model at half price. Joe made no attempt at all to steer me towards a higher priced shoe. This store is a throwback from the era when shops offered real service as a matter of course. I wanted to buy more stuff just to shoe my appreciation but I only need one pair of shoes at a time and I don't want to wear real running shorts or shirts for fear that I might be accused of trying to pass myself off as a real athlete. So I'll just be a big Gear Running Store cheerleader for now until I need a new pair of running shoes. Buy your running stuff here. This store deserves all five stars. read more

This was my first experience purchasing a serious running shoe and the staff was very helpful and welcoming. They took the time to examine my foot, posture, load balance during movement and stride. They explained all of the nuances between the primary shoe styles and helped me to make a very informed decision. They let me try on numerous shoes and test them out prior to making the sale. I was in town for the Lucky 7 Half Marathon but United lost my bag so I was missing all of my running stuff. With no hope of United getting my bag to me on time, I went to Gear to kit up. All I had was the clothes on my back, literally. It's a small store, and you have to be on the lookout or you might miss it driving by. Gear isn't one of the big stores with the treadmills and other fancy things inside, but they don't mind you taking the shoes for a run around the block. Gear had everything I needed, and Paul (the owner) gave me a nice discount, mostly because they had a special for the Lucky 7. I ended up with two pairs of shoes, compression tights, the new Garmin 410, Tifosi sunglasses, and some green socks for the run, all the while chatting with Paul about different runs. I didn't feel too bad about buying so much because I'd planned to buy most of that soon anyway. I was plenty happy to spend my money in Minnesota instead of tax-happy Chicago. The staff are very friendly and there's no pressure to buy anything. Paul didn't try to push anything on me even though it was apparent I needed to get everything. When I'm back in town for the other Team Ortho races, I'm going to stop buy Gear for anything that I need. read more

This is an excellent store. The staff is very helpful and patient. When I walked in the first time there were a couple of customers sitting in the fitting area with a couple of employees helping them. The employees were on the floor in the middle of a pile of shoes, laughing and talking to the customers as they tried on multiple pairs to get to the right ones. It was a rare scene in customer service, and only seemed to get better as they got busier. The tiny store was packed with people and the employees really seemed to enjoy making each customer feel like they were getting the full attention they needed, I know I did. I will recommend this store to anyone I know looking not just for shoes and apparel, but the kind of personal, knowledgeable service that is increasingly hard to find anywhere anymore. read more
