I can't say enough about how excellent my experience was at Gearhead Tattoo. I want to specifically mention Todd who was my artist. When hubby and I moved permanently to the Cape, we were looking for a good tattoo artist. I asked everyone whom I encountered (who had a tatt that I liked) who did the artwork and they all said Todd at Gearhead Tattoo. Fast forward to now. Hubby and I decided to get tattoos. He pieced together something that he wanted and I knew I wanted a Shiva tattoo. I scoured the internet for an example and found one that was in the line of what I wanted but probably could never be recreated because of the poor photography. We go to GHT and Todd listens to what we want. He tells me not to worry, he'll find one like it by the time we come back for our tatts. Hubby keeps rattling on about what he wants while showing Todd his makeshift artwork. Todd is listening politely while doodling on his IPad. I'm thinking this guy isn't really listening, then voila! He turns the IPad around and shows my husband what he sketched and my husband was stunned. It was exactly what he had envisioned. Two weeks later, we go in for the tatts and Todd shows me the Shiva that he found and enhanced and I was blown away. I also thought this will never look the same on my arm -- it's just too colorful and detailed. Well it is the most beautiful tattoo I've every seen and have ever gotten. Seriously, I can't stop looking at it. He even acquiesced to the orientation that I wanted which is Shiva's head toward my wrist so I can look at him. He spent every bit of 3 hours working intently on this art. During the whole time, we talked, joked and I just had a great time. Todd worked on every piece of detail while keeping me entertained for 3 hours. This is not easy but he is gifted not only in art, but in making the client relax and feel comfortable. I was so pleased that I'm going back for another in a month. As for hubby, the tattoo is exactly the vision my husband had and he is extremely pleased. He is now thinking of adding to it. The discussion of aftercare was complete and is also referenced on their website. In addition, unlike my previous, smaller tattoos, this did not scab because of the new type of bandage they use. I decided to go through Todd for my first ever tattoo. Being that I was a little nervous on how the process was he was very attentive to the style of my tattoo and every detail that I wanted to alter or have he was very open to discussion and the design. Todd took it upon himself to inform and assure that he will make this tattoo exactly how I would like it. During the process to get through the discomfort I discussed a number of various topics with Todd to which he seemed to be interested in. We joked, laughed, sang Metallica songs, this was a great experience. For the final product being Saint Anthony AND it being my first tattoo, Todd is now the artist I plan on going to from now on for as long as he's still within the area. I ran into a problem with a piercing I had done at a shop that has closed. I called Gearhead and they were kind enough to let me come in and Mat worked 15 or 20 minutes to help me get straightened out. The shop looked and smelled very clean. My husband designed a tattoo for our daughter for her birthday and we took her here. They were able to tweak the design keeping the integrity of his sentiment in the design. I went to Gearhead tattoo earlier in the week to get a quote and see some work by the artists. I was greeted by one of the artists named Todd. I had the basis of the tattoo I wanted already but Todd turned it into a true piece of art. All the employees are really friendly and knowledgeable. Worst tattoo shop experience, and I didn't even get tattooed. Thank God! Set up an appointment w/ Kelly 3 weeks ago. Went in the shop today and he is "on vacation". 3 artists sitting in the shop doing absolutely nothing said "he didn't have my contact information" which is bullshit because I saw him write my number down in his appt. book. The 3 could have cared less that I had my whole day planned around the tattoo. Apparently my time isn't as important as a premadonna tattoo artist's time. When I made the appt. I also asked about a small tattoo on my hand, he asked what I wanted to get and before I could answer him he tells me he doesn't do hand tattoos. I have been saving for my tattoo explosion for several years. Not only was i saving the cash but also designing what i wanted. I had the ideas drawn out for a ling time. Finally, it was time when i could start getting them. I did my research, in advance as these are very important, like any other surgery. The net helped me narrow out the good, the bad, and the ugly. Then as i went into the top 3 shops remaining in SWFL to see first hand, there is another important variable to consider. The measure of an artist. Each artist has a natural flair for their area of expertise. However, at GearHead, the artist dont stay only in that box. Meaning that they DONT try to persuade you to change your vision to theirs. Instead my Artist at GearHead, spent time with me drawing up the concepts and taking my drawings, capturing what i wanted and takingit to an enhanced level. This factor is Huge! That was almost 5 months ago. Now i am on my way back today for my 4th tattoo since that time. The artist at GearHead are even accessible through email to where i can send ideas and schemes in advance so when i go in, i go in with confidence. It not just a tattoo your getting if your serious about your pieces. Its more of a relationship. The tattoo is just a reflection of that relationship. I wont go anywhere else. Gearhead is well known as the place to go to get pierced. I've had two piercings from them and they're not the cheapest place around. Got my nose pierced and had to return 3 times to get a new piece of jewelry because the gems kept falling out. As for tattoos- When I asked around about them, no one ever says "geahead is horrid" but no-one ever recommends them either. I have gotten one tattoo from them- a small paw print and I did not have a good experience. I was a walk in one night and there was only one artist there but he took me. I had the copy of my recently passed dog's print and new exactly what/where I wanted it. (I am a heavily tattooed young woman but all of my tattoos were covered by my clothes) He was so rude and honestly just treated my like he didn't give a shit about what he was about to put on me. He continually insulted what I was getting/size/placement. After he found out I was heavily tattooed his attitude totally changed and I was his new best friend. It was weird to me that he treated me so poorly when he thought I was inexperienced. Artists should be nicest to clients whose first time it is- not rude and insensitive. Also the tattoo was just poor quality- it was a very simple tattoo but he did it sooooo quickly. It was also by far the longest healing tattoo I have ever gotten. It turned out faded and blotchy when it finally did heal. He told me his tattoos were guaranteed for life and that if I ever needed a touch up he'd do it for free- honestly I went to someone else and paid for them to fix it rather than go back to him. *Sorry do not remember the artists name read more

Got a double helix piercing here almost two years ago, and they never healed. I was assured the metal was high quality and Matt told me if there were any issues to call or come back and he would help me. Despite my diligence with cleaning and protecting them, my piercings were pretty angry and were almost always irritated (pain, burning, bleeding, bumps) for the duration of having these studs. When I called the shop to talk to Matt about my concerns with healing he was condescending and brushed me off twice, saying I must not be cleaning them correctly (I'm a nurse). It finally clicked that it could be the metal that was causing my issues. With that, I went to a different shop and had them exchanged for titanium hoops. Sure enough, the original stud metal was cloudy and the studs were externally threaded. Since changing them to titanium hoops I haven't had any pain or issues since and they're well on their way to being healed. I didn't have a great experience here, and after the fact the customer support was seriously lacking. read more
