These were fried yeast dough puffs covered in granulated sugar and with a squirt of filling in the top middle of the dough. It's not exactly a donut by American standards, but it's not far off. We tried the chocolate and the pistachio flavor filled ones, though they had a vanilla cream flavor and one or two others. The flavored fillings were almost like a wet pudding consistency and the sugar on the outside of the dough gave it it's sweetness. Bottom line: Glad I tried Krapfen! Sure enough, it was a Gelateria. We went into the tiny shop, barely enough room for a few customers, and got a tasting each of a couple of flavors. I settled on my go to flavors of lemon and banana, which in account of them bring fruit, all gelaterias have as sorbets. My husband got his two usuals, pistachio and caramel, both gelatos. While I wouldn't write home about either the quality of the sorbets or about the customer service, both aspects are solid, and I have nothing to complain about. The prices are competitive with everyone else in the area. We got our gelato sand took it across the square, teeming with life and people, sat in the church steps in the shade--a welcome respite and our own little makeshift impromptu siesta:-)
