Venchi began as a small chocolatier founded in Turin in 1878 by Silviano Venchi using premium Piedmont hazelnuts and dark chocolate. They are known for their chocolates first and then gelatos. The employees were kind and provided great service/recommendations. The lady taking the order mentioned that if I signed up for their app I get a free chocolate. I like chocolate ok, but the hubby LOVES chocolate, let alone for free. I'm glad to get a little bit of Italian goodies prior to saying bye to Rome, definitely a great spot for gelato and chocolate as an arrivederci. got a regular-sized strawberry chocolate milkshake and this is the size of mcdonald's water cup... and it was 9 euros?! crazy work. was it yummy? Yes. But, most of the cup was whipped cream that did not even have a drizzle of syrup on top, which was a very cheap way of making the drink :/ the staff seemed pretentious. maybe because I am not from the area and it is my first time being here, but have some grace please when I ask about flavors and size discrepancies :( I was so excited to try to this place, but the staffing threw it off for me because usually they are welcoming as a spot like this is anyone's happy place! but omg... the store was so beautiful with the bright-colored wrappers and the sweet smell of chocolate. The store just looked so expensive with the golden cursive as the backdrop for the cashier register area...and then the dripping chocolate fountain was unlike any sweets store that I have seen! chocolates were expensive, but expected. I agree with everybody else's reviews here that this is the best way to say goodbye To Rome. Cannot leave Italy without having a cone of gelato. The gelato here and the chocolate is so delicious and mouthwatering. I'm still thinking about it to this day. The staff is also very friendly and just having that last bit of chocolate top of your gelato, just makes everything more sentimental. Definitely a must do when at the airport. Even if you're using Rome as a layover, you feel like you're still in Italy. The ambience here is something not to miss. you're surrounded by chocolate! read more

I am so happy to have found a great gelato place at the airport as my last "meal" in Roma. Venchi is a chocolate shop, but their non-chocolate gelato flavors are quite good. Right now, their mascarpone and caramelized fig gelato is one of my favorite flavors. My second and third favorite flavors are their strawberry and melon, ubiquitous summer flavors among many gelato shops, but very good here. Ordering the gelato is a little chaotic, depending on how many people or tour groups are present. First, you line up to pay for the cone or cup, then you line up a second time to get the specific scoops. Don't get in the wrong line, especially if there are confused tourists ahead of you who are just as pazzi (Italian word for "crazy") about gelato as you are. read more

When we were at the airport, we had some time and my husband wanted one more gelato before we left for the States so we stopped by. Below is my quick assessment: Gelato: It was creamy, decadent, and good but we have had better while touring Italy. It's definitely commercialized and doesn't have that fresh flavor bursting through. Chocolates: We saw the chocolates on display and decided to bring some home as gifts. They were a huge hit! Not overly sweet but packed with savory hazelnut and coffee bits, their chocolates would satisfy any chocolate craving. Each morsel was creamy and smooth... Solid but not really mind-blowing...worth it if you're a tourist leaving Italy though and want your final fix of gelato! That was definitely me. The price here is on the high side (I paid €3.70 for the smallest size, 2 flavors), but what else do you expect at an airport, right? I read a couple of the other reviews and also agree that the service here is not great. It's pretty slow and at least when I visited, it seemed almost like the lady at the counter was reluctant to help me. I got the tiramisu flavor as well as the orange & passion fruit flavor (a new one apparently!). Both were pretty good! I'm probably just a sucker for anything tiramisu but that one was definitely my preferred one out of the two. The fruit one was decent but a bit too tart for me. Texture of both flavors was great though--very creamy but also light. Overall, solid place if (like me) you just crave one last gelato in Italy and your gate is a few steps away, but if I had more reasonably priced + friendlier options then I'd go elsewhere. There are definitely better spots in the city offering more bang for your buck and gelato just as good if not better! read more

I ended up stopping at Venchi on Friday before catching my flight back to Toronto. This place offers a bunch of different pastries and gelato options to make you feel better before sitting on a plane for 10 hours. The layout is kind of confusing as you actually pay before going to the gelato case, which meant I stood in front of the gelato for 5 minutes before the guy told me where to go. Once I paid and went back to the case I ended up the cookies and milk gelato which was extremely good and definitely better then what I expected to get at the airport. I'm giving Venchi 3 stars based on the lack of service and confusing setup, but the actual gelato was pretty darn good. read more

In my layover at the Italy Airport, I came across Venchi and got some gourmet chocolate and chocolate Easter eggs. Their Chocolate was very delicious with strong cocoa favor. There was a long line for gelato but I did not try it. The line was about 10-15 mins long. If I come across Venchi in New York then I would like to try again. Every bad review here is based on the service. The gelato itself is AMAZING. Like I'm talking mouth-watering, I want this forever, the perfect combo kind of amazing. And as far as the service, I actually had a wonderful experience here. I tried the hazelnut and the fresh milk. They were both equally so good that I couldn't pick which one was better if my life depended on it. Out of all the gelato spots I visited in Italy, this one blew every other spot out of the water. Yes, this is another review for my favorite Italian gelato store. This was my last visit to Venchi before leaving Italy. So delicious. You must eat this gelato. So to order: First get in the line to pay. Then take your receipt and get in the line to get the gelato. Two lines. This is true for all Italian takeaway or to go. First you pay. It's decent gelato, I'll give them that. However, unless you speak Italian or know that you're supposed to pay before you even get to the counter, good luck. We stood in line, the lady we were supposed to pay (we didn't know) didn't look at nor acknowledge us (hence the confusion). It wasn't until we got to the front (where they serve you) that we were told what to do. We've been to many gelato shops in Venice, Florence and Rome. This was the first that made us do this. Then they gave us the choice of either cutting or going to the back of the line (this resulted in a mini conflict with someone who was unnecessarily rude). My rating is based on their service, or lack thereof. There were three people working: one serving the gelato, one serving people buying candies and sweets, and one unpacking supplies. Customers were supposed to pay in advance for gelato and give receipts to the person serving gelato. The person serving those buying sweets referred those wanting just gelato to another register which was unattended. However, the individual serving the buyers of their sweets would sell gelato to those who also bought sweets. Those customers proceeded to get their gelato while the ones wanting just gelato waited at the unattended register. I complained without results and left. I'd give a lower rating if it was possible. read more

Italian Gelato is such a great treat. You have not tasted real ice cream until this is swirling in your mouth. What is great about this is that you get to taste gelato one last time before you head out of Rome. They offer a whole range of flavors so its really up tp you to choose. The selections of chocolate here for some last minute shopping for family and friends is incredible, but pricey. Ordered my last gelato before saying goodbye to Rome here never disappoints. The taste are so authentic and though they are commercialised with so many chains, they don't use colourings. Their fruity flavours, pistachio or chocolate is un-complainable. The staffs were really friendly and when I asked for chocolate at the bottom of the cone, she explained to me that chocolate is very light and therefore has to be at the top, and offered extra chocolate for me. whee!! I know this might be the only gelato place if you're flying out of terminal 1 D concourse. But DON'T GO. I chose 4.6 euro small cup for 3 flavors. They only fill 3/4 of a super small cup!!!! I didn't have my phone with me so I didn't take a pic. Like with less than 10 super small scoops I finished it. I asked the girl behind the counter who filled the cup: is this how much ice cream I'm getting? She gave me super bitchy look.
