I later referred someone close to me to her,…read moreand she now works with that person in both a therapeutic capacity and, as I understand it, an executive-coaching capacity. My concern is not that a therapist formed an opinion I disliked. It is the quality of the reasoning and the apparent lack of professional boundaries surrounding it. In discussing me--someone who has not been her client for years--attention was directed toward my menstrual cycle, hormones, medications, birth control, and cannabis use as possible explanations for my behavior and reactions. I found that remarkably reductive and inconsistent with the level of objectivity I would expect from a mental-health professional. There is a significant difference between thoughtful clinical inquiry and reflexively medicalizing or hormonalizing a woman's response to events. The latter is not sophisticated analysis simply because it occurs in a therapist's office. The combination of prior therapeutic relationships, current therapy, and executive coaching also left me with serious questions about role clarity and professional judgment. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Dr. Groff.
