First, the staff attempted to take my 4-year-old son back to the exam room without me present. For a minor child, separation from a parent during care is not standard practice and violates basic expectations of transparency and parental involvement. There was no medical or behavioral justification offered. During the visit, a fluoride treatment was administered to my son without my informed consent. I was never told this procedure would be performed, no risks or alternatives were explained, and I was not asked to authorize or decline it. In Michigan, licensed health professionals are required to obtain prior, voluntary, informed consent for non-emergency procedures, especially when treating minor children. Dental providers operate under the same principles and ethical obligations recognized by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and the Michigan Board of Dentistry. When I calmly questioned why a procedure had been performed on my child without consent, the staff became defensive. Rather than address the issue or follow professional protocol, the office refused to provide my own scheduled appointment, which appeared retaliatory and contrary to the professional conduct standards expected of licensed dental practices. I also requested appropriate documentation, including an incident report. I was denied. I was only given a brief patient-note printout, with portions that appeared cut off or omitted, which further undermines transparency. Michigan providers are expected to maintain accurate, complete patient records and provide them upon request. For the sake of clarity: - I remained calm, professional, and respectful throughout the encounter. - I simply asked why consent was bypassed and requested the documentation I am legally permitted to receive. - The office's actions following that request were unprofessional and inconsistent with Michigan's expectations of provider conduct, patient rights, and the standard of care. Given the number of similar concerns found in other reviews, I want to note that any response from Sandra should be read with caution. In my experience, the office's narrative often diverges from what actually occurred. Parents deserve to know when a provider fails to follow informed-consent law, professional ethical standards, and basic transparency requirements. My experience today raises legitimate concerns that I believe warrant the attention of the Michigan dental licensing authorities.

Update, following Dr. Skiba's responses:…read more I have now seen the new dentist a second time, for a regular cleaning and exam, including x-rays. I still don't have a cavity in the tooth that Dr. Skiba said that I did, which she said I had to get filled right away or I'd need a root canal. My child, who supposedly had a cavity in the baby tooth, doesn't have a cavity according to the exam by new dentist either. If I come in to a new dentist saying that both my child and I were told we have cavities, a dishonest dentist could just confirm that we do, take our money and run. And yet neither of us has a cavity, despite that Dr. Skiba said otherwise. I'll let that fact stand for itself. As for the number of root canals and crowns my husband had, I know it was a lot because we exceeded the maximum amount our insurance would cover in a year. In one case, she started drilling a cavity and halfway through, she said he needed a root canal and pressured him to fill out a Care Credit application on the spot to finance it. We definitely could not afford it, but as he said, how can you really say no when you're in such a vulnerable position? Since writing the initial review, I have heard from other former patients of hers who also feel that she does unnecessary work. Beware...

I see that other reviews made mention of concern for excessive work needed. Neither I nor my husband have ever had a cavity, and no work was recommended at our recent cleanings. My older child does have a cavity in a molar, her first-- I was a bit surprised, but I borrowed the dental pick from the hygienist after, and checked it myself-- sure enough, there was a "sticky" pit-- no argument; that's a cavity so we will have it taken care of. I also commend the office for having a great little children's cove in the waiting room as my kids enjoyed that. It's worth pointing out that some things are subjective in regards to our health-- one dentist might point out and intervene on early cavities, another may watch and wait. Just like two doctors may look at the same kid's painful ear and one call it an ear infection and offer antibiotics, while the other says it's ok to watch and wait. When you have concerns, your health professionals are open to hearing them, and I feel welcome to share concerns (if I had them) with Dr. Skiba.

Let me just say I had a terrible experience at a "dentist" from across the street and I hated going to get checkups even afterwards. My dad's dentist was retiring and referred him to Dr. Lang, so my family decided to give him a shot. Well I am SO glad we did! I no longer fear going to the dentist anymore when I see him and Debbie and everyone at the office! Took me a few visits but now I can say I do not have anxiety about getting looked at. The office is decorated nicely, they offer videos and music while you're getting worked on and best of all they treat you like a human, not a giant dollar sign with a mouth on you. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Lang and his staff. Gentle hands and gentle hearts. Switch today--you will NOT regret it!
