If you are a man of mature years and rather tired of having hung-over twenty-something girls try and cut your hair, this is the place for you. I was once a regular, but was inconvenient for the City unless one could factor in lunch at the Mirabelle opposite, which put the price up somewhat. Having been butchered once too often, I ventured back again and was treated to a timeless experience - a full cut-throat razor shave and a classic haircut with lots of 'I think I can manage to get it back into shape' from a sound chap with a steady hand. In response to my query 'should I be putting anything on my hair', the admirable fellow said ' nothing at all, sir', despite the shop being full of expensive ungents for just that purpose. The front of the shop has a beautiful 18th century facade (it's been going since 1875) and inside there's a counter laden with 'men's toiletries' of great style and no little expense and the smell of eau-de-cologne and bay rum hang in the air. I left feeling refreshed and pleased that it was still possible to find a hairdresser that does not expect to chat about their last holiday and doesn't play the cashier's favourite awful music at high volume while trying to give you a 'footballers' haircut'. read more

For Americans, I wouldn't recommend buying any products in the shop due to exchange rate. It's cheaper ordering online through C.O. Bigelow back in the states. I really, really wanted this to be a life affirming, or even life changing experience. Without trying to invalidate Tom B's experience, mine was average and certainly not worth the price of the service. Walked in for a shave. They didn't have an opening so I made an appointment for later that afternoon. Upon returning, I sat down. I waited. After about eight minutes, I was invited to the barber's chair for my shave. The lady was nice (for some reason, movies perhaps, I was wanting an older gentlemen to shave my face...) and we chatted about my work and time in London. I was expecting the shave to be super close, relaxing, and my skin to shout and dance and sing. It was more of a meh than anything else, except when I walked over to the register and handed over my precious pounds, it became a "never again." read more

In particular the 'limes', 'coconut' and 'violet' are highly regarded amongst connoisseurs. Don't be afraid to ask for samples as they are produced in small twist cap pots and available at the store clerks' discretion. I visited the Curzon Street store this past Thursday to purchase a bottle of cologne, and the service was truly as good as it gets. The sales assistant - Marcus - was happy to indulge me as I sampled every fragrance in the collection, not to mention that he was extremely knowledgeable regarding the fragrances' notes and the history behind their creation. He and I shared a lovely conversation, and I was even given a pack of cologne and body wash samples to go with my purchase. Aside from the wonderful selection of products - the fragrances are unusually bright and refreshing, particularly Skye - the store's Edwardian aesthetic is gorgeous, but the service is what shines the most. It's lovely to find a purveyor of luxury goods and services that treats guests with the utmost respect and shows no snobbery or condescension whatsoever. Went for a beard trim (with high hopes - heard great things about the place), now I have to hide my face for a few months. I couldn't have been more explicit with how I wanted it - and summarized my *main* point about 'keep as much length as possible, I just want it neater' right before he put a wet towel over my eyes. Once I could see again, horror awaited me in the mirror. I had a long, beautiful beard - the pride of my tribe - and it had been reduced to a sad adolescent's excuse of facial hair. I feel neutered. The man was in a bit of a rush too, once I asked him to make some corrections (to try to save what little was left of my facial dignity) his courteous manner was quickly replaced by a brisk 'get out of my chair I have another customer coming' attitude. Apparently this place is known for its wet shaves - I can't speak to that but after this experience I don't think I'll be going back for any service. I've been getting beard trims for a while now, and have had good and bad. This was by far the worst, I'm genuinely sad about how my beard looks now. It's not just *short*, I could live with that, it's honestly a horrible cut, like a child was let loose with scissors on my face. read more

I have been a client here for more than 20 years. I have always been happy with my haircuts. Recently they increased their prices significantly and despite several comments asking them to review this. £32 for a gents wash and haircut is a lot, but going up by £4 to £36 is a big jump. My first experience wit them was very good, probably as mentioned that im looking for a proper barber in London. Next time when i was there, the barber was constantly asking how i want it to be cut, althought i just want to be in hands of professional and not q&a mode. The head was washed only when i asked to that made it a bit of a surprise for barber. Plus the cut itself finally wasnt to the expectation. I have been using Geo F Trumper products for about 2 years and I absolutely love them. A couple of weeks ago I decided to have an haircut in the St Jame's Shop and I was deeply disappointed unfortunately. The haircut was just OK and regarding the service I have definitely experienced better. Further more £38 for a gents wash and haircut is a lot of money and in my opinion it's not worth it. I've experienced better service and haircut for less than half the price. Not a very happy customer and cannot possibly recommend it! read more

Very pleasant old fashioned barbers shop in the heart of Mayfair (very convienient for the office). Chatty and friendly and were very understanding when I realised I had left my wallet in the aformentioned office ! Not cheap, but with most things in life, you get what you pay for. read more

i had high hopes on this one, thinking i'd get a relaxing and professional experience but i'm afraid it was far from it. for starters, this is a barber shop for men, why then are there almost only women working there? of course gender has little to do with shaving skills, but how can you talk of these things with a woman who never shaves her face? it's like having men selling women lingerie, it can be done but the seller will have no first hand knowledge of the product. even if he wears them you would have to be a woman to fully understand all the requirements, just as you have to be a man to grasp facial shaving. that this barber shop was pretty much run by women made me think straight away it wasn't up to standard and i was right. this said, i was shaved by the only man there but he did a bad job. when i got back to the hotel in proper lighting i saw that my neck line was crooked, very much so. to have to tidy my beard up after just coming from (one of) the most renowned barbers in london is simply embarrassing. i love their fragrances and old time profile, but they should spend more time with their customers and secure a job well done. also, they might want to renovate the ugly and cheap water-damaged ceiling since this is what we customers have to look at lying down while getting the shave. treating myself to a gentleman's shave in a gentleman's place turned out to be a quick fix in scruffy surroundings. read more
