So I just got home with worry in my heart. After the hour drive from Georges, my car smells like Carnitas. The worry comes from actually unwrapping the package and it never seeing it's intended use. It's that good. We hit this joint every time we go to Ft. Wayne, no questions asked. I'm not sure what store this used to be back in the day, but I will say it's about the size of a medium grocery store with the whole back wall dedicated to meat. Let's talk about meat for a sec. On Saturday there is a whole team of anywhere between 8 to 10 butchers breaking down whole products before your eyes. The far right portion of the counter is dedicated to just carnitas. Like most Mercado, carnitas are a weekend thing, and at George's, there are mountains of it from shedded to whole chunks. For the folks that know me, know I'm a sucker for a good grocery store. I like the fancy high-end ones, this is true, but give me an old school mercado any day. This is real food for real people. This is where the cooks at those Mexican joints come for their supplies. These stores are the source for all things Mexican in it's raw form. Georges, for me is more of an institution where I gain inspiration to try cook this kind of cuisine. If your in the area, or even if your not, make your way here and see what it is all about. Oh, Did I mention that there is a taqueria inside the store? I'll save that for another review. Oh yeah, and did I say there is a bakery next door, lol.

    The Atomic

Friends...I swung past George's after work tonight to grab a sweet treat for a small gathering of friends and I've just been crowned the most thoughtful guest! I purchased their 4-tiered cake called the atomic and for kicks got churros for the kids. This cake was to die for. It was so fresh, with a yellow cake layer, a strawberry gelatin layer, a cheese cake layer, a chocolate mousse layer and chocolate cake layer, garnished with huge strawberries! George's did NOT disappoint. Go George!! Oh, and the churro I nabbed was unbelievably fresh and crisp!

I was here two days ago and discovered this precious little diamond in the rough. And from Monday til today (Wednesday), I couldn't think of anything else. Today I ordered two Carne Asada tacos that were again flavorful and delicious. And the salsa provided was much tastier-it had a lil kick that I liked. The counter people are really friendly. They provided me a free sample of their house-made Horchata. It was a bit spicy (in a good way) and creamy on the tongue. Overall, I liked it. Not too bad for rice water. YOU SHOULD BE HERE!

Great tacos and exceptional imported feta/olives behind the counter. The meat area in the back doesn't look too sanitary though.

My wife and I make a special trip from out-of-town every two weeks just to buy the fresh fish. What a wonderful place!

However, I have been disappointed by the flavors and textures and even though I keep trying I haven't found anything that justifies a third star. Cupcakes - Mostly frosting, and that's okay, because the two cupcakes I tried were a bit dry and didn't have much flavor on their own. Sugar overload for not much enjoyment. Empanadas - The filling wasn't bad but the dough was so greasy I couldn't eat it. I like butter, but I don't want to feel like I'm eating a stick of it for lunch. I do like the clever idea of stamping initials on the tops of them so you don't have to guess at what's inside if you know what the letters stand for. The sweet and savory flavors should have different crusts; the base recipe isn't sweet enough to pair well with fruit. Other things I've tried were underbaked, doughy, and not flavorful. I am a baker myself and I have pretty high standards if I'm going to buy baked goods rather than making them. This place was an unfortunate miss for me.

There could be a rational reason for the delay, but the timing is suspect.) She said she understood their products were not for everyone....I am not quite sure who likes Apple Paczkis with no Apple filling...but I will agree it's only my negative opinion I hold. I will agree with that notion because I'm sure there are people when given a jelly donut from Dunkin Donuts under the guise it's a paczki would respond with, "Yum! Delicious." Krystal said she will refund 50% of my purchase. Yay! Improvement. However, I still can't decide if I would have paid $19 for the order knowing what I know now. +1 Star for some financial compensation.

Came here on a random Monday morning as we were walking around downtown Fort Wayne looking for…read morebreakfast and stumbled upon this place. We walked in because the night prior jokoy told us that he visited this place on earlier on the day and Sunday. This place looks very upscale, very modern and clean. It is a combination of a bakery, sit down and eat, as well as a small market, selection of foods and refrigerated items. The bakery presentation is really made to look absolutely perfect and minimal. So when you put an order in, they go to the back to get the actual items out. What I did not like was the signs for the baked goods are not very descriptive. For example, the Danish clearly has some type of jam on top, but the sign just says Danish therefore I had to ask what was on top. This goes for the hand pie as well. It is clearly stuffed with something, but the sign only says hand pie. I would definitely come back here again if I'm in town I have to say that everything was super delicious and everybody enjoyed the Danish the cinnamon roll, the shortbread and the hand pie .

I tried some of GK's amazing ice cream while I was in Fort Wayne for a media event. The people who…read moreput on the event provided pints of GK's locally made ice cream, in several different flavors, and we could take whatever we wanted. I don't usually like ice cream, but my excitement for free food trumped my indifference to ice cream. Plus, I saw an ice cream labeled "Caramelized Cookies & Cream" and I had to try it. Caramelize anything, and you can pretty much guarantee I will eat it. You guys: This ice cream was stupendous. Big chunks of cookies, notes of caramel in the creamy vanilla. I ate the whole pint, I tell you! Apparently, ice cream is just a small fraction of the desserts and sweet treats that GK offers. I didn't get a chance to visit their brick-and-mortar shop while I was in town, but I'm definitely going to visit the next time I'm in Fort Wayne.
