How awesome is it that record stores have found a way to survive in certain areas. I can definitely spend a day in here and just sift through everything they have. It's like going back in time without building the machine. It is awesome that Johnstown still has such a place. But what is extra cool is that Johnstown is home to the OLDEST RECORD SHOP IN AMERICA! Yes, you read that right. I know, you have your doubts about that. I did too. But me being me I asked the owner inside if this was indeed true and he said yes. They have been open and in constant operations for 88 years. YIKES! I asked my Mom about this and she told me she used to frequent the store when in Johnstown and where she got a majority of her records that she still has to this day. Let me address a few things here. The size of it has been downsized. There is no longer five floors to browse through, it is all on one floor now. I assume that is because the owner is getting up there in age so by keeping it on one floor makes it easier for him to help you out. I also assume this will cut down on people attempting to sneak out with an item. Another thing to address, this isn't just records. All formats are in house. So break out that boombox, they got you some cassettes to browse. Dust off that '78 Maverick, they got you some 8-tracks. Just bought yourself a turntable for nostalgia or because of hipster, tons of vinyl in here for purchase. There are even CDs if you held onto your Walkman. It is best to just browse when you are visiting. Yes, you may have something in mind when it comes to what you want, but by browsing you will stumble upon something new. I did see in other reviews that people were complaining about the pricing. Yes it seems steep, but let's think about this. Not many vinyls are made currently, it's starting to get up there, but not how it use to be. So you are paying a price for something that is probably a bit more time consuming to produce than a file that most of us are accustom to today. Yeah, you will be paying a price for something well made. If you find yourself in Johnstown, take the time to find this store. It is worth the trip down memory lane. read more

The shop itself had some great classics, but both old records and new were pretty overpriced. I was willing to put that aside and drop a pretty penny on several records that I've been looking for (plus I wanted to support a hometown record store). I can't support this place however. George himself was extremely rude and disrespectful to both my father and me. He seemed bothered that I was in his store shopping for so long. I don't know any record store owner who doesn't want people shopping in their store. Like I said, I went in there with a pretty big budget and was planning on picking up quite a few records. George was also very put out when I asked to listen to a record. He snapped at me and was very rude when I asked. Most record stores have a listening station where you can test the records for scratches or if it's warped or not. That's all I wanted to do since I was planning on buying some old records. I don't know how this place is in business. Part of the fun of going to a record store is the atmosphere. The connection of enjoying music with others. I frequent a lot of record stores and this is the first and only I've encountered where the owner makes his customers feel unwanted. I can't support that. Lots of records that are way, way over priced. Being new to record collecting I naively bought one that was 4 times the price according to discogs. What a waste of time. This store is in so much disarray. It needs closed for a month to get it in some type of order. I bought 1 album for the same price I could have gotten 3 at Hub City Vinyl in Hagerstown. Albums were way overpriced. Will not be going back. read more

This is the oldest record store in the United States. It has 5 floors of vinyl records as well as a large collection of CDs and some cassette tapes too. This is truly a record collectors dream! read more

Terrible. I drove nearly two hours to visit this store only to discover it has a terrible, terrible selection. Most of the store is cd's and the lp's are beat to all heck. Anything worth buying, and it was a stretch just to find a couple things, are marked up considerably from what the should be. For example, records I've gotten elsewhere for $16.99 at Endless Records, this place is selling for 27.99. Or $20 records for $30-35. You'd be much better of going to Bloomsburg or Ephrata, where they have real record stores.....oh and the owner is a complete jerk. Lost my business forever. read more

George's Song Shop! What a great place! I've been buying records here for over 40 years now, since I was a teenager. John George is a great guy, and extremely knowledgeable. If you've got a 45 you had back in the 50's or 60's and you're looking to have it again, George's will have it. Got a question about one of those old groups? He has the answer. The man is a walking encyclopedia of music! But, the best thing of all about John George and his Shop: like me, he never, ever, ever even came close to giving up on Vinyl! Even when LPs became nearly extinct, he always sought out to get whatever new release he could for you on Wax. This is my hometown record shop, and the only one I need. I don't wish the owner ill will and I'm sure he knows his stuff, but you if you live within driving distance of Pittsburgh, records can be had for a much better deal, say, at Jerry's in Squirrel Hill. Ordinary run-of-the-mill singles seem to cost twice as much at George's. And I could never quite figure it; does the cost of living in Johnstown justify those prices? And the "five floors of records" is news to me. If there are actually five floors, it wasn't apparent to me and it wasn't pointed out to me, either, in the handful of times I've been there. read more
