Congratulations to Kirby…read moreSmart and the Georgia Bulldogs for winning the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship. It was a long time coming. Kirby could very well be the next Nick Saban, winning multiple national championships over the next few decades. Kirby is only 46. Georgia (3) is now catching up to Georgia Tech (4) in the number of national championships won. ;) Georgia's national championships came in 1942, 1980, and 2021. In 1980, the Dawgs went undefeated, 12-0. Former athletic director Vince Dooley was the head coach and freshman running back Herschel Walker was the star player. Walker would go on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1982, his junior and final year in college. Senior halfback Frank Sinkwich is Georgia's only other Heisman winner. Sinkwich won the trophy in 1942, the same season that Georgia won its first national championship (Ohio State and Wisconsin also claimed national titles that year). I thought Georgia might've been wrong to fire coach Mark Richt in 2015. Turns out I was wrong. Even though Richt whooped our butts - he went 13-2 against Tech - I always liked him. My feelings about him were validated when he joined the ACC Network as an analyst. As part of the job, he even donned Tech gear once: . Objectively, Richt was a great coach. In 15 seasons at Georgia (2001-2015), he went 145-51 (.740) overall, 83-37 (.692) in the incredibly-tough SEC, and 9-5 in bowl games (.643). To date, Kirby has done even better. Since 2016, Kirby has gone 66-15 (.815) overall, 40-9 in the SEC (.816), and 6-2 (.750) in bowl games. Kirby is one of the best-performing coaches in college football today. His record speaks for itself. Of course, Kirby was able to do something Richt couldn't: win a national championship. How Kirby did so was impressive. He got what was probably the biggest monkey ever off Georgia's back by finally defeating his old mentor Nick Saban and Alabama. The single biggest source of Kirby's career losses has been Bama. So far, Kirby has been a dismal and somewhat-shocking 1-4 (.200) against Saban and the Tide. However, the 2022 national championship may very well be Kirby and Georgia's turning point. Through a combination of outstanding recruiting and coaching, Kirby has Georgia set up to be college football's next most-likely long-term dynasty after Saban and Alabama. Georgia's in-state rivalry with Georgia Tech hasn't been much of a rivalry, at least since I was a freshman at Tech in 2000. We beat Georgia on the road during my freshman year. At the time, we were ranked 18th in the country, coached by George O'Leary, and wide receiver Kelly Campbell was in my weekly biology lab. From 2001 through 2021, we'd beat Georgia only three more times, all under coach Paul Johnson (2008, 2014, 2016). The 1943 and 1944 results are counted differently by each school due to unique circumstances caused by World War II. In the big picture, a consistently dominant and national-championship-winning Georgia Bulldogs football team is great for the state of Georgia. Like the Atlanta United in 2018 (MLS Cup champions) and the Atlanta Braves in 2021 (World Series champions), UGA has done metro Atlanta and the state of Georgia proud in 2022.

Thought the Athens Half deserved its own Yelp listing -- it's growing fast and has a bright future…read more I highly recommend this race for runners who want to have a good time, enjoy great scenery at the nicest time of year for North Georgia weather, and still experience a course that will challenge them a bit. PLUSES: Excellent course with a nice mix of challenging and relatively easy segments. I didn't run last year, but some who did told me that it's a big improvement over the grueling uphill section leading to last year's finish line. Looking at the finish times compared to 2011, this is definitely a faster course. This year's course was difficult enough in spots that serious runners needed to think about what they're doing, but still forgiving enough for beginners to enjoy. Some steep downhills, a few sneaky-tough uphill sections, and several stretches where you needed to open it up and take advantage of the terrain to hit your time. Nice mix of in-town neighborhoods, open road and the UGA campus. Water stations were plentiful and well-organized. GREAT volunteers -- can't thank them enough for contributing to a successful race. LOTS of folks out cheering the runners, especially in the Cobbham, around Five Points and then on the bridge past Sanford Stadium. I'm sure the UGA fans enjoyed the final lap through the stadium. Traffic control and route marking were good, with one exception (see below). MINUSES: The runner refuel area was too small and prone to traffic jams. Not quite a train wreck, but definitely too tight for comfort. This DEFINITELY needs to be addressed next year. It wasn't too bad when I finished (1:32:00) but when the first big waves of runners hit about 10-15 minutes later, you could tell people coming off the course were frustrated and uncomfortable trying to navigate the crowds. I didn't need the porta-pots on the course, but I heard other runners complain that they were too few and far between. There was one point on the course, at Milledge and the Loop, where traffic coming off the freeway wasn't being controlled by police. The drivers I saw were very polite and stayed out of the runners' way, even when the light had changed, but it was a safety issue. Suggestions for next year: I started towards the front, just behind the 1:30:00 pace group. Everybody up there seemed to know what they were doing, but I can't speak for those further back. Given the size of the race, though, a more formal start wave system might be a good idea for next year.

Tribe Fitness has changed everything I ever thought about working out. Honestly, it's changed my…read morelife. I know that sounds crazy, but let me explain. I've dealt with injuries my whole life. I love running outside, but it seems that my tendons and joints weren't able to handle it. I would end up with knee pain, Achilles' tendonitis, or a hamstring tear and have to stop running for a few weeks. Every time I would lose all my momentum. I could never succeed in a consistent running program, now matter how slowly I progressed through it. And of course, running indoors on the treadmill or elliptical is SO BORING! Trying to go consistently to the gym was impossible for me. I'd either end up injured or make excuses not to go. The solution to ALL of my problems was Tribe. I've never been to a gym that I've been EXCITED to go workout in with a staff that cares so much. Here's a few reasons why I love it. 1) Matt and Ruthie are absolutely AMAZING trainers. They always take the time to teach us how to do the workouts with proper form, and they watch us every second to make sure we maintain it. They constantly give helpful tips and tricks on how to lift safely (which is incredibly important). And the best part is that they're always so encouraging through the workout. They genuinely want you to succeed! 2) Tribe workouts are SO MUCH FUN!!!! Every time I finish a workout I can't WAIT to go again. Yes they're challenging and kick my butt, but you're only there for 45 minutes and the WODs are no more than 25 minutes. It makes it possible for you to push yourself for the entire workout. We do something different every day, so that means I'm always learning something new or improving on something. It works your brain and your body. I've never gotten bored in a Tribe workout! Plus nothing can describe the happiness I felt when I mastered kipping pull ups and double unders. 3) Tribe is for everyone. Seriously. The workouts are hard, but the trainers will scale down the weight or technique so it's just right for you, and you can progress and build as you get stronger and more comfortable. The first few weeks are tough because you're challenging your body in completely new ways, but once you get adjusted it feels AMAZING. I haven't run in 6 months and I was able to run an 8:47 minute mile (my fastest before was an 11:30 after 2 months of running, and then I got injured). Yowza! The workouts are always hard, but as you gain strength it becomes quite bearable and now, I absolutely love the intensity! 4) Finally, my favorite part: no injuries!!!!! I'm getting stronger every week, lifting more weight and reaching PR's, gaining muscle. It's made a huge difference. I've never been able to work out for 3 months straight, 3 times a week without getting injured. And now, I'm finally there. I'm never going back to a regular gym. Ever.

Classes were so beginner friendly, but easily personalized to fit your needs if you were more advanced. Worked alongside body builders and people who were still at the beginning of their weight loss journey. Doesn't matter what level you're at, they'll make sure you're getting what you need. The people I met in the classes here were the most encouraging and friendly people I had ever met in a fitness class ever. Incredible energy. Sadly the pandemic happened and by the time things opened back up again, I had moved away.
