After that, she clipped part of the nail and said very vaguely that it was something she "might need in case there were issues with insurance approvals." At no point did she explain that 1.) this was a prerequisite for oral medication prescription, 2.) that the biopsy would result in additional charges, or 3.) that the sample would be sent to an outside lab for pathology testing. In fact, the way it was presented to me made it seem like I did not have a choice. Fast forward to today when I received nearly $400 in additional bills due to the nail biopsy and pathology lab testing. Mind you, Dr. Iwu had already determined my condition, so the biopsy and lab testing were not medically necessary. When I spoke with her after receiving the bill, she insisted she had explained the reason behind the biopsy (NOT TRUE) and how dare I question her. She also told me I "should have known" the sample would be sent to a lab. I am sorry, but last time I checked, I am not a medical professional, so why would or should I know this? Clear communication and asking for informed consent are the doctor's responsibility - not the patients. What's most disappointing is that despite acknowledging the situation as confusing, Dr. Iwu refused to work with me in any way on the bill. TRUST ME -- AVOID HER OFFICE AT ALL COSTS!!
