The backlash is warranted, and until this contract is killed, GPB will continue to be wholly unpopular to the audience it is trying to reach. Until recently, I was a casual viewer of GPB. Unfortunately, GPB and GSU have combined to effectively destroy a cultural icon of Atlanta radio, WRAS Album 88. The takeover leaves a HUGE void in Atlanta radio. Due to this contract, I have removed GPB stations from my TV and will more than double my donations to any competitor of GPB. The GPB office is on 14th Street, I live in-town and I still can not pick up their TV signal. I rely on WPBA 30 for my PBS TV. I also rely on WABE for my NPR radio programming. Now GPB wants to enter the Atlanta radio arena by knocking off WRAS' student run radio and offering more NPR programming. Sorry I don't need 2 NPR stations offering the same programs. I would, however, like to hear the shows and music that you will be removing from the airwaves. Also, an earlier reviewer mentioned Jim Stacy's local food show "Get Delicious". I highly reccomend that show as well, however, the show is produced through WPBA channel 30 "Atlanta's PBS Station", not WGPB. I think many people confuse the Public Broadcasting Stations or think they are somehow all the same. read more

Shame on you Public Radio, for destroying a great college radio station that has served and educated the public for so many years.

The hubby and I watch Antiques Roadshow religiously and love it! They also air a very intuitive show about GA mountain people called the Appalachians and run another show by an Atlanta local celebrity named Jim Stacey about food, which you should watch if you're from the neighborhood to get some good down home foodie place recommendations. Before this weekend, I was worried because there was only ONE station in Atlanta where I could hear "Car Talk" and "Prairie Home Companion" and "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" and all the other crappy NPR pabulum that gunks up the radio on the weekends. But now there's TWO stations! Thanks, GPB, for silencing diverse and interesting student-run radio in Atlanta with programming that's nearly identical to what already exists. Hear the latest? GPB has developed their own automobile. The problem is it only turns left. Used to be called Peach State Public Broadcasting but I guess someone in Atlanta thought that wasn't "hip" enough. There went a lot of donations out the window right there. Hope they have a big credit card. As a network, many words come to mind that cannot be publicly broadcast on a network or to the public. And, they think they're so smug. Do they not realize that Georgia is a big state and that Atlanta is just a small part of the population? Guess not. Today is about the third day of their "last" day of fund raising. We've all heard this before. Want the programming to continue, send us money. What would happen if GPS went off the air? On the latter, applause!!!! GPB is a notorious left wing mouth piece for anyone who is just right of center. Do they do any good? Naw? There's nothing on PBS or GPB that you can't get on the internet but without the left wing commentary. What got me was that three-story atrium built several years ago. I tell them as soon as I can afford to build such, I will donate to them. Also, that the building should be leveled up, it's leaning very heavily to the left, it could topple. They want to forget this. I hear all these stories on GPB that are oriented to the far left. Ok, fine. They want me to donate? I think I was the one who changed their slogan of "vote with your pocket book." When I called up and pledged my two-cents worth, they stopped saying that. So, it really wasn't true that you could vote with your pocketbook on how good or bad the network was. If you pledged a penny or so, they got mad and complained it'd cost more than postage. Put up or shut up! They shut up. I never heard that phrase again after pledging two cents. The news programs. Left of left. Fine. If you want me to support you, broadcast conservative views and moderate views too, NOT JUST IF YOU"RE NOT LEFT, YOU'RE GOING TO HELL type stories. Georgia is one of the largest states in what's left of this God forsaken country. Don't act like the world revolves around Atlanta and you're all southern when you're from Ohio or New York or Washington state, and trying to redefine what it means to be Southern. What happens if GPB goes off the air? No one will notice for about six weeks. After that, it will be no big deal. GPB does not speak for the state, although they think that they do. GPB does not set the tone for political views of the citizens of this state, although they think they do. GPB is not an agency that we, the people of Georgia, must keep up to promote the values that many of us do not support, although they think they do. I look forward to the day that Montgomery Ward, Sears and GPB can be mentioned in the same sentence for failing to listen to their customers and people simply went away, resulting in a big run on red paint. Do I listen to GPB? Yeah, it's my laugh for the day. When they ask for money do I submit? No, I don't drink that much. I suggest that GPB, since they're so keen on running stories on the left get donation money from some Arab states that they paint in such favorable lights and the clint ons. Lord knows that the cli nton foundation isn't want for money. Will I continue to tune in? And will I donate? Yes and NO! I will listen to the music and I will listen to the commentary but not support their views. Some might say it's like, you like the music, pay for it. I'm like, sending the money to Iran isn't to make more Persian rugs. Same here. GPB will use any money sent to them to continue their left wing news propaganda service. I will not support that. The day that GPB goes off the air, 99% of Georgians will not notice. Good riddance to GPB in advance. May you find work with Debbie Wa sser man Sch ulz in her next caper. The vast majority of the present Yelp reviews of Georgia Public Broadcasting [WRAS FM 88.5] are not reviews at all, but self-serving attempts to squash competition with PBS Atlanta [WABE FM 90.1]. Most of these so-called reviews make little secret of their motivation, e.g. "You steal my WRAS and I steal your stars". I moved to Atlanta a few years ago from a different part of the country and, as a long-time listener and supporter of public radio, immediately tuned into PBS Atlanta. I was frustrated when on many occasions the station was playing classical music instead of broadcasting national and local news and public interest discussions. Now I like classical music but don't tune into public radio to hear old recordings (on the other hand, discussions with musicians would be very welcome). I also note that many major metropolitan areas have more than one public radio station. It may be enlightening that there are many more Yelp reviews of WRAS than there are of WABE -- apparently some feel more inclined to spew venom than to praise what they like. I wish no ill-will toward toward WABE, but it is not right that it succeed only because it has a captive audience. Since Georgia Public Broadcasting embarked I have heard numerous informative and stimulating programs -- keep up the good work. I believe that Yelp has algorithms to identify and eliminate fake and irrelevant reviews -- such filtering is sorely needed here. Or at least, bump the real reviews to the top. Unfortunately, there are so many of these impertinent reviews that my 5 stars will have little effect on the average. read more

Recently made a major donation, mostly to obtain "gifts" of good tickets to Andrea Bocelli Valentine's Tour. Was to receive good seats, reception, & special dinner put on by Bocelli organization. I reserved this months before the event. Event got to last minute before plans were started by GPB staff. The initial plans resembled a relay race picking up tickets at the Arena at the same time the reception started in another location off site. Then plan was changed to have earlier ticket pickup. I became concerned when new email came without mention of reception, so husband called. He was reassured that we had "VIP status" & would be attending the reception, which was being held next door to the dinner (@theForum, on the property down the street from the Gwinnett Arena.) This was to be a champagne reception. It was a complete lie that we would be doing both. We learned from other attendees that some had been given a choice of whether to attend the dinner or reception, but we were never told that, in fact, we were repeatedly told the opposite. When we arrived at the Forum, no one seemed to know what they were doing, & we were given conflicting information. The bottom line appeared to be that those who were initially told that they would be attending both the dinner & reception were to be mislead into thinking they would attend both, as it was easier just to lie. Did not like or appreciate the manner or tone of those informing us (as allegedly VIP donors) that we were not allowed in the reception. Nor did the dinner go especially well since none of the GPB staff were apparently there, & the wait staff disappeared (presumably to assist with the reception.) They reappeared only long enough to deliver food & disappear again, leaving us to locate & pour wine, etc., which was not OK since the dinner wine was located on the opposite side of a large round table. We did not receive the "paired" red wine with the meal until husband retrieved it after our meals were finished, which was useless. The concert tickets were also disappointing. We assumed we would be much closer to the stage (since we had the VIP level donation,) had donated months earlier, & only five pairs of tickets were available for the dinner through GPB. The seats on the floor were small & so crammed together that it was uncomfortable. The seats themselves were well used & not comfortable. I will not again be deceived by GPB. read more

For a small public broadcasting network I expected better of them than the covert take over shenanigans that they have engaged in with WRAS. As much as I love NPR, and PBS, I've ceased watching this channel. We have blocked it on our TV. The students of Georgia State deserved better, the local music community deserved better, and the devoted Atlanta listeners deserved better. Album 88 is a vitally important voice in our city, and quite frankly, GPB isn't. There are other outlets airing the same program lineup and there are other stations that they could have taken over and built up. This is a travesty and the repercussions of this takeover will be massive. They are destroying something irreplaceable, something unique, to give us crappy syndicated programming. How many negative reviews and bad publicity will it take for you to leave WRAS alone?..... Oh wait, I forgot that you are the one radio station that doesn't actually care about what the audience prefers...If you are so culturally and educationally oriented, raise enough funds to take over one of the endless top-40 rap/rnb/ country bull**** stations!
