It was the first time I tired Georgian food. The ambiance was very cozy, better than I expected. The table setting was nice. I asked the waiter for recomendation. Eggplant with walnut filling, tomato base soup, flat fried chicken and dumpling. It was a pleasant experience I would like to try again.

A lot of beatiful European-looking clienteles (and we are the only non-European one). lol. Upon sitting: Free bread and pickled spicy beets/cabbage are provided, along with 4 different types of sauces. We ordered: 1.khinkali (dumpling beef and pork). 3 HUGE pieces of dumpling. Theres broth inside the dumpling. Taste yummy and homey 2. Goergian bread with chese and runny eggs in the middle. best to eat while it's warm. the bread feels fluffy. cheese is not heavy as i thought. 3. (medium-grilled) baby lamb rack comes with side dishes & bread. tender. 'homey' taste (not overpowering like typical food in restaurant). 4. walnut cake comes with vanilla ice cream. cake doesnt feel condesed/heavy like typical cake! and definitely great mix with ice cream. Overall, food taste 'homey', which is good/different experience. But didnt feel compatible with high-price (receipt with food name&price are attached for reference). We will not be back as there's nth really memorable/oustanding flavor-wise..(except for the great service!) With same spending, we feel it's more worthed to spend in different restaurant. But if you never try and looking for yours-truly-experience, go ahead. After all, whats not too great for me might be hidden gem for you. Cheers!

Before giving my 2 cents on Vizavi, I would like to explain (for the uninitiated) how the vast…read moremajority of Russian restaurants in Toronto function. Most are open for lunch and dinner and will have a menu from which you can order a meal. However, their primary source of business (and validation from the Russian community) is the "full-cover" option where the patrons order a number of seats paying a set fee (depending on the menu options and the time of day) per seat. With a full-cover, your table will be layered with dozens of dishes, with new ones added in a span of 4-6 hour. Most Russian restaurants have some live music in the evenings along with a dance floor. Although the full-cover option is available to smaller groups, it is usually utilized by larger parties. It is common for a larger group to book the entire restaurant for a wedding, a birthday party or a work function. To larger groups, the restaurant functions as a banquet hall. Most of these restaraunts serve alcohol but BYOB is a very popular option. I would recommend three basic rules you will need to follow in order to enjoy your full-cover experience: 1. There will always be more food on the table than you can enjoy at any point in time; 2. The best food usually comes later so don't over-eat earlier (see rule number 1); and 3. If there is music, don't be shy about doing a little dancing between courses (it helps burn calories). Most of the Russian restaurants offer similar dishes in their full-cover options. They are usually judged by the handful of dishes that is unique to a particular restaurant and by the quality/freshness of the food. With this in mind, here is the review of my full-cover experience at Vizavis. I have been there several times since many members of my Russian-speaking family like to book it for their birthday parties. Overall, my experience as relayed in this review has been consistent. The restaurant is a comparatively small space. A group of 30-40 people might be enough to book the entire venue. It doesn't have the tacky, over-the-top décor like faux gold high ceilings and giant chandleries (which is either good or bad depending on what you like). You won't get married here but you can have an intimate birthday party with 30 of your close friends and family. There is a decent-size dance floor and the music is pretty good, with some English and French songs mixed into the usual lineup of Russian restaurant songs. The staff is good at re-filling drinks, setting tables, replacing dishes and catering to the dozens of minor requests for new cutlery, extra napkins, etc.... With the full-cover option everyone is on the same clock and you don't have to worry about your orders being mixed up. The food is excellent. Everything is prepared fresh and you don't feel like you are eating yesterday's leftovers (which is more than I can say about some other Russian restaurants I won't name here). The braised veal ribs are fall-of-the bone delicious and the grilled meat platter served towards the end is solid. The restaurant serves some unique dishes including an avocado-mango salad, potato latkes and the house-specialty varenyky (a type of Ukrainian pierogi stuffed with strawberries). Honestly, I would go back just for the varenyky and would recommend this dish, to anyone just ordering from the menu. Overall, Vizavis is a great experience.

After looking through the menu, it seemed that we would be able to hit it (with maybe an extra dish on top of what we'd order) so we went ahead. The server took his time to explain the menu and gave some recommendations, but we came ready with a list of things we wanted to try. Having never tried Georgian food, I was not sure what to expect. We ordered the Assorted Pkhali (vegetable spreads with walnut sauce inside) and Khachapuri Acharuli (Georgian cheese boat with egg yolk). Right off the bat, the bread that came with the spreads was warm and fresh, with the perfect crust. The spreads were seasoned with garlic, herbs, and each one was so unique and flavourful, not to mention the presentation was beautiful. The cheese boat came with gooey cheese that they mixed with a yolk and square of butter - it tasted like fondue and I am still dreaming of it! Next we had a Georgian meat pie, the kebab platter, Chanakhi (lamb stewed with veggies & spices), and Chakhohbili (stewed duck with tomato-based walnut sauce). Generally with kebabs, they can be a hit or miss because some places tend to dry out the meat, but everything was so juicy and seasoned well. I especially loved the lemony golden potatoes on the side tossed in dill and could not stop eating them! The stews were also great, and the walnut sauce was very unique. As someone who loves soup dumplings, we also couldn't miss out on the Khinkali (Georgian soup dumplings). We got one traditional style and one with lamb. I was not expecting them to be massive when they arrived. The server explained the etiquette for eating them (hold the stem, turn it upside down, drink the soup, then eat the dumpling while leaving the stem). There was a decent amount of soup inside and the meat is very reminiscent of a Chinese dumpling. For drinks, we tried the Kompot which is a drink made from fruits boiled in water and served in a 1L bottle. They recommended the feijoa one which was described as similar to guava but sweeter and we all loved it. At the end of the meal, we tried their Turkish coffee which I had with the whipped cream from our cake. It was fragrant and strong, very tasty. It was quite a busy night with the servers continuously running back and forth. All the while, they were very nice and hospitable the whole time. Definitely deserving of their Bob Gourmand recommendation on the Michelin Guide.

There seems to be a lot of drama between the management and the entertainment staff as we've witnessed a couple of meltdowns by the singer on more than one occasion. This results in a far less than enthusiastic performance and no singing past 11pm. She also acts aggressively towards patrons as we witnessed when she sang happy birthday to one of the other groups that were celebrating the night we were there. The staff yank the food off the tables quickly, so you need to make sure you eat as soon as they bring it out. There are other oddities that soiled our experience. Upon arrival we were harassed by a rabid coat-check guy who insisted that everyone check their coats. No need to be so aggressive...not a great way to welcome people to the venue. There is also an old guy that comes around taking pictures and tries to sell the prints. If you decide to buy from him, give him exact change. Our friends bought 2 photos from him for $30, but when they gave him two $20 bills he took off without giving them their change. All in all, too much hassle, sketchiness and drama. There are a ton of other similar banquet halls in the area, so we would not consider booking a party here.

This is not one of those huge typical banquets and your not just another number! You feel like a VIP guest invited by the owner; who at all times is in site, the stage and visits you at your table and makes sure all your needs are met! The decor is classy sophisticated and the music is really fun and up beat (mostly European, Russian, Romanian, Latin, jazz and even a mix of the Middle East) and it's always LIVE. I especially love their food! Since I'm a 'foodie' it's definitely a fusion of Europe and some.. And the way it's served is very unique! It's not the traditional 'per plate servings', you gotta see it to believe it! As soon as you arrive you notice the cozy modern fire places, warm decor lit up by cozy candle light, you hear the soft mellow music in the background (before the band goes on) and are amazed as you approach your table; it is set with your 'starter menu' (each event, table setting is customized by you and the management/owner) You will see multiple styles of salad, antipasto style cold cuts, seafood, caviar with fresh crepes and much more!!! Later as the mood picks up and the band starts playing the dance floor gets really full, and in between breaks, as you visit your table for a little break, or a drink you notice the starter apps leaving your table , but don't worry! Their being replaced with warm food, multiple times / and finally your main meals which could include shish-kabobs, Kiev cutlets grilled or baked salmon or other selections (depending on what was chosen during booking) the drinks keep flowing, the music keeps playing and if there's even a tiny ounce left in you, you will be served fresh hot tea and coffee, desserts and fresh fruit! Want to feel like a king or queen for the day? I definitely did! We've even had our children's party here for brunch, they have large screens by the stage, they catered to all our needs, with child friendly entertainment (clowns, dancers etc) kids menu, music and even kids movies playing on those huge screens I mentioned earlier! We have a blast every time! Need I say more?
