During this pandemic, I gravitate towards making and eating foods that are comforting to me. Although I am not Eastern European, I do love the cuisine. It's a combination of my living in Winnipeg, where I had amazing Ukrainian food, and having khinkali (Georgian dumplings) and more over a year ago. I miss going to Bravo Bistro, which is an eatery steps away from the office where I work. It offers cabbage rolls, perogies, and more that I love. It seems like eons ago when I was last was at the office. Anyway, I was running errands like I typically do on a Saturday. I needed to grab some lunch, did a search on my Ritual app, and found Moldova Restaurant. It has khinkali. Yay! I originally ordered the khachapuri (it's essentially a cheese pizza with an egg on top). A few minutes later, I was notified that it was out of stock. I was sad. Perhaps pouty. Who could tell behind a mask? Ritual is good in that it gave me 15% off my next order. Well, I took full advantage of that deal by changing my order up in less than five minutes. I got these items instead: - Khinkali with buckwheat as a side - Cabbage rolls - Honey cake My order would be ready in fifteen minutes, according to the app. I took my time leisurely driving over to the restaurant from shopping at Giant Tiger in Etobicoke. Moldova Restaurant is on Dufferin Avenue, a few streets south of Steeles Avenue West, on the southwest side. This restaurant is in an area with tons of parking. It was quiet on a Saturday afternoon. I backed into a parking spot and went in. There is patio dining. No one was dining. I headed over to the bar. Although it said that my order was ready on the app, it wasn't. The nice gentleman said that one more item needed a few more minutes. He offered to come to my car and deliver my food. I was game. I headed back to my car and waited. The wait wasn't long. It was roughly five minutes. He came over to the passenger side. I rolled down my window. He placed two plastic bags containing my food on the floor and was wearing a mask. One had my dessert, including ice cream. What?! I didn't realize that it came with ice cream. Yay! I thanked the nice man and made sure my food was protected before I drove off like a crazy woman to avoid having melted ice cream. Nah, the crazy driving part didn't happen. I simply dreaded the thought of having melted ice cream by the time I got home. I was ready to eat lunch at 5 pm. Yeah, my lunch time is becoming an early dinner on Saturdays as the months go by. Everything was nicely packed. I was pleased. I had the cabbage rolls first. There were four of them with tomato sauce over them. They were so good. Each one had ground beef and rice in them. The cabbage leaves were tender, but not mushy. The filling was flavourful and not overly salty. The tomato sauce was bright. Yum! I then opened the box of khinkali. There were four of them. They looked Georgian to me. I was so happy. I carved into one. The filling seemed to be a mix of pork and beef. It was generous. The khinkali were delicious. The dough was perfect. The filling was spiced well. They were juicy and done right. I was curious about buckwheat as a side. I've had buckwheat in pancakes and soba noodles. I didn't know what to expect. Well, the buckwheat was seasoned with parsley and salt. I enjoyed it a lot. I had so much left over that I ate it with a side of corn the next day and loved the combination. Buckwheat is yummy in my books, and a nice alternative to potatoes or rice. I love honey cake. I automatically said yes to it when I saw the menu on Ritual. The layers were impressive. It was yummy. It could have been more moist cake-wise, though. Still, the wasn't overly sweet, which I appreciated. It came with three scoops of vanilla ice cream, which did not become ice cream soup in this heatwave. The caramel drizzle make me think that two of the scoops were faces looking at me... haha! The ice cream definitely balanced out the slightly drier cake. I would have given this place five stars if it hadn't run out of khachapuri. It just means that I need to return to this eatery and order it again. Hopefully, my luck is better on that front. I loved my food here. It's a hidden gem that I wasn't aware of. Thank goodness I found it on Ritual. (212)

Borsh was not fresh and discussing

Mediocre food, service is horrible. Got a borsh soup which was not fresh you can see it in the picture. Salad was not fresh eather, could smell that it was in the fridge for a LONG time. And in the end they gave us wrong bill! CHECK YOUR BILL! Never coming back!

Recently went back to try more of their options because of how much I loved the food and experience the first time. This time I tried the fried Georgian dumplings (fried khinkali). The ones I had were stuffed with lamb, but they also offered beef, cheese, and mushroom options. They were absolutely delicious: well seasoned, and cooked perfectly. The service was also just as friendly as before. This place is one of my new go-to's for sure!

Borsch, chicken soup zeama, avocado salad (more avocado please!), humus with pita (complimentary). Also ordered pork ribs with coleslaw

Washrooms could be cleaner but overall pretty good! Try their 'Armenia' wine with pomegranate. It's divine!

    Georgian Dumplings were delicious

My friend and I came in for lunch, and we've never had Eastern European food. We were both impressed! The portion sizes were large, and worth the price. I had the lamb shish kebab, it was tender and seasoned very well. The Georgian Dumplings my friend and I shared were my favourite part. I've never seen dumplings this large, and the flavour was incredible! Would come back just for those.

    Lamb Chops were soooo good!!!!!

Before giving my 2 cents on Vizavi, I would like to explain (for the uninitiated) how the vast…read moremajority of Russian restaurants in Toronto function. Most are open for lunch and dinner and will have a menu from which you can order a meal. However, their primary source of business (and validation from the Russian community) is the "full-cover" option where the patrons order a number of seats paying a set fee (depending on the menu options and the time of day) per seat. With a full-cover, your table will be layered with dozens of dishes, with new ones added in a span of 4-6 hour. Most Russian restaurants have some live music in the evenings along with a dance floor. Although the full-cover option is available to smaller groups, it is usually utilized by larger parties. It is common for a larger group to book the entire restaurant for a wedding, a birthday party or a work function. To larger groups, the restaurant functions as a banquet hall. Most of these restaraunts serve alcohol but BYOB is a very popular option. I would recommend three basic rules you will need to follow in order to enjoy your full-cover experience: 1. There will always be more food on the table than you can enjoy at any point in time; 2. The best food usually comes later so don't over-eat earlier (see rule number 1); and 3. If there is music, don't be shy about doing a little dancing between courses (it helps burn calories). Most of the Russian restaurants offer similar dishes in their full-cover options. They are usually judged by the handful of dishes that is unique to a particular restaurant and by the quality/freshness of the food. With this in mind, here is the review of my full-cover experience at Vizavis. I have been there several times since many members of my Russian-speaking family like to book it for their birthday parties. Overall, my experience as relayed in this review has been consistent. The restaurant is a comparatively small space. A group of 30-40 people might be enough to book the entire venue. It doesn't have the tacky, over-the-top décor like faux gold high ceilings and giant chandleries (which is either good or bad depending on what you like). You won't get married here but you can have an intimate birthday party with 30 of your close friends and family. There is a decent-size dance floor and the music is pretty good, with some English and French songs mixed into the usual lineup of Russian restaurant songs. The staff is good at re-filling drinks, setting tables, replacing dishes and catering to the dozens of minor requests for new cutlery, extra napkins, etc.... With the full-cover option everyone is on the same clock and you don't have to worry about your orders being mixed up. The food is excellent. Everything is prepared fresh and you don't feel like you are eating yesterday's leftovers (which is more than I can say about some other Russian restaurants I won't name here). The braised veal ribs are fall-of-the bone delicious and the grilled meat platter served towards the end is solid. The restaurant serves some unique dishes including an avocado-mango salad, potato latkes and the house-specialty varenyky (a type of Ukrainian pierogi stuffed with strawberries). Honestly, I would go back just for the varenyky and would recommend this dish, to anyone just ordering from the menu. Overall, Vizavis is a great experience.

There seems to be a lot of drama between the management and the entertainment staff as we've witnessed a couple of meltdowns by the singer on more than one occasion. The staff yank the food off the tables quickly, so you need to make sure you eat as soon as they bring it out. There are other oddities that soiled our experience. Upon arrival we were harassed by a rabid coat-check guy who insisted that everyone check their coats. No need to be so aggressive...not a great way to welcome people to the venue. There is also an old guy that comes around taking pictures and tries to sell the prints. If you decide to buy from him, give him exact change. Our friends bought 2 photos from him for $30, but when they gave him two $20 bills he took off without giving them their change. All in all, too much hassle, sketchiness and drama. After looking through the menu, it seemed that we would be able to hit it (with maybe an extra dish on top of what we'd order) so we went ahead. The server took his time to explain the menu and gave some recommendations, but we came ready with a list of things we wanted to try. Having never tried Georgian food, I was not sure what to expect. We ordered the Assorted Pkhali (vegetable spreads with walnut sauce inside) and Khachapuri Acharuli (Georgian cheese boat with egg yolk). Right off the bat, the bread that came with the spreads was warm and fresh, with the perfect crust. The spreads were seasoned with garlic, herbs, and each one was so unique and flavourful, not to mention the presentation was beautiful. The cheese boat came with gooey cheese that they mixed with a yolk and square of butter - it tasted like fondue and I am still dreaming of it! Next we had a Georgian meat pie, the kebab platter, Chanakhi (lamb stewed with veggies & spices), and Chakhohbili (stewed duck with tomato-based walnut sauce). Generally with kebabs, they can be a hit or miss because some places tend to dry out the meat, but everything was so juicy and seasoned well. I especially loved the lemony golden potatoes on the side tossed in dill and could not stop eating them! The stews were also great, and the walnut sauce was very unique. As someone who loves soup dumplings, we also couldn't miss out on the Khinkali (Georgian soup dumplings). We got one traditional style and one with lamb. I was not expecting them to be massive when they arrived. The server explained the etiquette for eating them (hold the stem, turn it upside down, drink the soup, then eat the dumpling while leaving the stem). There was a decent amount of soup inside and the meat is very reminiscent of a Chinese dumpling. For drinks, we tried the Kompot which is a drink made from fruits boiled in water and served in a 1L bottle. They recommended the feijoa one which was described as similar to guava but sweeter and we all loved it. At the end of the meal, we tried their Turkish coffee which I had with the whipped cream from our cake. It was fragrant and strong, very tasty. It was quite a busy night with the servers continuously running back and forth. All the while, they were very nice and hospitable the whole time. Definitely deserving of their Bob Gourmand recommendation on the Michelin Guide.

I hope people don't take this seriously as he has just one review. Speaks volumes about his Russian restaurant experiences... Just FYI I have been to over 15 different Russian Restaurants, including 2 more in Los Angeles. Let's do this review right and give an amazing place justice. THIS IS THE RUSSIAN RESTAURANT RIGHT NOW. THE PLACE. ASK ANY SINGLE EASTERN EUROPEAN BAKERY IN NORTH YORK/TORONTO and they will tell you wow, everyone is going to Tatiana. We had to reserve our Saturday night 3 months in advance. People from Hamilton, St Cathrines, Pickering, Ajax, Mississauga -everyone is trying to get into this restaurant. Why? You need to understand the nature of RR (let's just go with this for Russian Restaurant(s) from now on). It's an extremely difficult and restless business - you need to be working 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. RR management and names and chefs change weekly if not every other 4 days. So, if you go to one RR and you LOVE it and go back the next week you may not find that you have the same food or the same service. Russian people drink and they dance. This is what RR is about. Don't come here with expectations of a friggin steak house on King St, what is wrong with you? It's an EVENT. It's a BANQUET HALL. People come here to wear their beautiful suits and dresses, to meet with their best friends, to drink and to eat amazing food. I've had bad food experiences with RRs but this one is great I have no complaints about the food AT ALL. (except for the holodets, anyone who's Russian will know and will understand that no one ever likes or eats it at RRs...) So. About the service. Have you ever seen Orange is the New Black? Tatiana is Red. She's not rude. She is not mean. She is extremely helpful, she is nice, she is stressed out but she is organized to the tits and she will get sh*t done and FAST. If she tells you how many people don't go hmmm...welll....i was thinking... NO. NO! TELL HER HOW MANY GODDAMN PEOPLE AND MOVE ON. If she tell you come at 8 do not come at 7. She will say what the F are you doing here. Because this is business and ain't nobody got time for your indecisiveness. Tatiana also has one of the best RR websites out there - with a full menu available online. Booze: bring your own. to the other reviewer person - are you friggin kidding me? Where else can you get a 2L bottle of wine for $12 bucks (LCBO) and a 7 course dinner with caviar, seafood, lamb, traditional Georgian food (that's hella hard to make), huge marinated oyster mushrooms, kebabs, etc for $65+10% tip and tax. HELLO. WHAT PLANET DO YOU LIVE ON. Also, $65+tip is the weekend night price. Weekday nights and brunch are much cheaper and much quieter with no sacrifice in quality. Food: i posted some legit pictures. White fish fillet stuffed with crab and baked with cheese, smoked salmon, marinated mushrooms, grilled pepers artichokes zucchini and asparagus, roasted potatoes, pate, 5+ different kinds of salads, cold cuts including chicken with apricot INSIDE (yeah.). stuffed eggplants, prosciutto with melon, chicken salads, red caviar, rice, chicken lamb and minced meat kebabs, mussels and shrimp sauteed in some kind of cheese tomato sauce, i could go on for days. you get the point, there is something for EVERYONNEEE and it's impossible to list everything I ate there. Service: Fast, attentive, cute and funny. We even gave our servers one of my mom's 50th birthday bouquets because she was sooo cute. Entertainment: Saxophone dude - you're so cute and your voice is like an Angel's. Also, those sax skills...wooow. The girl, i wish i knew your name, thank you for singing that Ukrainian song in support of our motherland. GO HOME PUTIN. Decor: Lovely. The table pieces were tasteful and charming, I love the table set up and there was plenty of room. TIP #1: Bring your own wine. There's no corking fee. TIP #2: Ask them to pack up whatever is left over! They have boxes, it's allowed and you can eat delicious resto food for a whole week! TIP #3: Dance. Enjoy yourself. I would not recommend this place unless you are in a large group and part of the Russian community. The staff were otherwise lovely and they food was tasty. Just the owner was weird, suspicious behaviour around the food and rude to myself and my friend.
