Nightmare 2025 bathroom remodel. Take note to everyone's complaints about Gerken. They do not build "beautiful bathrooms". They put lipstick on a pig. After 8/9 weeks of this company destroying our property, not plumbing to code, uneven tile, door frames not secure or level, leaks, and destroying our property with vehicles, running saws in our home, using our home as storage for their property, we called it. Richard's go to phrase for all complaints, "we will get it in the back end." The back end would never come due to messing up the correction. We called them when we encountered a big leak behind our tile. We thought about just fixing the problem, but Mom and I are aging, so we considered a walk-in shower. After talking with Emily at GCS, we decided on replacing our tub with a walk-in shower. It is so much more spacious and feels like luxury when we take showers. The men that installed it were super nice to have in our home as well. Richard and Emily kept in contact throughout the process. We are extremely pleased with our new shower! They also installed a laundry tub in our basement after tearing out a huge old sink. I wasn't sure what would work, yet Richard knew exactly what we needed. Pull up a chair, this is a long one. Let me first start off by saying this is my 2nd time utilizing Gercken Construction aka Amazing Bathrooms for my bathroom remodels, as I know Richard's rebuttal will make mention of that. The first time using his company was when covid first hit. His reviews were good, and he was good about follow up. We paid him our first deposit and all other installments, which were immediately cashed in the same day. This was a little concerning for us as it made us question his business stability, but things seemed fine. After work was completed, I moped the new tile floor and noticed the width of the floor in one area was darker than that rest but I was busy and didn't give it any attention, it wasn't until the next time I saw the same thing happen, that I got down on my hands and knees and saw that my tile was completely cracked all the way across the floor. We rarely use this bathroom so it had been months since the tile had been laid but I called Richard's tile guy who stated that the whole floor would have to come out and because my floor was heated that element would need replaced too. I also asked Richard about this crack, and he said my 28-year-old house must have settled.... No other tile that we had put in that bathroom has ever cracked but I took him at his word and have lived with this. What a sick feeling. Then one day we had the basement carpet replaced and found out that the new bathtub they installed had been leaking since installation. Because my basement is finished this consisted of removing the ceiling and part of a wall to get to the leaking drain. The plumber stated that Gercken construction had not used the right drain for the tub, nor did they seal the drain at all. They barely pieced it together and closed everything up. The Plumber documented all this, and the repair cost us 900 dollars and left us with a hole in the ceiling and in the wall that I get to see every day because no one wants to come do a small job.... We absorbed the blame for all this since we failed to notice much sooner. Forward to 2022 we decided to remodel our primary bathroom, and finally found someone we really wanted to use but he was booked up for 7 months, we waited on them but after many delays and a year's time we started looking again and after much hesitation decided to give Gercken another chance, why you ask? Because he was available... which should have been another red flag for us, but I took this opportunity to point out their last mistakes once again and made clear what my expectations were on this project. Could things be worse? Yes, they can. Things started off fine and went downhill from there. We knew from our prior experience with them to stay on top of things, so we did. This is what I expected and paid Richard to do but that did not happen. We would come home each and every night to another problem. My unlevel floor was a huge concern and it was to be taken care of, I repeatedly asked Richard about it, and he said it was fine, then we noticed the trim was off, contacted Richard who said my floor was slightly off... after he said it was fine but instead of making 100% certain, he didn't. He knew this was a huge issue for me and then blew it off. They could have fixed that before this tile was laid and it would have been fixed. Uneven floor = unlevel free standing bathtub... if you lean on it, it moves up and down, so he wanted to glue it down to fix... No thanks. My shower door company said I had to have triple studs to mount their frameless doors so I told this to Richard on 3 separate occasions who kept telling me he would take care of that- he didn't, he then said I didn't need it, said the boards will hold the door and then just told me to use his shower guy. That is NOT his decision to make. I am paying him to do what I want, not what is convenient for him. They put the wrong trim on 3 times, they tried to reuse spare pieces of my old trim, they cracked pieces of trim on my vanity, the painted walls, trim, and shutters have overspray and runs on them. I wanted a beautiful library wall, and this is the mess I was left with. I broke down and paid a real professional to fix and repaint that wall and now it looks like it should have looked in the first place. Richard cuts corners and uses cheap materials but charges you a fortune. He knows that most people do not see these things. I paid a premium price for subpar work. Not once but twice!!! Because you must, 1 star for the award performance he gives you to get your business. If I were to give one positive, it would be that he is willing to rework things over and over again, with no resolve. Personally, I was sick of them being in my home with the same outcomes. When you look at the pictures on his website, keep in mind that what you are looking at is beautiful tile, new fixtures, bath/shower, and vanities that people purchased. Well guess should have read reviews first, but hey wanted to use hometown business, what a mistake, stop at new location on Stewart Rd. Sales Manager Ric Lutz reviewed our needs, said would have bid in 10 to 14 days, TWO WEEKS PLUS LATER left message said company too busy for my job. As a very successful businessman of 43 years first rule never refuse business because you're too busy. Then to recommend a sub personally used contact, doesn't work for me. Requested someone to come put and give a quote on a addition. The night before at 630 was called with a ridiculous price 50k higher than 2 other bids we already had. If you don't want to do a job tell me you have other stuff going on. Not some bs the NIGHT before. read more

I scheduled an appointment for a consultation for a bathroom remodel with Stephanie, who was very friendly. However, she contacted me the next day requesting to reschedule because Richard had family plans and could not make the appointment. I understood, and gladly rescheduled and rearranged my schedule to accommodate a new appointment. The day of the new appointment Richard called me 2hrs before our scheduled appointment stating he had follow up questions about our project. He then proceeded to ask me the same questions Stephanie and I had previous went over. I went over the details again with Richard and explained what we were looking to do. Richard seemed disinterested and stated he was running behind and he would not be able to make the appointment. He asked me to reschedule once again for another day. I explained to Richard that my husband and I have busy schedules and we could not continue to reschedule due to his negligence. Richard failed to take accountability, lacked preparedness and was insincere. I would not recommend this business due to lack of professionalism. However, I do not blame Stephanie, she did her job. If I could pick no stars or negative stars I would. The owner of this company, Richard Gercken, talked a big game when trying to get my mother's (83-year old) business/first check of over $10,000, but he did not follow through with quality work. We even reduced the amount of work in the initial contract (full blown kitchen & hallway) and he tried to give us a new contract for more money saying that adding dry wall and paint to a small laundry room (with existing walls) was more money then installing a hallway and full blown kitchen! He would not return any money for doing less work. Every step of the basement remodel was stressful dealing with him and was defective in some way. What he says verbally and what he puts in small writing in a contract are two different things. For stance, he quoted us for installing a tile shower, but if we wanted to actually use it, we had to pay extra for sealing the grout; and we were quoted for finishing the walls in our basement, but if we wanted insulation, we had to pay extra ($1800). He had a timeframe of 4-6 weeks, but we are half way through month number six. The owner of this company has treated us poorly throughout this process and we DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM! Now here are some of the work issues: ALL of the plumbing install had leaks and some needed to be redone 2-3 times due to leaks, the main valve for the water was put behind tile when all he had to do was move the main valve 2 feet into the laundry room on the other side of the shared wall or move the wall (they built) over 2 feet, the wall shower head interferes with the waterfall shower head because they are too close together, the shower heads are not centered, The sink in the garage was not put in the place I asked it to be installed (I was told the guy did not want to make another trip to Home Depot to get a longer hose so he put it where he wanted and right next to an electrical plug that he told me earlier that it could not be installed next to), the new walls and pocket door framing are all crooked, we can still see dry wall mud on walls because the paint is not sufficient, our vinyl flooring is already coming up all over the place, the tile guy put ledges on our corner seats that stick up past the tile which now hold water, the tile guy put a ledge all around the nitches that stick out past the tile, the grout on the floor was insufficient and he has to come back to redo it (still not great), I have too many levels in my ceiling when I was told it would all be flat except for the beam going across, I have unsightly vents out the back and front of my house because he did not have enough knowledge to recommend turning the rooms by 1/4 to run the vents to the side of the house (which is where he said they would initially be), we have electrical junction boxed all over the ceiling, the electrical plug ins are all different heights on the walls, they broke our door (said nothing to us) and installed it crooked (we had the door removed and fixed by another person), the doors do not have enough paint on them and I don't think any primer was used before painting them (metal doors and the paint is scraping right off), they installed a piece of dry wall over an issue in our joist without mentioning the issue to us (we were told by several of his workers that they brought it to his attention and he said just cover it), which is causing the ceiling to bow, trim work over the brick was installed that does not match our style of trim as a bandaid to hide the bowing ceiling (which is still there so it did not work), this trim work was shorter then the brick on the wall and did not match up to the side trim (we had to remove it and have someone redo it). I also had a discussion with the owner because he wanted to install baseboard before the flooring. I told him I thought the flooring should be installed first to prevent gaps because I did not want quarter round. We argued about this and he said he was so sure the baseboard could be installed before the flooring without gaps that he would pay for the quarter round to be installed if it happened. Well guess what - It happened! I gave him the formula for staining the quarter round, but it showed up the first time too light and the second time too dark, gunky and scratched up (apparently he cannot follow simple instructions). Then he told me he would send new quarter round and I could do it myself!!!! I guess he wanted me to fix his mistake! It is his job to do quality control, but we have been the ones catching the mistakes even though he claims he has been on the job site. Question - Why wasn't he catching the mistakes through out this remodel? Our remodel is still not finished and he is no longer responding.
