It's been awhile since I've tried Ghenet. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity this past week. The injera bread was very fresh and delicious. I always get a combination dinner. This time I tried the Siga Wett beef stew with Ethiopian spices - very delicious! Spicy but not too spicy. Ethiopian food can be addictive, years ago I was definitely into eating a lot of Ethiopian. New York City has some great Ethiopian. If I were a tourist here, it would be on my list under "things to try." Or at least to try once ! I also had 2 vegetarian dishes - the Shiro Wett and the Messir Wett. The Shiro was made with beans. The Mesir was made with lentils. I've had the Shiro and Mesir Watt many times before - both at Ghenet as well as other Ethiopian restaurants (Awash Ethiopian on the upper west side). I think Ghenet has some of the most flavorful dishes in the city. They don't overdo it - just the right amount of spicy hotness. Overall, my favorite dish from the combination platter was the Shiro Wett. It had a light touch of smokiness that went really well with the beans. Very filling and delicious with the injera. I wish they offered fitfit salad - the menu has Ethiopian tomato salad but there are no photos of it on the online menu. There are photos of some of the other menu items but not all. I think they'd sell more stuff if there were photos since not everyone is familiar with all of the various dishes. Just a thought. read more

A standout Ethiopian restaurant, not that I'm an expert, for several reasons. while the focus of several Ethiopian restaurants around the area seem to be vegetarian or vegetable focused, one of the reasons why this place caught my attention at first was due to the menu that featured a large variety of meats not easily found else where in NYC. I came here and ordered the doro wot and the kitfo. Kitfo was okay, just what you'd expect of raw meat, but it paired beautifully with the vegetables that were offered. The doro wot was the absolute star here, the chicken was moist and the sauce was fiery and bold with a hint of earthiness, this is still a dish I think of from time to time and currently use as a standard of how doro wot should taste The only thing that irked me about the restaurant was the confusing pricing. The combination pricing really did not make sense. We ordered the meats, were given two vegetables for each meat and paid for what was listed for the doro wot and kitfo, making the section about combination pricing completely obsolete. Still confused to this day. Either way come here if you want excellent Ethiopian with a focus on proteins with the addition of great vegetables. read more

The lunch special was a great deal. I chose engoudaye wot (mushrooms), shiro alicha (lentils), and shimra asa wot (ground chickpeas) with injera and lemon San Pellegrino. Please bare with me after an 18 day absence, this is the perfect way to break the blank, eating a cuisine I have never tried before. All the Simpsons' episodes, and all the conversation in the world could not prepare me for what I was about to eat. There is a reason Ethiopian cuisine is an unworldly cuisine, and I was about to get a front row seat as to why that is. When I first walked in, I saw them issue me to a brunch menu. Slightly disappointed, I asked them about their dinner menu and requesting I try their Doro Watt (chicken) stew combination. It comes with two other vegetarian stews of my choosing, They obliged, if I were willing to wait a little longer for it. I was fine with that. Along with the Doro Wett, I got the Atkilt Wett, which contains potatoes, carrots, and cabbage, along with the Misir Wett, a spicy lentil stew. It all comes with a plentiful amount of Injera, an Ethiopian flatbread you use to pick up the food and eat it with. There are no utensils in Ethiopian cuisine. To my surprise, the food comes out fast, and it looks beautiful and is very hot, both in flavor and in texture. It also tastes absolutely amazing. Imagine your tastebuds waking up for the first time. That is how this feels with every single bite you take of this food. Excellent flavors, excellent textures, and the Injera is the perfect tool to make this work exceptionally well. The spice level is perfect, but if you have trouble with spice, then perhaps this is not the cuisine for you. If you run out of Injera, just ask for more. They will give it to you at no additional cost. I do feel this is a cuisine best for sharing. I tried my best to power through and finish this all myself, but the bread is just too powerful. It is like a sour pancake, but it will expand your stomach faster than Wonka's Everlasting Gobstopper. Other than that, partake generously in all the amazing and aromatic flavors and enjoy. In an attempt to not spoil too much of the experience I'll keep it brief: Best eaten with your hands, get in there. Best eaten with friends who will also eat with their hands. Okay but they also provide forks. Try the honey wine, on the sweet side hence the name but I enjoyed trying it ($12 a glass) Some stews are spicer than others, this turned into a game for my non spicy friend. This is my absolute favorite Ethiopian restaurant. It was one of the first I visited. I've tried several since and nothing compares. The front area near the bar has ten or so tables and there is more seating in the back. They don't take reservations, but it is usually quiet with no wait to be seated. Pretty much all of the vegetarian stews are amazing. Particularly noteworthy are the engoudaye tibs. I haven't found this dish at other Ethiopian restaurants and it's delicious. The mushrooms are tender and plump and complemented perfectly with the savory sauce. The shiro wett (spicy beans), atkilt wett (cabbage, potatoes, and carrots), and yedubba wett (butternut squash) are also top choices. The combination platters come with unlimited injera which is a squishy, slightly sour bread. It is customary to eat everything with your hands. The food is super filling. The restaurant is just a 10 minute walk from the Barclays Center so I always make a point to visit whenever I'm going to an event there. read more

Love love love this place to bits. I came here with my boyfriend 2019 Valentines Day and they were PACKED. We came back in 2022 to support them since we love them so much and was so sad that there were almost no customers when we walked in. I really hope that they get busier now that restrictions are lifting and we are entering a tentative post-pandemic world. Anyway, you can really get anything on the menu and you would not be disappointed. Literally just point to anything and I guarantee you it will taste fantastic. So first of all, love that they have veggie options for us vegans and plant-based eaters. However, maybe it's just me, but I wasn't feelin it. The majority of the vegetarian dishes were puréed and just reminded me of spiced-baby food. A couple of the textures were slimy even. The bread was so sour and triggered by tyropophobia so much, I had to flip it upside down and look away in order to eat it. The potato dish and the collard greens were good. I can count the number of Ethiopian restaurants I've eaten at on one hand, but Ghenet is my favorite one so far. I dined here a couple of times pre-COVID and again last fall, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all my meals and experiences. The doro wett is my go-to order. I never quite remember which veggie options I end up choosing, but I tend to enjoy most of them aside from (I think) the shiro wett. The gomen and engoudaye tibs are especially tasty. I used to love getting the meat and veggie combo platter, but during this past year they haven't had this option. When my friend and I went, we got one order of the doro wett and split a vegan combination platter. It'll cost a bit, but it yields so much food. If you have any self control (I did not) I'd recommend eating half and saving the rest for another meal. I've been a long time customer of Ghenet. The food is okay but the delivery is absolute garbage. Today we received an order with two combination platters, but no injera was included. When I called Ghenet to address this, the manager told me that we had stolen the injera and said he had checked the security footage. WHY WOULD WE DO THIS?!? This review is for a take out order I did yesterday afternoon on Uber Eats. I order Kitfo (medium rare ) for delivery . Now , I know Kitfo to go sounds ridiculous but I was craving it and previously when I have ordered it , it was exceptionally really good . Hence where my grievance begins . I personally don't have a problem paying $30 for a meal. Especially, if it's seasoned really well and comes in a package that doesn't look like the kind your auntie brings from a cookout . My first time trying Ethiopian food and not my last! Very reminiscent of Indo-Caribbean seven curry, but better!! Honestly, if I knew about Ethiopian food I would have catered this for my Hindu wedding. I thought this was overpriced for a plate of lentils and veggies but very flavorful and guilt free eating. This looks like your locally owned small business restaurant which provides a wholesome experience (outside of Ethiopian food itself being so communal). I can safely say that each one of us left extremely stuffed and satisfied. Could say I would try again -- an out of Towner so the only thing I would say that the food seemed a bit on the pricey side but that might just be a New York thing. My dinner experience here was quite mixed. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the service we received from our waitress. I found about half the items on our platter to be quite delicious, and the other half were all lacking in either flavor or texture. When we arrived, every table was full, and there was a party ahead of us waiting for a table. The hostess told us, "Give me a few minutes," but she never seemed to act on that. After about twenty minutes, one party left, and the folks in front of us were seated. It was only then that the woman who eventually waited on us came over to us directly, and then she proceeded to lead us to a back room we didn't know about, which was completely empty. I don't understand why they couldn't do that sooner, or why the hostess didn't instruct someone else to seat us there. As the evening went on, other parties were seated here. I think it would be an improvement to the menu to indicate what comes with some of the dishes. We spent a lot of time debating how many vegetable sides we would need to add to provide enough food for our group, only to have our waitress tell us that for our tibs plate, you could also select 8 of the 10 vegetable sides to accompany it. Among our dishes, I found the yebeg tibs to be quite tasty and well prepared. Ghenet also featured two vegetable sides I have not yet seen anywhere else, engoudaye tibs (mushrooms) and yedubba watt (butternut squash). These were delicious. The cabbage and green beans were fairly standard. The collards were unbelievably bland. All of the other lentil and bean dishes were essentially soupy, as if they had been overcooked, pureed, or stretched in content to fill the pot. You couldn't scoop them, it was more like dipping your injera into them. The injera was also very light in color, a light beige, and somewhat rubbery. Perhaps they use a somewhat different recipe, or more wheat instead of teff. I noticed that several of the more recent reviews reference things changing, and not for the better, in their reviews. This was my first time dining at Ghenet, so I have no prior visits of which to compare it. But I can make comparisons to meals at other Ethiopian restaurants I've had in NYC. Based on my experience here, I'd dine at Ghenet again, but I'd only give it preference if I were already in that part of Brooklyn. read more

I really like Ethiopian cuisine and if you've never tried it, it's a delightful treat. Before visiting Ghenet, I've had Ethiopian food many times at other restaurants. Through a recommendation, this was my first visit. Located on a busy street corner at Douglass Street and 4th Avenue, Ghenet is quite spacious offering two dining areas--one upon entrance and another in the back. There's a strict seating policy where all members of a party must be present. That said, I waited for a few minutes at the bar browsing the extensive menu. There's a lot to choose from: appetizers (soups, salad and more), traditional mains and those with injera ---the star of Ethiopian food. It's the sourdough-like springy bread used in place of utensils to sop up the delicious sides, whether meat or vegetables--arranged on top. I read somewhere that it serves as a "tablecloth." Once sat, we selected an appetizer, the sambusa. This was a pastry dough, lightly fried stuffed with either spicy beef, chicken or lentil. We selected lentil. It was delicious--however, the portion (cut into 4 pieces) was quite small. For main, I wanted the combination vegetable injera. My 4 toppings/sides were winter squash, lentils, mushrooms and collard greens. The other combination selection was one meat (chicken) and two veggie sides. Therefore if you're a meat eater & feel undecided, there's the option to combine meat with vegetables. Accompanying the two combinations was a basket of 6 individual injera. It is typically included at Ethiopian restaurants. Also, there's the option to order a combination platter for one person up to 4 people for sharing. The vegetable combination was amazing offering a spicy kick with an explosion of flavors from the various vegetables. Delicious. We also tried the Ethiopian wine, Tej which is a honey wine and in my opinion---very good. The waitress mentioned it was kind of sweet but I liked it. My only nitpick was that it wasn't chilled enough. I really enjoyed my visit at Ghenet and would not only recommend but return. Have never eaten Ethiopian food before.. this was delicious. We ordered the option for 2 people. We were able to pick 8 sides. Got a little of everything. We also picked up their beef option. I just remember really enjoying the lentils, peas and collard greens. The bread was spongy and flat like a crepe. It's the vessel used to grab all the sides. Had dinner at Ghenet Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon. Excellent food and friendly service, I would highly recommend this spot to individuals looking to try Ethiopian food for the first time. Quality: I found myself craving Ethiopian food, so decided to try out a spot in my new neighborhood. I was very happy with the food we ordered. We started with the Chicken Sambusa, which was probably my least favorite item, yet still good. I wish it was just larger chunks of chicken, as the minced chicken comes out too mushy. Next we ordered the Vegan Combination For One and selected the Misir Wett (lentils), Shiro Wett (spicy bean), Yedubba Wett (butternut squash), and Gomen (collard greens). The Shiro Wett was my favorite from the veggie options, while the Gomen was my least favorite, but I would gladly order them all again. We also added to our platter the Doro Wett, delicious seasoned chicken in a spicy sauce served with an egg, and the Kifto, steak tartare, which was my personal highlight. There is just something about the dining experience at an Ethiopian restaurant, really getting to enjoy all sorts of wonderful dishes in different combinations that makes you eager to return. Quantity: The Vegan Combination For One is large in itself, and once you add on a few meat dishes and the extra injera, you are sure to leave stuffed. Value: $10 for the Chicken Sambusa. $20 for the Vegan Combination For One. $20 for the Doro Tibs. $23 for the Kitfo. Ambiance: Ghenet Brooklyn is located on the border of Park Slope and Gowanus. Other than the uniquely designed window panes, it is easy to miss the restaurant. The space inside is small and seems even smaller with the addition of plastic screens between each table due to COVID. It definitely takes away from the communal dining experience that you usually find, but I appreciate their commitment to safety. The decor is very cool, with lots of little elements that you may not even notice, including the hut like ceiling design. Crowd: Fairly busy on Wednesday evening. About half the tables were filled and I saw several take-out orders, though it would not be my first choice for take-out. Service: The staff is very friendly and patient. It was clear they developed strong relationships with regular customers and they are happy to explain dishes to folks trying Ethiopian food for the first time.
