In messaging Hocus Pocus Tours with a couple questions about the tour and travel to and from Salem, the owner Susan replied immediately and suggested that I call her. This led to a one hour phone conversation where Susan was so gracious with her time, knowledge, and suggestions, not just about how to make the most of the tour, but how to appreciate a day in Salem. I can see why those who had the opportunity to take the in-person tour with Susan really enjoyed it. Covid changed the business model and Hocus Pocus now offers a self-guided tour by purchasing one of two tour apps. I opted for the $19.99 grand tour and it was well worth it. It has 37 points of interest. The app is user friendly and well designed. It provides a map of all stops, tracks where you are, and guides you to the next stop that you select on the tour. When you get to your stop, you can confirm you're at the right spot by comparing a photo of the site with what you see. Then you click on a 2-3 minute audio recording that provides a great snapshot of the significance of the site. As Susan had pointed out to me, there is much more to Salem than the historic witchcraft trials. It includes author Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of Seven Gables, America's oldest candy company, and other interesting sites. Of everything I visited, I experienced a very deep emotional connection with the 1692 Witchcraft Memorial with 20 stones dedicated to each of the victims of the witchcraft trial. The tour includes brief descriptions of some of the victims including those written about in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. If you plan to visit Salem, I highly recommend this tour. All sites can be visited on the outside and some on the inside at no charge. Some sites, such as The House of Seven Gables, charge separate admission fees. If you want to travel to Salem and don't have a car, the ferry from Boston offers a nice, scenic, and entertaining 50 minute ride. The commuter trains run more frequently and can come in handy if the ferry schedule coming or going doesn't meet your needs. There are plenty of good places to dine at to break up the tour. We had lunch at FINZ and really enjoyed it (I'll post separately about that).

The tour itself was a few hours and you walk to all of the sites in Salem with historical significance. There is so much to learn from Salem. So much history and heartbreak. It really is eye opening to hear the stories oof the witch trials and how the witch trials began and who all was wrongly persecuted. The tour guides were so nice and explained everything with such great details. This tour was definitely the highlight of our trip in Salem. We arrived in Rome only to find our luggage did not. Despite the extra time we needed to file a claim for our bags, our driver Roberto waited patiently for 2 hours until we were ready. He was fantastic. The next day is when we met Guido and our trip instantly got better. He toured us around Florence, stopping by local shops for wine, snacks and espresso. He made us feel welcome, made us laugh, and most importantly, made us forget that we didn't have any clothes. We were with Guido for 3 days in Florence where he took us to 3 amazing vineyards, helped us plan our meals, and on the final day he took us to the airport to reclaim our belongings. I cannot overstate what a great pleasure it was to spend time with him. Christina helped us with the next part of our trip by arranging transfers from Naples to Positano, scheduling a top-notch cooking class, and planning a boat tour of the coast. This is a first-class operation that we will surely be using again for future trips to Europe. I wanted something more personal, and affordable. Finally found 'Discover Tuscany'. Christina immediately started helping me with this. She works with Guido (our tour guide). Everything was arranged for him to pick us up at our hotel, and have the whole day planned for us. Christina helped us with our train schedule (we visited 3 cities), and also booked our hotel in Florence. This part of our trip was Absolutely perfect thanks to her. She worked hard and accommodated to our schedule and requests patiently and successfully. We arrived at Residenza Johlea (hotel Christina recommended and booked) and it was one of my favorite hotels in the 2 weeks I was in Europe. For our wine tour, Guido was right on time, very friendly, funny, and very knowledgeable. He asked what exactly I was expecting from the tour, and with my input, even though he had the day planned, he changed it seeing that other things might be more to my liking after talking to me personally. He made a couple of calls and took us to 2 Brunello wineries. Must say, this is now one of my favorite wines. Not only was the wine amazing but the people too. We got a tour of Costanti where we tasted 4 of their Brunello wines and got a tour of their winery, while learning about the region, the wine, and it's process. Next, we went to a small, family owned winery, winner of last year's best wine in a blind tasting and found only over there.. This was a really nice experience, we met the owner and wine maker Valter Nanetti, very nice man. Met his wife and grand kids, plus we were able to handpick fruits from their garden - delicious! After this, and extra to the tour I had envisioned, we had a cheese tasting. Fresh, smelly, so good. Lunch came next, and a little tour of the city. Before I left, I really wanted to see sunflowers. They weren't in season yet but Guido drove and drove until he found them for me. This was not part of the tour but, I know Christina had told him this was one of my "must do" in Italy, and with me telling him too, he just went for it. I can't say how much I appreciated this and his great attitude throughout the whole tour. When I get another opportunity to travel like this, I'm contacting Christina again to help me plan it. She's a great person to keep in mind, she's a travel agent with great hotel contacts and tours. If in Italy, ask her about Guido, he offers tours all over the country, not just wine. Believe me, you'll have a great vacation and learn at the same time.

A lovely walk that begins by Harbor Beach and leads you to Wiggly Bridge & Steedman Woods. You…read morecross the grass from Harbor Beach, walk by the docks then you'll see the first sign. This short walk allows you to see senic views of York within a residential area. It lets you feel like a local! At times you feel like you're in someone's backyard but that's the whole point. The residents of York were generous to allow us to essentially enter their "homes". Just stay on the path and follow the signs and you'll be fine! Parking near Wiggly Bridge is hard due to permit parking only signs, so I would recommend parking near Harbor Beach then using the Fisherman's walk to access the bridge and woods!

For the price, this tour was 100% worth it. $37 for a 2.5-hour tour felt like a steal for how much you see. The only downside was the other group that was paired with ours. They were loud and kept interrupting the guide, which took away from the experience at time but that had nothing to do with how great the tour itself was. Would recommend to anyone visiting! PS - we went the first weekend AFTER Halloween. It was pleasant weather and not crowded at all. Anne showed us a picture of the crowds during peak Halloween season...that was the spookiest part!!! People packed in like sardines, a la Disney world in summer. Consider going in November if that's not your style.
