This review is based solely on the pub area of Market District. They consistently have good beer (IMO) at very fair prices. Tons of local beers in draft. An example is a local hazy IPA that I live that is less here than at the brewery. The folks working are extremely friendly, the beer list is live updated live on Untappd. They have a happy hour and a wing Wednesday. Great place. About 10-12 seats at a bar and tons of seating at tables. read more

So if you are not from the area this is a grocery store plus.. it's like a store plus Whole Foods/Wegmans . They have a lot of nice food stuffs, beautiful aged beef, house made popcorn, a lovely bakery and lots of local Pittsburg related items like food stuffs. They also have all your normal grocery store stuff too. Get a Giant Eagle card to get some discounts, the house brands are good. Granted it's not inexpensive but you get what you pay for. Three times in the past four weeks we've had food, produce etc that was spoiled as soon as we unpacked it. Last month qw had another problem with rotted apples at the bottom of a bag when we brought it home. The quality of the products has really deteroriorated recently. read more

The store is fine - signage isn't always the best. But one thing is some of the customer service clerks are anything but there to serve customers. I've had occasions where an item purchased scanned incorrectly...when I take it to customer service, it's almost as if they're accusing the customer (me) of somehow manipulating the system in order to get the item for free under their accu-scan policy. They truly act as if the refund comes out of their paychecks. But beyond that, the policy is what it is and is set down in writing so clerks don't get to make new rules. I have now given up because despite their policy which states the customer should get a refund, it's not worth being treated like a scammer. read more

While I'm not really a regular Giant Eagle shopper, this Market District is one location that I visit as needed. If you're familiar with Giant Eagle, you already know what you can expect here - the special section for wine and beer, the bakery, the produce, the deli, and so forth. Since this Market District is a sizable location, it's a great option when I need to pick up a variety of grocery and household items, particularly anything that I might not have found during an Aldi or Target run. As others have mentioned, Giant Eagle tends to have higher prices than some other stores; but if you shop with them to supplement your basic purchases elsewhere, you'll be in great shape and will likely find everything you need for your weekly meal prep. As a note, the Settler's Ridge Market District is even larger than this one. Some people would consider that a good thing, and granted, it can be when I have a larger shopping list. But I personally find the layout of this store easier to navigate, while still not being as cramped as non-Market District locations. With all of the above in mind, I'd rate my shopping experiences here as good ones, although I guess that statement comes with an asterisk and a comment about not coming here for all of my grocery needs. Market district had last year a great fish sandwich it had a large flakey Cod fish battered dipped on a hoagie roll last year cost $8.99 it was worth it! What the hell happened MDistrict this year? It was dark brown almost burnt and it was bread piece of fish shaped like a triangle? Was a frozen piece of fish $8.99 thats all you get a fish sandwich subpar for price- Put it this way the oil they fried this non flakey fish in old oil too was bitter tasting like old oil? LOVE coming here for the prepared foods, particularly the Pho. So delicious and flavorful. Better than I might expect to get at the grocery store! The service at the Pho counter is superb. Haven't been able to come since the pandemic but can't wait to come back. Also love curbside express service that is offered! Very efficient and have not have bad service. I'm generally a fan of small store that aren't too busy which isn't exactly this location. However, it means more options as well so I'll be back. read more

This review is specific for curbside express. Too frequently they don't have something and do not communicate well. They seem to wait until they are done, then notify they are out of something and ask about a substitution. Before you can reply, they have closed out the order. It has happened with enough frequency that I started using a different Giant Eagle in BP - which has been great. read more

$6.99 for a 5 lb bag of potatoes!! Then to get them home and 1/4 of the bag was rotten... produce was way over priced for the quality.. Giant Eagle prices are outrageous... I'm new to Pittsburgh was looking at different stores to become my go to grocery store. My husband and I stopped in this giant eagle in Mount Lebanon and we floored by the prices. Immediately we still own our home in Colorado where it's a super expensive to live, but at least at the Safeway where you pay these kind of prices you're getting extremely fresh groceries beautiful produce their prices match the quality at least so it's not so hard to pay the price. I recently had a cake made here for a last-minute grad party. I was nervous due to past experience in which their cake decorating were sub-par so I provided a photo of exactly what I wanted. They did an amazing job!!!! The bakery staff was super friendly and accommodating with my specific requests, really appreciated. I had an almond cake with strawberry filling and buttercream icing. It was so delicious and completely finished by the end of the party. That speaks for itself :) I had to knock of a star due to the cookies I also had made for the party. Upon pickup on the day of the party, they were not decorated like the photo I showed them. I felt it was a fairly simple request so it was unfortunate that I had to return an hour later while they redid them. The cookies were dry and crumbly. However, they were accommodating by letting me provide them with the cookie cutter shape I wanted since they did not have it, rather than turning me away. After a disappointing trip to WholeFoods we landed at Market District. Very clean when I walked in with a great aroma of coffee! Starbucks is off to the right when you first walk in and discreetly to the right of Starbucks is the restroom. I started I the pro ice section after treating myself to a coffee. The fruit and vegetable section seemed odd at first when I weaved through but i was trying to not miss anything. Anyway....The produce looked beautiful!! I didn't have to waste my time picking through like I do at the Robinson Market district. There are multiple weigh stations for scan and go and a few regular scales. Their veggie protein in the produce area had a lot to offer with brands like fieldroast and light life. The meat and seafood section looked like it had a lot to offer but I was trying to stay on track with my list so I didn't observe too closely. This store is very large so I didn't make it though all the aisles but it's worth going if you're looking for special ingredients or just have general shopping to do. read more

I also enjoy stopping at the Starbuck's in the bakery section on my way out in the mornings occasionally. This is one of the worst of the Giant Eagle Market Districts, actually the Shadyside location gets that honor, but I digress. A couple reasons pop into my head. First it was a Giant Eagle before being transformed into a Market District. It doesn't have that new store feel, it feels like a GE that was transformed. Secondly, the parking lot is horrid. There's never a place close, and it's just a poorly laid out lot. This actually describes both this location and Shadyside. The Settler's Ridge Market District, which is the flagship store, has more parking and is well laid out and safer. Inside, the store feels cramped, every department feels like they all meld together. Good deli and prepared food, but you expect that from Market District. GEMD is also known for their bakery department, this store is no different. Great grainy and whole wheat breads are what I love to make paninis with, their twelve grain bread is perfect, they slice it just a bit thicker than the norm, for a heartier sandwich. Where Giant Eagle does lack is in their vegan department. Offering not much by way of variety. There are so many great vegan products available to consumers these days and GE seems okay with offering meatless hotdogs, tofurkey, and rice cheese. Wegman's and Publix are way ahead of Market District in vegan offerings. Pass by this Market District and head to Settler's Ridge. read more

For years now I've been bemoaning the lack of a Wegman's supermarket in the South Hills, but the newly renovated and recharged Market District takes the sting away a bit. For those of you not familiar with the concept, this is so much more than a grocery store. I took pictures to illustrate, and, now that I'm persuing them, I'm noticing how many are of candy and chocolate, so you can see where my weakness lies. But they do have an amazing sweets section, with house made chocolates, including truffles, and those eye catching vertical bins chock full of individually wrapped candies that make it near impossible to come here with children in tow. I tried a dark chocolate and pistachio confection today, which is a combo I've never had, and it was a delightful taste sensation. There's even a little cafe style sitting area where you can enjoy your gelato. Artisinal and European chocolates are for sale here...I saw Callebaut and Cacao Barry among the offerings, and the Lindt towers beckon. So, on to the actual groceries. The produce section is great, with a good choice of organics...enough so that I need only make a trip to the Food Co-op in the 'Burgh once a month or so. They also have lots of produce from local farms in season. The cheese section may be my favorite part of the store. The station is well staffed, so sampling and chatting is encouraged. I've been known to add a half hour on to my shopping time in this section alone. They do an admirable job of sourcing good quality cheeses from many countries, and, while it won't compete with those little boutique cheese shops in towns like Madison, Wisconsin and Ann Arbor, Michigan, I can usually find what I'm looking for, and I've been educated about cheeses that were new to me. They have a small but impressive chill case full of imported cured meats from Italy and Spain just past the deli...also featured are D'Artagnan sausages and pates. The kosher section is pretty good too, with Empire birds, ground turkey and deli meats. A local woman is making kosher baked goods, and there's a display stand full of her products. There are quite a few of these around the store, in fact, which is great...a big supermarket chain that showcases local edibles has my heart. The salad bar is nice, and, while the hot food station is large and looks good, the food is just OK, which is one of the reasons this market doesn't get 5 stars from me. They're emulating Wegman's in design, but they've failed to deliver with the prepared foods. A nice addition this past year as Pittburgh makes an attempt to leave the Dark Ages behind is the ability to now buy beer at a supermarket, and the selection of micro brews is quite good. The beer section is rather removed from the rest of the shopping area, so as not to contaminate the Puritans amongst us, but it's there. For your kitchen and bath pantry supplies, this store rules. They added a bulk section with the renovation, and it's not just a nod to the concept...they actually made very good choices, with organic quinoa, steel cut oats and organic brown basmati rice among the items available. There are both olive oil and bulk coffee bars, and the aisles abound with hoity- toity brands like Mario Batali pasta sauces, Kiehl's, Ahava and Bumble & Bumble personal care products, 7th Generation cleaning and laundry products...even Riedel stemware makes an appearance here in the housewares department. So, a B+ rating from me. When they can get a decent avocado in (what is it with avocadoes and Southwestern PA? I haven't found a good one here yet), and some corn tortillas, and do a better job with the hot food station, then I'll revisit this review. Until then, I'll try not to be too picky, and I'll enjoy the bounty with which we are so blessed. read more

I like this Giant Eagle it's close to South Hills Village Mall. They have eateries where they will make pizza and chicken and hot dinners. They also have a bar and sit down area to eat and other grocery areas. Good place for a meal if you don't want fast food.. read more

Pharmacy should have texted me when the prescription was ready. BUT THEY DID NOT AND THE STORE CLOSED AS I CALLED TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE MEDICATION. I set up text messaging for a medication that my veterinarian was phoning in. At no time was I made aware that a dog would need to set up it's own profile with it's own cell phone number. BUT THAT IS THEIR RULE. THEY JUST DON'T TELL YOU. So my dog did not get his urgently needed medication tonight. The lady who told me they were closing was pretty sure all this was my fault. I find this experience to be POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

We've been shopping at Giant Eagle for years. We loved it when they added the beer section where you can not only buy beer but sit and eat. It is called the "Cafe" and we make use of it quite often. You can go to the prepared food section and get pizza, chicken, hoagies, sushi, soup, or make a salad at the salad bar and eat your meal in the cafe. We come here when grocery shopping, to meet friends, or after church. The grocery store itself has everything under the sun, but it can be pricey if you aren't buying sale items. We are pretty thrifty so we see what grocery stores have in sale and then head out to shop. The associates are always nice and helpful and the store is always clean. We usually buy gift cards to help save money on gas. Now that they've added a Starbucks it's even better. read more

I've been using Market District Curbside Express for years, ever since they invented this. The MD in Robinson is top notch. They always called beforehand if they were out of anything or for substitution approval. When I pulled up, they came right out when called, were fast and always very friendly. Since moving to Mt Lebo, I've been using this MD in Bethel Park. Service is like night and day. They NEVER call if they are out of anything and they automatically substitute items even when I explicitly state no substitutions. Also, when I arrive I always have to call 3 or 4 times before anyone actually picks up the phone. Then it takes 20-30 minutes for them to get my order and come back to load it in my car. The worst part about it is the pick up location is next to where the employees take their smoke break. So I have to sit there in a cloud of smoke. This place literally stinks! read more

Swung by Meats. 2 packages, just reduced angus beef. Marinating one for dinner tomorrow. Freezing other. Chatted with Barista, who educated me in depth on the coffee selection he picked. He gave me a couple of scoops of beans, gratis, to try. So kind! Self service check out requires employee's help if you have coupons attached to packages. Not advisable if you're crunched for time. I love this store compared to the GE in Rostraver Township. Wider variety of item's. Both are very clean but I wish this one was closer to my home. This is a gigantic Giant Eagle with loads of fresh produce that aren't often available in other grocery stores. The prices are decent. The store appeared clean and easy to navigate. The gluten free food section is solid, but they should order Canyon Bakehouse breads because they are so much better than Udis. The staff are super friendly and very personable. I think that makes shopping in a store (as opposed to online) worthwhile. I'm not from Pittsburgh so I notice a difference in how open and conversational people are with each other here (at least in comparison to several places I've lived). Huge market with lots of selection. For some of the more perishable produce (like raspberries) you need to check the freshness, but some fruit was great (cherries). Lots of types of gourmet items - cheeses, etc. You can probably find everything here. read more

I've had so many issues with their pharmacy that I've permanently changed locations. The techs are rude and do not answer the phone. My shortest hold time was 9 minutes which is insane when there's 2 people in line waiting, 1 person at the counter helping, and 4 people working in the back. Not only that, but they lied to my doctors office about informing me of a refund policy due to their error. Unbelievably unprofessional. Management, pay attention and please make changes. read more

I came to the counter with 7 items, one item over the 6 near the alcohol register. I waited for 10-15 minutes in line to be turned away because of ONE EXTRA item, they were all small as well. Then I had to wait even longer, when it simply would've taken a second to scan the extra item. On top of that it's constantly packed and crowded, even though it's a pain to go shop elsewhere I will never give them my business again for them being so extremely petty. i love coming here. it's like a destination food trip. i always leave with more than was on my list! i saw in the circular as well in the store itself, a thing called b.y.o.b. in the cheese department. that's what i am writing about. b.y.o.b. stands for bring your own board! it's a charcuterie board in a bag! for $25! they vary with what's inside the bag, so read the tag! the bag i got had-a wheel of brie, a regular size slice of gouda & sharp cheddar, a package of napoli salame & 1 of soppressata salame, a package of sesame seed flatbread crackers, & 2 small bottles of blueberry jam. the other bag that was available had goat cheese. not our thing, but i know someone else would love it. i, of course, in my over-the-top way, added some mustard, capers, another kind of cracker, & fruit. oh, & a nice bottle of wine! it made a delicious meal for me & tom on easter! i will definitely get this again! you ought to check them out too! all you need is the board, or plate! enjoy! sorry, i forgot to take a picture! read more

The only reason why I visit this Market District is that is has a semi Kosher area and I can get some of my foods needed for Hanukkah or whatever other Jewish holiday is going on. I normally get chopped liver since they make it fresh and it is a family favorite. Please note that their deli prepared items are not Kosher. If you are looking for that make sure to check labels on products they carry. The store is very extensive and has its own baked goods area, a Starbuck's and a dine in area for prepared foods. They also have a section devoted to cooking as well as beauty products beyond want you would find in one of their regular stores. Still Giant Eagle is overpriced and this one in particular gets very crowded early. It is also a bit difficult to get in and out but it does save me a trip to Squirrel Hill or East End to get the products I need when the occasion warrants it. They have prime quality meats and seafood in the back but expect to pay a pretty penny for it. They also do catering. Arrangements can be made at that department and a nice floral area. It has just about everything you need but be ready to pay for it. read more

This Giant Eagle is likely the very best I have been to and probably reflects on the relatively upper-income area that it's in. It is a Giant Eagle for gourmets and gourmands alike. Blessed be to detours and roadwork for that was what diverted Kay and I from our usual Giant Eagle in the Virginia Manor shopping plaza to her aristocratic sister near South Hills Village. When we first walked in, I of course was drawn to the cafeteria portion of the market which included beautiful looking pizzas, subs, entrees, and even the kind of candy one would find at a department store counter. 'Tis a pity we lunched at TGI Fridays before coming here. The deli is absolutely comprehensive and carries within its glass cases housemade pastrami and corned beef as well the usual stand-bys like chipped ham and American cheese. Being a novice and therefore unadventurous cook, I probably can't appreciate this grocery to its fullest (see Miriam W's definitive and authoritative review), but simply walking around the place gave me inspiration. I'd taste some salami, sample a free mini-taco, and a spoonful of tuna salad, and I instantly wanted to create something at home. Viewing several different brands of brie, a rack of various olive oils, bins of spices, and trays of crimson beef with wisps of frost floating from them had me thinking I too could become a grillmaster or chef if even for just one evening in my own kitchen. We did do our shopping on a Steeler Sunday, and despite the teeming mass of customers, we had no trouble with checkout or with finding anything. The staff is genuinely accommodating, so when you can't locate an item...just ask! Benign people with aprons and badges on are everywhere! They lie in wait...wanting to assist and talk with you! There are posher items to be found in the personal care and houseware sections. I was in awe of the shaving kits and the ornamental salt shakers, for example, but if you don't need it, you don't have to buy it. At least that's what my inner angel/home economist tells me. What we needed was what we found along with a mountain more, much of which we didn't have time to completely explore. I'm sure we'll return in the near future. P.S. Ok the market district tries hard it really does......... to cater to a certain income bracket. I have never lived in a city where your supermarket can tell you exactly how much the standard income of the average family or individual is by the store and location you are in. In other words if you're seeking a socioeconomic reading of the part of town you're step into a giant eagle. And poof you have tiny stores cramped spaces zero to no selection $4 gallons of milk in the poorer areas and Voila Sushi bars, whole organic sections, fresh breads and imported Cheeses in the wealthier regions of pittsburgh. Thanks Giant Eagle its not as if I needed a friendly reminder of how much or little money I make when stopping off to pick up some milk on my way home from the gym. But just in case I sure know now. Before you jump in to defend this social class division that I know is equally rife across all areas of pittsburgh. I will just say I have lived in several diverse areas from Rochester ny to salt lake city utah. Most grocery store chains especially the big ones (Wegmans in Ny, Smiths and Harmons) at least made some effort to keep store size and selection consistent through all their locations. With Giant Eagle I get the feeling they are trying to divide people based on income by the items offered in their stores. Then there is price of produce yowza whats that you say giant eagle $6.71 for two heads of broccoli? Unless I buy double what I need at the sale price? Hmm I think not I am getting a headache just thinking of this place of course I have to stop in sometimes but Ill shop as much as I can at other places before i cave to this tyrant of a grocery store. read more

The Market District concept could be more accurately called "Giant Eagle does Wegmans" (those who have been to or are from Erie, Philly, DC/Baltimore, and Western New York will know of what I speak of). Being a big Wegmans fan, I had to trek here while in Pittsburgh to see how much of a ripoff it was. I actually was quite impressed. Granted this location was a conversion, but the prepared foods area was massive and the wifi in the cafe was a nice touch. And yet it still has touches of a normal supermarket without a lot of the razzle dazzle such places have. If the Market District concept ever reaches an area where Giant Eagle and Wegmans compete (Erie, State College, and soon Frederick, MD), it'd be an all-out war of awesome for foodies in those areas! read more

What is there to say about a grocery store, really? But this Giant Eagle seems to be my and my husband's grocery store of choice because it's convenient in the way that it is your one stop shop. Groceries are pricier here than say Trader Joe's or Aldi's but you don't have to store-hop with Giant Eagle, plus you can get fuel perks. So it kind of equals out to the savings you'd get from shopping at the discount grocers, right? On top of groceries, this Giant Eagle has quite the selection of prepared foods and beer. Sometimes when we're lazy, we just eat here and then do our shopping. This occurs quite often, actually. There's a nice hot bar and cold bar, soups, sushi, pizza and BBQ. The food is pretty decent, which I've liked everything I've gotten. However, the price can add up quickly with the hot or cold bar. There's even a Starbucks in here. While the store is open 24 hours, the prepared foods closes in the evenings, around 7:30 or 8 pm. One unique thing I've noticed about this Giant Eagle is that it'll have live musicians play near the cafe sometimes, which is nice to have in the background when you're eating so it doesn't quite feel like you're eating in a grocery store anymore. You can even have a beer or wine with your meal. This is truly your one stop shop in a lot of ways. However, it gets pretty crowded at certain times. I would recommend coming here during off-peak hours so that shopping can be a breeze. read more
