I was curious what shopping at a Giant Food would be like, since their parent company also owns 2 grocery chains prominent in my area of New York, Stop & Shop (same logo even) and Hannaford. It was a combination of plusses and minuses. First, I thought the store was quite clean and well stocked, always a good thing. I would have expected the produce area to be larger though. The meat department was again well stocked and clean, though some of the seafood, particularly the salmon, did not look fresh. They carry their Care One line of personal care items that I buy in my local stores. Prices seem a bit steeper down here, probably a result of the location. But in fairness, not having visited a lot of other grocery stores in the area, I can't say whether these prices are competitive or not. But most items not on sale were typically 10% more expensive than where I shop at home. The parking lot is inadequate for the amount of business they do, and I think they would have benefited from some additional entrances and exits. You do need to proceed with caution and keep a watchful eye when driving through it. read more

Five stars for this Giant! This is definitely my favorite location. The store is always clean, well stocked, and easy to shop in. One of my favorite things is the fresh seafood section -- I love that I can pick up fresh shrimp and have them steam it right there. It makes for such a quick and easy dinner. The staff is always friendly and helpful if you need assistance finding something. Overall, it's just a really well-run store and my go-to Giant for groceries. read more

Thank you, Giant food for coming to the rescue! I was calling all over town to find some chopped liver. Due to the Jewish holiday of Passover most Giant Foods were sold out. I called and spoke to the deli department and I was told they had plenty of chopped liver. So, I hightailed it over and got my chopped liver and about a dozen other things, that I probably didn't need and I was out the door. I took off one star, because I had called customer service twice and they left me on hold for ten minutes and never got back to me. But, I called and pressed the number for the deli and my call was answered promptly and with expertise. Also, the parking lot is a real nightmare, so tread carefully. RATS!! I was late night shopping with my boyfriend and I look behind him to see a rat run across the floor and go underneath the shelf. It was absolutely disgusting and I screamed. A few times I've bought groceries from Giant and I've seen the package slightly open and didn't think much of it. I'm so disgusted. This place needs to be remodeled and some serious pest control. Even looking under the shelves I can see why they have rats. Unopened spoiled rotten food on the ground. You can smell it as you walk in. This place is a health code violation!!!!! read more

My wife and went to the bakery department to order a "Welcome Home" cake for our son in law who is being released from a rehab hospital. The presentation was beautiful. However, there was no one staffing the bakery. We waited for 10 minutes. Finally someone from the deli department told us to go to customer service. We did that, but that area was not staffed also. So I called the store, asked to speak to an operator ... she paged someone to assist us, but no one ever came. We left the store, drove 2 blocks to the Safeway store. A very nice lady in their bakery department assisted us. We placed an order for a large "Welcome Home" cake that we will pick up day after tomorrow. read more

Parking is a bit of a hassle here. The parking lot is somewhat cramped, then again, I don't usually have too much of an issue finding a spot when I do go in. This is the Giant that is located on Arlington Rd in Downtown Bethesda (right next to Bethesda Row). The store itself is usually well stocked with pretty decent produce. It's a bigger Giant... I believe they call it their "Gourmet" giant size. There is a fair amount of self checkout stations at the store, and everyone I've encountered as far as Giant staff is concerned is pretty friendly. One special note: This is one of the Giant's that you can pick up an easy pass at. I'm not sure if that's all Giants now, but I definitely got my easy pass there. That much I remember. Oh! And this Giant has Jewish things. Not a given for all Giants, but it definitely has a nice little refrigerated Jewish section and a dry goods section as well. read more

This is a clean Giant and a bit expensive considering it is in Bethesda. Parking is an issue right in front but there is an extension towards the garage for additional parking. Self service check out lines are a breeze. Displays are clean and organized well enough. Staff has been helpful whenever I had questions. read more

Great Customer Service. I visited this Giant location first time (12/22/18). I visited about 5:30pm. The store was not overly Busy but appeared very well stocked. The store also very good lighting. Ya'll need to be careful when shopping at this particular Giant. There's a light skin Asian lady at the self-checkout who will accuse you of trying to steal as if the raise of food prices isn't already screwing us over and I'm left broke until I get paid. As soon as you start walking through the area, she will secretly peek in your bag. I no longer feel comfortable shopping there because I always make sure to pay, but the workers there are very rude and unprofessional over food of all things! This Giant ran out of space for canned cat food in the pet food aisle so they put it all with the clearance next to the warehouse door. This is misleading because everything else is on clearace. There is nothing indicating that it is not on clearance. Nothing in the cat food aisle indicating the cans are in the clearance section. Also there are no price self-check machines, except 1 where the hand-held scanners are. Otherwise large, well-stocked store. Get member card and add electronic coupons, if you hit 100 pts you get $1 toward next purchase. read more

I ordered a cake from this bakery for pickup on May 9th at 5 PM. When I went to pick up the cake, I had to wait at the bakery counter for over 10 minutes and had to have someone paged twice. When someone finally responded to the page, the indicated that there was no cake ready for me. This person looked around and found my order form with the correct date on it, but the employee had written the wrong day of the week, and did not make the order. Now I had wasted about 20 minutes and had no cake. The employee who started helping me went and found another employee who I presume was the manager and kept explaining over and over how they made the mistake, somehow thinking I didn't comprehend what happened and that by telling me the same thing again and again would make it better. Eventually, they offered 50% off a pre-made cake of my choice. Nothing in the bakery matched my original combination of cake and icing choices and I selected a generic substitute. To add insult to injury, the pre-made cake was not fresh and had to be at least a day old due to how stale and dry the cake was. The entire experience from start to finish was extremely disappointing and I would encourage to purchase your bakery needs from another store. I will not be a customer of this bakery again. read more

This space as a grocery store has come a long way. Their fish department is decent, and their produce is definitely on the better side of produce sections in terms of quality and size. They have lots of good sales, but some things are just ridiculously expensive, like certain juices. Bright and not too crowded. Not claustrophobic at all. Yay! The parking garage can be a nightmare, though. I wish people would learn how to drive, especially in garages that aren't very big. read more

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the pharmacy(with the exception of one or two long time pharmacists) has become scared of its own shadow - and on several occasions has refused to refill for me - a 20 year customer - lawful prescriptions for certain medications, until AFTER the 30 day supply I was prescribed previously has been used up. Though problem is with controlled medications - not opiates, however, prescribed by a doctor with a clean record, no history of over prescription - I yesterday called to confirm when I could refill two prescriptions approaching the 30 day day when I'd run out - and was advised one could e refilled on the 31st day - the second on the 34th day. In short, the pharmacist - a fill-in - as has become more come there - advised it would not fill either until after I had run out, one until 3 days after I had run out. The longtime pharmacist is on vacation - but has always filled these RXs a few days before they're used up - with comports with Federal and state law and is perfectly legal and proper. I 've experienced this same issue at thge Old Georgetown Road Giant pharmacy. I learned that this is in fact in reaction to a pharmacist at at least one of these Giants having been cited by regulators for doing something improper - but the bottom line, long time customers such as me, pay the price. It is impossible to reach Giant customer service to discuss - their website to report complaints and phonelines fail every time I try tor each., So I'm moving all my business, in the thousands of dollars a year, elsewhere. read more

I recently moved to Maryland and went to this grocery store to do some shopping (this store does not exist in New Jersey so I did not have their shopper discount card). I noticed there were several things on sale and some of them required a digital coupon ... I went online to acquire the shopper discount card and take advantage of the digital coupon savings (which were huge) and was having difficulty online. I then went to customer service and a gentleman whose name I believe his name tags said Eric McDonald (I hope I got that right) was just beyond helpful. He physically did a sign up for me and gave me the shopper card but then explained that it takes 24 hours to be able to access things like the digital coupons (which was a bummer because I didn't want to come back to the store for those few items) hetold me that he would cash out my groceries for me and do the necessary override to allow me to still get the digital coupon savings .... this is what I call customer service and this is how you acquire a repeat customer. On another note I appreciated the vast selection of brands as well as the fruit and vegetable options being fresh. The older gentleman in the seafood section was also very helpful (I'm so mad I didn't get his name) he went in the back to find me more crab legs since that was the last day of the sale and there was only one pound of crab available in their refrigerator section. read more

I dont live close but i try to stock up on the good things when i am by this location. Although i miss the jerk chicken boars head meat at the deli, greg put me on to the curry chicken and its actually really good. The deli staff here are attentive and good. This location has an amazing gluten free section. They have the schar selections, udis, enjoy life, store brand, etc. the one by my house lacks in this department. They also have the gf soups in that aisle which are literally hard to find anywhere bt online. The customer service desk reps are always helpful. She has consistently given me the best service I've ever received at any store since I've been in the area. She always knows where everything is located and is very knowledgeable about their inventory and coupons, she's always treated me with the upmost respect and care. Yesterday's (05/14/19 at 04:13 PM) most recent encounter with her compels me to inform you. The occasionally grumpy, unhelpful staffer - a mixed bag at this Bethesda location - is one thing. Something entirely different when a specific employee makes a point of being rude and is plain nasty. Several weeks ago was my first negative experience with the young woman. Not returning my friendly hello, no thank you, no smile, ok, can live with that. I brushed it off as yet another 'no manners, inadequate training by management' issue at this store. I checked my receipt and noticed that she had mistakenly charged me twice for a rather pricey item, wouldn't have noticed otherwise. I brought it up after (!) she had finished with customer. I bag my own groceries to speed things up and don't often keep an eye on cashiers scanning prices. Cashier H. seemed irritated, as though it was my fault somehow. I hadn't expected an apology but this? I didn't engage as I just wanted to get home and she was unpleasant enough as is. Yesterday's encounter was forced, not enough cashiers in place, picked shortest line and only then saw it was her. I never had a cashier push shopping bags I had just placed on belt back at me muttering something to start bagging. Which I do and voluntarily so. I have shopped at your store for the past 35 years, this is my first written complaint. Not only is H. uncouth, she is lazy, aggressive, terribly unfriendly and should be trained in basic customer service etiquette. Look forward to hearing back at your earliest convenience. Sometimes I come here instead of Trader Joe's. I gave Trader Joe's five stars. Why would I choose a five-r over a four-er? Well, TJ's specializes in awesome, but they lack a certain je ne sais quoi. Actually, I do sais quoi! Giant has a way better produce department, and a killer bakery, and multiple self check-out lanes. Annnnnddd.... FRUIT/SALAD BAR OF YUM. I've been known to get bored with the kajillion places to eat in Bethesda. Then I go exploring. I was poking around Giant one day, when bam! I spotted fruit -- rows of pineapple, strawberries, watermelons, peaches and pears, already hacked into bite-size pieces. And on the flip side? Tons of veggies, meat toppings, dressings and condiments. I assembled a feast! And that feast cost me $5.50. As my robotic advisor soothingly instructed me to move my items to the bagging area, I mused on the fickle nature of humanity and the chaos of our modern times. Just kidding. I should have transferred my prescriptions a long time ago, but each time they called to harass my doctor, and promised to place a note in my file to ensure my prescriptions went through smoothly, I thought it would it would improve the next time. I've finally accepted that they are not comfortable filling mental health medications, but I'm genuinely alarmed for others as a matter of parity. read more

Really great service. The pharmacist and manager on staff on Friday night (3/4/22), really went above and beyond their job description. I was followed by a stranger from the street into the Giant, and he proceeded to follow me throughout the isles. Even after giving him a verbal warning, and speed walking around the store multiple times in strange directions, he would not stop chasing me. I went to the pharmacist on duty and barely whispered that I was being followed, and without missing a beat he immediately called the manager and took me aside away from the man. The manager confronted the man and kept him away from me so I could leave the store. Thank you so much and good on the staff for being vigilant and taking safety seriously. So I came here Friday during my lunch break to buy the ingredients for cookies (oatmeal cherry white choc chip). As my friend and I waited for the light to change to cross the street, we looked on at the store puzzled. There were all these flags that said NOW OPEN. I thought to myself...well that's odd...I've been coming here for months! I realized after I walked in what was goin on. They now have those handheld scanners that you use as you shop around the store so when you go to check out, it's much quicker. The scanners are pretty neat and they have these random coupons that you can use while you shop. I had my Yelp bag with me so the lady said I should scan my item, then put in my bag. Seemed simple enough. And it was. When I got to the checkout, I scanned the "end of purchases" scancode and then all of my items appeared on their computer. I paid and left. I have to say, I liked it. I'm not sure how it would work if I had a cart filled with groceries but I guess I'll find out soon enough once I've moved to my new place in Bethesda. I was surprised they didn't check my bag to see if I had missed any items. Perhaps too much trust on the customer here but I assume they have some sort of plan to check guests with larger quantities of groceries. I've heard great things about Giant from my friends that live on the East Coast. Sad to say that it did not live up to the expectation. I was in town for business and one of my coworkers was having a birthday the next day. I walked over to the local Giant store (THIS STORE) and proceeded to the bakery where I was going to order a cake for the next day. Nothing complicated - a sheet cake with an edible printout on top. First off, it took almost 20 minutes to get someone to help us in the bakery, despite having an awkward deli worker look at us at the bakery counter. "Oh, I don't think anyone is over there," says awkward deli guy. "Well, since we have been standing here and the sign clearly says there is someone supposed to be here until 8pm (It was 4:30pm), do you think you could call someone to help us?" Deli guy gets on loud speaker and requests someone come to the bakery for assistance. A team member who was reloading the fresh bread cabinet asks if he can help. We say yes. We've had a good amount of time to consider the cake we were going to buy and we pointed out the one from the book that we wanted. We spent five minutes going over a form, line by line, item by item. I grabbed the sheet from the cake binder that showed the cake we wanted so there wouldn't be any questions come production time. Fast forward to the next day at our designated cake pick-up time... There's a young gal on duty (who seemed quite aloof - not all there). "We're here for pick up!" "For what?" "A cake we ordered yesterday. My name's Courtney. We should have a Princess Sheet Cake ready. The guy we placed our order with yesterday said it would be ready at 5:30pm today." "Oh we don't have any cakes here for pick-up. Are you sure you ordered it from this store?" "UMMMMMM Yeah. 100% sure." "Well there aren't any cakes here - I don't even see any order forms. When was it supposed to be ready?" "Today. Now." "Oh. Well, we don't have it. Sorry." Needless to say, at that point I was really not pleased. Such a hassle to order the cake in the first place and then they didn't even have the cake made? We ended up getting a cake from the freezer nearby and had them write Happy Birthday on it. VERY DISAPPOINTED. VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTED. read more

Even though this Giant was only a few years old, they recently did a remodel. I happened to stop in the morning of their grand re-opening, and was given a $10 gift card! Yay for me. However: -Boo for now having to reorient myself about the location of certain items. -Boo for this store not selling any small-sized milk bottles. -Boo to Giant in general for having discontinued its relationship with Chevy Chase Bank, and there no longer being a Chevy Chase ATM in the store. PNC Bank? Who in the world banks there? On the other hand, this is a large and very clean store with a great selection. read more

Ooooo me likes this grocery store. It's clean, usually well-stocked, and big (unlike most closet-sized DC grocery stores). Today I discovered some bulk bins in the produce section with all sorts of chocolate covered nuts and fruit, and found some of the most heavenly sugar-dusted chocolate-covered toffee almonds. Hows that for a name, eh? And the best part- they were only $3.99 per pound! You would definitely pay closer to $8.99 at a fancy-pants candy or gourmet store. Can't beat it. Points off, however, for not having ANY half-off candy on the day after Halloween. Not a single candy corn or mini Snickers to be found on November 1. Seriously, I searched. I think they must throw it all away, which is a sad thought. So much sugar gone to waste. read more

3.5 stars Clean, well-stocked, friendly staff. During peak hours, the parking lot can get really crowded but if you keep driving past the store/lot, you'll see arrows pointing you towards the garage downstairs. The selection of fresh vegetables and the bakery is a bit lacking but maybe that's just me wanting exotic veggies haha.. The rest of the store is pretty good though. There are 2 redboxes near the checkouts... There are plenty of self-checkout stations, which is nice. read more

This is a great grocery store! I always find just what I need, which is a awesome, especially in the produce section! The store is organized logically and it's easy to find the various sections. I've been here a number of times and the store employees have always been friendly and very friendly, especially when I've been looking for more obscure baking items. The produce has always generally been fresh and they usually have everything else I've needed in stock. One weird thing is that recently (just this past week), they've either run out of or stopped using regular produce bags and have yellow plastic bags instead... not sure why. It's very bizarre to me, and I'm not sure if this change is permanent. Either way, overall I have nothing but positive things to say about this Giant location! read more
