This restaurant is really interesting for its history; it's been around since 1936, and still has many of its original decor features. It is attached to the Alluvian Hotel which has been around just as long. I would say it's good to go to at least once if you're in the Greenwood MS area, if only for the history. The service is always kind but takes a LONG time to get any kind of drinks or food. The food is at best OK. I really enjoy their crawfish dip appetizer, but have had several items on the menu for entrees, including their Delta Catfish filet (the sauce was ok, and the catfish fresh but it was not flavorful), and their Spinach stuffed Manicotti (this was touted as one of their best entrees according to the waitress, but the pasta was over cooked and the flavor was nothing special; I've certainly had much better), which were both subpar. The dessert was decent, but nothing to write home about. I enjoyed their gelato, but it could have just as easily come from a jar purchased at the grocery store. TLDR: I've come to this restaurant several times now (wanted to give it a decent shot since I'm not from the area) and I would go for the history but not stay for the food. It's overpriced for the quality and the service is way too slow. A hidden Delta Mississippi gem! Came to stay at the Alluvian for a wedding, and got to have dinner at Giardina's! A group of 4 of us were seated in our own private room. Completely bound with 3 walls and a curtain. This allowed for privacy for our group dinner - which we absolutely loved. Started with an appetizer of spinach and artichoke dip and the oyster trio. Amazing. Each of us had different entrees, and one friend had a gluten-allergy that the restaurant was able to be very accommodating of! We also shared two bottles of wine. Apparently reservations here book up very quickly, so if you're planning to make a visit be sure to book in advance. We loved every bite! read more

We went to Giardina's on Labor Day for a birthday. First, the restaurant accommodated our party of 10 with short notice. Our service was excellent. The highlights of the meals were the fried asparagus (amazing flavor and such a unique texture element), the chicken parmigiana along with the eggplant parmigiana, the crawfish cheese dip and the veggie flatbread. All so wonderful. The crawfish cheese dip was so creamy flavorful. The veggie flatbread was so fresh and loaded with veggies, very well seasoned. There was one disappointing element to our meal. One person ordered salmon and was asked how they wanted it cooked as in, like a steak: rare, medium rare, medium...and so on. The person said, let the chef cook it in a way they know salmon should be cooked. The salmon came out dry and over cooked. Highly disappointing. If it wasn't for the salmon, definitely a 5 star experience. read more

Great thing about this restaurant is the historic value it holds in the community. The customer service at the front desk was awesome and the waitress had superior Service. My guests and I wasn't thrilled about being seated behind the curtain. The best part of the meal was the old-fashioned cocktail and fried green tomatoes. Went to Giardina's for the first time tonight. Food was amazing. I had the duck sausage gumbo and an order of shrimp Alfredo. Honestly I wasn't expecting much from shrimp Alfredo, but this stuff was great! The atmosphere at the bar has that big city feel in such a small town in Mississippi. I could see how the locals could come here to 'get away'. I can't wait to come back to try the filet and a few other things. This restaurant is within the Alluvian Hotel where we stayed. I had checked and made reservations at the time we booked the hotel and Viking Cooking school. We were seated on time and had no problems. Several people we met at Cooking School had stories of terrible waits and rudeness when they arrived at this restaurant. Seating is very limited because of the curtained booth arrangement and like many places, staffing seems to be short at the moment. Our waitress was new and was good at service but couldn't answer any questions about the restaurant's history or food items. I definitely wouldn't recommend going here without reservations. From the name, I assumed this was an Italian restaurant but the Italian menu items were fairly limited. Steaks appear to be their specialty. My companion tried the eggplant Parmesan which was Ok but the dish was not that great- the pasta and sauce were on the dry side and the spices overpowered the eggplant, just a poor example of a classic Italian dish. The Aged Ribeye was perfectly done and a really great steak, one of the best I've ever eaten. If you enjoy a good steak, I can understand this would be a great restaurant. This was apparently an old local restaurant which was relocated to this hotel. The dining areas are enclosed booths with curtains, similar to another more famous local restaurant, now closed, Lusco's. It is a rather unique dining experience which reminds you of days of prohibition and secretive, sometimes romantic evenings in a small Mississippi Delta town. read more

Worst entree ever...and we've eaten all over the world. First, we were introduced to a new wine less than a year ago (last time we were at the Alluvian) and asked if it was still available. The wait staff checked and was told no, but decided to look themselves and actually found numerous bottles after the substitute was opened. Luckily, the substitute was a vintage we enjoy...just not our first choice. Even the wait staff was confused as to why the bottle we wanted was not offered. I can say the onion rings and ranch dressing on our wedge was good. As for the entree, we were told the menu was new and there were no specials. We asked about the Mahi and Fried Rice. We absolutely love a similar described dish at our favorite restaurant on 30A in Florida and hoped it would be similar. It was NOT. The "fried" rice was a sticky mush that was disgusting. And we are NOT picky eaters. Our waitstaff indicated she had even complained to the kitchen. It was SO BAD, I don't want to ever stay at the hotel again...much less eat at Giardina's! It's one of those places where the menu doesn't even list prices, but if you're willing to splurge, it's well worth it. Very disappointed in a restaurant I've been wanting to go to for years. The private dining rooms are charming and our waitress delightful. I ordered the wilted spinach salad that was very over dressed. So much so that half way through, it was like soup and I couldn't finish. I then had ordered the oysters trio and duck confit over hash. Both were delivered at the same time and not in the three course fashion they were ordered. The Rockefeller lacked seasoning, cream and cheese. They lacked anything that could have made them tasty. By the time I got to the hash, my over cooked sunny side up agh was cold. I also feel if the first ingredient listed is duck, there should be some in the dish. My advice, don't go read more

This place was really disappointing. I think the waitress was given a 12-top at the same time I was seated (I overheard them talking). This meant that she took my order and then was gone. I got my salad, but still hadn't gotten my drink yet. Then I got the wrong wine. Then I got my entree before I got the extra salad dressing that I asked for. The hostess (or maitre d') was nice enough to help in the absence of the waitress, which I appreciated, but overall it was not great--food or service. The waitress finally reappeared to give me my check. And instead of just letting me relax while I finished my wine, she came back about three times to see if I had paid yet. Oh wow! This place is amazing. We could not get a reservation on-line for a Saturday night, but a hotel staff squeezed us in. The place was packed. Their private boots look great. Great spot for dinner when staying at the Alluvian Hotel and enjoying the Fantastic Alluvian Spa. The Calamari (do the special seasoned version instead of the regular - not sure what they call it?) I've had the lamb chops and Brussels Sprouts. A friend of mine has the pasta with Salmon then adds crab and some special spicy sauce that's called "come back sauce". I tried hers and it was yummy! Where do I begin! I have been looking forward to eating here for several weeks. The food is amazing- still disappointed they did not have Gumbo, however more important than the food was the service. As per typical family outings we had to make some major changes. Not to worry- Madeline, Alisha and Jessica went above and beyond to solve our problems! We went here after work one night (from Cleveland). We heard this place was absolutely amazing and after trying the other steak places in the Delta I was pumped for a great meal. The service and ambience of the restaurant is unbeatable. Like so many other restaurants in the Delta this place has some how stood the test of time and not broken down and remodeled itself into another modern day clone restaurant. Went to celebrate a Birthday. It was no celebration once seated it took 1 hour to get water/ drinks and menu. They were out of white wine. Calamari Appetizer was brought with meal STONE cold. The veal was nothing more than a minute stake heavily breaded with at least 1/2 inch on each side of breading and fried in the fryer. Shrimp Scampi-Boiled Shrimp on Angel hair pasta with parsley sprinkled on top. No sauce, nada! New Calamari arrived but so overcooked it is not edible, I do not like chewing on rubber bands of fish! Ambience is loud noise and constant breaking of dishes, bottles, glasses and plates dumped on floor. Not my idea of a classy Restaurant. I left hungry after the 2 1/2 hour ordeal. Wonderful place to eat! All of the dishes on the menu are well-planned and cooked so well. Also, being joined to the Alluvian Hotel, there is always a good time when choosing to eat at Giardina's. So I understand this is a must do restaurant. Why, I have no idea? The good: The little rooms with the curtains are interesting and harken back to a different time. The staff up front was friendly. The not so good: The food. My husband had pasta and meatballs. Neither was very good. I had a veal dish that the server recommended. It was overly salty, and really had no other flavor coming through. My husband also had a salad, probably the highlight of dinner and it was just a typical salad. We each ordered a glass of wine. The glasses our server poured the wine into needed to be cleaned better. Overall even though they get points for being friendly it was a lackluster experience. read more

If there were minus stars, I would love to give them. I did talk to the manager last night, and told her I would post this review. Never having been there, and wanting to support the hotel we were staying at, the Alluvian, we thought, great let's do the local restaurant, as it had great reviews. Well, I have eaten better at Wendy's. The hostess. Not very welcoming, rather, " sigh", we are fully booked on the closed partitions (what is that?), you will have to eat on an open table? (as opposed to?) Not having a clue, we said, sure we eat at an open table. She then proceeded to slam the menus on top of each other, very professional, making us feel ever so cherished. Guided us to our table, and we waited, and waited...I guess OPEN TABLE means, you are the least welcome customer and you will wait for your server, for our horrible food, and you will wait some more. Finally, Jasmine came. Didn't ask if it was our first time, if we had any preferences, nope... Didn't welcome us either. Sigh... Let the waiting begin. After we got our menus, we ordered our food. Asking Jasmine questions about the food was a mission to Mars, basically non existing. The girl had no clue why she was there, and what the menu entailed. She did mention a special, but that was about all the conversation we got out of her. To make this a short review, I am going to sum up what we complained to the manager about. A) Service and welcoming non existent and horrible. Jasmine was poorly if at all trained, if she was, well, she needs to switch jobs, she clearly hates her job. The shrimp in bourbon sauce were so salty and drenched in a "Knorr" or "Maggi" like marinade, we had to sent the dish back, the salt is still in my teeth. The arancini with lamb, lamb hardly there, were overcooked, and the marinara sauce was super bitter, some herb had been cooked to death. The flounder at a whopping $28 was very salty and the Polenta (drumroll) was actually good. The bread pudding was ok. The cocktail was ok, and the wine, well you would needed a lot of it, to wash the food down. The manager seemed to be concerned about our problems with the food, but Jasmine turned out to get even with us, we couldn't get the water refilled, it took us about 15 -20 min to get her attention. She just snobbed us. B) Quality of food was mediocre, the techniques used were not properly followed and everything was so SALTY it was disgusting. C) They comped our dessert and half of the arancini, which was great, but it wasn't enough, not to write this review. There is no attention to detail, no customer service, you are just a number, the food is not good and the presentation is just blah, no imagination for the money you have to pay. Our bill was for over $135, I have to work 2 days for that. I would never go back, nor recommend this restaurant to my friends. Please save your money and stay and go somewhere else. You expect impeccable service from a restaurant charging the price they do for food...they do not deliver...after we were seated it was almost 10 min before anyone came by to even take our drink order or bring us water. Then twice during the meal we had to get up and go find someone to refill our tiny water glasses. This was a business meeting after we had eaten we needed to talk business for a little bit. On our trip through Mississippi, we read about this restaurant in Travel and Leisure magazine and I begged to come here. It was well worth the travel! Each table is in it's own private room! Amazing fancy, homey feeling. This place is elegant, and romantic. The fried green tomatoes were wonderful!!! The chicken parm wasn't anything special- but it's not really an Italian restaurant. Don't hesitate. High quality food for small town Mississippi. My wife and I were headed to the Crystal Grill for dinner and to our surprise were met with a sign informing us that they were closed. So we headed over to Giardina's for one of the best meals I have had in a while. I had the surf and turf in which the steak was cooked to my liking, great crust, which is difficult to do with a busy restaurant. My wife had their shrimp scampi with house made pasta. I tried it and unlike most pasta dishes had lots of flavor. I highly recommend the ricotta spinach as a side and the pound cake for dessert. Price wise it was fairly affordable. Awful! The service was horrid. The hostess (who was great!) ended up taking our drink and appetizer order and bringing it to us since our waitress was no where to be found. When she finally showed up she was rushing us to get back to the bigger table behind us. She took our order, brought our food and disappeared. I had the linguine with chicken and pecan pesto. It was absolutely tasteless with 4 tiny pieces of chicken. There was so little pesto that the pasta was still white and there was no salt at all in the dish. We had to ask for bread and when we finally got it, it was cold, chewy and tasteless. We never got our 2nd drink order and it took 30 minutes to get our ticket and to go boxes. I am distressed that I am the first to review this fine restaurant. Let me first state that I ate here while traveling with a group and that the food and service was simply impeccable. The atmosphere of the restaurant is exceptionally comfortable as the restaurant is arranged into a series of private eating spaces. Our group clearly took up the largest of these spaces (there were 38 of us), but every dining area (as far as I could tell) is like a private dining room. The service was understated, but highly professional. Perhaps most impressively (but not really, because it is the food which is most important in the end) was the fact that 38 were served promptly and courteously a four course meal and all the food was freshly prepared and in a perfect consistency. My meal: started with an appetizer of broiled shrimp, beautifully spiced and cooked just to the perfect firmness. The salad was light and fresh. The entree of broiled Hammerjack (a fish I have to admit I'd never heard of before) was served with a white wine shallot cream sauce..... very light and subtly complementary to a piece of fish that was cooked to a perfect medium-rare consistency (a difficult task with a thick filet). Fresh grilled asparagus was (again) cooked to the perfect al dente consistency and seasoned lightly with salt only. Delicious and a perfect complement to the fish. Desert of Delta Delight was, admittedly a bit heavy, but that was by design. A desert that I shouldn't have eaten was simply irresistible. My dad and I tried Giardina's last night for the first time. We'd made reservations the day before, requesting a private booth. It was initially a bit tight (they had only one left) but chairs were easily repositioned for comfortable sitting. Although enclosed on all sides, the walls did not extend to the ceiling, and our next door neighbors (and others) were frequently loud. We chose to ignore them as much as possible and instead focused on the very good (but not perfect) service and food. My dad ordered a very nice "small" Cobb salad that was nonetheless sizeable and quite eye appealing. He enjoyed this along with the house vinegarette. I ordered the "Delacata" (fancy for catfish), blackened. We also split an order of steamed vegetables (predominantly squash). The vegetables were quite tasty but were outdone by the fish, which was blackened correctly and might have been the best piece of fish I've ever eaten. The meal was further enhanced by slices of warm, savory, dense bread. Prior to ordering, our server was very patient with our questions and answered each to our satisfaction. She even nudged me to the Delacata over the catfish cakes, which other reviewers apparently liked, too. Amidst this relaxing evening, two disappointments stood out. The Giardina has no beer on tap. Since it is attached to the exclusive Alluvian hotel where thoughtfulness and graciousness are bywords, this would seem a major oversight. Not that beer on tap is prevalent in Greenwood (Webster's and Mexican places offer a few lackluster selections), but the arguably finest establishment in town -- and regionally and nationally known -- shouldn't be so lazy as to offer the same twist-off bottles that can be found at Applebee's. And even Applebee's (30 minutes away in Grenada) has a handful of offerings on tap! Finally, although we enjoyed our server who was, as noted above, very helpful, she fell down on one salient point. My dad and I both had ordered a cup of seafood gumbo as an appetizer. Both tasted very good, but his contained several chunks of fish while mine was bereft of any discernible seafood, aside from a shrimp shell that should have been removed in the kitchen. I gently pointed out the issue three separate times to our server, but never received any satisfactory remedy. She apologized each time I broached the subject and twice told us they were "slammed." At no time did she offer a replacement cup of gumbo, nor did she remove its charge from the check ($96 total after 18% tip). So, 4/5 stars for (1) a surprisingly tone-deaf response to my complaints about the gumbo (by an otherwise professional, pleasant, and helpful server) and (2) the lack of beers on tap -- especially Guinness, which bottles do not do justice -- from the most illustrious restaurant within 100 miles, possibly more. read more

Celebrating a milestone birthday at The Alluvian and dinner at Giardina's. The entire evening was perfect. The food and service were phenomenal - brown seared scallops were the best I (and my husband) have ever tasted. September dinner special was the pecan crusted Salmon and it was delicious. Besides the food, the best part of our evening was our server Bridgette. She was professional, pleasant and her beautiful smile and personality made our evening even more special. My husband and I came for a long weekend to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed our food! Also, it was quaint and private and was a nice change from the loud restaurants we've been to lately. We had the Stuffed Portobello Mushroom and Fried Shrimp for appetizers. Both were outstanding! For our entree, we had Lasagna and Angel Hair Pasta with grilled chicken, olive oil and basil pesto. Again, both were excellent! We will patron this restaurant again when we return. Ate at Giardina's tonight and was underwhelmed. There were bread plates on the table, but no bread. We didn't get any wine, but they left the wine glasses on the table. For being a supposed fancy restaurant, we were not well attended to. Our water glasses were often empty, and while we were in a private booth with a curtain, each time our server left and closed the curtain, she never closed it all the way. We then got the bread pudding to go, and they brought us the dessert, but did not include any silverware. When we asked for silverware and said none was included, they were not apologetic in anyway. We were celebrating our anniversary and they knew that. We were told happy anniversary once, and it wasn't until after we paid and were leaving. Overall, for being a nice restaurant I felt like I was being rushed the entire time, and wasn't appreciated as a customer. read more
