You may have seen the plans to build an external glass elevator (SW corner of the building) which will lead to a top level visiting area - for tourists and Yelpers alike. Looking North you have views of John Hancock, Trump Tower. Looking south and East - you have stunning views of Millennium Park, the curvature of the planet (view from the 80th floor), the lake, the Bean, etc. The parking garage below is so convenient but please allow time for security, which is good. Great restaurants and places to eat within this building - Starbucks, Market Thyme, AuBon Pain, Sopprafina and Jimmy Johns. The flags of our 50 states adorn the front area and there's a beautiful fountain out front. The lobby area is modern, yet inviting. It's also connected to the Pedway, so you can get to ORD (via the Blue-line) or other places in the loop, without ever having to be exposed to the elements.

Giddings Plaza is the center of the area. On a beautiful summer day like today, it is filled with parents and babies, children playing, people having lunch, and even someone like me, who uses a day off to enjoy the whole panorama. Lincoln Square has a diverse population that's best seen on Thursday evenings when the farmer's market is operating, and the free concerts take place in the Plaza. It really feels like you're in a small, friendly town. The area has restaurants (many, many), an independent bookstore (BookCellar), a fantastic deli (Gene's Sausage Shop), independent and unique stores (Merz Apothecary, Eclectricity, Gallimaufry Gallery, and more), coffeeshops, a wine shop (Fine Wine Brokers), entertainment (Davis Theatre, Old Town School of Folk Music, free events sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce), a large park district (Welles Park), a big public library (Sulzer Branch) -- just too many pluses to list here. The neighborhood features plenty of housing, without feeling like you're living in one of those high-rise caverns alongside Sheridan Road. There are apartments, condos and single family homes. And the neighborhood luckily escaped the worst of the housing boom - there are a few McMansions around here, those hulking monsters that fill up their lots with not enough land left to place a flower pot - but not nearly as many as in other neighborhoods or suburbs. It still maintains the old Chicago 'hood character. The one thing that may develop into a problem is parking. Thursday night is already challenging in the area, since the Market fills a parking lot. Now that Lincoln Square Athletic Club has opened, there will be a lot more people coming into the area with their cars. On the nights when Old Town School has a big concert, parking is already an issue. Old Town School is expanding into a much larger, new building across the street from its current location, and you can be sure that will add stress to the parking issues. But for me, I love it. Nights on our block are quiet and peaceful. But when we want action, summer or winter, we can find whatever we want in Lincoln Square.

It's far enough north from much of the city congestion, has a true neighborhood feel amongst an urban surrounding, and still manages to maintain a good amount of it's German culture. It's truly "A village in a city." Several German businesses are still alive and booming with pride: Chicago Brahaus, Merz Apothecary, Lutz Continental Café, Huttenbar, the Chicago branches of DANK HAUS (The German American Cultural Center) and the Niedersachsen German Club, to name a few. The Chamber of Commerce does a lovely job in making sure the neighborhood maintain's this "life" with many festivals and events like the SpringRavenswood Run, May Fest, Fold & Roots Festival, Apple Fest, German Fest, and the Christkindl Market. I love exploring the neighborhood whether it is sitting in a lovely cafe reading a book, strolling past the many shops or watching the kids play by the fountain Square.

Full disclosure -- I am on the Board of Directors of the Chamber and have been so for several…read moreyears. I also own a boutique in the Bucktown area. I cannot say enough good things about the Chamber or the people who run it and make it a lively resource for the businesses in Wicker Park and Bucktown. From the networking events to the new member luncheons, the sidewalk sale to the SummerFest, the WPBCC gets it done and makes it happen. The Executive Director and her office staff are truly committed to really promote the area and the business that make up Wicker Park and Bucktown. They handle all sorts of complicated community situations with grace and aplomb. Dealing with the aldermen, the business owners, and the residents cannot be fun or easy but they make it look like a cakewalk. The Chamber orgazines all kinds of media outreach opportunties, from internal e-newsletters to aggressively distributed literature about the local cultural and shopping opportunties. The Chamber provides a liason to the city's governmental offices as well; I met Mayor Daley as a Chamber representative to discuss the area's overall curb appeal and how the city could help to spruce it up. That was rad! I would recommend any independent business to join this Chamber and get involved. I can definitely say my business has been positively affected by my association with the Chamber, and I plan to stay an active member as long as my shop is open. I heart the Chamber!

The Kluczynski building is part of a larger federal complex. It shares a plaza with the downtown…read morepost office, and across the street is the Dirksen federal courthouse, with the three forming the Federal Plaza. It is architecturally significant because it is a building designed by Mies van de Rohe, along with the other buildings. One thing that is somewhat distinct, and pleases the part of me that likes things symmetrical and neat, is that the seams of the building line up with the stones used in the plaza surrounding each building. My understanding is that this was done to establish a cohesion between the three buildings, even though they're separated by Dearborn Street. I absorbed some Mies history during the 11 years I worked for the university at which he remains the most famous person associated with it (even over 50 years after his death). The Kluczynski building is classical Mies architecture. The first floor is recessed from the rest of the building, and is fully wrapped in glass. There's no offices really on this floor, as is the case in so many of his other buildings, where the first floor is almost always a common space. Black steel and glass that rises 45 stories into the air is typically Miesian. In addition to being a Mies building, the Flamingo by Alexander Calder--one of Chicago's most recognizable pieces of public art--is located in the plaza between the Kluczynski building and the post office. This building houses offices for several different federal organizations: Labor, the Passport Agency, the federal credit union, the offices for the senators for Illinois, OPM, etc. You'll absolutely need ID when entering this building so come prepared.

The CPL has some great events, which I knew before I had a baby, but I had obviously not…read moreinvestigated their kids programs at that time. Now my time is really her time and I have been checking out what the various CPL branches have to offer to get us out of the house, socializing, and learning. Our calendar is getting increasingly packed as we plan to visit several of the CPL's 81 branch libraries. This week we visited the Logan Square branch for both Tummy Time and Story Time with Ms. Erica in the community room and it was great. There were 10 or so other baby-parent pairs. At the tummy time program, most of the children were on the younger side since I don't think babies need tummy time once they can crawl (although there were a few walkers there), and story time was more older children though I still would take my seven week old so she could hear and learn. The librarian had some rhymes and songs ready for the kids, and read a few books as well. Some of the songs were in both English and Spanish. The tummy time program was scheduled for a half hour but she went another 20 minutes at least, which was great for us since I can't tell time. I definitely appreciate her being generous with her time! Story time must be popular because there were two back to back sessions scheduled and I noticed the first one was really packed. I'm not sure how proficient the libarian is with a guitar (she may be a virtuoso for all I know), but she had one there and Erica shares her talents with little ones by playing the guitar for them, using it to accompany the songs we sang along to. This morning she let children strum the guitar on their way out. As an added treat, there was a bubble machine that Erica turned on and the kids really loved it. I think mine is too little to yet understand what they were but she did seem intrigued. And I appreciate that Erica offered to take a photo of me and my bambina after the program was completed (thank you!). I don't live in Logan Square, and even though there are at least ten branches closer to us than this one I would love to visit and attend as long as my little one is not too crabby to get here (it's about 20 minutes away from us). Erica was very welcoming, as was another library employee who greeted us whilst we were waiting for the second story time to begin. This library is about the same size as most of the other branches and has parking for 15-20 cars which is certainly helpful. I almost missed it, honestly; maybe it was just me but it was kinda hidden. There's also street parking which appeared to be free as well. (As an aside, I recently realized that I've been mistaken in calling many of the libraries small; I've been thinking in terms of Sulzer Library, my neighborhood library, which is one of the three regional libraries; rather than compare them to Sulzer, the non-regional branches should be compared to one another and this one is reasonably sized from that perspective.) Across the street is a coffee shop called Sip of Hope, where all proceeds go to suicide prevention efforts, so if you need coffee before or after you will find no more convenient spot to satisfy that vice. Probably an unexpected FYI, but this branch has Narcan available for free. I took a box since I've been meaning for years to buy some and keep it with me in case I'm somewhere where someone appears to be overdosing. I know I've seen it at other branches but sometimes the dispenser boxes are empty and I'm not sure if this has been rolled out to every branch yet, but it's a great community service.

Thankfully, the experience was still a positive one thanks to the security guard, Tyree. He was extremely helpful and provided clear directions to get me where I needed to go. Tyree had a great personality and was very friendly--not just to me, but to everyone coming through the lobby. It's always nice to see someone take pride in their job and treat people with kindness. Even though I was in the wrong place, I left with a good impression of the building and its staff.
