The name of this salon speaks for itself. James is extremely talented and passionate! You won't find a stellar hair stylist like him in Marin County. My kids are multi-racial, and this county is not as diverse as other Bay Area counties, so we were thrilled to find this hidden gem, which is no longer on "A" Street behind Safeway btw. James is also a perfectionist. He also works on Sundays, which is hard to find in Marin. Actually, he works seven days a week. He ensures all his clients are satisfied with their hairstyle. My daughter was ecstatic to find James through word of mouth. She made an appointment to relax her hair before going back to College in the East Coast. The outcome was natural silky smooth hair, only a professional has this kind of finesse. I wouldn't even know where to start if I purchased hair products from a store; I barely brush or dye my own mane. James is super patient with all my questions, and I ask many questions. James will give helpful advice to my daughter on how to maintain the silkiness. She is a very satisfied customer and will return on her school breaks. If you're looking for an excellent stylist who's honest, willing to listen, communicate effectively, reliable, creative, feasible, and skillful, I highly recommend James. If you like waiting for an hour for a hair cut then this is your place. I think the hair style was gonna be good, but he needs to speed up his hair cutting skills, otherwise nobody has time to just sit and wait for a simple haircut. Maybe I'm not the right customer for this place, but be aware the time commitment. Edit: I changed my review to 4 stars from 2. Nothing has changed, I just don't want to discourage people from paying a visit. Self starting a business is hard and it takes a lot of commitment from the owner. I brought each of my son's to James on two different occasions. He did a fabulous job. The boys are ten and twelve and they have very different hair. One has a lot of hair but it's very silky and fine. The cut James gave him was the best he's ever had. The other son has a lot of hair also but it's thick and coarse so a different style was required. Again, he did such a great job on the cut. Jake's is patient and very specific. I've had 4 or at most 5 barbers over the last 50 years. That's a problem when you move to a new community. I thought I had a step up on the problem when I took photos of the great job my last haircutter did just before I left Orange County for Marin County. I found a highly rated haircutter, but I left my photos at home. She was very nice, but she must have worked for the Marines. 2 months later, I was ready to try again. The time I brought my pictures. I went to Yelp and found James, and his story seemed to good to be true. So I called him and asked what he charged. $25 for my haircut and my beard cut. I made an appointment for about 3 hours later. Apparently, he had an opening earlier, so he texted me, unsolicited, and said he had an earlier appointment. (Thoughtful!) As I was parking my car on a fairly busy street, 8 minutes before my appointment, he called me to explain that I would have to walk up 2 flights of stairs. That was good because there was no way that I would have identified a barber shop from the door itself. I'm 80. I huffed and puffed. James was waiting for me in the 3 chair shop, and then he looked at my pictures, and went to work. The shop was clean. The music was acceptable. Beethoven, it wasn't. But, it sure could have been worse. He is meticulous and he absolutely wants to please. He asked how I wanted just about every phase, and as a layman, all I could do was point to the pictures. The real connoisseur is my wife. She could not have made it up the stairs, but I could, and I'm not in shape.... except for my hair. I don't know about Mikey, but Lindy likes it! It's back to what I was looking for before I was shanghaied into the Marines. I wanted to leave James a $5 tip but I only had 2 twenties and a five, so I left him 2 twenties, a five and the three singles I had in my wallet. Then I went down the two flights of stairs, got change, gathered my strength, and walked back up. I handed James the $5 and asked for the ones back. Without cracking a smile, he said...
