Piper is wonderful! I've gone to her for my haircuts for about half a year now, and am never disappointed. She understands my curl pattern, and I'm happier with my hair than I've ever been. Ask about the hair bonding treatments, they leave my head feeling sooo silky and strong. The salon is clean, modern, exactly what you'd expect from Aveda. Prices are cheaper than other private salons if you don't do any of the add-ons. However, I recommend getting spa services every once in a while! I want to start by saying Piper did my hair and was patient, kind, and super helpful with my many questions for the styles I wanted to use for the Cindy Lopez wedding and the group I was with at the Salon Square One (South Fourth St location) in Columbus Ohio, on August 19th, 2023. Piper was nothing short of phenomenal with me! Unfortunately, the good time I had, and excellent work by Piper was tainted by the front desk who we were working with as a party. Oftentimes they would come back to alert us that someone's stylist was ready, to find when we walked up that they were not. People would be followed into the back to make sure we were paying them immediately (which I think could have come from a good place to help us not rush them afterwards, but the hospitality was not there in how they were demanding this and pulling folks to the front.) I observed a few moments of short and curt behavior that was not welcoming or hospitable to our party getting ready that day for the big event. I was aghast to hear they had complaints about our behavior. While I was in the front getting my hair done, or at the desk to pay, I was unable to hear anything from the private room, so to hear we were perceived "as a zoo" was not only insulting but also confusing to me. We had our own cleaning supplies and trash bags and were careful to keep things organized and as clean as we could. I only heard the members of our party being respectful with the ladies and stylists. As much as I would love to recommend Piper for other curly haired, ethnic folks looking to have their hair styled, I cannot recommend anyone to go to this salon and be looked down on by the front desk workers. read more

Unfortunately I waited 20 minutes after my scheduled appointment time for my nail appointment to start. I was getting my nails done for a trip to Mexico. I got them done on Thursday and it's only Tuesday and this just happened. They were dip nails so I thought they'd last more than 5 days. I'm honestly really upset, as I paid 70+ dollars and my nail just split off. I have no idea when or where this happened, so it must not have been with much force that it broke off. Now I have to endure the rest of my trip with this broken nail, jagged and scratching me, and I will have to get them taken off as soon as I get home because it looks terrible. This review is for the host staff for square one. I was with the Cindy Lopez party preparing with a wedding group and we were using the back room to celebrate and get ready for the event on 8/19. The staff up front were not great with communication, when we first arrived informing us that stylists were ready but then were not, but knowing we were a bigger party, I understood the need to be flexible and understanding to the staff assisting us that day. As the day went on and we were set to take photos with the photographer, it was overheard that the videographer was not allowed to work on location, which I thought was odd, that a photographer could be there but not a videographer. While we were gathering together for photos, the group was using the furniture in the space to take photos. We were staging ourselves on a couch and due to old age, the couch did break, but we calmly removed ourselves from the faulty furniture to finish our photos and dress before the wedding. Before we had left I was informed that the coordinator of the location had contacted the bride and stated that our group was acting like a "Zoo" which again I thought was odd since we never met the coordinator that day nor were we being disrespectful to the space. As we were preparing to leave the establishment the front hostesses said some not-so-nice things to the bride as she was making her way to her wedding. My (at-the-time) fiancé and I paid for a series of services at Square One Salon and Spa on S. Fourth St. We had requested use of a bridal suite that the salon has on property for my fiancé, her mother, my mother, and the entire bridal party to use on the wedding day to prepare for the wedding and receive hair services. As part of this process there was a deposit required by the Salon to reserve the space, which could be used towards several required services in the weeks leading up to the big day. I used the deposit towards my own wedding haircut, and of course we used it on my wife's hair prep and hair the day of the wedding. The day of the wedding, the women all used the suite to get their hair done, have some wine and snacks, and get photos and videos taken of their process. This was all detailed explicitly with Whit, the store manager, in the months leading up to the event. All of this was approved by Whit, as I sat on two phone calls with him, and my wife has an extensive email chain between Whit and herself. For reasons we don't fully understand, the front door staff at the salon were completely unaware or apprehensive about our event. They would rush the girls to the front desk to pay immediately after receiving services as if they would walk out on their bills; they would enter the room and stare at them like they were going to steal anything not tied down; a sofa broke when the girls simply sat down on it (caught on video), and the staff only cared about the sofa and not my mother-in-law who is in a cast and was on the faulty furniture; a videographer and photographer arrived (again, pre-arranged), and the staff acted like it was illegal for them to be present. Every detail which was discussed in writing beforehand was treated like it was completely forbidden. I do not understand why Whit the manager did not communicate any of it with the staff that day. But, to make it all worse, Whit decided to call my fiancé near the end of the event to yell at her and call her multicultural bridal party (again, including my wife, mother, and mother-in-law, all women of color) "a zoo", to yell at her because apparently the Assistant Store Manager and front door clerk both kept contacting Whit to complain about the bridal party event and invent stories about what was happening. This bigoted and racist behavior is inexcusable. It is important to make clear that the entire event is caught on camera and documented via store cameras and personal phones and the professional documentation. To add to this absolute dumpster fire of a response from the Salon, I and my wedding coordinator arrived to discuss this situation with the store manager Whit two days later. He was incredibly defensive and aggressive, and only after discussing the situation calmly with him did he calm down and admit that there was a mistake from the salon. He agreed that a full refund and apology from the salon should occur, but that he had to clear it with the company owner Doug Henderson. So, the coordinator and myself waited for a reply, only (after reaching out a second time) to be told quite the opposite from Doug: that he would refuse to speak with us about the matter as we were a "third party"! I PAID for these faulty services, I am not a third party. Unacceptable. Horrible business, and cowards. They had my last review taken down, so I'm making clear I paid for these services and even received them directly. read more

I am saddened to be writing this review after witnessing the horrible treatment the management of Salon Square One (South Fourth St location) gave to Cindy Lopez Olaya on her wedding day (08/19/23, between 11 AM and 3:45 PM, to be specific). I will preface by saying that it was only management we had an issue with, who seemed to be uncomfortable around our party from the start. All the stylists were absolutely fantastic and kind and I would hate to see them affected by this. As one of her bridesmaids, I showed up to this salon and went to the suite we had reserved for the bridesmaids, maids of honor, mothers, and the bride. We had a fantastic time, shared some drinks and snacks but were mindful as to not make a mess, be loud, etc. We were polite to the staff at all times, and I was a little weirded out by the ladies at the reception desk who would come in and out of the room, sometimes to let us know our stylist was ready for us, but other times, for no apparent reason. I thought maybe they would ask if we needed anything, but that didn't happen, or at the very least, I did not hear them ask. So it very much felt that they were just checking on what we were doing or were not trusting of our party. Two bridesmaids asked them for water and apparently they seemed annoyed they did. After our hair appointments (again- all stylists were WONDERFUL, professional, polite and kind, please know this does not go towards them), the photographers showed up. As we were all trying to get a picture together, we decided to sit down at one of their sofas, which unfortunately, and to OUR SURPRISE, broke down. We were shocked and worried, but luckily, no one was hurt. When management showed up, none of us was asked personally if we were ok. As someone who has been working in the service industry for several years, I completely understand how aggravating it can be that a guest has broken down a piece of furniture, but this was an unfortunate ACCIDENT. We weren't jumping on it, we weren't being disrespectful or not being careful. We SAT DOWN, and the sofa gave away. When the lady who seemed to be the assistant manager entered the room, she didn't really seem worried about anyone's status but just focused on the sofa. I saw her exchange a few words with the photographer, but didn't really hear the conversation. Later on, she came back to the room as we were ready to leave, and the bride was trying to gather her belongings. She tried to talk to her, to which the bride replied that because she was on the way to her own ceremony, she couldn't have a conversation at the moment with her about the sofa, but that she would gladly have a phone conversation with her another time. Since the salon had her contact information, card number on file, etc (something she also reminded the manager of) that was a conversation that could happen at a different time. The manager replied "I guess", to which the bride replied "Is there a problem?", and then the manager said "No, there's not a problem". At that moment I stepped away (I was standing close to them), because the tone of this woman just made me uncomfortable as she was visibly more upset about a sofa than everyone in that room and now was giving my friend a hard time. After that exchange I finished gathering my things and exited the salon. Upon arriving to the wedding venue, I was shocked to hear the managers of the salon had called the bride to immediately yell at her and not even ask what happened, and proceeded to say we had been "zoo animals from the beginning", which is not only false and outrageous, but a pretty well known racist remark, especially considering the multicultural nature of our group. What a horrible comment and way to mistreat someone on her wedding day, and way to disrespect the entire bridal party. Lastly, I would like to say that beyond the shock and anger this incident caused, I must say I'm confused. How exactly were we "zoo animals"? Every single one of these women was polite and respectful to the room and the staff. And even if we hadn't been (and again, we WERE), there is literally no behavior that justifies making such a remark. Do you think it's a reasonable and professional move to call the bride as she is making her way to the venue and open your statement by yelling a racial slur? Shame on you. Also, what were your expectations? What was it that made it unbearable for the two ladies at the front desk to interact with our party? Were you expecting us to sit down and stare at the ceiling for 4 hours? I understand you're upset about a sofa, but you were lucky no one was hurt because that would have been on you. A sofa doesn't break down like that unless it's in poor condition. So besides that, what was so wrong that we did? In which way or form were we "zoo animals from the start"? Explain yourselves. I'm just perplexed at the behavior of management, feeling outraged by their comments, and sad for those who have to work with them. read more

For $80, my mani lasted 2 days. Pedi was good and took care of most problem issues. Not enough attention to nipping/shaping up cuticles on top or bottom. Pedi looks 2 weeks old at 3 days for the cuticles pulling back up and not being trimmed. Same with manicure. read more

They say first impressions are everything. I'm new to the area and was looking to find a place to establish getting my haircut. I keep my hair short, so I like to have it cut every six weeks. I made an appointment at Square One based on the reviews. After driving over an hour to come into Columbus, I arrived at my apartment only to find I was not on the books. I showed the receptionist my email confirmation. She looked me up by name and dryly said, "Oh sorry, they told me they called everyone. Your stylist is out sick." I did not get a phone call to cancel. I wasn't given any options or suggestions and was left to try and find an appointment at 2:00 on a Saturday. Ugh! Worst pedicure I have ever had outside of Marysville Walmart. First when I called I was given the price of $36 so I scheduled 2 appointments. Then both pedicures turned out AWFUL. The salt from the salt scrub wasn't rubbed off my legs and the French tips were uneven, not even close to semicircles and one of my nails was ground to a literal point (as seen next to my pinkie toe). To add insult to injury I was charged $93 ($5 extra for the scribbled white lines) for both not $72 as promised on the phone. The perpetrator actually told me that French tips were the worst for her and thanks for letting her practice on me. I did ask her to redo the big toe and because I didn't want to be there all night I didn't say anything when it came out worse than the first attempt. The employees, Missy and Julie were very rude to my entire birdal party, even getting irritated when asking about water. They truly did not seem to want us there from the very beginning. This is not a safe place for people of color and I would highly recommend going somewhere else. They told us that we were a zoo and that we were awful ON THE DAY OF MY WEDDING. Also someone fell off the couch and instead of asking people if they were okay they literally said "I don't care is the coach okay?" Don't get your nails done here. The experience was great until the end. My nail tech was phenomenal, but there are no drying stations in the salon so I felt a bit rushed at the end. They have a fast drying spray they put on them, but my nails were still wet because the top coat had been applied less than a minute before I was escorted to the counter to pay. One hand was immediately ruined getting out my wallet. Then I had to put my coat on. By the time I got to my hotel room only 2 blocks away, all but 3 nails were ruined. Some of them also bubbled during the drying process. That's over $65 (removing gels, regular non-gel manicure, and 20% tip) down the drain. read more

I got a massage from Patrick today and it was amazing! I called day-of because I'm here from out of town for a couple of days and they managed to fit me into the schedule. I came in complaining of neck pain, so Patrick and I decided to do an upper body focused massage. He has very strong, intuitive hands, and always managed to find the spots that needed it most. He used essential oils and periodically made sure I was doing okay. I would definitely recommend Patrick for a massage if you're in the area! read more

I recently got my haircut at Square One after getting a coupon for $25 off. It was close to my apartment, I needed a cut, and I've yet to find a place in Columbus that I like. So, why not? I called and was able to get an appointment for later in the same week. I was given the option of a less experienced stylist for a lower price or a more experienced barber, Ron. The receptionist said Ron specialized in men's styles more and I had a coupon so I decided to give him a try. My appointment was for 6:30pm on a Thursday but I arrived a few minutes early. They weren't too busy (maybe 3 other clients) and they were able to take me right away with no wait. They took my coat and offered me a drink as well. Ron listened to what I wanted, interpreted my non-stylist speak,and gave me a great cut exactly how I wanted. He friendly but not overly chatty which I appreciated. He was quick and professional but I never felt like he was rushing to get me out of the chair. The cost was $35 but with my $25 coupon it only ended up being $10 + tip. (I think the less experienced stylists cost $20-25 typically). They definitely cater to a nicer client than your typical men's barber shop (ugh, Great Clips, Sports Clips, etc are all terrible) so it was nice to feel a little special. It's a modern salon though, so don't expect an old school experience. They still handled my conservative cut with ease and didn't try to up-sell me any crazy products or put gel in my hair that I didn't ask for. A hair cut is a personal thing but I think Square One did an excellent job and I've already made my next appointment with them. My husband and I came here to get us both hair cuts today. They were surprisingly able to get us in same day ! They ask you arrive 10 mins prior. You do have to find parking since it's on fourth st downtown. When we arrived we were greeted very friendly and our stylists were even up there ready to take us back! My husbands stylist help him find what was best for his hair and advise him on stuff to do to achieve what he desire . Her name was Mary, and she was very friendly . She specializes in men's cuts . His cut took about 30 minutes. My stylist was also very friendly I unfortunately didn't catch her name. The shampooing massage was great . She achieved what I was going for in about an hour. It cost $30 for my husband and $40 for me which is better than most places I've seen. As we checked out they asked if everything went good. The esthetic of the place was adorable. I was a customer of Phia but was looking for a new salon, because I was tired of the constant product sales pressure and high prices at Phia. While I was in Dayton over the holidays, I went to the Square One there, was happy with it, so decided to try them out here in Columbus too. I've been to Quinn a couple of times now. She is very friendly, makes my color look really good, and actually listens to what I ask for! I can't tell you how many times I've had girls at Phia cut my bangs when I specifically told them not to touch them and let them grow out! After three visits to Square One, my bangs have grown out. Surprise! When I told Quinn that I loved having curls in my hair but that they would never stay in no matter how much product was used, she asked if I had ever tried straight iron curls. No other salon had ever recommended this to me. She curled my hair and it lasted for 2 days until I washed them out. Quinn is on maternity leave right now, but if you are looking for a friendly stylist who will listen to what you want, you should go to her! The atmosphere at Square One is very nice. Lots of natural light and you can watch people going by while getting your hair done. I've never had to wait past my appointment time, which says a lot about their ability to schedule. I hate waiting so this is a big plus. Square One is also reasonable when it comes to prices. I have been asked if I want to buy products, but not pressured. I went here to have my girl, Stacy, fix my hair and the only really bad thing I can say about this salon is the parking sucks!!!! It's downtown so that explains it all. It is interesting to be sitting in a chair having your hair done and watch the world go by out of the windows. Aveda products are there and they do try and get you to buy them but a simple yes or no and it's all taken care of. What I enjoyed the most when I visited this salon was the gratis eyebrow arching I received. I wish I could remember who the girl was who did it because not only did she do one helluva good job! The entire experience was so good I nearly dozed off while on the spa table. When can you say you've ever done that while getting your eyebrows done? When I walked in I was greeted by a lovely young lady who promptly took my name, asked me to have a seat and offered me some very tasty (mint?) tea. I had no sooner taken a sip of tea when a different beautiful young lady escorted me to wash my hair. After that I was introduced to Ron who I was told would be giving me a new style. My Sister-in-law and I spent a whole day and a half at Square one recently, receiving the 'The One' spa package. Our day started out with Aveda Tea (which if you don't know, it's the best and you much try it at any Aveda Salon!) and settling into the salon after a tour. We started with our brow wax then lead into a Facial. We had Christine and Stephanie, they were amazing!!! After our facial we had an hour long massage, each tailoring our services to us personally and focusing on our personal needs. Then we had lunch provided by the Spa, which we were told was from a partner restaurant around the corner, and was delicious as well. After lunch Stephanie and Christine came and got us for our pedicures and manicures! We didn't even think to bring bubbles to enjoy during the day but the manager Lauren was so nice to go out and get us a bottle. We enjoyed bubbles through our pedicures, manicures and for the rest of the afternoon while we had our hair cut, conditioned, and styled! We finished up our wonderful day by sipping more tea and having our makeup applied! Then we checked into The Westin to rest for our half day the following day. The second day was equally as great of an experience, starting with brazilians then had a full body exfoliating treatment and hydrating wrap! I would highly recommend Square One to anyone! I've been to Square One a couple times and both occasions were great. I've had Bailey and Tara as stylists. They were able to give me exactly what I wanted and you can trust their advice. Sometimes when you get highlights, especially with dark hair, they end up looking like something out of the nineties with straight blonde streaks against brown hair. Tara was great with color and I appreciated the detailed consultation before the service so she was able to provide the subtle color that I wanted and suggested to color the bottom layers of my hair so it would give me the Carmel hints I was looking for. The cut us shaped well so it lays great. They don't suggest using a razor as the first option which I appreciate. Sometimes I have to argue with the stylist about using a razor on my thick hair. It just doesn't work. I hate a razor cut. Tara agreed. I've been here a couple times and loved the cut and color every time. Definitely making it my go-to salon. Some perks: a cup of hot tea, really lovely flavor, and a free mini facial. read more

Ron Keffer has been cutting my hair for a couple years now, and I could not be happier. He is thorough and has great attention to detail. Plus it is always nice when someone rinses your hair after the haircut, and the hot face towel is a great way to end the appointment. After trying out two others--both quality salons with a lot to offer--I think I finally found what I was looking for. I've passed this salon quite frequently the last few months and decided to stop in yesterday after the gym. Despite my disheveled state, the staff was friendly and helpful, and I made a hair appointment for this afternoon. I had Taci, an advanced level stylist and colorist. I really like friendly and outgoing stylists, so I was pleased that she was talkative and made the hour go by quickly. I was extremely pleased with how well the cut and style turned out, especially given my dislike of products and my usual feeling of looking overdone. The downtown location is very convenient for me, but there's also a location in New Albany for others in Columbus. I definitely suggest that you stop in and check this place out! I highly recommend this place. They have knowledgeable hair dressers and fantastic customer service. When I first moved to Columbus in 2011, knowing I wanted an Aveda salon, I ended up choosing Phia. I was constantly disappointed with the outcome and attitude towards customer service so I finally switched to Square One about a year ago and don't see a reason to look elsewhere. Due to an my erratic schedule (I can rarely schedule hair appointments more than a handful of days in advance) I've gone to several stylists there and am always happy with the outcome. My most recent favorite, Lynn, moved to the New Albany store so I went with Alyssa yesterday and she is great. Great value too given that she is a longtime stylist but new to the store so does not yet have the ranking and price of some others. But what puts Square One over the top is its customer service- hand massages, mini facials, scalp massages, willingness to right anything you are unhappy about. It's hard to explain the difference between a place like this and a place like Phia; both are Aveda salons but have a completely different culture and attitude. Sure, Phia's attitude towards its customer experience might cut it in NYC but this is the Midwest. And Square One's realization of that really informs its customer service and is what makes the difference to keep me coming back. read more

Nice salon but I've been there a couple of times and have never been satisfied with the massages received. Most recently I had Patrick for a massage, nice guy, but that's about it. I've never actually looked at the clock to see how much time was left, because I wanted it to be done already. No music, no dimming of the lights, I could hear all the noise from the rest of the salon. Not sure how he got a license to be a masseur. Definitely needs proper training. Total waste of time and money. Instead of being relaxed I left the place annoyed. Definitely not something I'd like to repeat. Total shame. Perhaps make potential hires give someone from management a massage as part of the interview process, so management can see what services their clients are receiving behind closed doors. read more
